Leonard Walter Ward (9/16/2005)
Services for former longtime Cortez resident Leonard Walter Ward are pending with the Ertel Funeral Home.
Ward was born Nov. 7, 1932, in Cortez, the son of Glen Leroy and Sylvia May (Baysinger) Ward. He died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at his home in Roseburg, Ore.
He was 72 years old.

Richard ‘Bo’ Gilbert Baltzell (9/14/2005)
Richard “Bo” Gilbert Baltzell, 79, died in Bayfield on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005. The cause of death was complications from Parkinson’s disease.
He was born to Harold and Madonna (Haines) Baltzell on June 24, 1926, in Convoy, Ohio.
He was raised in the Fort Wayne, Ind., area and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving until 1946.
Mr. Baltzell married Edith Louise Johnston on July 31, 1948, and in the fall of that year, they moved to El Paso, Texas. There he was employed by the El Paso Fire Department, retiring after 28 years of service with the rank of district chief.
In 1980, the Baltzells moved to Durango. In 1982, Mr. Baltzell was employed by the Colorado Division of Water Resources. He retired in 1991 as the water commissioner for the Florida River. Since then, he and his wife had traveled extensively.
Mr. Baltzell was a member of the Durango Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 507, the American Legion Post No. 28 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031.
He was an avid reader who enjoyed dancing to country and western music and playing golf.
“He was a very straightforward person, honest and down to earth,” said his wife. “He wasn’t into fancy, frilly stuff, but was a good father and a very good husband.” Mr. Baltzell is survived by his wife, Edith Baltzell, of Bayfield and Mission, Texas; son Darrell Baltzell of Albuquerque; daughter Laura Curry of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Lee Baltzell.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. today. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenmount Cemetery.
The Elk’s Lodge No. 507 and the VFW Post No. 4031 will officiate.

Betty Louise Day (9/14/2005)
Betty Louise Day, 74, died at her home in Durango on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005. The cause of death was cancer of the spleen and liver resulting from melanoma.
Mrs. Day was born on Dec. 17, 1930, in Hutchinson, Kan. She was the oldest of six children born to Howard and Minnie Diggs. She grew up there, attending school through the 11th grade.
On Aug. 24, 1956, she married Kenneth L. Day in Hutchinson.
In the summer of 1964, they moved their family to Longmont. While in Longmont, she worked in the sales and credit departments of K-Mart and other retail establishments.
In 1989, the Days moved to Durango to enjoy their retirement years. When they first arrived, Mrs. Day worked at Sew Fine Fabrics.
Her family said her passion was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Day also enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and doll-making. She was a charter member of the Boulder Doll Club.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Day, of Durango; children Alona Waggoner, Wesley Moore and Regina Hernandez, all of Longmont, Sherri Wilburn of Haven, Kans., Brandon Day of Durango and Gail Link of Hillsboro, Ore.; siblings Barbara Schoenhoff and Donald Diggs, both of Hutchinson, Joyce Diggs of Texas, Judy Georgie of Topeka, Kan., and Norman Diggs of Wichita, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery.
The Day family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Day’s name to the charity of one’s choice.
Ethel May (9/11/2005)
(Arnspiger) Ancell A woman who lived in La Plata and Archuleta counties all of her life, Ethel May (Arnspiger) Ancell died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at her home in Ignacio. She was 98.
She was born to Henry and Susie (Lee) Chambers in Ignacio on July 3, 1907, one of nine children.
She told her family stories of walking several miles to the one-room Mason School and of seeing her first car and first airplane. She completed the 10thgrade at Ignacio High School.
She married Ernest Arnspiger in Ignacio in 1924. He was a butcher who became a farmer. After his death, she married Albert Ancell in Phoenix during the 1960s. He also was a farmer.
During her younger years, she was active in various extension clubs and community social clubs.
Her family said her zest for life was contagious, and she enjoyed her family and friends.
Mrs. Ancell had many hobbies, including painting, knitting, crocheting and working in her flower garden. She was the kind of gardener who started all her roses from cuttings.
She was a member of the Allison Community Presbyterian Church. In her later years, Mrs. Ancell was active at the Ignacio SUCAP Senior Center, participating in the exercise program as well as enjoying meals and social activities like bingo.
She is survived by her daughter Frances Lorraine Cline of Tucson, Ariz.; sister Maxine Payne of Deertrail; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ancell was preceded in death by her husbands Ernest Arnspiger and Albert Ancell; and her son Randall Ancell.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Alan TeBrink with the Allison Community Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will take place at Crestview Cemetery in Durango.

Jason A. Ingraham (9/11/2005)
A former Durango resident, Jason A. Ingraham, 36, died on May 12, 2005, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He died from injuries suffered when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle on Cape Cod, Mass.
Mr. Ingraham was born on May 16, 1968, in Wareham, Mass., to Vernon and Marcia Ann Ingraham. He was a graduate of Southeastern Massachusetts University, which is now the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
He had lived in Barnstable for almost three years, after living in Marion, Mass., and Or lando, Fla. For the last 2˝ years, he had worked as a carpenter for Roy E. Simmons in Dennis, Mass.
Mr. Ingraham lived in Durango for several years, working in shipping for Toh-Atin Publishing and also as a carpenter.
Mr. Ingraham was a gifted artist, painter and sculptor. He enjoyed competitive bike riding, as well as kayaking, traveling and hiking.
His family and friends said they appreciated his generosity in helping with their personal construction projects.
Mr. Ingraham is survived by his companion and partner, April Byrd of Cape Cod; parents Vernon L. Ingraham of Wareham, Mass., and Marcia Ann (Byrd) Ingraham Mellor of Yarmouthport, Mass.; brothers Christopher L. Ingraham and David A. Ingraham, both of Cape Cod; and two nephews and a niece.

Paul Atencio Sr. (9/11/2005)
A longtime resident of Durango, Paul Atencio Sr., 55, died at his home in Pagosa Springs on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005. The cause of death was colon cancer.
He was born to Louis and Victoria Atencio in Cortez at midnight on Dec. 24, 1949. His father was a sheepherder, and Mr. Atencio remembered moving the sheep with his father to Dunton in the summers.
After growing up in Cortez, he moved to Durango, where he drove trucks for Durango Construction and other construction companies.
On Dec. 17, 1996, he married Rita Ann Lopiccolo at the state line between Colorado and New Mexico. They were on their way to her hometown of New Orleans, where they honeymooned.
Mr. Atencio loved to hunt and fish.
“He was always joking and laughing,” said his son Paul Atencio Jr. “He was very friendly and loving to his family.” Mr. Atencio is survived by his wife, Rita Ann Atencio of Pagosa Springs; sons from a previous marriage Paul Atencio Jr. of Farmington, Raymond Atencio of Durango and Michael Atencio of Flagstaff, Ariz.; sisters Margie Atencio of Grand Junction, Shirley Casias of Portland, Ore., and Elvina Albo, Cordy Albo and Sarah Albo, all of Durango; seven grandchildren; and numerous family and friends.
A Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, also at Sacred Heart. The Rev. Domic Anaeto will be the celebrant.
Barbara Eleanor Emanuel (9/10/2005)
A resident of Durango for more than two decades, Barbara Eleanor Emanuel died after suffering a brain aneurism on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005. She was 83.
She was born to Charles and Marguerite (Newcomb) Heckinger in Los Angeles on Oct. 29, 1921.
She graduated from Huntington Park High School in the 1930s. During the 1940s, she was a member of the Temple City Women’s Club and maintained lifelong friendships with women she met there.
On Oct. 28, 1953, she married Daniel Emanuel in Las Vegas.
After working at Emanuel Manufacturing in El Hambra, Calif., Mrs. Emanuel stayed at home to raise her children. Once they were on their own, she returned to work, taking a position with Robinsons Department Store in Southern California.
Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel moved to Durango from West Covina, Calif., in 1981. They purchased some land and together developed Chelsy Acres.
She went to work for Community Hospital in the records department, and shifted over to the same department at Mercy Medical Center in 1992, where she worked until the day of her death.
Mrs. Emanuel played bridge, did crossword puzzles and played golf with her husband until his death in 2002. She also enjoyed interior decorating, doing the wallpapering, painting and sewing.
She loved the beach and enjoyed traveling to see her children and extended family. She particularly enjoyed holding special family gatherings at her home in Durango for Christmas and the Fourth of July.
“She was miraculous, funny and beautiful,” said her daughter Kim Emanuel. “She was very focused, set goals for herself each day and accomplished them.” She is survived by her sister Dorothy Hedges of El Toro, Calif.; daughters Linda Jordan of Escondido, Calif., Sandra Houston of Poway, Calif., Kimberly Emanuel of Durango and Corinne McGlawn of Parker; son Roy Emanuel of Nebraska; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Emanuel was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Emanuel.
A celebration of her life will take place Oct. 15 in Durango.

Albert Lee ‘Pete’ Bell (9/10/2005)
A new resident in the area, Albert Lee “Pete” Bell, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center. The cause of death was cancer.
He was born to Oliver and Winnie Bell in Waco, Kan., on June 13, 1924.
During World War II, he worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash.
Mr. Bell was a uranium miner and worked in many of the uranium mines in the Nucla area, including the April Mine and the Sunshine Mine. He also spent some time logging.
Mr. Bell liked to hunt and fish and enjoyed placer mining.
He married Billie Grite in Montrose on Nov. 10, 1948. The couple had 10 children, whom they raised in Nucla. The marriage later was dissolved.
Mr. Bell is survived by his former wife, Billie Grite of Soldotna, Alaska; sons Bill Bell of Kasilof, Alaska, Rocky Bell and Albert Bell, both of Sterling, Alaska, and Earl Bell, Chester Bell, Rodney Bell, Henry Bell and James Bell, all of Aztec; daughters Loretta Barron of Paradox and Tammy Kraxberger of Soldotna, Alaska; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buckeye Lake near Paradox. The Rev. Earl Caudill will officiate.
