Janelle Joy Denny-Weaver (5/16/2006)

Durango native Janelle Joy Denny-Weaver, 35, died at Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, May 11, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.

She was born in Durango to John and Lorraine Denny on Oct. 21, 1970. She grew up in Ignacio and Montana, eventually earning her Graduate Equivalency Degree.

In October 2004, she married Oliver R. Weaver in Ignacio.

Mrs. Denny-Weaver enjoyed various kinds of music, singing karaoke, being with her friends and socializing. Her family said she also loved the Denver Broncos.

Mrs. Denny-Weaver was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanette A. Frost.

She is survived by her husband, Oliver Weaver; sister, Danita Baker; brother Lawrence Cloud; daughter Eleanor Frost; sons Jacob Frost and Quinton Cloud, all of Ignacio; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and other relatives in Montana.

A wake will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at her sister's house, 4161 County Road 322 in Ignacio. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday May 18, 2006, at the Baptist Indian Mission in Ignacio. The Rev. Kelly Winlock will officiate. Burial will follow at the Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.

Sylvia Spaeth Albrecht (5/14/2006)

Sylvia Spaeth Albrecht died Thursday, May 11, 2006, of natural causes at The Valley Inn in Mancos. She was 93.

Mrs. Albrecht was born on April 2, 1913, in Durango to Frank and Lillie Spaeth. She graduated from Durango High School in 1930.

She married Dwight Albrecht in January 1936. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978.

She is survived by her two children, Lynn Albrecht of Kline and Patty Nelligan of Wheat Ridge, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2006, at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Warren Alfred Jacobs (5/13/2006)

Bayfield resident Warren Alfred Jacobs, 54, died at his home on Sunday, May 7, 2006. The cause of death was congestive heart failure as a complication from diabetes.

He moved to La Plata County in 1997. Mr. Jacobs had worked in maintenance, most recently at the Strater Hotel.

He was a professional musician and was involved in the music community of Durango and the surrounding area. Mr. Jacobs and Larry Carver formed a band called Triple Trouble.

"He had recently fulfilled a lifelong dream of producing and recording three albums," said his daughter, Bonnie Thompson.

He was born to Bill and Wanda (Pope) Jacobs in Weatherford, Texas, on Sept. 4, 1951.

He married Leslie Addington in Texas. The marriage later ended in divorce.

His daughter said that he loved music, but more than that he loved Jesus. Mr. Jacobs played music at the Manna Soup Kitchen.

"If he sat down next to someone at a restaurant," his daughter said, "he'd start talking to them about the Lord."

Mr. Jacobs is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Thompson, of Weatherford, Texas; father Bill Jacobs of Springtown, Texas; mother Wanda Jacobs of Weatherford; sister Sherry Dickerson of Weatherford; brothers Will Jacobs of Weatherford and Bill Farmer of Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service for Mr. Jacobs will take place at a later date in Texas.

Hattie Anna Kingsley (5/11/2006)

A graveside memorial service will be held for Hattie A. Kingsley at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Crestview Cemetery near Elmore's Corner at U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 172.

Mrs. Kingsley died in Puyallup, Wash., on Dec. 14, 2005.

Arthur Cuthair (5/11/2006)

The funeral for Arthur Cuthair will take place at 9 a.m. today, May 11, 2006, at the Ute Mountain Ute Recreation Center in Towaoc. Mr. Cuthair died on Friday, May 5, 2006.

John 'Pops' Wisner (5/11/2006)

Durango resident John "Pops" Wisner, 78, died in Durango on Tuesday, May 2, 2006. The cause of death was cancer.

He was born to Rufus and Tressie (Thayer) Wisner in Noble, Ariz., on Aug. 8, 1927.

Mr. Wisner was retired from the U.S. Army. He fought in World War II and the Korean War, where he spent more than a year as a prisoner of war.

He had worked as a truck driver. For the last 20 years, Mr. Wisner could be found at the Sundance Saloon (now the Wild Horse Saloon), cleaning and shining muddy cowboy boots on most weekends.

His friends said he was proud to live in the Four Corners and was well-known in the community for being every child's Santa Claus. They said he was always shaking their hands or giving them a piece of candy.

In his free time, Mr. Wisner enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Texas.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at about 7 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Wild Horse Saloon. Friends are asked to bring their photos and stories to share.

Carolyn Swindle Robinson (5/10/2006)

Durango resident Carolyn Swindle Robinson, 78, died at home on Monday, May 8, 2006. The cause of death was not disclosed.

She was born to Rocquemore and Carrie Swindle in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 12, 1927. On July 3, 1951, she married John Joseph Robinson in Las Cruces, N.M.

Mrs. Robinson was involved in the family business, working as the office manager and bookkeeper.

Mrs. Robinson belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed sewing and reading, and her family said she also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death her husband, John Robinson; and her sons John Robinson III and Michael Robinson.

She is survived by her daughters Carolyn E. Robinson of Durango and Joy Teet of Del Rio, Texas; son John Robinson of Seattle; sister, Frances Vincent, of Corsicana, Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Myron T. Darmour will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital, 2900 Rockpoint Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Ida Kent (5/7/2006)

Ida Kent, an Ignacio resident, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 84.

Mrs. Kent was born to Graves and Ada Kent on Nov. 1, 1921, in a teepee in Breen. As a little girl, she herded sheep with her grandparents in a covered wagon. She also broke horses and did barrel racing. After attending Ignacio schools, she worked as a maid in Durango.

She married her first husband, Herbert Coyote, a range warden for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. They lived in a tent on the reservation, frequently moving.

After Mr. Coyote died, she married Sam Ray. She then went to work as a dorm matron at the Ute Vocational School in Ignacio. During her 30 years there, she helped raise numerous children as well as her own children and grandchildren.

She retired in 1982 when the school's dorms closed. Soon thereafter, she married Joe S. Williams.

Mrs. Kent volunteered at the Southern Ute Recreation Department with their sock hops and enjoyed listening to Sylvian Valdez and his band.

She also liked to can foods, garden, crochet, knit, do bead work and tan deer hides. She enjoyed gambling and playing cards, traveling, driving fast and picking up hitchhikers.

She was a kind and loving woman who made friends easily, her family said.

She was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe's Health Board and the Elder Committee.

She is survived by her son, Elwood Kent of Ignacio, daughter Nieda Ray of Albuquerque, foster daughter Amelia Howe of Ignacio, seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert Coyote, Sam Ray and Joe S. Williams, her brother, Bonny Kent, her sister Isabel Kent and granddaughter Eldina Kent.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006, at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Recitation of the rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio. A wake will follow at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at St. Ignatius. Msgr. Daniel Huber of St. Ignatius will officiate.

Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.

Jeremy James Bodo (5/6/2006)

Durango native Jeremy James Bodo died in Lakewood on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, after a long struggle with cancer that progressed from his soft tissue to his bones and lungs. He was 27.

He was born to Chester and Peggy Bodo in Durango on July 20, 1978.

Mr. Bodo graduated from Farmington High School in 1996. For the past several years he lived in Lakewood, where he met and married Natalie Herman in November 2004. He was working for Abbott Fire Suppression Co. when he became ill.

Mr. Bodo was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, snowboarding, scuba diving and hiking.

His family said, "His faith and love for the Lord gave him courage and strength. His thoughtfulness and graciousness were more than amazing to all his family and many friends."

Mr. Bodo is survived by his wife, Natalie Bodo of Lakewood; father and stepmother, Chester and Lynne Bodo of La Plata, N.M.; mother and stepfather, Peggy Trombley Pepers and Skip Pepers, both of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers Neil Bodo of Lakewood, and Cody Eaklor and Sean Eaklor, both of Mesa, Ariz.; sister Lindsey Bodo of Mesa, Ariz.; maternal grandparents, Bob and Bernice Trombley of Preston, Nev.; paternal grandmother, Helen Williams of Aztec; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Green Mountain Methodist Church, 12755 W. Cedar Drive in Lakewood.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the hospice of your choice.

Edna Frances Ferguson (5/6/2006)

Edna Frances Ferguson, the mother of Bayfield resident Joanne Griffin, died at The Valley Inn in Mancos on Thursday, May 4, 2006, following complications from a stroke. She was 92.

Mrs. Ferguson was born to Robert and Jennie (Rawson) Smith in Palmyra, Iowa, on Sept. 8, 1913. She lived there all her life until she moved to Mancos three years ago.

On July 2, 1931, she married Glen W. Ferguson. He preceded her in death in 1999.

Mrs. Ferguson retired from National Travelers Life Insurance Co. in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a 50-year member of the Carlisle, Iowa, chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was an avid knitter until she contracted multiple sclerosis and she had to give it up. She also enjoyed quilting, and her family said she kept them all in quilts.

Mrs. Ferguson is survived by her children, Donald Ferguson of Ackworth, Iowa, Joanne Griffin of Bayfield and James Ferguson of Danville, Ind.; sister Virginia Horton of Des Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred and burial will take place at a later date in Iowa.
