Ethel Gamble Dyer (2/22/2007)

Former Durango resident Ethel Gamble Dyer died in Woodbridge, Va., on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007. She was 92.

Mrs. Dyer was born to Charles and Jeannette Gamble in El Dorado, Kan., on Dec. 11, 1914. After graduating from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, she taught school for several years.

On June 5, 1940, she married Charles E. Dyer Jr., a native of Durango, in El Paso, Texas.

The Dyers raised their family in Texas before retiring to Durango in 1977. After Mr. Dyer died in 1984, Mrs. Dyer stayed in Durango until her failing health necessitated a move to Virginia, where she lived with her daughter.

Mrs. Dyer was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Durango, the Reading Club of Durango, the Sarah Platt Decker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the FX Chapter of the Sisterhood of P.E.O.

She enjoyed a variety of activities and volunteer work and was an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Dyer is survived by her daughter, Carol Meehan, of Woodbridge, Va.; son, Charles E. Dyer III, of Beaumont, Texas; sister Clara Williams of Colorado Springs; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Hood Mortuary Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Craig-Dyer Scholarship c/o Fort Lewis College Foundation, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301; or the Gamble-Morgan Scholarship c/o Butler County Community College Foundation, 601 S. Haverhill Road, El Dorado, KS 67042.

J. Paul Kellogg (2/21/2007)

Former Durango resident J. Paul Kellogg, 67, died at his home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007. The cause of death was lung failure.

Mr. Kellogg was born to John and Ruth Kellogg in Oklahoma City on May 16, 1939. He completed two years of college.

Mr. Kellogg served in the Air Force Reserve.

His first marriage to Barbara Kellogg ended in divorce.

On May 12, 1985, Mr. Kellogg married Judith Weisenberger in Durango.

Mr. Kellogg lived in Durango for 20 years, where he owned Mayflower Moving and Storage. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 507 and the Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine.

In 1995, the Kelloggs moved to Lake Havasu City. He was responsible for organizing many of the improvements for the London Bridge Shopping Center. His family said that many of the ideas that Mr. Kellogg propounded to improve the town during his run for a City Council seat have been useful to Lake Havasu City.

Mr. Kellogg was a member of the Eagles, Elks, Shriners and Rotary in Lake Havasu City. He was the past president of Republican Men and the London Bridge Association.

Mr. Kellogg enjoyed collecting knickknacks.

He liked to refurbish and fix things up. He especially enjoyed his trucks.

"He was honest, loving, truthful, trustworthy, kind," his family wrote. "And he was a devout Republican."

Mr. Kellogg is survived by his wife, Judith Kellogg, of Lake Havasu City; daughter, Kelli Williamson of Costa Mesa, Calif.; stepdaughter Jennifer A. Glover of Lake Charles, La.; two grandsons; and three stepchildren.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Havasu, P.O. 597, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405; or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105.

Roy Lee Price (2/21/2007)

The Marvel United Methodist Church is holding a memorial service for Roy Lee Price, who died in Spokane, Wash. It will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007.

Robert Lee Stone (2/18/2007)

Durango native Robert Lee Stone Sr. died in Louisville on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007. He was 78.

Mr. Stone was born in Durango to Martin and Lenora Stone on Dec. 29, 1928.

On Feb. 16, 1957, he married Dorothy Marie Svaciana. The couple lived in Broomfield for 47 years.

Mr. Stone worked at Timpte Inc. and was the inventory manager for 27 years.

He was a member of the Broomfield and Boulder Photography Club and the Denver Railroad Club.

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Stone of Broomfield; sons Robert Lee Stone Jr. of San Diego and David Alan Stone of Longmont; sister Dorothy Morain of Durango; and four grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Rundus Funeral Home, 1998 W. 10th Ave., in Broomfield.

Reese Arnett Magill (2/18/2007)

The father of Bayfield School District Superintendent Donald Magill, Reese Arnett Magill died in Silver Spring, Md., on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007. He was 87.

Mr. Magill was born to Newton W. and Cora (Arnett) Magill in Marceline, Ky., on March 6, 1919.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation radioman.

Mr. Magill worked as a machinist and retired to Marble Falls, Texas, where he and his wife lived from 1980 to 2006.

Mr. Magill is survived by his wife, Rose Zacarrado Magill of Silver Spring, Md.; sons Donald Ray Magill of Bayfield and Alan Jon Magill of Kensington, Md.; sister Polly Magill; and four granddaughters.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2007, at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Raymond S. Busch (2/17/2007)

Durango native Raymond S. Busch, 80, died in Santa Fe on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007. The cause of death was complications from cancer.

Mr. Busch was born in Durango to Reginald Seymour and Mildred Limprecht Busch on April 9, 1926.

He graduated from Durango High School in 1943.

During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Navy as a motor mate machinist.

Mr. Busch took home-study courses and went on to work as a professional engineer with the New Mexico Highway Department. He later worked at Lochner Consulting Co.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Busch is survived by his wife, Ellen Busch, of Santa Fe; son Daryl Busch of Rio Rancho, N.M.; daughter Terie Walters of Rio Rancho; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Naval Detail.

Teddy Rae Jefferson (2/17/2007)

Ignacio resident Teddy Rae Jefferson died at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007. He was 42.

Known as Tedd, he was born in Durango on May 4, 1964.

He enjoyed going to the casino to gamble. His family said that, somehow, he would always win some money back. He also liked to cook for family members and bake cakes. Enchiladas were his specialty.

In his younger days, Mr. Jefferson traveled to powwows. He always helped with finishing beadwork and stringing shawls for people who asked him to help. He was also an artist who drew pictures when he had free time.

According to Mr. Jefferson's family, his door was always open for anyone who came to visit, and he never turned anyone away. He leaves behind many "sisters" - his family said everyone became his family.

Mr. Jefferson is survived by his sisters Katherine Hawley of California, Elberta Thompson and Sharon Cloud-Martinez, both of Ignacio, Jennifer Dickson of Idaho and Tileta Jefferson-Cook of Durango; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

According to Mr. Jefferson's wishes, a private family funeral will be held.

Richard D. Walker (2/16/2007)

Former Durango resident Richard D. Walker, 77, died at his Aurora home on Friday, Jan. 29, 2007. The cause of death was coronary-artery disease as a complication of diabetes.

Mr. Walker was born to Ralph and Helen Walker in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 25, 1929.

He spent eight years training as an architect and another four years to get his structural engineering license. In 1950, he married Bonnie Garrett in Denver.

The Walker family moved to Durango in 1968 and lived here until the end of 1982.

Mr. Walker designed the Main Mall after fire gutted the block in 1974, the U.S. Post Office building on E. Eighth Street and many commercial buildings in the Four Corners. He also was the architect for the Gazebo in Rotary Park, a job he did pro bono as a member of the Rotary Club of Durango.

He also was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 507 while here.

In his spare time, Mr. Walker sang as a member of the barbershop quartet the Locomo-tones.

"He was a very loving, caring, honest person," his wife, Bonnie Walker, said. "He did a lot of pro bono work, because that's what he liked to do."

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bonnie Walker, of Aurora; daughters Cynthia Belitz of Aurora and Susan Camp of McCall, Idaho; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service was held.

Theresa Petros (2/16/2007)

The mother of Bayfield resident Karen Dowers, Theresa Petros, died in Aztec on Monday, Jan. 22, 2007. She was 83. The cause of death was complications from a cerebral stroke.

Mrs. Petros was born in Detroit to Alexander and Stella Kosakowski on June 27, 1923. She grew up in Detroit and graduated from high school there.

On Dec. 11, 1941, she married Peter Petros in Detroit. They lived for many years in San Diego, where Mrs. Petros worked at different times as a salesperson at Montgomery Ward and a receptionist at Holy Trinity Catholic School as a receptionist.

Her daughter said Mrs. Petros was a wonderful cook who could make anything. She also enjoyed baking and made delicious pastries. Mrs. Petros also painted in oils and enjoyed acting in community theater in San Diego.

Mrs. Petros was preceded in death by her son Terry Petros in February 2006.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Peter Petros, of Aztec; daughter, Karen Dowers of Bayfield; son Don Petros of Poway, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Joseph's Church in Aztec.
