Floyd James Long Jr.
Floyd James Long Jr., 78, of Cotopaxi, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007. He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Pueblo to Floyd H. Long and Florence B. (Whalen) Long. He was a miner and a veteran of the Army serving in the Korean War.
He is survived by son, Floyd J. Long III of Salida; daughter, Sherry Lynn (Pete) Aguirr of Green River, Wyo.; four grandsons, Paul, Luke, Stephen and Michael; four great-grandchildren, Kaytlin, Luke, Tommy, Ian and Logan; two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, June Johnson.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, April 30, 2007, at the Cotopaxi Cemetery in Cotopaxi.

Raymond E. Smith
Raymond E. Smith of Parker, formerly of Cañon City, died Jan. 14, 2009, in Littleton, CO. He was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Pontiac, Mich., to Joseph and Anna Smith. He attended Michigan State University and University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry. He moved to Colorado in 1953 and opened his dental practice. He practiced in Denver, Steamboat Springs and Cañon City before returning to Denver. As a young man, Raymond served his country in the Pacific theater of WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps. Raymond was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed many hunting and fishing adventures throughout the Western U.S. and Canada. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Smith, and five children: Greg Smith of Helena, MT, Jeff (Pam) Smith of Cañon City, Suzanne Terese Smith of Tujunga, CA, Matthew Smith of Lakewood, CO, and Dawn (Joe) Gaynor of Gaithersburg, VA. He also had five grandchildren: Chris (Tabar), Chelsea (Charlie), Krista, Nick, Ashley and one great-grandchild, Brody. His parents and brother preceded him in death. Private interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery with a public Memorial at a later date.
Mary C. Scavarda
Mary C. Scavarda succumbed at the age of 103 on January 15, 2009, in Cañon City, CO. She was born Mary C. Kinkele in Staples, Minnesota, on May 25, 1905. She moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1917. It was there that she met her future husband, John E. Scavarda, a life-long resident of Colorado. Mr. Scavarda was visiting his sister, Lena Shelton at the time. After a sometime distant courtship they married in Los Angeles August 2, 1932, and traveled to their permanent home in Cañon City. Mr. Scavarda was in business owning the Cañon Mortuary for thirty years before his sudden death in 1953. They were blessed with two sons, John K. and James D. (who died in infancy). Surviving his mother is John K. Scavarda and wife Kathleen M. Scavarda of Los Angeles. Mary C. Scavarda and her husband were active members of St. Michael Catholic Church. Mrs. Scavarda was a Charter Pink Lady volunteer at St. Thomas More Hospital, Elkettes, Daughter of Isabella, Fort Carson Hospital Red Cross volunteer, Kacettes and a member of the Golden Age Center to name the most prominent. In 2002, she was selected to serve as the Cañon City Music and Blossom Festival Grand Marshal. Mary C. Scavarda enjoyed bridge, bingo, and attending numerous club functions and parties. She was the last of five children to survive her family. For the past several years she resided at the Legacy Center in Cañon City until her death. Recitation of the Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM, Thursday, January 22, 2009, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Reverend James King as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements were handled through Holt Family Funeral Home.
Beulah Irene (Randolph) Geisler
Beulah Irene (Randolph) Geisler 79, passed away January 15, 2009, in Rolla, MO.
Beulah was born on January 22, 1929, in Iowa to the late John and Anna Randolph. She was united in marriage with John Floyd Geisler on May 16, 1947. In 1957, they moved with their three children to Colorado. She was an LPN, a member of the Colorado Paleontology Society and a volunteer at the Dinosaur Depot in Cañon City.
Beulah was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Carol, and two brothers Leroy and Larry Randolph.
Beulah is survived by two daughters, Barbara Valent of Manhattan, KS, and Nona Adams of St. James, MO; by three grandchildren, Sarah Zetterlind of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Joseph Adams of Orem, UT, and Rebecca Barnett of St. Charles, MO; and by 6 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Beverly Tonko of Rockvale, CO.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 23, 2009, Union Highland Cemetery in Florence, Colorado.

Clarence Wallace Piltingsrud
Clarence Wallace Piltingsrud died January 19, 2009, in Florence, CO.
Born May 30, 1920, into a Norwegian immigrant family in Leeds, North Dakota, as the youngest of seven children, Clarence was known by a Norwegian nickname, “Pilt”.
Pilt worked on the family farm and in the family store in Leeds, a Norwegian community. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1942 with degrees in chemistry and mathematics, and was a “Fighting Sioux” until the end. After graduation from college, Pilt worked for Dupont in their acid and explosive division.
Pilt served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was assigned to the Manhattan Project, first at Oak Ridge, TN, and then later at Los Alamos, NM. He met his wife of 62 years, Katherine Griffin, at Los Alamos, NM.
Pilt continued his formal education at Los Alamos, by studying neutron physics from Enrico Fermi. Pilt and Katherine were married on February 15, 1947. Pilt began his career as a health physicist at Los Alamos as this was a new field in the nuclear industry. After brief stints at Dugway Proving Ground and Convair in Fort Worth, TX, Pilt began working at the Rocky Flats Plant in Golden, CO, in 1952, and later retired as the Health Physics Manager in 1979.
Pilt was a charter member of the Health Physics Society as well as the Industrial Hygiene Association. Pilt is survived by a brother, Dr. Harold Piltingsrud, Wadena, MN, and a sister Alice Bullard, Santa Cruz, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruth (Gronvold) Piltingsrud, and four older sisters and two grandsons, Erik and Shawn Piltingsrud. Pilt and Katherine had two children, Thomas (Peg) Piltingsrud and Sara Piltingsrud Evers, five grandchildren, Richard (Svetlana) Piltingsrud, Rebecca (Scott Poe) Piltingsrud, Emily (William) Phillips, Christopher Reyes, and Griffin Reyes.
Pilt especially enjoyed his five great grandchildren, and was blessed to live long enough to see them born, Jenkins, Bjorn, Gunnar, Jack and Ingrid.
Arrangements by Holt Family Funeral Home and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colorado Boys Ranch Foundation, 28071 Hwy 109 La Junta, CO 81050.
Marilyn Richardson
Marilyn Richardson, 75, of Cañon City passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 20, 2009.
She was born on March 18, 1933, in Lakefield Ontario, Canada, to the late Norman and Myrtle Curtain.
In 1975, she married Bill Richardson in Ration, New Mexico.
Marilyn is survived by three children: son, Steve (Ranae) Crozier of Girdwood, Alaska, and grandchildren, Shanna, Tyler and Austin Crozier; daughter Karan (Steve) Starika of Cañon City, grandchildren Mathew Starika of Wichita, Kansas, and Jason (Tiffany) Starika of Cañon City, and great grandchildren, Bailey, Zoey, and Kayleb Starika; and daughter Susanne Gould of Ottawa, Canada, grandchildren Amanda Kilger and Natalie Gould; and special and dear friends, DaAnn Dolven and Charlotte Harding.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; sister, Laural Wood; and brother, Jim Carradi. At Marilyn’s request, there will be no services, but a Celebration of Marilyn’s Life will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 802 Sheridan in Cañon City.

Mike L. Reyes
Mike L. Reyes, age 87, of Cañon City, CO, passed away January 19, 2009, in Cañon City, CO. He was born September 28, 1921 in Memphis, TX, to the late Jacinto and Regina Reyes.
He married Margaret Villagrana on November 6, 1943, in Florence, CO.
Mike came to Colorado in 1941, when he was inducted into the United States Army to serve at Fort Carson. After his discharge, he was employed at Portland Cement for 12 years and as a shift foreman at the Cotter Corporation for 21 years.
After retiring, he remained active in construction, which involved building the Federal Prison in Florence and the Pueblo Convention Center in Pueblo. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; one son, Mike Reyes of Phoenix, AZ; two granddaughters, Judith Ann and Cynthia Michelle; four sisters-in-law; Patsy Ortega, Sadie Gross and Esther Martinez all of Cañon City, CO, and Tiva Hernandez of Pueblo, CO; two brothers-in-law, Jack Villagrana of Cañon City, CO, and Pete Villagrana of Phoenix, AZ.
He also was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Memorial Scripture Service will begin at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 24, 2009, at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. James King as Celebrant. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2009, at Lakeside Cemetery with Military Honors.

Tommy Joe Jennings
Tommy Joe Jennings, loving son of Jim and Donna (Mendenhall) Jennings, left this world on Jan. 20, 2009. He is survived by his parents Jim and Donna Jennings of Cañon City; brother Rodney (Mary) Jennings, Texas. Children, Hope (Jim) Griffin, Cañon City; Becky Jennings, Arkansas; David Potter, Canada; Seth Jennings, Colorado Springs; Matt and Mike Liljenquist, Idaho; Sammee Jennings, Cañon City. Of his eight grandchildren, three live in Cañon City, Justin, Ryan and Aaron Griffin; one in Arkansas and four in Idaho. He was preceded in death by one brother Mike Jennings and a sister Donna O”Ruth Jennings. An open house reception celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 1008 Short St., Cañon City, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Sangre de Cristo Hospice West.
Lois ‘Ann’ Dyer
Lois ‘Ann’ Dyer, 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, in Garden City, Kan.
She was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Atwood, Kan., to Merritt “Murphy” Heaton and Myrth A. Doty Heaton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denzel Clyde Dyer; a son, Charles “Chuck” Dyer; two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Michael and Bill Dyer; a sister, Rita Mays; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Memorial is at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 24th, 2009, at Centennial Park in Cañon City, CO. Please bring a dish.
Steven G. Cain
Steven G. Cain passed away on January 31, 2009, in Cañon City, CO. Mr. Cain was born on May 29, 1946, to Shirl and Ernestine (Marrs) Cain in Cañon City, CO.
Mr. Cain is survived by two sons, Shane G. Cain of Cañon City, and James M. Cain of Florence, CO., sisters Shirley Leyer of Glenrock WY., and Charlotte Harper of Cañon City, CO. Mr. Cain had two grandsons, Scott G. Cain and Matthew Cain of Cañon City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna M. Cain, and his parents, Shirl and Ernestine Cain.
There will be a Celebration of Mr. Cain's life at Louie's in Florence at 3:00 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 6, 2009.
Viola Mabel (Thoma) Kendall
Viola Mabel (Thoma) Kendall better known as “Mitzi”, began her journey to see the Lord on February 1, 2009. Mitzi was born on August 13, 1926, and was raised in Ainsworth, Iowa.
Mitzi attended Iowa State University before heading west to California, where she met her sweetheart, Joe. After 65 years in West Covina, CA – keeping Joe’s Advertising Business administration going and raising her children (Thomas, a son died in CA in 1984), Joe and Mitzi came back to Cañon City to retire. Knowing this couple together was to know the true meaning of Love and Youth and Generosity.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Joe Kendall, of Cañon City, to whom she was married for 55 years. She also leaves behind a loving daughter, Karen (Kendall) Clive, Karen’s husband Paul, and her grandchildren, Joseph and Daniel all of Colorado Springs. As well as leaving her family, Mitzi (aka Zeno) was a very special part of the e-bay Antique Chat “Board”. Her dry wit and quick come-backs will be sorely missed, as well as her “thought-provoking” story telling.
Memorial Scripture Service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, February 6th, 2009, at Holt Chapel of the Garden in Cañon City, with Reverend James King as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery.

Earl E. Heltzel long-time resident of Cañon City. Retired from Used Tractor & Implement Sales Business.
survived by his children, Larry Heltzel, Janet Jimeson of Colorado Springs, and Alan Heltzel of Webb City, Missouri, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Earl spent his last four years under the Loving Care of the Bruce McCandless VA Nursing Home of Florence.

Kathleen Gayle Chetelat
Kathleen Gayle Chetelat, 51, passed away on Feb. 4, 2009, in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born on May 31, 1957, in Cañon City, CO to John S. and Barbara (Cheatum) Chetelat. Kathleen is survived by her mother, Barbara of Canon City; one brother, John A. Chetelat of Guilford, CT; four sisters, Linda Creed of Wolf City, Texas, Glenda Spearman of Commerce City, Texas, Michelle Stone of Bells, TX, and Ellen Dick of Azle, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, John, on Oct. 6, 2008. Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2009, at the First United Methodist Fellowship Hall in Cañon City, with Pastor Don Bird officiating. Nicholas D. Capelli
Nicholas D. Capelli passed away Feb. 5, 2009, in his country home at the age of 56. Nick was born June 3, 1952, in Fairplay, CO.
Nick graduated from Cañon City High School and went on to join the Navy and serve on the USS Hancock. After being honorably discharged he went on to lead a colorful life full of adventures with friends and lived the life of a cowboy. Nick loved everything western, along with traveling and family. He was generous to the point of a fault and at the end of his life came to understand God.
Nick was preceded in death by his father Jack Capelli. He leaves behind his mother, Velmarie Capelli, brother David (Diane) Capelli, sister Laurena (Mark) Schmidt, nieces Amy & Andrea, nephews Adam & Matthew, his daughters Nicole (Josh) Fleenor, Holly (Darryl), Emma (CT) McWhorter and grandchildren, close friend Rosalie Evans & many friends.
Nick will be cremated along with his dog Poncho. Services will be held Monday, Feb. 9, with a 21 gun salute at the Charles Anthony Funeral Home in Florence at one o’clock. A Celebration of his life immediately follows at the Four Mile Club in Cañon City.
Lisa Marie Scott
Arrived Aug. 23, 1963, in Memphis, Tenn. Departed Dec. 6, 2008, in Cottonwood, Ariz.
Loved and missed by all who survive: Husband Dale R. Scott. Children Sean Scott, Cottonwood, Ariz., Bodie Scott and Llana Scott, Texas. Two grandchildren.

Charles ‘Chuck’ T. Holcombe
Charles ‘Chuck’ T. Holcombe, 68, was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Rome, Ga., to Thomas and Lenora Holcombe.
He served his country in the Air Force for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He worked in Civil Service for 18 years, retiring in 1999. Mr. Holcombe was currently serving on the town board of trustees in Coal Creek.
He married Lorena Joyce Perdue Enoch in 1986.
He is survived by his wife; mother; sister, Doyce (Wayne) Lynch; brother, David (Bobbye) Holcombe; nieces and nephews, all of Rome, Ga.; daughter, Cheryl (Paul) Freel; and son, Charles (Mary) Holcombe, of Joplin Mo.; stepsons, Bill and Gregory Enoch, of Colorado Springs; five grandchildren; one great-grandson, of Joplin; three step-grandchildren, of Buena Vista; and one step-granddaughter, of Cañon City.
No services are planned at this time due to his wishes. Cremation was through Charles Anthony Funeral Home of Florence.
Robert ‘Bob’ Orton
Robert ‘Bob’ Orton, 74, of Florence passed away Nov. 25 after a brief battle with cancer.
Bob was born in Dudley Lake, Arkansas on July 17, 1936. He spent his 16th birthday serving as a Marine in the Korean War. Bob enjoyed his working years in numerous industries that allowed him to live out his passions for designing new things, tinkering (he never met a machine he couldn’t break down, repair, and put back together again) and traveling throughout the U.S.
His truest passion, however, was for people. He never met a stranger and could make even the shyest child giggle. Bob was a wonderful provider for his family who he loved dearly.
Bob leaves behind his loving wife, Sylvia (Swaggart), whom he married in Cambridge, Wis., 37 years ago; daughter Erica (Eric) Renicker and granddaughter Emily of Florence; daughter Katy (Michael) Armstrong of Colorado Springs; sisters Louise (Tom) Reynolds and Carol Beth Stanfield in Pine Bluff, Ark.; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
An open house to celebrate Bob’s life and share memories will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at 124 W. Second St. in Florence.
Candace Jo Mociak
Candace Jo Mociak, 55, of rural Westcliffe, passed away on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2010. She was born April 1, 1955, in Denver to Arthur and Jo Ann (Murfin) Conroy. She earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. In 1993, she retired as a Major from the United States Air Force, where she specialized in Aircraft Maintenance. Candi is survived by her husband, Charlie Mociak; children, Matthew Kocourek, Jenna Kocourek; mother, Jo Ann Conroy; brother, Kevin Conroy; sister, Christy Yonz; numerous relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father. Memorial services, 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, First Baptist Church of Westcliffe, and 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, Christ Congregational Church, 2500 S. Sheridan Blvd, in Denver. Inurnment, Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Summer 2011. Philip Patrick McKeever
Philip Patrick McKeever, 77, of Cañon City, passed away Nov. 30, 2010. He was born in New York City on June 21, 1933 to Philip John and Rose (Smith) McKeever.
Philip was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War. On Oct. 1, 1955, he married Rose Burke in Iselin, N.J. He worked as an aerospace engineer for Lockheed Martin before his retirement in 1992.
In 2004, Philip and Rose moved from Florida and made Cañon City their home. He was a member of the VFW and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Philip is survived by his wife, Rose McKeever; children, Kevin (Laurie) McKeever, Edward (Jeannie) McKeever, Margaret McKeever-Sadaranda, Maureen McKeever-Gold; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous relatives and many friends.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, St. Thomas More Hospital Chapel, Rev. Tema Nnamezie officiating.
Kathleen Joan Meylink 'Kathy'
Kathleen Joan Meylink 'Kathy', was born Jan. 16, 1943, and went to be with the Lord Nov. 12, 2010. A Celebration of Life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday morning, Dec. 9, at the Vineyard Church of Cañon City, located at 245 S. Raynolds Ave.
Kathy made friends wherever she went with her winning smile and her love of her creator and Savior. Adopted as a small child and raised as an only child, Kathy came to know her siblings as an adult. She was loved by her adoptive family and her birth family and her many friends and is sadly missed.

Fern S. Christie
Fern S. Christie, 87, passed away Dec. 1, 2010, in Cañon City. Fern was born in Bloom on Dec. 22, 1922, to J.B. and Marie (Irigoyen) Ihitcague. She lived in Loveland until 1990, where she worked as a clerk in the County Treasurer’s office and as a Bank Teller at the Greeley National Bank. After moving to Cañon City, Fern volunteered with the area Meals on Wheels program. She attended the Oak Creek Baptist Church in Rockvale. Fern was a founding member of the Southern Colorado Polka Club. Fern is survived by her children, Robert (Janey) Traub of Harlingen, Texas, Joanne (Donnie) James of Cañon City, and Marilyn Teverbaugh of Frasier; and special friend, Billy Mulholland of Cañon City. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Robin (Jarod) Russell, Heidi (Josh) Cluff, and D.J. James; and two great-grandchildren, Talullah Cluff and Marly Traub. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Christie; the father of her children, Richard Traub; one grandson, Patrick Traub; two sisters, and one brother. At her request, no services will be held. Arrangements handled through Funeral & Cremation Care of Colorado.
Anton ‘Tony’ John Kuretich
Born in Pueblo, Oct. 24, 1947, to Aug. 4, 2010. Preceded in death by parents, Anton M. and Louise Kuretich.
survived by wife, Rene; sons, Anton and Christopher; stepson, Ernie Duran; sisters, Mary Ellis, Dorothy (Don) Pisarczyk and Betty (Mike) Rhodes; and many other family members.
Tony was conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad and a Vietnam veteran. An amazing man that could fix anything to perfection.
We will miss him dearly and hope you will join us in celebrating his life, 1:30 p.m. Aug. 12, 2010, at Drinkwine Family Mortuary, 999 W. Littleton Blvd., Littleton CO 80120.
