Frances Lindsay
May 20, 1915 ~ October 5, 2013
Frances Lindsay, age 98, passed away peacefully in Austin Texas on October 5th 2013.
Prior to her marriage to Ben W. Lindsay in 1982, Frances was married to Dr. George P. Francis, who pre-deceased her in 1975.
Frances and Ben spent over 20 years in the summer months in Ouray. Ben passed away in May 2005.
Frances had six children by her first husband of which two survive, Tom and Phyllis. Her other “adopted” children are Larry Lindsay and his wife Rebecca and Becky Lindsay Kent and her husband Kelvin.
A Memorial service was held at the Tarrytown Methodist Church in Austin on October 13th.

James A. Svaldi, Sr.
September 4, 1924 - September 25, 2013
James Anthony "Jim" Svaldi, Sr., 89, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at the Denver Health Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Red Lodge, MT to Josephine (Bartoletti) and John Svaldi, Sr. When he was 3 years old, the family moved to Ouray, Colo., where he was raised, graduating from Ouray High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy for 36 months during World War II.
After being honorably discharged, he came to "Butte and graduated from Butte Business College. While attending Butte Business College, he met Nancy A. Griffiths and they were married July 13, 1947. He then worked for W.P. Fuller for over 40 years, retiring in 1988.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Nancy, on June 8 of this year, as well as his parents, and a brother, Martin.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Bill Mattioli, Butte; sons and spouses, Jim Svaldi, Jr. and his wife Toni, Anaconda, and John Svaldi and his wife Debbie, Butte; granddaughters, Stacie Sanders and her husband Nate, Missoula, and Jamie Svaldi, Missoula; brother, John Svaldi and his wife Doris, Montrose, Colo.; and brother-in-law, Jack Griffiths, Spokane.
Private family services are planned with entombment in Mountain View Cemetery.
Memorials are requested to the Butte Emergency Food Bank or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Frederick W. “Rick” Hanson
October 14, 1960 – October 20, 2013
Passion: A powerful force that cannot be stopped
Frederick W. “Rick” Hanson, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at his home after many decades of a complex medical history. The family has been residents of Ridgway since 1976.
Frederick Ward was born in Denver, Colorado on October 14, 1960 to parents, Howard Harry and Constance Anne (Carter) Hanson. Rick was a loving, patient child and was a sweet, gentle soul.
Rick enjoyed taking drives in the mountains, watching television programs, reading and word find. Rick and his mother, Connie had purpose driven lives. In Rick’s early life he was active in sports such as baseball and basketball. He performed in horseshows and rodeos, enjoyed waterskiing, swimming and was a member of the Boy Scouts. Rick loved music including John Denver and Willie Nelson.
Survivors include his mother, Connie Hanson of the family home in Ridgway, Colorado; father, Howard Hanson of Georgia; sister, Margi Beecher and husband, Pat of Ridgway, Colorado; uncle, George “Bubba” Carter of Olathe, Colorado and nephews, Brandon Mobley and Sean Miller of Ridgway, Colorado. Rick was loved and adored by his family.
Rick was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents along with aunts, Mary Sue Carter Swanson and Caroline Carter.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Rick Hanson will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Ridgway Community Church at 1:00 P.M.
Dennis Duane Moyer
November 26, 1941 ~ September 4, 2013
Dennis Duane Moyer passed away at home with family on September 4, 2013 following a battle with cancer. He was born on November 26, 1941 in Rochester, MN, the son of Roscoe and Clara Moyer.
Dennis’s youth was spent working on the family farm in Lake City, MN. After graduation from Lake City High School he attended the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Architecture. He enlisted in the Army Reserves in Minneapolis, MN and upon his move to WI he transferred to the 397th Engineer Brigade in Wausau, WI. On June 17, 1967 Dennis married Joan Kyes at the Fairview Methodist Church in Central City, NE. They made their home in Wausau, WI for the next 31 years where they raised their two sons, Scott and Brook.
Dennis got his start in Construction Management with Adolfson & Peterson in Wausau and thereafter, he continued as a general contractor managing projects that included schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings for firms including Boldt, Wergin, and Miron all of Wausau. In 1998 the couple moved to Nevada where he continued his project management career with Martin Harris. The couple moved to Ridgway, CO nestled in the San Juan Mountains in 2001. He continued working part-time for the City of Ouray as a Building Inspector retiring in December, 2012. The building of the United Church of the San Juans in Ridgway, CO was one of his most fulfilling projects.
As an avid outdoorsman, Dennis volunteered many hours of time and energy with the Ouray Trail Group and The Friends of Ridgway State Park. He was well known in the community as the “Bluebird Man” having constructed a Bluebird Trail of 60 Bluebird houses extending from Ridgway State Park to the Ponderosa Village. He had a great love for hiking, reading, gardening, and football.
Surviving family members include his wife, Joan: his sons, Scott Moyer (Michelle) of Benicia, CA and Brook Moyer (Angie) of Montrose, CO. His loving grandchildren are Jackson and Elena (Elle) Moyer of Benicia, CA and Jesse Moyer of Montrose, CO. He is survived by his brothers, Darrell Moyer (Kathy) of Mica, WA; Dallas Moyer (Gina) of Las Vegas, NV; Donald Moyer (Karen) of Goodhue, MN, and his sister, Donna Balow (Mike) of Brighton, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe & Clara Moyer and his sister, Diane Bremer of Lake City, MN.
A vigil for the immediate family is being held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose, CO. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery of Ouray, CO. A Church and Community Memorial Service will be set at a later date. Condolences may also be sent to the family at www.crippinfuneralhome.com.

Louis Art Spomer
April 17, 1940 – July 25, 2013
Art Spomer passed away July 25, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital, he was 73. He was a retired Professor Emeritus of Horticulture and Plant Sciences in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Art was hired at the UI on Oct. 15, 1971 and retired June 30 2005, approximately 34 years’ experience in agricultural research and teaching and 24 years on the academic faculty at the University of Illinois. He authored more than 80 refereed journal papers and book chapters plus over 150 semi-technical publications. More than 60 published abstracts of presentations to professional societies in addition to numerous invited presentations to various professional and trade societies in the U.S. and Canada. He was elected to the campus Incomplete List of Instructors Rated Excellent by his students on 16 occasions.
Art was born on April 17, 1940 in Denver, Colorado from the union of Peter John and Thelma Pauline (Johnson) Spomer. He spent his childhood in Englewood, Colorado and graduated from Englewood High School in 1958. He attended college at the Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO, receiving his Masters and Undergraduate Degrees and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, receiving his Doctorate Degree. He was a Captain in the United States Army and was stationed at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah serving in the Chemical Corps, and was a former resident of Urbana, IL and Ouray, CO.
On August 29, 1962 Art married Wilma Elsie (Billie) Price in Montrose, CO, she preceded him in death January 1998 in Urbana.
Art enjoyed visiting with friends and family, and spending time at his cabin in Ouray, Colorado. His hobbies included photography, sculpture, carving, bronze casting, hiking and visiting new places. He also had an interest in Colorado history and volunteered for the Ouray Historical Society. Art loved nature, family members remember him saying the outdoors was his sanctuary and he was rarely seen without his camera and a smile.
Art leaves behind three sons; Paul Spomer of Sanford, NC, Ryan Spomer of Tolono, IL and Mark Spomer of Champaign, IL, two brothers; George Guy Spomer of Pullman, WA, William Roy Spomer of Atascadero, CA and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wife Billie and a brother; Peter John Spomer II.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Yankee Boy Conservation Association, PO Box 1448, Ouray, CO 81427 or Ouray Historical Society, P. O. Box 151, Ouray, CO in Art’s name.
A memorial service will held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Walker Grove at Meadowbrook Park, Windsor Road and Race Street, Urbana, IL 61802 (be prepared for inclement weather). A memorial service was held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Lake Lenore, Ouray, CO.
Gary Hansen
March 16, 1947 – July 5, 2013
John Gary Hansen (Gary), 66, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2013, at his home in Ouray, CO after a heroic thirteen-month battle with cancer.
Gary was born in Los Angeles, CA and grew up in the surrounding area, spending much of his time on the beach. He attended Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA, and took classes in Electronic Technology at Long Beach City College.
After high school Gary was proud to work as a spacecraft electrical and instrumentation installer for North American Aviation/Rockwell, and as an electronic engineering technician for TRW Aerospace. From 1973 to 2002, he had a career working for the Astronomy Department of the University of Texas, starting at the McDonald Observatory in west Texas before moving to Austin, TX.
In Austin Gary met his future wife, Christine, and the two were married in 1992. When he retired in 2002, the couple and their two young daughters moved to Ouray, CO. The family had spent many summers camping in the Amphitheater, and finally made the move permanent.
Gary loved the close-knit community and spectacular scenery of Ouray. The mountains were his back yard, and he spent many days exploring them with his friends and family. He was an active member of the Ouray Trail Group, and a more recent member of the Ouray Elks Lodge. He also lent his electronic expertise as a regular volunteer at the Second Chance Thrift Shop in Ridgway.
In 2009 Gary joined the Ouray City Council, and was an active member until his death. For almost four years he spent his time researching and discussing council matters so that he could best represent the community he loved.
Gary was a man of many talents and interests. In his life, he assembled command modules for the Apollo program and sent strands of his own hair into space. He participated in a Guinness World Record-breaking skydive formation and logged over 24 hours of freefall. He served as the President of Ring 60, the Austin chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Locally, he participated in the single-jack competition for the first time at the Highgraders’ Holidays in 2011, and again in 2012.
Gary could tell the longest and most interesting stories. He was a creative problem solver and a jack-of-all-trades. He was a collector of the strange and unusual. He was passionate about everything he did, and he knew what was important in life. He was a loving and beloved son, husband, father, friend, and neighbor.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, John William “Bill” Hansen, and his sister, Christine Hoffman. He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Burgess, his wife, Christine Hansen, and his two daughters, Carli and Bonnie Hansen.
A memorial service for Gary will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the Ouray Community Center, for those who wish to share their memories of him and celebrate his life. A light lunch will be provided.

Raymond Lee Glaze
Raymond Lee Glaze, 61, of Potter, Neb., died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 in Denver of natural causes.
Visitation and viewing will be from 12-8 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, at Tennant Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 14, at the Sterling Church of God, on N. 7th Ave., with the Rev. Hazel Quist officiating. Burial will be at the Elizabeth Cemetery.
Mr. Glaze was born on July 23, 1939 to Eldon and Nona (Benton) Glaze in Burlington. He attended several different schools, but graduated from Newcastle High School in Wyoming. He then attended college in Lamar.
He was an over-the-road truck driver for 40 years.
Mr. Glaze is survived by a son, Russell Glaze and wife Christin of Borger, Texas; a daughter, Kimberly Lincoln and husband Scott of Indio, Calif.; his mother and step-father, Nona and Dale Morgan of Atwood; a step-daughter, Colleen Brownell and husband Bob of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters, Janette King and husband Larry of Worland, Wyo., and Mary Williams and husband Dennis of Atwood; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eldon Glaze; an infant son, Mark; a granddaughter, Chelsea; and a step-son, George.

Imogene F. Hinders
Imogene F. Hinders, 81, of Sterling, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in Sterling.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at First Presbyterian Church with services concluding at the church. Rev. Steven Schorr is officiating.
Mrs. Hinders was born July 3, 1920, to Jess and Phoebe (Titus) Hill in Titonka, Iowa.
On Aug. 28, 1944 she married Milton Hinders in Algona, Iowa.
Her passion was secretarial work. She worked at several insurance agencies from high school until moving to Fowler in 1971. In Fowler, she and her husband owned and operated MC
Automotive. They moved back to Algona in 1979.
Patricia Mae Lissolo
Patricia Mae Lissolo, 58, of Crook, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Greeley.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at Crook Community Church with services concluding at the church. Rev. David Tyree will be the officiant. Burial will be at Gordon Cemetery in Gordon, Neb.
Mrs. Lissolo was born May 12, 1943, to Robert and Capitola (Grimes) Kelley in Imperial, Neb. Her family moved to Fort Morgan where she attended school, graduating from Fort Morgan High School in 1960.
On Sept. 2, 1962, she married Lester Lissolo in Fort Morgan. They made their home in Weldona.
Robert Eugene O'Connell
Robert Eugene O'Connell, a banker who brought innovation and expanded financial resources to Northeastern Colorado, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2001, of natural causes at his home West of Sterling. He was 81.
Born in Sterling on Jan. 7, 1920, to John Henry and Nelle (Chance) O'Connell. Mr. O'Connell lived here his entire life and was proud of the growth and development of the local region. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating in June 1941, and then served in the U.S. Army as a captain in the 75th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany during World War II.
Bob and Charlotte Towne O'Connell were married at her parent's home in Sterling in 1946.
Wilfrid Burenheide
Wilfrid Burenheide, 86, of Sterling, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Sterling of natural causes. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, April 5, with vigil and rosary service to follow at 7 p.m., at Tennant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Mickey Flaska officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Wilfrid was born Feb.. 12, 1916, to Henry John Burenheide and Elizabeth (Weinman) Burenheide in Olpe, Kan. He went to school in Maydale, Kan.
Florence E. Simmons
Florence E. Simmons, 83, of Westminster, formerly of Sterling, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at Life Care Center in Westminster. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush. Burial will be at Brush Memorial Cemetery.
Virginia Miller
Virginia Miller, 86, of Sterling, died Monday, May 6, 2002, in Sterling of natural causes. Private family services will take place on Friday in Denver. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park.
Virginia was born April 16, 1916, to Arthur and Dorothy (Oswald) Rudkin in Sparta, Wis. She attended school and graduated from Cuba City High School in Cuba City, Wis. She then attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Francisco Alva, 76, of Fort Morgan, and formerly of Sterling, died May 6, 2002, in Fort Morgan. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 8 at Tennant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. May 9 at the Spanish Assembly of God Church in Sterling with Rev. Anita Leyva officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Alva was born Jan. 8, 1926, to Jacinto and Paulina (Galvan) Alva in Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico.
Robert Wayne Crossland
Robert Wayne Crossland, 87, of Sterling, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the Sterling Regional MedCenter. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Mike Paulison officiating. Burial will be at Haxtun Cemetery.
Robert, third son of Edgar Wilkerson and Elisabeth Anne (Guernsey) Crossland, was born at Haxtun.

Twilla Dick, 83, of Sterling, died June 27, 2002, in Brush. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 1, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. July 2, at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Orville Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mrs. Dick was born July 14, 1918, in Crook to George and Anna (Vath) McCracken. She grew up in Crook, graduating from Crook High School.
