WONDER, Rose Marie

Oct. 2, 1919 - Dec. 10, 2001

Rose Marie Wonder of Phoenix, formerly of Longmont, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in Phoenix. She was 82.

She was born Oct. 2, 1919, to German immigrants George and Eva Schwab in Henderson, Colo. She grew up primarily in the Denver area.

In 1954, she married Robert Wonder in Littleton. They moved to Longmont in 1966. They built the house she designed on Gaynor Lake and resided there until 1989, when she moved to Arizona.

Mrs. Wonder owned and operated two dress shops, Jill's in Littleton and Lola's in Phoenix. Always a trendsetter, her styles were ahead of the times, and her desire to be different yet classy showed in everything she did.

Throughout her life, she was an avid seamstress, artist and gardener. She learned to make and design draperies and slipcovers for the wealthy of Denver during World War II. Her homes were incredible showplaces of her talent.

She traveled to the Holy Land and Africa five years ago on a missionary trip, where she lived with and fell in love with the African people.

Mrs. Wonder also was a member of the United Way.

She is survived by two daughters, Joy Englehorn and her husband Con of Phoenix and Jill Wonder of Longmont; three grandchildren, Matt Englehorn and his wife Sherri of Phoenix, Katy Englehorn of Phoenix and Ryan Stadler of Denver; two brothers, Alex Greenwalt and Dave Schick; a sister, Molly Knopp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Faith Community Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dan Hasen officiating.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley in care of Rose Wonder, 15 10 E. Flower, Phoenix 85014.

BAYER, Jewel Mae (Gunst)

May 10, 1926 - June 6, 2002

Jewel Mae (Gunst) Bayer of Arvada died Thursday, June 6, 2002. She was 76.

She was born May 10, 1926, to Oscar and Charlotte Gunst in Longmont. She grew up east of Longmont and attended Mead-area schools.

In 1962, she married Bob Bayer. They lived in the Denver and Arvada areas.

Mrs. Bayer had great interest in and admiration for police work, which was her husband's career.

She was a member of the police widows' association.

She loved flowers and her home, in which she lived until her death. She loved children and enjoyed spending time with her nieces, nephews and neighbor children.

Mrs. Bayer was preceded in death by her husband; two half-brothers, Henry and Albert Gunst; and a half-sister, Vera Sloan.

She is survived by a son, Mike Bayer and his wife Sandy; two granddaughters, Jessica of Corona, Calif., and Mandy of Downey, Calif.; a brother, Bob Gunst and his wife Julie of Englewood; a sister, Florence Kiteley and her husband Ernie of Longmont; four nieces, Leanne Kane, Karen Kiteley, Diane Kulm and Shirley Muierhead; three nephews, Gordon Gunst, Mervin and Larry Sloan; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her good friend and neighbor, Ester Tangway.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, June 7, at Olinger Mortuary, 29th and Wadsworth, Denver.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Olinger Mortuary.

Interment will be Monday, June 10, at Fort Logan Cemetery.

BUDKO, John S.

Nov. 4, 1934 - May 31, 2002

John S. Budko of Lafayette died at home on Friday, May 31, 2002. He was 67.

Born Nov. 4, 1934, in Cleveland, he was the son of John S. Budko and Mary Masley Budko. Both parents preceded him in death.

He graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland with an electrical engineering degree in 1956.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot, actively for six years and as a reservist for three years. John was employed as a pilot for United Airlines for 28 years, retiring as a captain in 1994.

John was a runner, completing 10 marathons and one Ironman Triathlon. He enjoyed hiking, biking, tennis and skiing. Other hobbies included woodcarving, barbershop singing and traveling with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, of 44 years, of Lafayette; three daughters, Laura Budko of Boulder, Jennifer Sullivan and her husband Bill of Longmont and Amy Miller and her husband Paul of Erie; four grandchildren, Amber, Sara and Elijah Sullivan of Longmont and Natalya Miller of Erie; a sister Arlene Neale of Cleveland; three nephews and two nieces and their families.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boulder. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, at 3 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Hess presiding.

Contributions may be made to Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice, 1455 Dixon Ave., Lafayette 80026.

Darrell Howe Mortuary is handling cremation arrangements.

Private service to take place at Green Mountain Cemetery at a later date.

CARDENAS, Eliacar L. 'Lee'

Jan. 25, 1910 - June 6, 2002

Eliacar L. "Lee" Cardenas of Commerce City died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Rose Terrace Care Center in Commerce City. He was 92.

He was born Jan. 25, 1910, to Alfonso and Edurijan (Lave) Cardenas in Gulnare, Colo.

He married Mickey Valdez in Longmont.

Mr. Cardenas served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He retired from the Washington Mine east of Erie in 1975. He was also the owner and operator of Cardenas Disposal Co. of Boulder.

Mr. Cardenas lived in Boulder from 1942 to 1993 and in Louisville from 1993 to 1995.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and United Mine Workers Local No. 5909.

Mr. Cardenas was preceded in death by his wife in 1998, three sisters, two brothers, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Aragon of Louisville and Rose Bureau of Commerce City; two brothers, Alfonso Cardenas and Virgil Cardenas of Denver; and four sisters, Laura Vigil, Vada Cordova, Maxine Vellogas and Cora Fresquez, all of Denver.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 2312 14th St., Boulder.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Leonard celebrant. Services will conclude at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.

A reception will be held at the church following the burial.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 739 Sherman St., Denver, 80203.

COLARD, Betty J.

Aug. 28, 1927 - May 31, 2002

Betty J. Colard of Longmont died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Life Care Center. She was 74.

She was born Aug. 28, 1927, to George and Mildred (Goghanour) Johnson in Brayton, Iowa. She moved to Colorado and grew up in Denver.

In May 1947, she married Don Colard in Denver.

Mrs. Colard worked for many companies in the area and retired from ValleyLab in 1993.

She lived in Lyons before moving to Longmont in 1998.

Mrs. Colard was a member of the Philadelphia Church of God.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, fishing and was a Denver Broncos and Colorado Avalanche fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Sonny; and a sister, Irene.

Mrs. Colard is survived by two daughters, Linda Billings and Deborah Schneider, both of Longmont; three grandchildren, Lonnie Billings and his wife Wendy of Longmont, Brenda Hernandez and her husband Carlos of Boulder and Scott Schneider of Longmont; six great-grandchildren; and six brothers, Quitin of Firestone, Robert and his wife Loretta of Denver, Lloyd and his wife Pat of Dacono, Ronald and George of Denver and Lyle of Commerce City.

Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Highlands Mortuary, 10201 N. Grant St., Thornton.

Memorial services will be be held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 5, at Highlands Mortuary.

CUMMINGS, Jo Ann

Feb. 25, 1924 - May 30, 2002

Jo Ann Cummings of Longmont died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Peaks Care Center in Longmont. She was 78.

She was born Feb. 25, 1924, to Bluford and Ida (Locke) Harrison in Stanford, Texas.

In June 1952, she married Jack Cummings in San Antonio.

Mrs. Cummings was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by a daughter, Jody Glende of Longmont; two grandsons, Tim Gilbert of Texas and Eric Gilbert of New York; a granddaughter, Gretchen Boynton of Longmont; and three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Richard and Anna Jackson.

Private memorial services and interment will be held.

Erlinger Cremation Service in Longmont is handling arrangements.

DAMERON, Carolyn E.

Sept. 2, 1919 - May 20, 2002

Carolyn E. Dameron of Niwot died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Boulder Manor Heath Care Center in Boulder. She was 82.

She was born Sept. 2, 1919, to Frank Lester and Edna (Brown) Jones in Rocky Ford. She graduated from East High School in Denver and the University of Colorado at Boulder in June 1941.

On Oct. 17, 1942, she married William M. Dameron.

Mrs. Dameron moved to the area in 1974 from Berea, Ohio.

She was a secretary at the University of Colorado at Boulder in both the English department and the law school.

While living in Berea, she was a secretary at Berea High School.

Mrs. Dameron was a member of the First Congregational Church of Boulder and an avid tennis player. She attended monthly East High School Alumni brunches and was a member of the CU-Buffalo Belles.

She was a devoted and loving mother and enjoyed lifelong friendships everywhere she lived.

Mrs. Dameron was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 23, 1983; a brother, Robert Jones; and a daughter, Kathleen Dameron.

She is survived by three sons, William Dameron Jr. of Boulder, Thomas Dameron of Cleveland, Ga., and John Dameron of Atlanta; two daughters, Denise Cone of Niwot and Laurie Dameron of Boulder; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the First Congregational Church, 1128 Pine St., Boulder, with the Rev. David Randall-Bodman of the church officiating.

Services will conclude at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Employment Link, 6290 Lookout Road, Boulder, 80301.

DAVIES, Leonard

Jan. 9, 1910 - June 6, 2002

Leonard Davies of Longmont died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Peaks Care Center. He was 92.

He was born Jan. 9, 1910, to James and Clara (Harrop) Davies in Longmont. He never married.

Mr. Davies started farming as a young man with his father and brother on the property that is now Vance Brand Airport. The family farmed there for 33 years before moving to a farm north of Hygiene.

After retiring, he moved to Lyons, where he lived many years.

Mr. Davies attended Old Stone Congregational Church in Lyons. He was a longtime member of the Oddfellows Lodge No. 29.

Mr. Davies was preceded in death by eight brothers, Walter, Jack, Albert, Willard, Ira, Alva, Charles and Oscar Davies; and a sister, Gladys Sawdey.

He is survived by a sister, Edith Bickel of Longmont; a brother, Neil Davies and his wife Ruth of Lovell, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

No visitation is planned.

Private graveside services will be announced at a later date. Cremation has been held at Howe Mortuary and Crematory in Longmont.
