V. James Eastep
July 5, 1927 - Nov. 7, 2003
A retired dentist who practiced in Longmont for 40 years died in Fremont, Calif., on Nov. 7, 2003, after a seven-year struggle with Alzheimers disease and an eight-month battle with intestinal cancer.
Born to Victor C. Eastep and Violet D. Shipton in Livingston, Mont., he had a sister, Betty Boe, who along with his parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by son Dr. James C. Eastep of Silver Spring, Md.; daughter Tamara A. Rogers of Fremont, Calif.; son John S. Eastep of Denver; and grandson Zachary James Rogers of Fremont. Also surviving him are daughter-in-law Mrs. Cathy Dougherty-Eastep of Silver Spring; and son-in-law Dr. Stuart E. Rogers of Fremont.
After graduating from Park County High, Livingston, Jim entered the U.S. Navy just as World War II was ending. His tour of duty included stops in Japan, China, Guam and Okinawa. As a college student in Montana, he married Ann Shellenberg on June 13, 1948, who mothered his children and survives him.
Jim graduated from Montana State College in Bozeman, Mont., and the University of Nebraska, School of Dentistry in 1954.
He bought a dental practice in downtown Longmont in 1955 and later expanded into an office in northeastern Longmont where he once hunted pheasant. It was in this clinic he practiced for 40 years and served several generations of families. He was affectionately known as the Painless Dentist. Jim served on the Longmont Community Hospital Board and was a long standing member of First Lutheran Church and a member of the Lions and Elks clubs.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed leisure time fishing, hunting and riding his motorcycle in the mountains of Colorado. He prided himself on doing his own dental lab work and made jewelry as a hobby which he continued into his later years. He was an active advocate of the process of fluoridating Longmonts water supply an important public health measure to prevent cavities.
Jim is fondly remembered for his high quality dentistry, as a bit of a character, a great dancer, a good father and a sociable member of the community.
He brought his positive attitude and charm into his very last days.
His ashes will be interred at Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston sometime next year.

FOWLER, Karen Lynn
April 15, 1967 - Dec. 1, 2003
Karen Lynn Fowler of Dacono died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at her home following a sudden illness. She was 36.
Mrs. Fowler was born April 15, 1967, in Los Angeles to Frank Vickery and Patricia Ann (Regan) Kroeger. She grew up in San Clemente, Calif., and studied electrical engineering at the University of Arizona.
She married Ralph W. Fowler Sr. on June 17, 1994, in Tucson, Ariz. The couple made their home in Tucson until moving to Dacono in May 2001.
Mrs. Fowler enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with friends and family. She was a football fan, loved flowers and animals and adored her children.
She is survived by her husband of Dacono; her parents of Lincoln, Calif.; two daughters, Chanteal and Brianna Fowler of Dacono; a stepson, Ralph W. Fowler II of Shannon, Ohio; and two brothers, Steve Kroeger of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Dave Kroeger of Sacramento, Calif.
In lieu of funeral services, a visitation and family greeting time will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 4, at Howe Mortuary, Longmont.
Cremation will follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to the local humane society or animal rescue organization.
HALL, Vernon L. 'Vern'
Aug. 31, 1937 - Dec. 2, 2003
Vernon L. 'Vern' Hall of Mulvane, Kan., formerly of Longmont, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003. He was 66.
Mr. Hall was born Aug. 31, 1937, in Hibbings, Minn., to Levi and Helen (Johnson) Hall.
He attended and graduated from Hibbings High School in Hibbings and from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn.
Mr. Hall had a career in banking and was the business owner of KB Buyers Group an office supply sales company at the time of his death.
He lived in Longmont from 1971 to 1992; in Winfield, Kan., from 1992 to 1999; and in Mulvane from 1999 until the time of his death.
Mr. Hall was a member of the Elks Club in Winfield, the American Legion in Mulvane and the Marauders Car Club in Mulvane.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hall of Mulvane; two sons, Jeff Hall Sr. and his wife Waynetta of Wichita, Kan., and David Hall of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Rickie Smith and her husband Tim of Derby, Kan.; three sisters, Shirley Bjellos of Nashwauk, Minn., Dorothy Hall of Kansas City, Mo., and Judy Wilmot of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Hall and Jeff Hall Jr., both of Longmont.
Cremation has been handled by Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services of Wichita.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
HARPER-RESLER, Goldie M.
March 10, 1904 - Nov. 30, 2003
Goldie M. Harper-Resler, formerly of Longmont, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Columbine Manor in Salida. She was 99.
Mrs. Harper-Resler was born March 10, 1904, in Lewiston, Ill., to Calvin and Myrtle (Goddard) Maranville.
On April 17, 1921, she married Lewis Harper in Max, Neb.
She and her husband moved to Colorado in 1936. They started Harpers Potato Chips in Longmont in 1939 and owned and operated the business until retiring in 1953.
Mrs. Harper-Resler also helped start the Midwest Childrens Home, now known as Rocky Mountain Childrens Home.
She belonged to the Professional Business Women of Longmont and the TOP Club. She was a charter member of New Song Church and served on several committees for senior citizens on the state level.
Mrs. Harper-Resler enjoyed going to Arizona, traveling and fishing. She will be remembered as someone who was generous to all.
She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1972; her second husband, Leslie Resler; three brothers; two sisters; and a grandson, Donald Jensen.
Mrs. Harper-Resler is survived by a son, Kenneth Harper and his wife Alberta of New Braunsfels, Texas; a daughter, Betty Jensen and her husband Dan of Caņon City; a sister, Darlene Alred and her husband Charles of Phoenix; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Van Dyke of New Song Church officiating.
Interment will be in Foothills Gardens of Memory.

HOCKETT, Marcia Virginia
May 24, 1925 - Dec. 1, 2003
Marcia Virginia Hockett of Boulder died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003. She was 78.
Mrs. Hockett was born May 24, 1925, in Jamestown to Howard E. Sr. and Elsie Margaret (Marx) Vickery.
She moved to Boulder in 1930.
Mrs. Hockett attended the University of Colorado Nursing School and was later self-educated in many subjects including history and politics.
In 1950 she married Wesley Harland Hockett in Boulder.
Mrs. Hockett was a fashion runway model for the Morgani Agency in Denver. She was then a homemaker for many years.
She was a published author of more than 15 historical romance novels. She also contributed the historical research for many of her daughter Katherines books. She was the recipient of the Romance Writers of America Mother of the Year award in 1988 in Phoenix.
Mrs. Hockett was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She will be remembered as a loving and supportive woman who was most proud of being a good mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a brother.
Mrs. Hockett is survived by a daughter, Kathy Lynn Kramer of Boulder; a son, Richard Allen Hockett of Longmont; a grandson, Aric Wesley Hockett of Longmont; twin brothers James D. Vickery of Golden and John D. Vickery of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4655 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder with Bishop Allen Newell officiating.

MCCOY, Marie
Jan. 28, 1910 - Nov. 19, 2003
Marie McCoy of Sauk Centre, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home. She was 93.
Mrs. McCoy was born Jan. 28, 1910, in Marshall, Minn., to Martin and Elizabeth (Hanlon) Sullivan.
She graduated from Marshall High School in 1928.
In 1932 she married Ronald I. McCoy in Marshall. They lived in Marshall and intermittently in Woonsocket, S.D. They moved from Marshall to Woonsocket in 1944 with their family of seven children when Mr. McCoy was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II.
In 1966, Mrs. McCoy and her husband moved from Woonsocket to Sauk Centre where they were in business with their sons in the publication of the Dairyland Peach. They lived there the remainder of their lives.
Mrs. McCoy was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Mothers.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; a son, Kirk Patrick McCoy in 1980; 12 brothers and a sisters, and a great-grandson, Jacob Vearrier on May 14, 2001.
Mrs. McCoy is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Vearrier and her husband Marvin of Sauk Centre; five sons, Thomas McCoy and his wife Mary of Longmont, James McCoy and his wife Marlene, Dennis McCoy and his wife Dorothy and Joseph McCoy and his wife Audrey, all of Long Prairie, Minn., and Brian McCoy and his wife Shirley of Sauk Centre; a daughter-in-law, Regina McCoy of Browerville, Minn.; 41 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with the Rev. Arthur Hoppe officiating.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.
Arrangements were handled by Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose, Minn.
MENDOZA-RETA, Melissa
Nov. 3, 2003 - Nov. 29, 2003
Melissa Mendoza-Reta of Longmont died Nov. 29, 2003. She was 3 weeks old.
She was born Nov. 3, 2003, in Longmont to Arnoldo Mendoza and Norma Reta.
Melissa is survived by her parents of Longmont; three grandparents, Jose Reta and Maria Campos of Longmont and San Juana Gamboa of Mexico; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Vigil services were held Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Howe Mortuary Chapel.
Graveside services will be held today, Monday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
MILLER, Mary T.
May 25, 1911 - Dec. 2, 2003
Mary Theresa Miller of Longmont died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at a local care center. She was 92.
Mrs. Miller was born May 25, 1911, in Denver to Andrew and Crenza (Raneburger) Gander.
She was raised by foster parents James and Mary Mauracher on a farm on Lookout Road. She attended Gooding Elementary School and rode a horse to school some days. She attended Catholic High School in Boulder and graduated from Barnes Commercial School in Denver in 1933.
On Aug. 12, 1938, she married Andrew Miller in Lafayette. They built a little house in Erie where they lived for many years.
A homemaker, Mrs. Miller was also an accomplished seamstress who made most of her own clothes. She will be remembered by her friends for her beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables.
She was of the Catholic faith and a lifetime resident of the Longmont area.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 26, 1980.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her close friend Marjorie Smith and her husband Edward of Lafayette; and nieces and nephews and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 4, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Brian Morrow of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church officiating.
Interment will be in Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery on South Boulder Road, Boulder.

MITCHELL, Gregory A.
June 16, 1949 - Nov. 26, 2003
Gregory A. Mitchell of Erie, formerly of Boulder, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties Care Center in Louisville, the result of brain cancer. He was 54.
Mr. Mitchell was born June 16, 1949, in Minneapolis to Rodney W. Sr. and GiGi (Dubay) Mitchell.
He attended Mankato State College in Mankato, Minn.
In 1979 he married Becky Crowe in Boulder. They divorced in 1981. He then married Melani Bertetto in 1987 in Boulder. They later divorced in 1997.
Mr. Mitchell was a self-employed building contractor and the former owner of Crazy Horse on the Hill in Boulder in the 1970s.
He was a former Erie Town Board member. He will be remembered by many people in the greater Metro area for his jubilant and off-beat sense of humor.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his father; and an aunt, Leigh Dubay.
He is survived by his mother of Broomfield; a son, Taylor Abel Mitchell of Fort Collins; two brothers, Kim M. Mitchell of Longmont and Rodney W. Mitchell of Louisville; a sister, Gina L. Linde of Fort Collins; his companion, Pamela Joyce Jones of Erie; and a stepdaughter, Janessa Bertetto of Fort Collins.
Cremation has been handled by Avalon Funeral Home of Lafayette.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Second Baptist Church, 5300 Baseline Road, Boulder, with the Rev. Hansford Van officiating.
