William "Bill" Beard

Memorial services for William Leonard "Bill" Beard of Cortez will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Larry Chappell of the Lighthouse Baptist Church will be officiating.

Bill was born to Leonard Samuel and Gladys (Pettid) Beard on April 5, 1917, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000. He was 83.

Bill's father moved from Iowa in order to farm when Bill was young. After being discharged from the military, Bill returned to Colorado and moved to Cortez. He loved this area and its recreation of hunting and fishing. He liked to mine and staked a few small gold-panning claims. Bill was a master electrician and helped to set up and wire all of the electrical work at the Rico Argentine Mine.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Edith LaVerne Beard of Pueblo, Colo. Also surviving are his children, David William Beard and his wife, Irene of Craig, Colo., Jerome Richard Beard of Clifton, Colo., and Barbara Costello and her husband, James of Cedar Point, Utah. His grandchildren, Robert Shannon Martin, Lynn Shelton Martin, Lex Beard, David Beard, Robert Beard; two step-grandchildren, Victor Costello, and Walter Costello also survive.

Preceding William in death was his grandson, William Shane Martin; a brother Robert Beard; and both of his parents.

Patty R. Maynes

Patty R. Maynes, 75, a retired legal secretary for the U.S. Labor Department, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000 at her home in Fort Worth, Texas. Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20, at the Cortez Cemetery in Cortez, beginning at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Maynes was born Oct. 12, 1925 in Abilene, Texas. She graduated from Abilene High School and attended the University of Texas. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth. Mrs. Maynes was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Maynes in 1983. She is survived by one son, Douglas B. Adams of Iowa City, Iowa.

Memorial contributions can be made to the National Spina Bifida Association.

Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Donald Wells

Funeral services for Donald Dean Wells will be Saturday, Oct. 21, in Tulsa, Okla.

Donald was born in Lockney, Texas, on Feb. 8, 1917, to Omar and Ruby Wells. He married Bertha LaVon Randol May 14, 1936, in Cortez. He departed this life on Oct. 16, 2000, at his home in Tulsa.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; daughters: Imogene and James Daves of Cahone, and Bernadean and Jack Sweet of Tulsa, Okla; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Billy Eldon Froman

Billy Eldon Froman, 70, of Crowley County, Colo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Griffy Family Funeral Home (719-263-4221).

He is survived by his wife, four children and their spouses; four step children; 19 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister.

Louise Higgins

Funeral services for Louise Margeritte Higgins, a longtime resident of Lewis, will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Conway Wood will be officiating. Interment service will follow at the Lewis Cemetery. Visitation is set for Friday afternoon between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Louise was born to Marion Arthur Miller and Minerva Elizabeth (Williams) Miller on Aug. 21, 1910 in Wheeler County, Texas. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000 at the age of 90.

Louise was a dedicated homemaker to her family and enjoyed gardening, canning, and quilting. Louise loved to play basketball in high school. She was wed to Allen Denton "Dent" Higgins on July 26, 1928 in Cheyenne, Okla. Dent and Louise were married for 70 years. Her loving husband preceded her in death last year.

A large loving family is left behind, including her seven sons, Millard Higgins of Dolores, Colo., Revis Higgins of Casa Grande, Ariz., D. Royce Higgins of Cortez, Colo., Ervil Higgins of Lewis, Colo., Don Higgins of Bloomfield, N.M., Myrle Higgins of Peoria, Ariz., Billy Higgins of Cortez, Colo.; and by her daughter, Arvita Higgins of Albuquerque, N.M. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 6 great great-grandchildren. Her brother, Marion A. Miller of Lubbock, Tex., and her sister, Geneva Brown of San Jose, Calif. also survive her.

Mary Blackhorse

Funeral services for Mary Blackhorse, 78, of Montezuma Creek, Utah, will be held Friday, Oct. 13, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Mrs. Blackhorse passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000. She was born July 1, 1922.

Lou Ann Evelyn Nicholson

Funeral services for Lou Ann Evelyn Nicholson will be on Monday, Oct. 16, at the Cortez First United Methodist Church beginning at 10 a.m. Reverend Lynn Evans will be officiating. Interment service will be on Tuesday, Oct. 17,at the Kim Cemetery in Kim, Colo. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 14, between 5 and 7 p.m.

Evelyn was born to Jesse Oran and Sarah Eleanor (Goodwin) Doolen on Aug. 23, 1905 in Paducah, Tex. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000. She was 95 years old.

Evelyn and her husband, Ace Nicholson, owned a filling station in Cortez where Evelyn did all of the bookkeeping for their business. She also worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Patterson Office Supplies in Cortez. She was active with the Ute Mountain Study Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, and a member of the United Methodist Church. She truly enjoyed her Sunday drives with a special group of ladies who she would take out to lunch each Sunday. She was very involved in her family, attending all family activities. She loved to play the violin and piano.

Her husband, Ace Nicholson, preceded her in death. She is survived by one brother, Lorin Doolen of Port Aransas, Tex. and one brother has also preceded her in death. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, Larry Doolen of Aurora, Colo., Chuck Doolen of El Paso, Tex., David Doolen of New Castle, Colo., Sarah Bormuth of Billingham, Wash., Dona Wittwer of Mancos, Janie Dixon of Texas, and LaMoine Sammons of Texas.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Evelyn Nicholson with the Cortez First United Methodist Church.

Robert Hemp Root

Funeral services for Robert Hemp Root, a lifelong resident of Towaoc, will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery.

Robert was born into the Tom and Effie (Hemp) Root family on Sept. 2, 1935, in Towaoc. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the age of 65.

Robert was a laborer for the Ute Mountain Tribe. He had many loves, some of which included playing bingo and hand game and participating in Sun Dances.

Both of Robert's parents have preceded him in death. He leaves behind his brothers, Steve Root, Alfred Wall, and Wilbert Root, all of Towaoc; and his sisters, Virginia Root of Towaoc, Genevieve Root Thompson of Ignacio, and Pearl Root Laner of Towaoc. Also surviving is one close aunt, Jessie Root House of Towaoc, and many nephews and nieces.

Sherry Lynn McBride Kibel

Funeral services for Sherry Lynn McBride Kibel, a Cortez resident, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m.

Pastors Jonathan Bland and David Merritt will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Sherry was born to Guy Frank McBride and Mary Lou (Lokey) McBride on July 10, 1950 in Tyler, Texas. She died at her home in Cortez on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the age of 50.

David Lee

David Lee, a former Cortez resident, passed away on Oct. 7, 2000, in the Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Texas. He was 64.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Cortez Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by VFW Post 4031 of Cortez. Visitation is set for Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, from 4 to 9 p.m.

Helen Norma Amidon

Memorial services for Helen Norma Amidon, who died Oct. 6, 2000, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Durango Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Brothers Billingsley and Mitchell will be officiating. Interment service will be held at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, Calif. following memorial services on Oct. 21, at 54440 Troost Ave. in North Hollywood. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. and will be conducted by a local elder.

James R. Taylor

Memorial services for James R. Taylor will be held at the home of John Bishop, 30651 Highway 184, Monday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m.

Lee Trujillo

A memorial Mass will be held for Lee Trujillo on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the St. Jude Catholic Church in Dove Creek beginning at 11:15 a.m. Rosary and Mass services will be held in Abiquiu, N.M., with the interment to be at the Abiquiu Community Cemetery.

Lee Trujillo was born on Oct. 14, 1912, to Jose Zacarias Trujillo and Vicentita (Madrid) Trujillo in Abiquiu, N.M. He passed away at his home in Dove Creek on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000. Lee was 87.

Lee worked for many years as a sheepherder. He is dearly missed by his companion of 23 years, Virginia Ortega. He is also survived by his children: Jose Trujillo, Jr., of Greeley, Colo., and Alfonso Trujillo, Dorida Vinson, Fred Trujillo and Larry Trujillo, all of Colorado. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. His sister, Rosaura Trujillo Martinez of Espanola, N.M., survives him.

He was preceded in death by his wife and both of his parents.

McKean Peabody

Private family memorial services for McKean Peabody will be held at the Towaoc Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. Services will be officiated by Jerald Peabody and Terry Knight.

McKean was born on June 30,1929, to Isaac and Patty (Suma) Peabody in Towaoc, Colo. He passed away in June of this year. He was 70.

McKean was a retired cattleman with the Ute Indian Tribe. He was married to Loretta (Thompson) Peabody, who preceded him in death. His parents also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Jerald and Kathryn Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., Melvin and Janis Peabody of Ignacio, Colo., Ike Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., Tyrone Peabody of Baltimore, Md., LueWanna Peabody of Grand Junction, Colo., and Michelle Peabody of Denver, Colo. He is survived also by 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

His brother, Joe Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., survives as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Harry Bruce Waugh

A wake service for Harry Waugh will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Mr. Waugh’s residence, 305 E. Montezuma in Mancos. Harry Bruce Waugh, a resident of Mancos, passed away Sept. 29, 2000 at his residence. He was 63.

Mr. Waugh was born Aug. 2, 1937, in Denver.

He married Bonnie Lee Smith on May 23, 1959 in Denver. Prior to his marriage, he had served in the U.S. Navy for four years, stationed at Beeville, Texas.

Mr. Waugh enjoyed working for his uncle, who founded the PET City stores in Denver. He and his family had previously lived in Montrose, Colo., and in Missiouri.

He also enjoyed stockcar and barrel racing with his wife Bonnie; animals, hunting in his early years, helping people spiritually to know God, and helping any way he could. He loved nature, and enjoyed his privacy too.

Mr. Waugh was an intelligent man with a great sense of humor. He was open minded, a great teacher, and an outstanding human being.

Harry Bruce Waugh is survived by a son, Guy Waugh of Alaska; daughters, Linda "Pumpkin" Luce of Mancos; Debora Waugh of Burlington, Vermont; Denice Waugh; and granddaughters, Amanda Lee and Jessica.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Bonnie on Feb. 6, 1995 in Dolores; two infant sons, Kenny and Eddie; grandfather Harry Munger and paternal grandmother.

Van N. "Nate" Kitchens III

Military services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 12:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Cortez for Dolores resident Van N. "Nate" Kitchens III. Memorial services will be in Orange, Texas. Nate died on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born in Orange, Texas, on Jan. 18, 1964, the son of Van N. Kitchens Jr. and Elaine McCray Kitchens.

Nate was a member of 12th Street Missionary Baptist Church in Orange. He was a Persian Gulf veteran and an active member of the 928th National Guard.

Survivors include his father, Van N. Kitchens Jr., of Birchtree, Mo.; his mother, Elaine Thompson of Jefferson, Texas; a son, Van N. Kitchens IV of Bourbon, Mo.; his sister, Kim Ware of Bolivar, Mo.; and his grandmother, LaVerne McCray of Orange, Texas.
