HYOVALTI, Esther E.

Jan. 4, 1908 - July 13, 2004

Esther E. Hyovalti of Boulder died of natural causes Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Boulder. She was 96.

She was born Jan. 4, 1908, in Wilsonville, Neb., to Olof and Cora (Mead) Johnson. She married Charles M. Hyovalti on June 4, 1935, in Chicago.

She graduated from high school at age 16 and started teaching six months later. Mrs. Hyovalti was a teacher for seven years in Nebraska and Minnesota, and later worked for Johnsons Publishing.

She moved to Boulder in 1941. She enjoyed bridge, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boulder and American Baptist Women.

Mrs. Hyovalti was preceded in death by her husband and eight brothers.

She is survived by a son, Duane C. Hyovalti of Boulder, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Crist Mortuary Chapel, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at the mortuary. The Rev. Nancy Darnell of First Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Ave., Boulder.

She asked that memorial contributions be made to the donors favorite charity.

KINSETH, JoAnn W.

Sept. 30, 1937 - July 17, 2004

JoAnn W. Kinseth of Longmont died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Longmont United Hospital of natural causes. She was 66.

Mrs. Kinseth was born Sept. 30, 1937, in Humboldt, Iowa, to Harold and Pearl (Lehman) Haviland.

She married Burt Kinseth on Jan. 11, 1957, in Iowa. She was a retired laborer for Winnebago R.V. Manufacturing.

Mrs. Kinseth was a great lover of flowers and plants. She enjoyed British comedies on television and putting quilts together. She never could put down a good book. She followed the Lutheran faith.

She was a very special woman who had endless talents. She was a wonderful grandmother, devoted mother and wife.

Mrs. Kinseth was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Gary Kinseth.

She is survived by her husband of Longmont; three sons, Arvin Kinseth and his wife Donna of Lincoln, Neb., Dean J. Kinseth and his wife Kathy of Joice, Iowa, and Dale A. Kinseth of Syracuse, Utah; three daughters, Rhonda Jean Elbert and her husband Paul of Marne, Iowa, Ramona L. Kinseth of Joice and Barbara Kinseth of Joice; a brother, James Haviland and his wife Caroline of Waverly, Iowa; a sister, Patricia Davidson and her husband Gary of Clear Lake, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

No visitation is scheduled.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, July 20, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel, 503 Terry St., and will conclude at the chapel. Cremation will be handled by the chapel.

LAY, Carl M.

Nov. 16, 1919 - July 9, 2004

Carl M. Lay of Olathe, Kan., died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Royal Terrace in Olathe. He was 84.

He was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Meadville, Mo. to Thomas and Nina Lay.

He lived in Longmont from 1928 to 1941. He attended Longmont schools and graduated from Longmont High School in 1937. While he was a student at Longmont High School, he was on the basketball team.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He moved to the Kansas City area in November 1945.

He retired from Trans World Airlines on Jan. 1, 1982, after 36 years.

He was a member of Olathe Masonic Lodge No. 19, Scottish Rite Bodies, Ararat Shrine, Ararat Legion of Honor, American Legion Post No. 153 in Olathe and the TWA Seniors Club.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Lloyd Lay; three sisters, Dorothy Lay, Gladys Diester and Virgie Toner.

Mr. Lay is survived by his wife Dorothy E. Lay, of Olathe; six children, Sandra Knight of Washington, Iowa, John Lay and his wife Mary of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jackie Lay, John Buchanan and his wife JoAnne of Colorado, Ina Guebert and her husband Jeff of Manhattan, Kan., Susan Sigler and her husband Jeff of Lawrence, Kan.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arnold Lay of Longmont.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at D.W. Newcomers Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan. Inurnment followed services at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation was one hour prior to services at the chapel. Cremation was held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Ararat Shrine, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129. D.W. Newcomers Sons Johnson County Chapel of Overland Park handled arrangements.

LEWIS, Lauerne Frank

Aug. 6, 1935 - July 13, 2004

Lauerne Frank Lewis died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Frederick of complications from emphysema. He was 68.

Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 6, 1935, in Vallejo, Calif., to Frank and Esther (Babcock) Lewis.

He married his wife, Margaret, on May 11, 1967, in St. Paul, Minn.

He worked for the Associated Press for 18 years and NeoData for seven years. He lived in Frederick for 30 years.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and loved to fish and ride his motorcycle.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife; a sister, Beverly Lewis of California; a son, Kenneth Lewis of Broomfield; a daughter Patricia Mercer; three granddaughters, Cori and Lexis Mercer and Kennedy Rose Lewis; and a grandson Adan Lewis.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1721 Redcloud Road in Longmont. Brad Carlson will officiate.

Contributions my be made to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Lafayette 80026.

LONG, Minnie

Oct. 16, 1904 - July 15, 2004

Minnie J. Long died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the Applewood Living Center in Longmont. She was 99.

She was born Oct. 16, 1904, in Kampville, Ill., to Charley and Lizzie Patrick. She married Ira M. Long on April 8, 1929, in Louisiana, Mo., and the couple moved to Boulder later that year. She moved to Longmont in 2001.

Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by a son, Linn Long and his wife Darlene of Longmont; a brother, Gilbert Patrick; a sister, Linda Rowena Hunter; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, at the Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.

Memorials are suggested to Applewood Living Center in Longmont. Arrangements entrusted to Howe Mortuary in Longmont.

MARTINEZ, Maria Mercedes Mercy

Nov. 28, 1930 - July 17, 2004

Maria Mercedes Mercy Martinez of Longmont died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Boulder Community Hospital. She was 73.

She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Longmont to Benjamin and Adela (Cortez) Vigil.

Mrs. Martinez was a lifelong resident of Longmont.

She married Gabriel Martinez on Oct. 13, 1953, in Boulder.

Mrs. Martinez worked for Ball Brothers and later for Hewlett Packard until her retirement in 1982.

She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion Unit 32 and the G.I. Forum. She served on the Longmont Urban Renewal Board in the 1970s, participated in voter registration and was a Boulder County Election Judge. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Mrs. Martinez enjoyed being with her family and was an avid sports fan. She will be remembered as a woman who remained active her entire life, possessed a great sense of humor and was determined to live life on her own terms.

Mrs. Martinez was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel Martinez on Dec. 13, 1998; a daughter, Evelyn Martinez; two brothers, Eddie and Maurice Vigil; and a grandchild, Timo Sandoval.

She is survived by two sons, Gary and Greg Martinez, both of Longmont; three daughters, Patsy Cordova and her husband Mike Hopkins, Chris Duran and her husband Mike and Angel Lynn Martinez, all of Longmont; two brothers, Ray Vigil and his wife Sally and Pat Vigil; two sisters, Cie Aragon and Julie Rendon and her husband Frank; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Mickey Flaska of the church as celebrant. Cremation was held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maria Martinez Fund sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont 80501.

MILLER, Claudius H.

Aug. 31, 1932 - July 18, 2004

Claudius H. Miller of Palos Park, Ill., died Sunday, July 18, 2004. He was 71.

Mr. Miller was born Aug. 31, 1932, to Mari Fall and Claudius Miller Sr., Oak Park, Ill. He graduated from High School in 1950. He attended Albion College in Albion, Mich., before entering the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant. He served as a Marine until 1955.

Mr. Miller married Jane Mortorff on June 23, 1956, in Ashley, Ind.

He was president of the family business, Millers Prepared Potato Company, in Blue Island, Ill. until 1988. He then worked in sales at Torvac in Blue Island.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by a brother, Jon R. Miller.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Connie Brodt and her husband Marc of Longmont and Cathy Erickson and her husband Mark; two sons, Mike Miller of Palos Park and Russell Miller and his wife Penee of Elwood, Ill.; a grandson, Denton Erickson; a brother, Richard A. Miller of Tinley Park Ill.; a sister, Rosemary Bonner and her husband LeRoy of Palos Heights, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Miller of Mokena, Ill.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 13350 LaGrange Road, Orland Park, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Center, 12700 Southwest Highway, Palos Park, Ill., or to All Saints Lutheran Church.

MURRAY, Wendell P.

July 10, 1926 - July 14, 2004

Wendell P. Murray of Longmont died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Applewood Living Center in Longmont. He was 78.

He was born July 10, 1926, in Milton, Mass., to Edmund M. and Amy (Lane) Murray.

He attended Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., until joining the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a World War II flyer in the Pacific Theater.

Upon his return, he finished his education at Babson College. On June 7, 1952, he married Caroly Rydell in Wellesley.

Mr. Murray worked as a branch manager and vice president of Wellesley National Bank, which later became South Shore National Bank. After his banking career, he owned and operated Franklin Tool Rental in Franklin, Mass.

Mr. Murray served as vice president of the Babson Flying Club and was treasurer of the Wellesley Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for SCORE, a small-business advisory organization.

He came to Longmont in 1990 from Dover, Mass. In Longmont, he was the treasurer for the Fox Hill Homeowners Association.

Mr. Murray was interested in flying, boats and cars. He loved traveling and animals. He was a consumer advocate.

He is survived by his wife of Longmont; a son, Wendell P. Murray III and his wife Barbara of Edwards, Colo.; a daughter, Sarah Varderwaall of Loveland; a sister, Jean Anderson of Orlando, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services for Mr. Murray will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Max Bailey of the church officiating. Cremation was held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Longmont Humane Society in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont 80501.

PLANK, Keith

March 11, 1935 - July 16, 2004

Keith Lee Plank of Boulder died Friday, July 16, 2004, in Boulder. He was 69.

Mr. Plank was born March 11, 1935, to Gail M. and Verna V. (Tribbett) Plank in Doddsville, Ill.

He lived his entire life in Boulder and Lafayette. He liked to play cards, feed birds and fix old radios.

Mr. Plank was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his daughters, Courtney Burdess of Casper, Wyo., and Lindsey Fogg of Emmitt, Idaho; his son, Troy Plank of Englewood, Calif.; his mother, Verna Plank of Longmont; his brothers, Lyle Plank of Boulder and Bill Plank of Torrington, Wyo.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Foothills Garden of Memory, 2051 Terry St., Longmont, where internment will follow.
