ELLING, Virginia Porter

March 25, 1916 - Jan. 7, 2005

Virginia Porter Elling, formerly of Longmont, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. She was 88.

Mrs. Elling was born in Penn Yan, N.Y., on March 25, 1916.

She will be remembered for her great sense of fun and adventure, her natural elegance and style, her informed and lively discussions on world events and for her courage and unfailing humor as she fought ovarian cancer. She had a love for family, friends, nature and music.

She is survived by her husband, Milfred O. Elling; three daughters, Kay Dahl-Hansen, Helena Elling and Laura Garrett; two sons, Fred Elling and Eric Elling; a sister, Pauline Stuart; and six grandchildren, Rolf, Kim, Ursa, Sam, Max and Emmett.

No memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders or UNICEF.

HASELBUSH, Edna

Nov. 5, 1916 - Jan. 4, 2005

Edna M. Haselbush, a longtime farm resident of Longmont and activist in the Hygiene United Methodist Church and Home and Garden Club, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005. She was 88.

Edna was born Nov. 5, 1916, to William Heebner and Elma Ora Brewer Heebner in Henderson, Colo. She was raised in Adams County and graduated from Adams City High School in 1934.

On Nov. 5, 1936, Edna married Robert L. Haselbush in Brighton. They shortly thereafter began a life together, owning and operating the Holland Dairy in Lakewood, which they ran for approximately 15 years. She worked diligently to nurture her four children through the formative years, providing a secure, organized and caring environment. She also strived to instill self-reliance and good citizenship in her children.

In 1956, the family moved to a dairy farm just west of Longmont where Edna became active in church and community work. She was a member of the Eastern Star Columbine Chapter No. 11 and Hygiene Home and Garden Club, where she shared her talents and interests in all varieties of flowers and home gardening. She maintained a small greenhouse and prepared flower arrangements for many special church and community events. She also continued this interest by working at the Robbins Flower Shop in Longmont.

Mrs. Haselbush recognized the vast need for community service and devoted many hours to the senior citizen care centers where she led Bible study and organized visitations. Through the Hygiene Methodist Church, she also provided support to many needy families, finding time to serve as the president of the United Methodist Women and many other church offices. She was also a proud member of the Territorial Daughters, an organization for Pioneer Families of Colorado.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Julia Herskind and Elizabeth Harvey.

Surviving are three sons, William Haselbush and his wife Mavis of Hygiene, Paul K. Haselbush and his wife Martha of Fredericksburg, Va., and Jack Haselbush and his wife Shirley of Fort Collins; a daughter, Sharon Foos and her husband Jack of Mesquite, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Trudy Coats, Todd Haselbush and Tonya Haselbush, all of Colorado, Pamela Morrison, Kevin Haselbush of Virginia, Lisa Lineweaver of Florida, Trina Tubb, Daniel Foos and Rebecca Hudson, all of Texas, Craig Haselbush of Massachusetts and Jana Brandl of Nebraska; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Howe Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Burry Bessee of Hygiene United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory.

HOLMES, Carol

Sept. 30, 1928 - Jan. 4, 2005

Carol Marie (Darland) Holmes of Longmont died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at her residence. She was 76.

Carol was born Sept. 30, 1928, to Leo and Florence (Earcrett) Darland in Hastings, Iowa. She was raised in the Sidney, Iowa, area and graduated from Sidney High School in 1946.

Following graduation, she went to work in the general office for Browns Shoe Fit Co., where she met her husband, L. Paul Holmes.

The couple married on Sept. 18, 1949, and celebrated 52 years together prior to his death in 2002. The family moved to Longmont shortly after their wedding in 1949.

For more than 40 years, Mrs. Holmes could often be found helping out at her husbands business, Browns Shoe Fit Co., on Main Street in Longmont. Mr. Holmes was the stores manager for 42 years.

For 55 years, Mrs. Holmes was a dedicated member of First Lutheran Church, and she volunteered her time and talents to many activities. She was renowned as a talented crafter, creating intricate counted cross-stitch and embroidery projects, and a wonderful cook.

Only two weeks ago, her talents were on display when her children and grandchildren all gathered in Longmont to celebrate Christmas. She filled the table with traditional Swedish food and filled the stockings she had painstakingly created for each family member.

In addition to her crafting, Mrs. Holmes enjoyed reading and playing bridge, and she was an exceedingly loyal Denver Broncos fan. She will be missed by a wide circle of friends, whose companionship she treasured.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul.

Surviving are a son, Michael Holmes and his wife Cheryl of Concordia, Kan.; two daughters, Diane Wagner and her husband Steve of Pleasanton, Calif., and Pamela Boyd and her husband John of Eagle; six grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, Stephanie, Christina, Emily and Eric; and four sisters, Mildred Miller of Shenandoah, Iowa, Ruth Chandler of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Helen Richards of Sidney and Phyllis Ketcham of Shenandoah.

Visitation hours will be today, Friday, Jan. 7, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Howe Mortuary, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. The casket will remain closed at services.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at First Lutheran Church, 803 Third Ave., with Pastor Steve Berke officiating. Interment will follow at the Ryssby Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church in care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont 80501.

LYMAN, Joan M.

LYMAN, Joan M., 94, a resident of Longmont, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at the HospiceCare Center of Boulder & Broomfield Counties in Louisville. Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of M. P. Murphy & Associates Funeral Directors.

MILLER, Paul Eugene

Oct. 13, 1965 - Jan. 6, 2005

Most people when writing an obituary about a loved one, list names, dates and places written to resemble a list of errands. But our beloved Paul was so much a part of our lives, our love and our souls, we feel we need to show his life with words. Words like strong, compassionate, loving, kind, spiritual, easy, brave and let's not forget his good ol objectivity.

His wife, Kelly Miller, his two children, Alyssa Renee and Tabor Ethan Paul, love him to the limits of time. His mother, Donna Milholland and his father, Gene Miller, bless the day he was born and love him will all their hearts. His brother, Kevin Miller and wife Brenda Miller felt love and joy, as well as friendship in his presence. His mother-in-law, Sandy Alles, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kimber and Jack Kreutzer and brother-in-law, Kevin Alles, felt Saint Paul was the kindest and loving of men. Nieces and nephews, Sheridan and Max Stevens, Hayden Miller, Tyler Alles and Samantha loved Uncle Paul and thought he was so cool, shy, but cool. Aeri Miller, his sister, was a loving presence in his heart.

And finally, to all those many wonderful people who knew Paul throughout his life, Thank you for your friendship, your kind words, your P.C. and not so P.C. jokes, your laughter, your sharing of your life with his. Paul was born Oct. 13, 1965, in Longmont and died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in his home in Thornton.

But never, ever will he leave our lives, our hearts, our souls. Thank you Paul, so much for the gift of you. Memorial contributions can be made to his surviving two children, Alyssa and Tabor Miller. A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at Northern Hills Christian Church, 5061 E. 160th Ave.

MINAMYER, Mary

Feb. 29, 1920 - Jan. 8, 2005

Mary Louise Minamyer of Longmont died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Life Care Center of Longmont. She was 84.

She was born on Feb. 29, 1920, in Belmont County, Ohio, to Immanuel and Elizabeth (Hartline) Bennington.

She married Raymond L. Minamyer on Oct. 28, 1939.

Mrs. Minamyer moved to Longmont in 1999 from California.

A homemaker, she was a member of Harvest Fellowship Church in Riverside, Calif., where she was a Sunday school teacher, study leader and singer in the church choir. Mrs. Minamyer will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; four brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Tom Minamyer and his wife Marsha of Norfolk, Va., Mark Minamyer and his wife Vickie of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Richard Minamyer and his wife Lori of Riverside; three daughters, Judy Anderson and her husband Gary of Longmont, Donna Bell and her husband Don of Corona, Calif., and Debbie Barker and her husband Mike of Longmont; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with David Bradshaw of LifeBridge Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory is handling arrangements.

NELSON, David Sidney

March 29, 1931 - Dec. 12, 2004

David Sidney Nelson died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in Denver. He was 73.

He was born March 29, 1931, in Longmont to Carl P. and Ruth M. (Fredstrom) Nelson. He was a graduate of Longmont High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Mr. Nelson served from 1954 to 1956 in the occupation army in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was a retired electrical technician in the defense industry at Rocky Flats. Since retirement, he regularly delivered food from the food bank of East Denver FISH.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Anita Nelson, Marilyn Robertson and Jean Brown.

Mr. Nelson is survived by a brother, Daniel C. Nelson and his wife Helen; two daughters, Sarah Nelson and Ellen Bryla and her husband Bill; four nieces; three nephews; and numerous relatives, including first cousins in Longmont, Fort Lupton and Brighton.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 790 S. Corona St., Denver 80209. The family requests that no flowers be sent.

Memorial contributions may be designated for East Denver FISH or for the church and may be sent to the church address.

A service at Fort Logan National Cemetery will be private.

NORD, Everett Gordon

Nov. 9, 1919 - Jan. 5, 2005

Everett Gordon Nord passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Sacramento, Calif.

He was a loving father of Karen Trefz, Michael Nord and Christine Nord Weisser; father-in-law of Georqe Trefz and Judith Nord; cherished grandfather of Diane Dunagan, Michael S. Nord, Jonathan Weisser, Lauren, Brandon and Christopher Gerstle; great-grandfather of Elaine Dunagan; also survived by 38 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nord was a native of Bloomington, Ill., and a 30 year resident of Sacramento. He was 85.

He was a member of Union Kit Carson Lodge No. 58, Sacramento Scottish-Rite Bodies and Ben Ali Shrine.

Friends are welcome for visitation at W. F. Gormley & Sons Chapel, 2015 Capitol Ave., Tuesday, Jan. 11, from noon to 4 p.m. and are invited to attend the funeral service at the chapel Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Northern California Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

O'DELL, Jeffrey J.,

July 19, 1986 - Jan. 8, 2005

Jeffrey J. O'Dell of Hudson, formerly of Longmont, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at his home. He was 18.

He was born July 19, 1986, to Kelly (Rightsell) Haffner in Longmont. He spent his life in Longmont, except for the past year, which he lived in Hudson with his parents.

Mr. O'Dell was a member of the first graduating class of Silver Creek High School in Longmont in 2004. He was the first wrestler from the school to qualify for and compete at the state wrestling championships in Denver. He loved motorcycles, especially his dirt bike.

He also enjoyed drawing and had an artistic eye; he enjoyed new adventures and always was willing to try something new. He also enjoyed snowboarding.

Mr. O'Dell was diagnosed with osteo-sarcoma in April 2004.

He is survived by his parents, Bryan and Kelly Haffner; a brother, Josh O'Dell and his fiancee Jennifer of Bloomfield, Iowa; two sisters, Amanda Seegrist and her husband Walter of Hudson and Abigail ODell of Hudson; and many other relatives.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont.

A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St., Longmont.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 14800 Old Brighton Road, Brighton.

Contributions may be made to the Jeffrey J. ODell Memorial Fund for Children's Hospital, in care of First National Bank of Brighton, 2707 E. Bromley Lane, Brighton, CO 80601.

Tabor Funeral Home in Brighton is handling the arrangements.

PIERCE, Shawn D.

July 20, 1964 - Jan. 5, 2005

Shawn D. Pierce of Loveland died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at McKee Medical Center. She was 40.

She was born July 20, 1964, in Broken Bow, Neb., to Myron Wayne and Doris Deanna (Parker) Jones.

Ms. Pierce moved from Longmont to Loveland in 1992. She was a customer representative for Home State Bank in Loveland.

She enjoyed shopping, cross stitching and dogs. She liked being involved in her childrens lives and their school activities.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Ms. Pierce is survived by her parents of Loveland; a son, Nathan Pierce of Loveland; a daughter, Nichole Pierce of Loveland; two sisters, Kim Goodson and her husband Rod of Longmont, and Robin Gorham and her husband Tim of Longmont; three nephews; two nieces; six aunts; six uncles; and many cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Crossroads Covenant Church, with the Rev. Scott Oas of Crossroads Covenant Church officiating. Interment will take place at Loveland Burial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shawn Pierce Memorial Fund for her children in care of any Home State Bank Branch.

SHELTON, Claudia

Sept. 29, 1954 - Jan. 7, 2005

Dear friend, daughter, wife and mother Claudia Shelton arrived in her true home with God on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Oklahoma City on Sept. 29, 1954, to Wallace and Mary Conine, now of Longmont. She met her husband and best friend, Don, in college at Colorado State University, and they were married on May 22, 1976. She graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in secretarial sciences in 1975.

Claudia will be greatly missed by her family, including her parents; her husband, Don; her two children, Michael Lee Shelton of Longmont and Tracy Diane Shelton, stationed in Norfolk, Va.; her brother, Gary Conine of Sante Fe, N.M.; and her nephew, Josh Conine of Norman, Okla.

Claudia shared her life not only with her family, but with her coworkers at Texas Instruments and First Christian Church Preschool in Dallas (1976-84), Boulder Valley Christian Church (1985-95) and LifeBridge Christian Church (1998-present). She is probably best known for her commitment to LifeBridge Christian Church, where many of those years she served as ministry assistant to Rick Rusaw, senior minister.

Her life will be remembered for volunteer service in the church, her commitment to her family, her love of traveling and her loyalty to friends.

The memorial service for her will be held at LifeBridge Christian Church on Monday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Claudia to the American Cancer Society or to LifeBridge Christian Church and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont 80501.
