Roger Lee Schuck
7 August 1940 ~ 29 April 2012

With his eyes facing westward toward the mountains and the sea, Roger Lee Schuck completed his journey through hospice on 29 April 2012. Born 7 August 1940 to Miki Rebecca (Johnson) and Lynn John Schuck in Spokane, Washington, Roger spent his childhood in Spokane, WA; Portland, OR; and Kalispell, MT and considered all three cities his 'home town'. Eventually settling on Mercer Island, WA when his father left Northwest Airlines to work at Boeing, he graduated with the first graduating class from Mercer Island High School in 1958. He attended both Washington State University and the University of Washington before graduating from the UW with a degree in Mathematics, and would later earn an MBA from Pacific Lutheran University.
During college, he joined the Navy Reserve, serving on USS Porterfield and USS DuPont. As a naval officer, Roger was hand selected for diplomatic duties. A gifted navigator and engineer, Roger was selected for the Reserve Officer Commissioning program; he was an exceptional naval officer. During his second deployment to Vietnam, in 1967 while Weapons Officer aboard DuPont, he received the Navy Commendation Medal with "V" for valor after successfully engaging North Vietnamese coastal artillery batteries at close range and in shallow water. Countless Marines are alive today because of him.
However, the most important event in his naval career did not come at sea, for it was through the Navy that he met Ensign Laura Lee Wilkerson in 1965. She became the love of his life, and they were married in 1966. They welcomed three children into the world; their daughter, Laura Christine ("Larisa"), and twin sons, Eric Christian and Jonathan Leard.
Leaving the Navy in 1968, Roger worked shortly for Boeing before taking a position at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Rising to the position of Branch Head for Non-Nuclear Test Engineering, Roger retired from the Shipyard in 1993 with nearly 30 years of total federal service. Not content with an idle retirement, he started a second career managing the Kitsap Soil and Water Conservation District and volunteering as a Livestock Master for the Washington State Cooperative Extension Service. He was an avid volunteer, believing in social and community service, continuing his work in Colorado.
Following Laura Lee's retirement from South Kitsap High School, Roger and Laura Lee moved to Loveland, CO to be closer to their grandchildren. Roger was a much beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He was a "salt of the earth" man with uncomplicated tastes - he loved watching baseball games, keeping score and eating peanuts - and a magnificent honorable and loving spirit. He was an "engineer's engineer" who could see, understand, and explain how everything around him worked and who liked solutions that were simple, elegant, and strong - in short, just like he was. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Laura Lee, of Loveland, CO; his brother, Robert Schuck (Leslie Brougham) of Seattle, WA; his daughter, Laura, of Loveland, CO; his son, Eric (Cally Turner; Skyler, Zoe, and Isaak) of McMinnville, OR; his son Jon (Stacy Thompson; Addison and Elizabeth) of Frederick, CO; and many nieces and nephews and beloved extended family.
Cremation has been completed and private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association of Ft. Collins or Heifer International, in care of Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, CO 80537
