Danny Powers
“God loves ya and so do I....” If you have ever heard these
words, then you know the man. On Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 our
friend and dear brother, Danny Powers, passed away. Danny
will lay in repose at the Bear Valley Christian Church, located
at 6800 W. Hampden Avenue (corner of Pierce and
Hampden) in Lakewood. Viewing will be held from noon to 1
p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14. A service will be conducted in the
chapel at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Fort Logan Cemetery,
a short distance away, at 2:30 p.m.
A wake for Danny will be held at the Legion Hut in Fairplay
on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ladies will be
bringing food dishes for all to eat, and the bar will be open.

Theodore “Ted” A. Opp
Theodore “Ted” A. Opp, 97, of Bailey passed away on
November 14, 2003. He is survived by his wife Helen A.
Opp, a niece Luella Doronzo and a nephew Ralph Doronzo.
Funeral services took place on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the
Horan & McConaty Family Chapel. Burial took place at the
Fort Logan National Cemetery with Military Honors by the
U.S. Navy and the V.F.W.
On February 5, 1906 Ted was born to Abraham “Abe” and
Belle Opp in Cripple Creek.
Some of Ted’s fondest memories were his travels with the
Merchant Marines which included several trips to Japan,
China and the Phillipines.
Eventually Ted married Helen A. Eagleson, who became his
wife of 62 years.When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor,
Ted joined the Navy and soon became a Chief Petty Officer
with the Navy “CB’s” (Construction Battalion).
Ted’s first assignment with the CB’s was at Pearl Harbor
rebuilding the battle ships that were so heavily damaged
during the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.
Ted, subsequently, was stationed on Ellis Island where the
CB’s hurriedly (two or three weeks) built an airstrip used to
refuel war planes on combat missions to various islands in
the Pacific.
Ted has also been known for his participation in the VFW for
over 50 years. In 1952, as a member of Post Number 1,
(our nation’s first VFW Post), Ted became commander of the
VFW Department of Colorado, the highest VFW office in the
State. During his term as VFW Department Commander, Ted
had the first TV sets placed in the Veterans Administration
Hospital which had just been completed the year before.
Another accomplishment of Teds while serving as the VFW
Department Commander, assisted by several Denver
dignitaries, was conducting the first “Huck Finn—Becky
Thacher Day.”
Subsequent to his term as Department Commander, Ted
served as Veterans Service Officer for Park County and as
Service Officer for VFW Post 8661 in Bailey. As Veterans
Service Officer, Ted provided assistance to hundreds of
needy veterans.
Edmond F. (Dabby) Cohen, M.D.
Dr. Edmond “Dabby” Fabian Cohen passed away Nov. 18, 2003. He
was born in Denver on March 26, 1909. He came from a
family of early miners and general store owners who settled
in Fairplay in 1871. Dabby attended Corona Grade School,
Marey Jr. High, East High School, the University of Colorado
and the University of Colorado Medical School. He married
Helen Grauman Cohen in 1937 in Denver where they shared
54 years together. He practiced medicine in Denver and
surrounding communities for over 60 years. Cohen lived the
past 12 years at Parkplace Retirement Community.
He loved his family, friends and golf. Helen and he had the
pleasure of traveling around the world many times. Other
interest besides golf included fishing, reading and spending
time in Fairplay. He was also active in many organizations
such as The Jewish Historical Society and served as the
Chief of Staff at Rose Hospital.
He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and
Rose Hospital’s Man of the Year. Cohen was a Professor
Emeritus after teaching at the University of Colorado Medical
School. A proud American, he served in the army during
World War II.
He is survived by his daughter Lesley; son-in-law Greg;
grandson, David, and his wife, Laurinda, all of Colorado
Springs; a granddaughter, Rachel from Atlanta, Ga.; and a
nephew, Richard from Denver.

William “Willie” Flageolle
Willie Flageolle passed away on Nov. 27, 2003. A memorial service
will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Park Bar in
Fairplay. A reception will follow at the American Legion Hut.
Martha E. (Lamping) Hicks
Martha E. Hicks passed away Nov. 11 at home in Englewood
after a long illness. She was born April 23, 1928, to Posey
and Sadie Lamping on a ranch at Crow Hill, Bailey.
Martha’s family were early settlers of the Park County area.
Her paternal grandparents migrated from the East Coast.
James A. Lamping settled in Webster, which was a small
town and a stop for the train to refill its water supply
before ascending Kenosha Pass.
Webster now consists of one home and the Lamping
Cemetery. Martha’s maternal grandparents migrated from
the Midwest and homesteaded the Shawnee area. The Ben
Tyler Trail is named after Martha’s grandfather.
Martha was born and raised in the Bailey area, attending
High School at St. Francis de Sales in Denver, then returning
to the Bailey area in 1947 with Kenn after his discharge
from the Army. Martha was very active in the PTA, Boy
Scouts and 4-H Club.
Martha and her husband, Kenn, moved from Bailey in 1962
because of Kenn’s job, living in Colorado, California and
Illinois. After Kenn’s retirement in 1990 Martha and Kenn
moved back to Englewood.
Martha is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenn Hicks.
She is also survived by sons Ken, Crest Hill, Ill.; Jim of
Englewood; daughter Ellen Palmer of Englewood; nine
grandchildren and one great-grand daughter; two brothers;
Donald and Clifford Lamping of Salmon, Idaho and one
sister, Aileen Johnson of Sedalia. Son Larry preceded her in
death in 1982. Also preceding her in death were three
brothers, Benjamin, Edward and Robert Lamping; and two
sisters, Mary Ella Jesmer and Ruth Powell.
Nancy Goodwin Campbell
A 21-year resident of Bailey, Nancy Goodwin Campbell
passed away at her home Dec. 10, 2003. She was 79.
Mrs. Campbell was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Buffalo, N.Y. She
graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in
political science. She was a Chi Omega and belonged to
AAUW. She was a founding member of Saint Laurence
Episcopal Church in Conifer, where she was active in the
Alter Guild and many outreach programs.
In June, 1948, she married Glover Leigh Campbell in
Brooklyn, N.Y.
A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at St. Laurence
Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, a son Stuart Martin (Sandra)
of Centennial; a daughter Lucy Gail (Thomas) Leuchtenburg
of Potomac, Md. She was predeceased by a son, Gregory
Leigh and a brother Winthrop Garfield Martin, Jr. There are
six grandchildren.

Richard Dean Harrison
Bailey resident Richard Dean Harrison died at his home on
Dec. 17, 2003. He was 21 years of age. Richard was born on July
12, 1982, in Covena, Calif. He graduated from Platte Canyon
High School. His passion was cars, especially his MR-2, and
basketball.
Richard is survived by his mother, Lois Harrison, of Bailey.
A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday,
Jan. 17 at St. Mary’s of the Rockies, 236 Bulldogger Road,
Bailey. Memorials may be sent to the Hemophilia and
