Lloyd Emery Shippey
Bailey resident Lloyd Emery Shippey died Wednesday, May
12, 2004 at Good Samaritan Center of Boulder. He was 87 years
old. Mr. Shippey was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Ft. Collins, to
Marion Valdus Shippey and Bertha May (Emery) Shippey. He
grew up and attended schools in Denver. He served in the
U.S. Navy during World War II.
On Aug. 31, 1940, Lloyd married Elaine Margaret Miller in
Denver, and the couple continued to reside there until her
death in 1992. Lloyd was a talented carpenter, woodworker
and cabinetmaker. He worked for himself and also
contracted with a number of firms throughout his career.
He enjoyed muscle cars, fishing and enjoying the beauty of
Colorado and Wyoming. He was also a devoted husband and
uncle and will be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews.
His wife, Elaine, his parents, a sister, June LaBate and a
brother, Paul, who died as a young child, preceded Mr.
Shippey in death. He is survived by his brother, William and
Nancy Chaussee and their daughter, Cindy of Texas; six
nephews and their families: Mike and Marie Miller and their
daughter Claudia and her husband Gustavo of Santa Fe, NM,
Alan Miller of Arboles, Colo., Tommy Miller and his daughters
Jolene, Jacqueline and Miquela of Grand Junction, Todd and
Linda Miller and their sons Max and Maverick of Pagosa
Springs, Kelly and Pat Miller and their sons, Shane, Chris
and Jason of Pagosa Springs, and Sean and Tawnya Miller
and their sons Shea and Eric, of Longmont; and three nieces
and their families; Karen and Jeff Boden of Erie, and
Kathleen and Mike Pressley and their daughter Nichole
Valdez of Erie.
Mass of the Resurrection was held on May 14 at St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church, Longmont, with the Reverend
Mickey Flaska as Celebrant. Private entombment was held at
Fairmount Mausoleum, Denver.

Jerome Elder Swanson
A memorial service for Jerome Elder Swanson will be held at
2 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2004 at Evergreen Mortuary Chapel,
26624 N. Turkey Creek Rd. There was cremation.
Mr. Swanson’s body was found May 5 in the Hidden Valley
area near Pine Junction after having disappeared April 27,
1998. The cause of death is being investigated by the Park
County Coroner and the Park County Sheriff’s Office.
He was a senior at Platte Canyon High School and worked in
maintenance for the Park County School System. His
interests were in hiking, camping, music, freehand drawing,
and riding and fixing motorcycles.
Survivors include his parents Thomas J. and Terrie L.
Swanson of Bailey and grandparents Shirley and Robert
Oliver of Denver.
Mary Kathryn Bowman
Mary Kathryn Bowman, better known as Rev. Dr. Kady
Bowman, passed away on May 8, 2004 in Denver. She was born on
Sept. 18, 1926, and married Irwin Cone on May 19, 1948.
Mary occasionally preached at the South Park Community
Church as a visiting minister. She owned a cabin at Badger
Creek Ranch for nearly 30 years. She also was a founding
member of the Colorado Board of Trust and one of the
organizations that she contributed generously to through the
trust is the Park County Crisis Center.
She was a member of the Colorado Mountain Club and the
Slick Rockers hiking club and hiked the entire Colorado Trail.
She is survived by her children, Kristi and husband Phil
Czajkowski of Wheatridge, Louanne and husband Steve
Griffith of Bailey; and her grandchildren Raquel and Miranda
Griffith.
Alessandra Rae Vigil
Alessandra Rae Vigil, 18, died May 13, 2004, at Poudre Valley
Hospital in Fort Collins following a severe asthma attack.
Alessandra was born Aug. 28, 1985, in Salida. She
graduated from Salida High School in May, 2003. An
accomplished musician, she loved music and in high school
performed with the choir and the concert and jazz bands,
playing saxophone and clarinet. She was a member of the
National Honor Society, played tennis, was baseball team
manager, was active in drama productions and for two years
served as a FIBArk Paddler.
She was finishing her first year at Colorado State University
in Ft. Collins. She started majoring in political science, but
decided to switch to the science of entomology. She was a
member of the CSU concert band and was accepted to
perform with the CSU marching band when she returned in
the fall. At CSU, she was a member of Sigma Lambda
Gamma Sorority, a group dedicated to promoting Hispanic
culture and heritage. She was a member of Salida’s Los
Amigos.
Survivors include her parents, Andrew N. and Vickie Sue
Vigil, Salida; brothers, Abran and Aaron and special friend
Dollie Perez, all of Ft. Collins and grandparents Anthony and
Virginia Vigil of Salida. Other survivors include her aunt
Vivian (John) Charmley, Salida and Dan Luna, Albuquerque,
godparents; aunts Arlene (Lee) Rogers, Lamar and Annette
Appel, Salida; uncles Anthony (Vanessa) Vigil, Albuquerque;
Dean (Lisa) Scranton, Lamar and numerous cousins and
great aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents,
Dean and Bea Scranton; her uncle, Pete Appel and special
family friend, John “Tito” Quick.
Instead of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Asthma
Foundation or to Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority through
Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, 203 E. Scackett Ave.,
Salida, CO 81201.
James Lewis Griebel
James Griebel, a 14-year resident of Bailey, died on May 19, 2004
at Johnson Center Porter Hospice in Centennial. He was 52.
A memorial service was held May 23 at “The Barn” in
Evergreen Memorial Park.
He was born May 3, 1952 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He had worked
16 years for the Faris Machinery in Commerce City and was
previously employed in sales for Evergreen Disposal System.
On May 24, 1975, he married Constance Geraldine Kreutzer
at the Mother Cabrini Shrine near Golden.
Survivors include his wife; children Jeremy, Jennifer, Jamie
and Joey, all of Bailey; Sister Gloria Anderson of
Westminster and Captain Judy Miller of Oahu, Hawaii, and
brother Roger of Bailey.

Elby Thompson
Elby Thompson, beloved father and husband, died peacefully
on April 17, 2004. Elby was know as the founder of Wags Family
Restaurant where he and his wife, Diana, made a life for
themselves in Tucson since 1984. Elby loved the business
and all his customers and friends, whom he would meet
daily with a smile and a story.
As a young man, Elby delivered bread in Webster City. For
many years Elby owned and operated a very successful
excavating and construction business in Iowa and later in
Fairplay before he and Diana moved to Tucson. Elby’s
greatest joy was making his friends, family and customers
happy and laughing. His infectious smile and warm
personality made him a beloved friend to everyone who was
fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
Elby is survived by the love of his life, wife and best friend,
Diana; sons, Frank (Cheri), Terry (Debbie); daughter,
Helen; grandchildren, Cory, Michael, And Eajae.; and sisters
June, Beulah and Janeta.
Mary Green
There will be a memorial service for Mary Green at Hartsel
Bible Chapel on Sunday, June 13, 2004. A spreading of ashes will
follow the service. The Hartsel Community Center will be
hosting a potluck at 2 p.m. Please bring a dish of your
choice; drinks will be provided. Mary was a special lady both
in the community and the church and will be greatly missed.
