Mildred L. Keto
Longtime Bailey resident Mildred L. Keto passed away on
May 2, 2005 at the age of 87. She was born on Oct. 17, 1917, in
Ironwood, Mich. A former food service employee, Mildred
loved baking and spent her happiest hours in the kitchen.
She was previously active in the Finlandia Foundation of
Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband of
68 years, Toivo, who passed away in March. She is
survived by a son, Lee Keto and daughter-in-law Sandi of
Baja, Calif. and daughter Luana Smart and son-in-law
Colin of Keystone and Bailey. She has seven grandsons:
Eric, Kevin and Robert Keto, James, John and Jason Cook
and Matthew Smart and seven great grandchildren.
Services were held on Tuesday, May 10 at the Valley
Lutheran Church in Denver.

Arthur Lamar Moore
A longtime Bailey resident, Arthur Lamar Moore, died May
5, 2005 at North Valley Rehabilitation Center in Thornton. He
was 63. Burial was May 10 at Horn Cemetery.
Arthur was born Dec. 27, 1941, in Tupelo, Miss. He moved
to Bailey in 1982. For 18 years he was a machinist for
Oakley Tube Inc. in Denver. He was an avid wood cutter.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a daughter Shirley Peak of Thornton;
sons, Arthur, Jr. of Montana and James of Bailey. There
are eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be sent in his memory to the American
Cancer Society, 2255 Oneida St., Denver, 80224.

Luke Grant
Luke Grant, 1996 graduate of Platte Canyon High
School, was killed on his motorcycle April 29, 2005 in Santa
Barbara, Calif.
Luke moved to Santa Barbara following
graduation from the University of Colorado at
Boulder with a degree in Environmental Design.
He was practicing architecture in Santa
Barbara and a part-time marine chief engineer in
Alaska. He was an avid surfer, mountain biker and a
member of a rock band. His recent activities can be
viewed on the band’s website, www.neverdown.net.
He is survived by his sister Kristen of Santa Barbara,
brother Ben of Pine, and his parents, Steve and Peggy of
Grand Junction.
A Celebration of his life was held at his childhood home in
Pine Junction on May 21.

Elizabeth June Durham Davis Knight
Elizabeth June Durham Davis Knight was born August 3,
1924 and passed away May 15 at San Simeon, Calif. Betty
was the fifth child of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Durham, Sr. in 1942
she married Fred (Jack) Davis. To this union, two children
were born, her daughter Barbara Ann Fagg of Craig and
her son, Donald Jack Davis of Alma.
In 1964 Betty married Tom Knight and moved to Fairplay.
She and Tom purchased and managed the Fairplay Hotel.
When Tom was hired as the State Fair Manager they
moved to Pueblo and lived on the Fairgrounds. Betty loved
horses and dogs, her horse Scooter and dogs, Ginger,
Rags and Muffin were very special to her.
In 1990 Betty moved back to Fairplay where she worked
at the South Park Museum. In 1997 Betty moved to Buena
Vista to the Sunrise Manor. She received several awards
for volunteer work. She was a representative from Buena
Vista for the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Government
and also for AARP in Buena Vista. She served as Recording
Secretary for Buena Vista Seniors Young at Heart. Betty
was awarded the VFW Auxiliary, and spent years
volunteering at the South Park City Museum.
Betty is survived by her two children, five grandchildren,
Joel (Anne) Davis of Memphis Tenn., Jennifer (Ron)
Rogers of Aurora, Michael (Lisa) Davis of Fairplay, Betty Jo
Sheets of Globe, Ariz., and Beverly (Jeff) Salazar of Craig;
five great-grandchildren, Jamie, Piper and Alyssa Davis,
Tonya Sheets and Amber Salazar; one sister, Avis Self,
Craig; two brothers, Almon (Faye) Durham of Farmington,
New Mexico, and George (Sharon) Durham of Craig.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harry
of Axial, and two sister, Dorothy Williams of Hayden and
Edna Schrader of Colville Wash.
Memorial Services will be held at Grant’s Mortuary on June
4 at 2 p.m. with interment at Craig Cemetery. Memorial
donations may be directed to The Anglican Church of The
Savior in Buena Vista or the Buena Vista Heritage Museum.

Betty Durham Knight
Memorial services for former Craig resident Betty Durham
Knight will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Grant
Mortuary in Craig. Interment of cremains will be in the
Craig Cemetery.
Mrs. Knight is the mother of Don Davis of Alma, Colo. and
Barbara Fagg of Craig, Colo. Mrs. Knight was a resident of
Buena Vista at the time of her death.
Memorial donations may be made to the Buena Vista
Heritage Museum or the Anglican Church of the Saviour in
Buena Vista. Donations may be sent in care of Grant
Mortuary, 621 Yampa Ave., Craig, CO 81625.

Harold Warren
Harold Warren, Park County Historian passed away June 4,
2005. Harold was born Oct. 19, 1911 in Clay Center,
Kansas. Harold and his wife Lenore made a life searching
for and finding traces of Indians in Park and Jefferson
Counties. They lived in Park County near Bailey for over
50 years. He has been researching history most of that
time as well as writing numerous articles for the Fairplay
Flume. He was founder and President for six years of the
Park County Historical Foundation. He had also been
Captain of Troop A of the Colorado Mountain Rangers
when they head quartered at Bailey, Commander of the
Sheriff’s Posse, leader of an NRA Junior Rifle Club and
taught Hunter Safety Classes for the Colorado Game and
Fish Department.
Harold has given historical programs to the schools for
many years, as well as to other organizations. He is fondly
known as “The Park County Historian.” He was an
employee of the Social Security Board, U.S. Geological
Survey and is retired from the U.S. Forest Service.
Harold is survived by son Jon Warren, daughters Gael
Phipps and Nancy Webb as well as grand children Bill and
Jim Douthett, Naomi Cheney, Ruth Wood, Dale Jacobs,
Angel Homm, Jon Gipson, Brian and David Warren and
numerous great and great-great grandchildren. He was
proceeded in death by his beloved wife Lenore, June 4,
2000.
Services will be at Aspen Mortuary 1350 Simms St.,
Lakewood on June 11. Viewing 9:30-10:30 a.m., Memorial
Service at 10:30 with graveside immediately after at Horn
Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Entriken cabin at
McGraw Memorial Park in Bailey following the graveside
service.

Geoffrey Scott Betz
Geoffrey Scott Betz of Fairplay, Colo. died on June 11,
2005, at the age of 56.
Scott was born in Ness City, Kan. in 1949. He moved to
Colorado in 1979 where he worked as a miner.
He is survived by his wife, Margo; three children, Becky,
Jason and Julie; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Mary; two
brothers, Mickey and Duart; and two sisters, Ann and
Taunda.
Scott will be missed by all who were blessed enough to
know him.

Dennis Lien
Dennis Lien, owner of the Twin Spruce in Grant,
Colo., passed away on June 17, 2005. He is
survived by son, Brad; daughter, Lisa; and son-inlaw,
Cal. A celebration of life will be held on July 3
from noon to 6 p.m. at his home. Please join us.

Carl Pierce
Carl Pierce, age 82, passed away in his home in Buena
Vista on July 4, 2005. He was born Oct. 15, 1922, in
Broken Arrow, Okla. to Everett and Carrie Pierce. Carl
joined the Army in 1942, serving with the Army Engineers
in the South Pacific during World War II before being
discharged in 1945.
He married Dorothy Randall on June 4, 1950, in Buena
Vista. They moved to Fairplay where Carl worked as Town
Marshall and maintenance man and served as an on-call
deputy sheriff. He also worked for Park County Road and
Bridge Department before going to work as a maintenance
man for Colorado Department of Transportation.
While living in Fairplay, he served on the town council,
volunteer fire department, and was commander of the
Silverheels V.F.W. In 1975, Carl transferred to Buena Vista
as a mechanics helper with the Colorado Department of
Transportation, where he retired in 1988.
He was a member of Mt. Princeton Lodge No. 49 AF & AM,
Topaz Chapter No. 27 Order of Eastern Star, American
Legion Post No. 55.
Carl is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughter Becky
(Collin) Galloway of Hayden, Idaho; son Richard Pierce of
Steamboat Springs; granddaughters Jennifer and Shannon
Galloway of Idaho; and grandson Richie Pierce of Liberty
Lake, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents;
infant twin daughters; sister Thelma Dodge; and brothers
Ray, Ernest and Eldon.
Funeral services were held July 9 at Congressional United
Church of Christ.
