Everal Louise Wartner
Pine resident Everal Louise Wartner, age 84, died
Wednesday Sept. 28, 2005, in Evergreen. Services were
held Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic
Church in Conifer with interment of cremated remains at
Calvary Cemetery in Marshall, Minn.
Everal was born Everal Louise Brosseau on Jan. 28, 1921,
in Marshall, Minn. She married Everett Harold Wartner on
Jan. 16, 1946, in Marshall, Minn. She was a member of
the Catholic Daughters of America from 1954-2005, Ladies
Auxiliary VFW from 1946-2005, TOPS of Conifer, Colo.
from 1985-1999 and Golden Eagles of Our Lady of the
Pines from 1993-2005. She retired as a bookkeeper from
Material Distributor Inc., her husband’s business, in 1979.
Other activities included being a homemaker, travel,
needlepoint, playing the piano, gardening, staying in touch
with friends and relatives.
Everal is survived by two children, daughter Rose Marie
Wartner-Chaney and husband Don of Pine; and son John
Paul Wartner of Pine; three grandchildren, Joseph of New
York, NY, Jacob of Pine and Jeremiah of Lakewood; and
one sister Sylvia Gee of Marshall, Minn. Her husband, a
brother and her parents precede her in death.

Douglas K. Larson, Ph.D.
Douglas K. Larson, Ph.D., of Bailey, Colo. passed away on
Oct. 17 at the age of 54. He is survived by his wife Kay;
his sons Quinn and Kurt; his stepson Matthew Flood; his
father Jack; his stepmother Sharon; his brothers Michael
and David; and his sister Jackie.
Doug was a loving husband and father. He was a
passionate advocate and educator of global sustainability.
As an entrepreneur, Doug was proud to have been a
leader in developing the hydrogen fuel cell market.
Services were held Monday at the Newcomer Family West
Metro Chapel. Cremation followed. In lieu of flowers,
please make a contribution to National Public Radio.
Stuart Franklin Rawlings
Longtime Fairplay resident Stuart Franklin Rawlings,
age 75, entered into glory Nov. 5, 2005.
Services were held Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at Fairplay American
Legion Hut.
Stuart was born in Santa Monica Cali. on March 28, 1930.
He attended Long Beach City College.
Following college he joined the U.S. Navy Sea Bees, serving
in the Philippines.
He ended his Naval Service as a 2nd Class Petty Officer. He
then served in the Naval Reserves.
He married Donna V. Hielscher Aug. 21, 1956 at Wee Kirk
of the Heather in Las Vegas, Nev. He served his
community as a Cub Scout Pack Leader Pack 135 and as a
Boy Scout Troop Leader Troops 141 and 142 in Riverside,
Cali. He was recognized many times with awards for his
continued leadership skills.
He was active in the American Legion in Riverside, Cali.
Stu was a successful business owner in both California and
Colorado. He was also a truck driver. His final business
was a day care center that both he and his wife operated.
He’s known as Grampa Stu to all of the day care kids.
Stu’s other interests were varied. He was a believer in
Christ as Lord and Savior and attended California Heights
Community Methodist Church in Long Beach, Cali. as a
young man. He was an avid environmentalist believing in
preserving our natural wonders. He loved to fish, hike and
camp. He enjoyed geology and collected rock samples. His
second love was Colorado and he wanted to be
remembered as a true Mountain Man. Mining also
interested him and he operated the gold pan booth at
Burro Days annually. He struck it rich one year by
guessing the winning time for the men’s burro race. He
was active in his community in many ways but was
especially proud of his work in helping to lay sod for our 2
Mile High Stadium.
Most of all he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather,
great grandfather and friend. He is survived by Wife
Donna V. Rawlings of Fairplay. Sons John Alan Rawlings
(Lori) of Cabot, Ariz; Anton Ray Eaks; Stuart F. Rawlings
Jr. (Laura) of Manassas Va; and Laurence E. Rawlings.
Daughter April E. Attaway (James). 11 Grandchildren, 3
Great Grandchildren, 2 Sisters Jannet Larsen and April
Penaranda of Cali; many cousins, nephews and nieces. He
will be missed.

Jean H. Howey
Long-time Jefferson resident Jean H. Howey passed away
on Oct. 24, 2005. Jean was born in Jefferson on Sept. 2,
1925 and lived there most of her life. She attended school
in Jefferson and graduated from East High School in
Denver. She also attended Colorado State University.
She married her husband, Gene Howey, on June 12, 1949.
Together they owned and managed the Jefferson Store for
over 45 years.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband and her
brother James W. Head. She is survived by her daughter
Cindy Mefford (Brent) of Lakewood, Colo. and her son
Barry Howey (Julie) of Valparaiso, Ind. as well as four
granddaughters: Teal, Teann and Brenna Mefford and
Andrea Howey.
Wilbur Junior Pierce
Born on Feb. 23, 1929, he left this world for a better one on
Nov. 2, 2005. He grew up and spent most of his life in
Jefferson, Colo. and most recently moved to Grand Prairie,
Texas.
He was a most loving and dedicated husband of 55 years
to Bettie Jean Pierce of Grand Prairie and an adoring father to
his children: Cherie (Herb) Van Schooten of Paonia, Colo.;
Michael (Betty) Pierce of Las Chavez, NM; and
Laurie (John) Scaggs of Grand Prairie.
He was “Pa” and a most loving grandfather to his precious
grandchildren: Tammy (Alan) Weston of Grand Junction,
Colo.; Brandi and Michael Scaggs of Grand Prairie;
Bethany (Artie) Nunez, Jessica (Adam) Barrera and
Michael Painter of Albuquerque, NM. Two great grandchildren,
Austin Barrera and Nehemiah Nunez also of
Albuquerque. He was a most loving brother to Barbara
Temple of Hanford, Calif. and a loving uncle to many
nieces and nephews.
He owned an operated Pierce Truck Line of Jefferson and
served the Park County community and the South Park
Agricultural Community for their transportation needs until
he retired in 1992. He was an honorable discharge veteran
of the United States Navy where he served as an aircraft
mechanic and a fireman. He helped form and served many
years as a volunteer for the Jefferson/Como Fire
Department in the capacity of Chief, set on the Board of
Directors and as a volunteer fireman.
Services were held at the Bean, Massey and Burge Funeral
Chapel on Nov. 7 with burial at the Grand Prairie Memorial
Gardens in Grand Prairie. He was so loved and will be
greatly missed by all.
James Parker Shields
Montrose resident James Parker Shields, age 84, died on
Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Valley Manor Care Center. He
and his wife previously lived in the Platte Canyon area for 15
years.
James Parker Shields was born on Nov. 10, 1921, in Chicago,
Ill., the son of Lewis Wesley and Grace (Green) Shields. His
family moved to South Haven, Mich., where he grew up and
graduated from high school. Jim loved living on the lake
and spent a lot of happy times in sailing and sailboat
races. On a trip to Colorado, Jim fell in love with the
mountains and decided that was where he would choose
to live.
He entered the Merchant Marine Academy and, upon
graduation, entered the United States Navy as an officer.
Jim was honorably discharged in 1946.
Jim met Nella Mona Shirley when he visited his uncle in
Hotchkiss, Colo., and again at the University of Michigan,
where they became engaged. They were married in
Denver in 1943 and had two children.
The Shields family did a lot of jeeping. After retirement in
1982, Jim and Nella Mona enjoyed traveling in their RV
and spending winters in Arizona. They moved to Montrose
in 1990, where Jim dedicated his time to volunteer service
at their church, Hillcrest Congregational United Church of
Christ, spending one morning each week at the Montrose
County Historical Museum and the Montrose Gun Club,
where he was a junior rifle safety instructor.
He is survived by his wife, Nella Mona; two sons: James
Carl, of Moriarty, NM.; Keith Lewis, of Las Vegas, Nev.; six
grandchildren: David and Mike Shields, Wendi Deach, of
Virginia, Parker Shields, of Oklahoma, Kim Shields, of
Copper Mountain, Colo., and Katie Shields, of Arlington,
Texas; three great-grandchildren: Amber, William and
Evan Deach, of Virginia; one sister, Rachel Scott, R.N., of
Bemidji, Minn.; and two brothers: John Shields, M.D., of
Traverse City, Mich., and Paul Shields, Ph.D., of Seattle,
Wash.
