Harold Goltzer

Harold Goltzer, former associate principal bassoonist with the New York Philharmonic, died peacefully at his home in Carbondale on Dec. 4. He was 89.
Goltzer was born on Nov. 15, 1915, in New York. He studied bassoon with the legendary Simon Kovar, a member of the New York Philharmonic, and at the Juilliard School of Music as a recipient of the New York Philharmonic Scholarship. He graduated from that institution in 1936.
During this time, he was a member of the National Orchestral Association, whose faculty he later joined. In 1937, he became a member of the Columbia Broadcasting Symphony, as well as recording with many radio and television orchestras, including Bell Telephone, Firestone, Omnibus, and the NBC Opera among others. In 1958, Goltzer became associate principal bassoon of the New York Philharmonic, a position he held until his retirement in 1983.
In addition to his active performance schedule, Goltzer was a teacher, serving on the faculties of the Hartt School, the Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, the Manhattan School of Music and Queens College. He was also a member of the Aspen Music Festival for many summers, from the 1950s into the 1990s. Goltzer's students now perform in major orchestras throughout the world and have remained in close contact with their mentor. His organized-scale studies are practiced by many generations of students worldwide. Since his retirement, Goltzer has resided in Colorado.
Goltzer was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Marcelle Cayton Goltzer; his brother, Irving, and sister-in-law, Anne Goltzer; and his sister, Dorothy, and brother-in-law, Joseph Starley. He is survived by his brother, Albert, and sister-in-law, Doris, of Westport, Conn.; his son, Eric, of Philadelphia; and daughter, Dana Coppolino, of Marble.
Also, his adored grandchildren, Alyssa Ohnmacht, and grandson-in-law, David Savard, of Marble; John Ohnmacht, of Boulder; Andrea Goltzer, of Aston, Pa.; and Elizabeth Goltzer, of Norristown, Pa.; his cherished great-grandchildren, Olivia and Erica Savard, of Marble; his many nieces and nephews; and his many students who became like members of his family.
Services were privately held. The family offers sincere thanks to the many caregivers and health workers who gave selflessly of their time during the past few years.

Ted Gordon

Longtime Aspen local Ted Gordon, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.
Gordon was born in New York City on Jan. 2, 1924, to Charles and Lillian Gordon. As a young man, he was a professional boxer, training and sparring with former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta.
Following an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he lived in various locations throughout the United States before settling in Aspen in 1956, where he worked as a bartender at the Red Onion and Hotel Jerome. He also owned three restaurants in Aspen: The Blue Moose, Teddy's Rendezvous and Theodore's. After leaving the Roaring Fork Valley in the late '60s, he put down roots in Fort Myers, Fla., with his wife, Janet, where they raised their two children.
In Fort Myers, Gordon was involved in the community, teaching youth boxing programs and organizing a bike race series in Cape Coral. An avid exerciser for his entire life, he enjoyed tennis, lifting weights, running, skiing and bike riding.
Gordon moved back to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1988, settling in Basalt. Over the next five years, he worked at the Grand Champions Club (now the Maroon Creek Club) as a bartender and boxing instructor. In 1995 he returned to Florida, settling first in Fort Myers and finally living the last 18 months of his life in The Villages, a retirement community north of Orlando.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter Ellyn Laskey and son-in-law Mitchel Laskey; son Phillip Gordon; son Anthony Gordon and daughter-in-law Melissa Gordon; son Blake Curton; son Mark Gordon and daughter-in-law Corrie Gordon; daughter Annie McMurray and son-in-law Mike McMurray. Gordon is also survived by 13 grandchildren. A memorial service is to be planned for 2005 on the top of Aspen Mountain.
Kathleen Mary Oken

Kathleen Mary Oken found peace in the arms of her loving husband, Tom, the evening of Dec. 6 as she died at her home in Snowmass Village. Kathleen's 15-year-old daughter Caitlin and sisters Colleen and Char were also by her side, and, as she wished, her dogs Little Guy and Janie were nestled in bed with her.
Born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 17, 1951, to Clete and Katherine Reymann, she grew up in Tiffin, Ohio. She graduated from Calvert High School in 1969 and then Providence School of Nursing in 1972 as a registered nurse. In 1974 she moved to Denver to work on kidney transplant research at the University of Colorado Medical Center, then moved to the Aspen area in 1978, settling first in Redstone.
In 1981, she began a 22-year nursing career with Orthopaedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood Springs, holding positions of office nurse, first assistant in surgery, and clinical supervisor. Kathleen was a continual learner and in 1991 was certified as an orthopedic nurse practitioner. In 1995, she began her own business providing custom-fit knee braces while continuing to work part time at Orthopaedic Associates. She blended traditional and alternative medicine in her practice and helped many residents and visitors with their aching knees.
Kathleen was an avid traveler, scuba diver, jewelry maker and gardener. She loved to work in her yard, and her free time was spent creating a living monument in and outside the house with flowers, plants, and trees. Her home is vibrant and beautiful because of her care.
Kathleen was a nonsmoker and very health conscious, so her diagnosis of lung cancer 14 months ago came as a shock. She fought her cancer with a strength and courage that no one who knew her will ever forget. Her colleagues, friends and family rallied to her support, and made her realize more than ever before how much she was loved.
She continued to travel and plan, and her faith and spirit grew, even as her body weakened. Her relationship with St. Benedict's Monastery flourished. She strengthened the bonds that connected her family and friends, journeying to help her sister Maureen in Kentucky and drawing great solace from her family's visits to her. Those she leaves feel terrible grief and enormous loss but will cherish her memory and the inspiration her bravery provided.
Kathleen leaves behind her husband of 16 years and daughter; her father, Clete, of Tiffin; her brothers Larry (Cira) of Renton, Wash., and Jim (Gena) of Gig Harbor, Wash.; her sisters Colleen Reymann and Char (Bud) Hering of Bellevue, Wash., and Maureen Laux of Louisville, Ky.; her sister-in-law Nancy (Jim) Sheldon of Apple Valley, Minn.; and her nieces and nephews Brian and Patrick Reymann, Colin and Riley Hering, Carolyn and John Laux, Mike Sheldon and Laura (Chad) Vandertop.
A funeral service will be held at the Snowmass Chapel at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 8. Immediately following the service, a dinner celebration of Kathleen's life will be hosted by the Oken family at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Schermer Meeting Hall.

Frederick G. 'Rick' Lloyd

Rick Lloyd, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and formerly of the West Coast died Sunday, Dec. 5, at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland.
Rick was born April 27, 1935, in Sebewaing, Mich., the son of William Thomas and Mazie Evelyn (Bright) Lloyd. He married Marilyn Burnett in April 1979.
He lived in the Aspen area from 1980 to 1990, and owned and operated a hot air balloon company. He also worked as a music promoter. He was an avid historian and friend of Bill W. for 25 years.
Rick is survived by his wife, Marilyn Burnett Lloyd of Weidman; sons, James Burnett and Terry Bonnau of Weidman; daughter, Debbie Edsall of Colorado; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Arlen and Janell; and a special friend, Jo Redman from Hospice of Central Michigan.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by Lux Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Mt. Pleasant.

Stephen Butts

Former Aspen resident and long-time Telluride local Stephen Butts, 48, died tragically Tuesday, Jan. 18, from injuries sustained in an avalanche while heli-skiing in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. Steve was with many of his closest friends when the accident occurred.
An avid outdoorsman, golfer, sailor and expert skier, Steve passed into the next world doing what he loved - powder skiing with friends in the Canadian Rockies. He was a fantastic pilot who loved to burn jet A fuel.
As founder and owner/broker of Telluride Properties Inc., Steve will always be remembered for his uncompromising commitment to quality in everything he did. He was a savvy entrepreneur and one of the driving forces behind putting Telluride on the map in the luxury real estate world.
Steve spent much of his time traveling the world with friends and family. He enjoyed the finest in everything life offered, and shared this passion with all who crossed his path.
Above all else, Steve was a passionate family man. He leaves behind his two beautiful daughters, Kailee and Caroline, who were his greatest pride; his former wife, Heidi Winslow; his loving best friend and partner, Amy Taylor; and all of Telluride. His father M. Parker Butts preceded Steve in death. He is also survived by his mother, Joan Foster Butts; his aunt Jacqueline Foster; his sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Gerard Hoar, and their children, Emily and Lindsay, all from New England, as well as hundreds of friends throughout the world.

Harland Adams
Longtime Aspen resident Harland Adams died Nov. 28, 2005, two days after his 73rd birthday, at Cape Canaveral (Fla.) Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Adams, his son, Rhett Snyder of Boulder, and his daughter, Tiffany Adams of Ward.
Harland was well-known in Aspen/Snowmass - he named the ski run Adams Avenue at Snowmass, through a lottery by the ski company. He owned a cabin between the Campground run and Lower Powderhorn, with views of Mount Daly. He and Donna lived in Merritt Island, Fla., but maintained a condominium in Snowmass, where they visited, summer and winter.
No definite plans for an Aspen memorial service have been made.
Beatrice 'Susie' A. Hoff

Beatrice A. Hoff, known as Susie, 67, died after fighting cancer on Jan. 27 in Pueblo, where she had been residing in recent years.
Susie, daughter of Dorothy and Elliott Cook, was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Duluth, Minn., where she was raised and graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. On Feb. 17, 1967, she married Harvey Hoff, her lifetime partner, who survives her. She also is survived by David, Eric and Judy Burlingame and her family of many close friends. Harvey, who was president of the Bank of Aspen, and Susie spent many years working and living in the Aspen area in the '60s and '70s.
Susie's life was filled with passions. She was an accomplished equestrian, a watercolor artist, a concert violinist and ski instructor. She frequently enjoyed tennis, travel and golf, scoring a hole in one in 2004. Susie was a friend and confidant to the people and animals whose lives she touched. She was also a volunteer and longtime supporter of the Southern Colorado Spay and Neuter Clinic. She will be missed more than words can express.
In lieu of flowers, food or memorials, Susie asked that donations be made in her memory to the Southern Colorado Spay and Neuter Clinic, 1700 South Prairie Ave., Pueblo, CO 81005. Per her request, there will be no memorial service.
Bonnie Brucker Rayburn

Bonnie Brucker Rayburn, a longtime resident of Aspen, gracefully passed away at her home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, Feb. 26.
Bonnie was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on March 13, 1941. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Getzville, N.Y. She would often reminisce about her joyous memories spent with parents Carlton and Dorothy Schultz, her beloved two sisters, Dallas Jantzi and Carlene Wochensky, and their love of the outdoors.
While attending the State University of New York College at Cortland, Bonnie was a member of Nu Sigma Chi sorority, president of the synchronized swim team, and an involved member in the arts and theater. Bonnie and her friends loved to ski. They organized the Cortland "ski team" and would go night-skiing weekly. After graduating in 1962 with a degree in physical education, Bonnie packed up her "blue rambler" and along with a friend they headed for the mountains of Colorado. She settled in Denver where she taught dance and individual sports at George Washington High School. Bonnie and her friends formed the Shush-Boomers ski club, and after tearing up the slopes at A-basin, they would terrorize the Red Ram bar in Georgetown.
On Christmas Eve 1964, Bonnie married Hans Brucker, after six dates. They were wed by a justice of the peace at the Pitkin County courthouse and were accompanied by Hans' three young sons. Upon making her home in Aspen, Bonnie taught dance to both children and adults, was a board member of the Aspen Ballet, a member of the Community Service Board and a founding member of the renowned Mother Puckers. Bonnie was most passionate about teaching cooking classes to children involved in the 4-H program.
In 1980, after the death of her husband Hans, Bonnie was approached by longtime friends Peter and MaryAnn Greene to run a restaurant on Aspen Mountain. Together they created the well-known Bonnie's restaurant, and for the next 17 years, it was Bonnie's love for both food and people which drew everyone into her passion for life. Her philosophy was simple: all customers were on an even playing field, food was to be great, and everyone would have fun working.
In 1985, Bonnie married Donald Rayburn and for the next 20 years they enjoyed bike trips in Europe, skiing, windsurfing, summers in Quebec and being entertained by their grandchildren. Whether it was tending to her garden, hiking with her friends, bicycling, yoga, attending Hall of Fame meetings, experimenting with a new recipe, or courageously living with ovarian cancer, Bonnie taught us all how to celebrate life's beauty.
Bonnie is survived by her husband Donald Rayburn; daughter Missen Brucker; son Hans Brucker, his wife Corin and their children Anders and Sasha; stepsons Andy Brucker, Eric Brucker and his wife Terry and their children Erica and Ingrid, the late Gary Brucker's children Danen and Greta; and her stepdaughters Dena Rayburn Lane and Anita Rayburn.

Lisa Ann Asbill Morgan

Lisa Ann Asbill Morgan, 44, a resident of Snowmass Village and former resident of Lubbock, Texas, was killed in Colorado on Feb. 15.
She was born Aug. 10, 1960, in San Diego. Lisa was raised in Lubbock and attended Coronado High School, class of 1978. Lisa was the oldest of five children and had two grown sons. Her first grandchild had just arrived.
Lisa was a certified underwater welder, a dive master and an avid skier. Lisa was the former manager of the Playhouse Toys and owned a scuba diving school when she resided in Lubbock. Lisa moved to Florida, where she owned a live rock business before she relocated to Albuquerque and ultimately to her beloved Aspen.
Lisa was employed by The Snowmass Club in the engineering department for the past 4 years and had just begun a new job with Timberline Condominiums. Even as a young girl Lisa loved attending summer camp and spending time outdoors. Whether on the beaches of Mexico or the ski slopes in Aspen she was the happiest when the sun was shining on her face. Lisa will be greatly missed by her heartbroken family.
She is predeceased by her father, Smith L. Asbill Jr., M.D. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Asbill of Albuquerque, her sons Benjamin Furstenwerth of Arkansas and Greg Furstenwerth of Washington.
She is also survived by her grandson Adrian of Arkansas and her siblings: Leslie Prichard and husband Troy of Albuquerque, Robert Asbill and wife Julie of Bella Vista, Ark., Lea Anne Oliver and husband Todd of Waco, Texas, and Laurel Kressler and husband Rob of Albuquerque, and nieces and nephews Brian, Brishel, Jake, Brooke, Alex, Morgan, Ashlea, Chris, Cody, and Austin.
Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas, with the Rev. Tedd Dotts presiding.
Peter Andrew Brinkman

Peter Andrew Brinkman was born in San Francisco on Oct. 3, 1930, and died in Los Angeles on Jan. 31, 2005.
Peter loved skiing, college football and sailing. He played football for the University of Washington Huskies in the early 1950s, and remained a devoted Huskie fan. Peter received an MA in architecture from the University of Washington in 1967 and was involved in building projects throughout his life. He designed and built his homes in Los Angeles and in South Lake Tahoe, where he also built the Christiana Lodge in 1961.
Peter spent most of his life on ski mountains throughout the West. He was the ski school director at five resorts, including Heavenly Valley in South Lake Tahoe, Aspen Highlands (where he was also the winter sports director in 1970), Bear Valley/Mt. Reba, Telluride and Kirkwood Meadows. Most recently, he was the sports director at Caesar's Palace in South Lake Tahoe.
He is survived by his beloved, Ann; his daughter, Melissa Greis and granddaughter, Grace Greis; nieces and nephews, Paul Brinkman Jr., Timothy Brinkman, Jeannine Brinkman, Lisabet Brinkman and Maria Brinkman. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 24, at noon at St. Martin of Tours Church in Brentwood. Father Donal Keohane will officiate.

Herta Mueller

Herta Mueller was born on Jan. 5, 1909, in Cologne, Germany. She died on Dec. 3, 2004, in Aspen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, who passed away on March 25, 2004, in Aspen. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom live in Germany.
Herta immigrated to Chicago in 1928. She continued her education there, studying English, American government and history. She successfully passed her citizenship exam and became a proud American citizen.
In 1939 Herta married Walter, and together they established a successful portrait and commercial photography studio. Both Herta and Walter were avid skiers and made many ski trips to Colorado. In 1959, they settled in Aspen, where they quickly embarked on several real estate ventures. In 1974, they designed and built their present home in Pitkin Green.
A memorial service is scheduled for Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Aspen Chapel, 77 Meadowood Drive at the Aspen roundabout.
