PAUL JAMES GERDES
Born January 11, 1926 in Valley City, North Dakota to William A. and Esther Gerdes.
Paul attended grade school in District 27 of Wayne County, Nebraska from 1931 until 1939 in a one room schoolhouse and Wakefield High School, Wakefield, Nebraska from 1939 until 1943.
He served in the US Army from 02-17-1944 until 05-20-1946 and was stationed in Europe and Germany with the 725th Field Artillery Battalion, earning three battle stars.
Paul received his bachelors degree in history from the University of Pittsburgh, which he attended from 1946 until 1950. He then attended the University Nebraska at Lincoln from 1950 until 1952 and earned a Juris Doctor Degree. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He was a member of the Nebraska and the Colorado Bar Associations. In August 1950 he married Marian Miller, who preceded him in death in January 1970. Together they had two children, Janet and Jay. Paul first practiced law in Lexington, Nebraska from June of 1952 until August of 1958. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1958 and worked as a claims adjuster for Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company from 1958 until 1963. He was admitted to the Bar of the Colorado Supreme Court in February of 1960. He formed a law partnership with George Gibson, Filmore Gibson and Clinton Cole in January 1965.
In 1972 he married Geraldine Hennes and subsequently adopted her four children: Denis, Geoffrey, Suzanne, and Sean. Paul and Gerre had two children together, Julia and Jonathan. While in Colorado, Paul served as the City Attorney for the city of Fountain for 26 years. Paul was also an active member of many civic organizations during his time in Colorado Springs.
Paul passed away March 13, 2002 in Meadow Vista, California.
Paul enjoyed sports cars, riding bikes, walks in the mountains, and attending sports events such as soccer, basketball, hockey, figure skating, and football games. He enjoyed supporting all of his children and grandchildren's hobbies. His favorite actor was John Wayne. He had a passion for reading, especially history books. He spent the final years of his life with his children, living with Jonathan in Colorado Springs, Jay in Fort Collins, and Janet in Meadow Vista, CA. He was able to visit his sisters Edith in Baton Rouge, LA and Joanne in Cookeville, TN, before returning to Northern California. His sought to ensure his youngest children were secure and that all of his children knew he loved and cared about them. There was never a doubt that Paul would have done anything possible for his children. He was a dedicated and loving father, a friend, and a tremendously giving person. He will be missed.
He is survived by his sisters, his second wife, all of his children, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Monday, March 25th 2002 at 11:00 am at Holy-Cross Lutheran Church, 4125 Constitution Ave. with a brief grave side service to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Donations should be made to either Holy Cross Lutheran Church or the National Parkinsons Foundation.
ETHELENE I. PAYNE
At 76 years of age, Mrs. Ethelene I. Payne passed away at her home at 17573 Sultana Street in Hesperia, California, on March 9, 2002. She was born in Grady County Oklahoma on April 20, 1925.
She is survived by William G., son, Juanita I. Trudel, daughter, Donald E., son, Jerry L., son, Robert A., son, Steven M., son, and Susanne M. King, daughter. She had 13 grand children and 19 great-grand children.
A viewing will be held on March 14, from 10 AM - 1PM at Alternative Funeral Services in Victorville, California. Services and burial will be held March 14, at 2 PM at Desert View Memorial Park in Victorville, CA.
B. FRANKLIN FRANK HARBISON
B. Franklin �Frank� Harbison passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Peaks Care Center, Longmont, Colorado. He was 91.
He was born March 4, 1911 in East Las Vegas, New Mexico to Benjamin Franklin Harbison, Sr. and Katle Norman Harbison. He moved with his parents to Rocky Ford, CO at the age of 18 months. Growing up in Rocky Ford, Frank attended schools there and graduated from Rocky Ford High School in 1932. In 1930 he studied Aircraft mechanics in San Diego, CA.
Frank married his first wife Bertha M. Teats in May of 1933 in Rocky Ford, CO. She preceded him in death April 1967. He married his second wife Bernice (Roseler) Wayman November 1968 in Longmont, Colorado.
Frank moved from Rocky Ford to Colorado Springs, CO in 1934 and then to Longmont in 1967.
During his working life Frank worked seven campaigns at the American Crystal Sugar Company in Rocky Ford. He had a 45 year career in building construction, 15 years as a carpenter, 15 years as a partner with George O. Teats and Sons building contractors of Colorado Springs. (Notable buildings constructed were the North Power Plant and First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, along with many schools, telephone buildings, other churches and fine homes.) He spent his last 15 years as a field inspector for architect James Hunter of Boulder, CO. (Notable buildings � Student Center and other buildings at C.S.U. campus, dormitories at Ft. Lewis College and two buildings at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder; architect Charles Ingles of Ft. Collins, CO. (chemistry building at C.S.U.) and architects Wheeler and Lewis of Denver, CO. (Notable buildings being Lyons High School, Heritage Middle School, Sunset Middle School, Longmont Estates Elementary School.) Frank retired in 1976 at the completion of Thompson Valley High School in Loveland.
Frank and Bernice spent 19 winters, 1976-77 through 95-96 in Casa Grande, Chandler and Apache Junction, AZ.
He enjoyed camping with Bernice in their travel trailer for many years in Colorado, and taking many trips in the United States and Canada.
Frank enjoyed attending Church. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church since he was 12 years old. Him memberships have included the First Presbyterian Church in Rocky Ford, CO, the First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs and since 1968, the Central Presbyterian Church of Longmont. He has served the church as Elder and Trustee, and sang tenor in many church choirs for over 40 years. He also sang with the Lost Dutchman Mobile Home Park and the DoReMe choral groups in Arizona. He enjoyed music all his life, playing the violin, piano and organ.
During his active life he enjoyed deer hunting, taking photographs and putting together slide shows.
He was a member of Carpenters Union 515 in Colorado Springs; the Knife and Fork Club Colorado Springs and Boulder; and active at the Longmont Senior Citizens Center.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by one great-grandchild.
Frank is survived by his wife Bernice of Longmont, sons Robert Lee Harbison of Seattle, WA and John Richard Harbison of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Donna Harbison Douglass and husband James Pearsall of Lynchburg, VA; sister Irene Smith of Lakewood, CO; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Also survived by step-son Ralph Richard Wayman of Cathedral City, CA; nephews Donald Sherwood Cohu and family, and Gary Sherwood and family, all of Colorado Springs; nieces Patty Jo Teats Bruggeman and family, and Janet Teats Berridge and family of Colorado Springs, and Kay Cohu Fulton and family of Rocky Ford, CO.
Visitation was held Thursday, March 21, 2002 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. The casket will be closed for the funeral service. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Friday, March 22, 2002 at Central Presbyterian Church, Reverend Glenn Perica and Reverend Marilyn Yoder Boeke officiating. Interment will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Valley View Cemetery, Rocky Ford, CO. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Colorado Boys Ranch or Central Presbyterian Church, in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
HIRAM H. CHURCH, Jr.
Hiram H. Church, Jr., 69, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on March 14, 2002, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was a longtime resident of Colorado Springs. Hiram was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Hiram H. Church, Sr. and Viola Church, who preceded him in death.
He served in the US Air Force for four years. He loved music.
Hiram is survived by his ex-wife, Sherry A. (Church) Smith; five sons, McArthur
Church, Hiram Church III, Ricky Church; Shane Church, and Kenny Church; two daughters, Hope T. (Church) Peniagua and Stephanie M. Church; one brother, Luthrell Church; 20 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 pm, Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Swan-Law Cascade Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm. Burial will be at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs.
