Joe Lyle Castle

Memorial services for Joe Lyle Castle, 67, of Dolores, will be held Monday, Sept. 27, at the Dolores Community Center beginning at 3 p.m.

Joe was born in Durango, Colo., on May 19, 1932 to George L. and Genevieve Ebler Castle. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999.

Joe was a lifelong resident of La Plata and Montezuma counties. He spent most of his life as a long haul truck driver and ranched as a sideline. He enjoyed working as a guide for hunting outfitters. Joe loved to fish and was a great cook.

He is survived by three sons, Bret Castle, of Dennison, Texas, Pat Castle, of Gilmer, Texas, and Jay Castle, of Cypress Springs, Texas; his daughter, Nichole Harrison, of Longview, Texas; four grandchildren; a sister, Georgia Weems, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and two nieces.

Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Elsie May Hinkle Stanley

Funeral services for Elsie May Hinkle Stanley, a lifelong resident of Lewis, will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Lewis Cemetery.

Elsie was born the daughter of Warner David Hinkle and May Bell Powell Hinkle on Dec. 14, 1906, in Stillwater, Okla. She passed away at the Pine Street Care Center on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at the age of 92.

She and Ollis Vere Stanley married in Lewis, Colo., in 1928. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Elsie and Ollis ran the Lewis Post Office and gas station for many years, with Elsie serving as Postmaster for 20 years. She was a member of the Lewis Friendship Club and the Methodist Church.

Those surviving her are her two sons and their wives, Richard and Betty Stanley, of Lewis, Colo., and Robert and Marlene Stanley, of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and her sister, Iris McAfee, of Lewis. In addition to her parents and her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Suzanne Stanley.

Ertel Funeral Home will be in charge of the funeral services.

Arveda Grace Hawk Wolford

Memorial services for Arveda Grace Hawk Wolford, a lifelong resident of Cortez, will be held Sunday, September 26, 1999 at the Cortez First United Methodist Church beginning at 2 p.m.

Arveda died on Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at Madison House in Cortez. She was 90 years old. She was born on February 20, 1909, at Buelah, Colo., the fourth child of Gertie Mae Hill Hawk and Arthur Hawk. They moved to the Cortez area the year of her birth. Arveda attended Cortez High School and Western State College, graduating in 1928. She began her teaching career at Aztec School, nine miles south of Cortez. She subsequently taught at Blue Door, Downey, Mesa, and Kemper Schools, in all, 20 years in Montezuma County.

Arveda is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cortez and a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Cortez Chapter.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Jean Rogers, of Vacaville, Calif., and T. Lynne Rains, of Deary, Idaho; two sons, Wayne Wolford, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Dean Wolford, of Durango, Colo.; 10 granddaughters, two grandsons, and 14 great grandchildren. Her husband of 58 years, Theral D. "Pete" Wolford, preceded her in death in 1988.

Memorial contributions can be made in Arveda Wolford's name with Madison House, 120 S. Madison Avenue, Cortez. Arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Virginia Rose Lee

Graveside services for Virginia Rose Lee will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 22,1999, at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 21, starting at 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Virginia was born on Aug. 25, 1911, in Edgewater, Colo. She died Sept. 16, 1999, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos.

Virginia is survived by one nephew, Allen W. Lee from Dolores, two nieces: Callie Maxine Miller from Grand Junction, and Norma Jane Butler from Hot Springs, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor Henry Lee and Hattie Moore Lee.

She was a 50+ year member of the Radiant Chapter #12 Order of Eastern Star in Denver, Colo.

Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Ariel 'Dee' Jones

Memorial services for Ariel "Dee" Jones, a resident of Rico, were held Sunday, September 19, 1999 at the Rico Community Church beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Jim Patton officiated. Following the memorial services, a potluck was held at the Rico Courthouse.

Ariel was born the daughter of Charles B. and Ariel Civilla Lobberecht Strandquist on June 25, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. She died at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., on Tuesday, September 14, 1999, at the age of 65. Ariel had worked as an ICU nurse at Southwest Memorial Hospital for 18 years.

She is survived by her three sons, Mark E. Jones, and his wife, Shelly, of Grand Junction, Colo., G. David Jones, of Bend, Ore., and Todd Jones, and his wife, Kim, of Rico, Colo.; three grandchildren, Wyatt Mathew Jones, of Rico, Amanda D. Jones, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Tyler Jones, of Bend, Ore.; a brother, Bud Strandquist, of Denver, Colo.; two nieces, and numerous cousins, and friends.

Memorial contributions can be made in Ariel Jones' name with the Rico Fire Department. Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Ida Harvey

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, 1999 for Ida Harvey, 77, of Rockhead, Utah. Services were conducted at the Montezuma Creek LDS Church at 10 a.m. with Bishop Leo Platero officiating. Interment followed at the family cemetery at Rockhead.

Mrs. Harvey was born March 3, 1922, in Aneth, Utah to Tony and Feddie Clah. She passed away at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock on Friday, September 10, 1999. Her husband Ben Harvey, of Rockhead, Utah survives her.

Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Mary Adell Coppinger

Funeral services for Mary Adell Coppinger, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Thursday, September 16, 1999, at the Mancos L.D.S. Church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Bishop Dan Whitehead will officiate.

Mary was born in Dolores, Colo., on March 21, 1919, to Leon Mulnix and Edna Kuykendall Mulnix. She passed away at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, on Sunday, September 12, 1999, at the age of 80.

Mary was very active in her surrounding communities. Volunteering her time to others, she served on the Mancos Library Board for 9 years, worked as an Outreach worker in Mancos and Dolores for 5 years, and for more than seven years she volunteered at the Mancos Senior Center. Mary was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Organization, the Mancos Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years, and for 50 years she belonged to the Mount Lookout Grange. In 1999, Mary was named Mancos Days Queen.

Those surviving her are her sons and their wives, Delbert and Pam Coppinger, of Mancos, and Bill and Gwen Stephens, of Greeley, Colo.; her daughter, Roberta Greenlee, of Cortez; and her grandchildren, Farrell Greenlee, Kirk Coppinger, Miki Hone, Kale Coppinger, Cassie Coppinger, and Amy Stephens. Her parents and nine siblings preceded her in death.

Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

James (Jim) L. Baughman

Memorial services for James Lester "Jim" Baughman, 65, of Cortez, will be held Tuesday, September 14, 1999, at the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75 beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Jimmy Kennedy will officiate. Interment services will be held Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Iowa.

Jim was born October 1, 1933, in Bloomfield, Iowa to Harlan Tracy and Florence Iola Bollman Baughman. He died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez.

On August 9, 1953, Jim married Carolyn Mae Downey in Pulaski, Iowa. They had just celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

Jim loved pheasant and quail hunting, as well as fishing. He had been a member of the Masons for 25 years, and also was a Shriner. He belonged to the Cortez Elks Lodge #1789.

Jim's work career in the Cortez area included working for Nielson's, Mountain Gravel, Perry McDonald Construction, and Triple L Construction as a heavy equipment operator.

Jim leaves behind to mourn his death, his wife, Carolyn Baughman, of Cortez; his daughters, Vicki Lough, and her husband, Jim, of Bloomfield, Iowa, Connie Baughman, and her friend, Mark, of Mesa, Ariz., Robin Carver, and her husband, Alvin, of Cortez, and Sandi Pierce, and her husband, Donny, also of Mesa, Ariz.; his son, Kyle Baughman, and his wife, Gayla, of West Des Moines, Iowa; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, and one brother.

Memorial contributions can be made in Jim Baughman's name with the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75, 320 N. Harrison, Cortez. Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home, Cortez, Colo.

Sallie Amelia Collom

Graveside services for Sallie Amelia Collom, a former resident of Cortez and current resident of Sacramento, Calif., will be held Saturday, September 11, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Jonathan Bland will officiate.

Sallie was born June 14, 1912, in Aspermont, Texas, to William Thomas and Henrietta Utley Swink. She passed away in Sacramento on Monday, September 6, 1999, at the age of 87.

She is survived by her children, Thaddeus Collom, of California, Val Ray Collom, of Arizona, Joanne Collier, Jeannie Roberts, A. B. Collom, Eula Parish, Alvin Collom, and Jerry Collom, all of California; and 46 grandchildren and 89 great-grandchildren.

Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

Josephine T. Holder

Graveside services for Josephine Theodora Holder, a resident of Mancos, were held Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at the Webber Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Clyde Eugene Holder officiated.

Mrs. Holder died Friday, September 10, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 70. She was born July 12, 1929, in Mancos, Colo., to James Theodore and Minnie Dorothy Ewing Bailey.

Her husband, Clyde Holder, of Mancos, survives her; as well as her children, Cary D. Srader, Roberta Melina Srader, and Craig Hood, all of Sacramento, Calif.; step children Gene Holder, of Fruita, Colo., Sharon Singer, of Phoenix, Ariz., Betty Welch, of Cortez, Leslie Gregory, of Sullivan, Ill., and Tracy Simmons, of Mancos, Colo.; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her sister, Stella Bauer, of Mancos; and a brother-in-law, Kenny Bauer, also of Mancos. Josephine's son, Ted Srader, preceded her in death in 1998.

Ertel Funeral Home conducted the services.
