Alvira Ann 'Alva' Burnett

Graveside services for Alvira Ann "Alva" Burnett, a longtime Cortez resident, will be held Saturday, March 11, at the Summit Ridge Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Dr. Richard D. Rupp will officiate.

Alva was born in Ouray, Colo. on March 27, 1903, the daughter of Rufus W. and Cora Alice (Dunlap) Marley. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, March 8, 2000. She was 96 years old.

Surviving Alva are two nephews, Richard D. Rupp, and Marvgene Marley; and a niece, Gladys Jayme. Her husband, Jerry Burnett, preceded her in death.

Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

Karen Diane Smith

Services for Karen "Diane" Smith, 55, of Cortez, will be held at the Cortez Cemetery on Wednesday, March 15, beginning at 3 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Dan Rhodes of the Cortez First Baptist Church. Ertel Funeral Home is in charge of the services.

Ms. Smith passed away at her home in Cortez on Friday, March 10, 2000. She was born in Durango, Colo., on Nov. 18, 1944, to Charles K. Herndon and Betty Irene (Pruner) Herndon.

Surviving Diane are her parents, Chuck and Wilma Herndon, of Cortez; two sons, Troy Hart, of Moriarty, N.M., and Scott Martin, of Cortez; and a daughter, Tanya Gardner, also of Cortez. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Casey, Laura, and Dalton Wyatt, Heather, Cody, and Colton Martin, and Kalyn Gardner. Preceding her in death was her mother, Betty Herndon.

Elizabeth (Betty) Schmaltz Green

Cortez resident, Elizabeth (Betty) Schmaltz Green, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 7, 2000. She was 78 years old. Betty was cremated.

A farewell will be observed at the Ertel Memorial Chapel Thursday, March 9, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friends and family are encouraged to come by Ertel Funeral Home any time during these hours to sign the register book and enjoy photographs from Betty's life and to reminisce.

Graveside interment services will be held at Green Lawn Cemetery at 20th and Dustin, in Farmington, N.M. on Friday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m. Father Tim Farrell will officiate.

She was born in Page, N.M., on Feb. 11, 1922, the daughter of George Schmaltz and Margaret (Mildenberger) Schmaltz.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Joyce Trade-Howard, of Lake Dallas, Texas, and Gayle Fearis Bishop, of Ocala, Fla; her grandchildren, Nikki Blackmer Flingos, of Ocala, Fla., Daniel Davis, of Mesa, Ariz., Dana Trader-Gough, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Casey Blackmer, of Dolores, Colo., and Dustin Trader, of Denton, Texas; and her great grandchildren, Daniel, Austin, Emily, and Courtney.

She is also survived by two sisters, Helen Woods, and Joann Nichols, both of Farmington, N.M.; and her brother, David Schmaltz, of Gallup, N.M.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; her husband Ed Green, former owner of Cortez Locksmith; a son, Gary L. Green; a daughter, Martha Ann Fearis; three brothers, George, Manuel, and James Schmaltz; and one sister, Catherine Schmaltz-Johnson.

Ertel Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Clara Phillips Johnson

Clara Mae Phillips Johnson, retired school nurse and lifelong resident of Montezuma County, passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on March 7, 2000 after a lengthy illness at the age of 74.

She was born July 18, 1925, at the old homestead west and south of Ackman, Colo.

Mrs. Johnson attended schools in the rural areas of the county and in Cortez. She graduated from Cortez High School in 1944 and then entered the Cadet Nurse Program and completed her training at Mercy Hospital in Denver in 1947.

She married Thomas Johnson on Aug. 28, 1947, in Cortez.

As a registered nurse, she first worked at Mercy Hospital in Denver, and after the couple returned to Cortez to make their home, she was employed at Southwest Memorial Hospital, and later as an office nurse for Dr. C.E. Parmley.

In 1962, she joined the Montezuma County Health Department as a school nurse for the Cortez district. Later, she joined Cortez District Re-1 as their school nurse, a post she held until illness forced her retirement in 1986.

Mrs. Johnson was active in the local nurses’ association for many years and in 1958, Gov. Ed Johnson appointed her to a five-year term on the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners.

Over the years, Clara continued her professional studies at both Saint Louis University and the University of Colorado.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Tom; two children, Theresa Maynes and her husband, Byron, of Cortez; a son, Tommy and his wife, Susan, of Cleveland, Ohio, and one sister, Hallie Pugh of Cortez.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Sara and Hallie Harrison; Megan, Kammy and Christopher Johnson; Aaron and Kelly Maynes and six great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Ellis and Tina Hurley Phillips; two brothers, Robert and John Phillips; four sisters, Beatrice Miller, Rosalee, Velma and Mildred Phillips.

Louie R. Sutherland

Former Dove Creek resident, Louie R. Sutherland, passed away in Joplin, Mo. on Monday, March 6, 2000. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 10, at the Peel Cemetery beginning at 3 p.m.

Louie was born in Reynolds County, Mo., on March 13, 1905, to Tillman Sutherland and Margaret (Strauther) Sutherland.

Louie is survived by his wife, Noble (Chitwood) Sutherland, whom he married on April 19, 1989, in Joplin, Mo. He is also survived by his daughter, Geraldine White, of Bedrock, Colo.

Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

Weldon Tabbee

Weldon Tabbee, a resident of Des Moines Iowa, and former resident of Towaoc, passed away march 5, 2000 in Des Moines. He was 32 years of age.

A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in the Four Corners Funeral Chapel. Father Joe McGuiness will officiate. Interment will follow the services in the Towaoc Cemetery.

Weldon was born on Feb. 7, 1968 to Clyde and Regina Marie Price Tabbee in Cortez. He attended school and grew up in the Cortez and Towaoc area. Weldon moved to Denver, and then to Des Moines, where he lived for eight years, and worked as a landscaper.

Weldon enjoyed playing basketball, fishing and being with his family and friends, laughing and enjoying life.

Weldon Tabbee is survived by his wife, Kristina (Evans) Tabbee and son Nathan of Des Moines; brothers, Lewis Price and Cecil Tabbee of Towaoc; sisters, Ann Tabbee, Raina Lansing and Magelna Lansing, all of Denver, and Ernestine Tabbee of Des Moines. He is also survived by four nieces, seven nephews, four uncles and aunts, and many other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clement Tabbee.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors, is serving the family.

Fred 'Lloyd' Palmer

Memorial services for Fred "Lloyd" Palmer, a 51-year Durango resident, are pending. Mr. Palmer passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Monday, March 6, at the age of 88.

Lloyd was born in West Plains, Mo., on Aug. 31, 1911, the son of Robert Daniel Palmer and Amanda Cecilia (Peterson) Palmer. A carpenter most of his life, Lloyd had also farmed and ranched around Cedar Hill, N.M. during his early years.

Lloyd is survived by his son, Lloyd Raymond Palmer, of Grand Junction, Colo.; two daughters, Alice Amanda Chapman, of Delta, Colo., and Karen Sue Cugnini, of Cortez; 12 grandchildren, Nick, Kim, Debbie, Pati, Kathy, Stephanie, Tracey, Daniel, Mick, Amy, Christina, and Becky; and nine great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lloyd had a very large extended family at Lori's Restaurant with whom he shared much of his life. He will be greatly missed.

Ertel Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Tim Flanagan

Tim Flanagan passed away Saturday morning, March 4.

He lived in California, but his heart was in Colorado. He has been coming to Colorado for more than 25 years, hunting and visiting his son, Jim Flanagan and family. He made many friends here in Cortez and will be greatly missed. He enjoyed coming up here every year to help Jim with planting and his cattle, hunting prairie dogs and elk, and just enjoying the scenery.

He had a great passion for shooting. We will carry the memories of this great man forever, and we hope that you will never forget how he touched us all.

A memorial service is planned in Simi Valley, California, where he resided. At his request, please make memorial contributions in his name, to the NRA.

Lucille Nocki Begay

Funeral services for Lucille Nocki Begay, a lifelong resident of Aneth, Utah, will be held Saturday, March 4, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Cortez Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Jack Nakai.

A weaver and sheepherder, Lucille was married to Ben Nocki Begay. In addition to her husband, Lucille is survived by several of her children Three of her children, Amelia N. Begay, Nelson Nocki, and Everett Begay, preceded her in death.

Also surviving Lucille are 48 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, three sisters, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her brother and sister predeceased Lucille.

Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

James A. Coyle

James A. Coyle, 57, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Ohio with Rev. Mark Ghiloni officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, with military graveside rites by James Dickey Post American Legion. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m., or from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth, where Recitation of Rosary and Prayer Services will be held at 8 p.m.

Mr. Coyle, was born in Portsmouth on June 3, 1943, to Hester E. Ray Coyle and Raymond Coyle. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

Jim joined the U.S. Navy at 18 and served 26 1/2 years, being honorably discharged at the rank of First Class Petty Officer. Following his discharge he was employed as a managerial consultant for MAN Con and later had a rural route for the Portsmouth Daily Times.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea Coyle; sons Jacob Coyle, Nathan Coyle and James Coyle II; daughters Sarah Coyle; Diana (Michael) Zook; Sandy (Kevin) Jones; and by his stepson, Matthew King.

He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Jane (Bob) Jones; Anna Malone; Kathie (Bob) Meinrod of Dolores; and Barbara (Gary) Montavon; brothers Stephen Coyle and John (Barbara) Coyle; and several nieces and nephews.

James Coyle was preceded in death by his father, and one sister, Peggy Coyle Alig.
