Donald D. Sifford

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Bayfield Community Cemetery, in the 300 Block of County Road 501, for Donald D. Sifford, a former resident of Bayfield, who died May 26, 2001, at his home in Aztec of cancer. He was 77.

Mr. Sifford was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Spur Lake, N.M. He married Myrtle Crumbley in Las Vegas, Nev., on Dec. 12, 1945.

Mr. Sifford grew up near Silver City, N.M. He entered the Army in 1943 and served during World War II in the South Pacific. Mr. Sifford received various honors and medals including a Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1945 and moved to Colorado in 1946.

Mr. Sifford worked for Rio Grande Motorway for 32 years as a truck driver. He and his wife bought a ranch in Bayfield in 1982, where he lived until 1998. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and active in posts at Bayfield and Durango. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and country-western music.

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sifford.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Sifford of Aztec; two sons, Kenneth Sifford of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Leroy Sifford of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Ola Allen and Leah Helton of Dolan Springs, Ariz.; a brother, Denton Sifford of Selma, Calif.; a great nephew, Ron Kinsey Sr. of Ignacio; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dudley Leon Weaver

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Baptist Indian Mission, 301 Goddard Ave., in Ignacio, for Dudley Leon Weaver, a Durango native, who died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center. He was 51.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Rev. Kelly Winlock will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held from noon to 8:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio on Friday.

Mr. Weaver was born Nov. 18, 1949 in Durango. He was raised in the Ignacio area.

Mr. Weaver traveled to Denver with the Dove Creek Bulldogs baseball team for an all-state competition as a pitcher. He joined the Army during the Vietnam War. He was well-known on the Southern Ute Reservation, and he coached fighters at the George Manzanerez Fight Nights.

Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by a daughter, Leah Shannon Weaver.

He is survived by a daughter, Leane Dawn Weaver of Ignacio; four sisters, Hazel Weaver, Betty Howell, Ella Louise Weaver and Anna Weaver Joy of Ignacio; two brothers, Oliver Weaver Sr. and Michael Tom of Ignacio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James and Margaret Slaten

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Florida Cemetery, 2065 County Road 225, for James L. Slaten Sr. and Margaret T. Slaten, who were longtime Durango residents.

Mr. Slaten died April 9, 2001, in California. He was 73.

Mrs. Slaten died on July 2, 1999, in California. She was 74.

Mr. Slaten worked for Frontier Airlines and Miller Motor Company. Mrs. Slaten was a registered nurse.

Rev. Jerry Boles will preside at the service. A reception will follow at Florida Presbyterian Church, 1024 County Road 230.

Becky Lucas

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at 6839 Highway 140, Red Mesa, Colo., for Becky Lucas, who died May 12, 2001, in an automobile accident. She was 46.

Mrs. Lucas was a homemaker and enjoyed golfing and handicrafts.

Funeral services were held in Rawlins, Wyo. May 18, 2001.

Sam V. Costa

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Sam V. Costa, a longtime resident of Durango, who died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at his home in Durango. He was 85.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Th Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Costa was born April 23, 1916, in Pueblo, Colo.As a young man, he worked on Gene Autry’s ranch handling livestock, including Autry’s horse, Trigger.

He later served in the Navy during World War II and spent 28 years with the Los Angeles City Fire Department’s Mountain Patrol.

Mr. Costa retired and moved to Durango in 1975, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Ketty, of Yuma, Ariz.; a son, Sam Costa Jr. of Los Angeles; and a daughter, Charlene Rouss of Hawaii.

Ruby H. Schoser

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date for Ruby H. Schoser, a nurse, who died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango following a prolonged illness. She was 87.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mrs. Schoser was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Flora Vista, N.M. She married Leo Otto Schoser on May 17, 1940, in Durango. Mrs. Schoser attended school in Bayfield and then Mercy School of Nursing. She nursed at the old Community Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Dr. Rensch and then for Dr. Murray for 25 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Corbin of Durango; grandchildren, Patti Newton of Boulder, Brett Newton of Littleton, Eldon Newton of Lakewood; great-grandchildren, Steve, Josh and Trevor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Schoser, on March 11, 2001.

Veda K. Holt

A private memorial service will be held in Hailey, Idaho, for Veda K. Holt, who died May 14, 2001 in Mancos of natural causes. She was 92.

Mrs. Holt was born February 26, 1909 in Kremlin, Okla. She married William Harry Holt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harry Holt; a daughter, Melba Ward; and a son, Robert Holt.

She is survived by a son, William D. Holt of Durango; a daughter, Marge Closson of Santa Fe; a niece; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be sent to The Valley Inn Nursing Home, 211 Third Ave., Mancos, CO 81328 for a tree planting memorial for Mrs. Holt.

Carol V. Wommer

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Carol V. Wommer, who died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 77.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate at the services. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at Sacred Heart. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Wommer was born July 22, 1923, in Louisiana, where she was raised. She moved to Durango in 1984 to live with her son, Henry Wommer Jr. She worked as a store clerk and enjoyed gardening, reading and art.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Wommer Sr.

She is survived by her son, Henry Wommer Jr. of Bayfield.

Joseph Garrett 'Gary' Baker

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Cortez for Joseph Garrett "Gary" Baker, who died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his home in Bloomfield, of cancer. He was 52.

Chaplain Brad Perry will officiate at the service. Full military services will follow.

Mr. Baker was born Jan. 3, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. He married Maxine Baker June 30, 1973, in Fowler, Colo.

Mr. Baker joined the Army in 1968 and was a decorated Vietnam veteran with two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. After an honorable disability retirement from the Army, he worked as a heavy-equipment operator and surveyor in Colorado. In 1983, he moved to Cortez where he worked as an inspector for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Dolores River Reclamation Project. He also worked as a real estate specialist in the Bureau of Reclamation office in Farmington until his retirement in April. He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Bloomfield; three brothers, Pat Baker, David Baker and Paul Baker; two sisters, Teresa Boyland and Barbara Thompson; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Memorials can be sent to the Northwest New Mexico Hospice, 608 Reilly Ave., Farmington, N.M., 81401 or Collie Rescue in Longmont, Colo.

Brenda Cruz Chavez

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, No. 10 County Road 6523, Kirtland for Brenda Cruz Chavez, an Aztec resident and member of the Southern Ute Tribe, who died Feb. 10, 2001, near Ignacio. She was 40.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Arnold Yazzie will officiate at services. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, No. 10. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Farmington.

Mrs. Chavez was born Nov. 17, 1960, in Phoenix. She later moved to the Four Corners region, where she most recently worked as an administrative assistant at the Environmental Programs Division of the Southern Ute tribal government. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed beading, crafts, camping and sculpting.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ireland Joe Sr.

She is survived by her husband of six years, Reuben Chavez; two sons, Brandon and Bryan Chavez of Aztec; a daughter, Kristie Chavez of Aztec; a granddaughter, Brandy Nicole Chavez of Aztec; her mother, Stella Mae Joe of Shiprock; and three brothers, Oreland Cruz Joe Sr. of Kirtland, Roland Cruz Joe of Shiprock, and Orval Cruz Joe of Sheep Springs, N.M.
