Peter Macchiarini

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club for artist Peter Macchiarini, who died July 3 in San Francisco of complications from pneumonia. He was 91.

There was cremation.

Mr. Macchiarini was born Aug. 27, 1909, on the Wohler Ranch in Sonoma County. He moved to Italy in 1923 with his family where he studied art. He returned to the United States in 1928 and worked as a stonecarver with several Bay Area firms.

He was a pioneer in the field of avant-garde jewelry and also organized the first San Francisco outdoor art festival in 1939. He maintained a studio and shop on Grant Avenue for more than 50 years and was instrumental in founding – with the help of his wife, Virginia – the Upper Grant Avenue Street Fair in 1953, an event that spawned similar artist-run festivals in the Bay Area and beyond.

Mr. Macchiarini was the recipient of dozens of awards in his long career. In 1980, he was awarded a gold medal from the Association of the Lucchesi nel Mondo, which annually recognizes those who bring honor to the Italian Province of Lucca through personal merit as citizens abroad. In 2000, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors renamed a portion of Kearny Street near Telegraph Hill in his honor. On June 29 of this year, the supervisors declared Mr. Macchiarini an official "San Francisco Legend" for his contributions to the local culture.

He is survived by his son, Daniel, of San Francisco; two daughters, Laura Macchiarini Langdon of Durango and Nella Macchiarini of Berkeley; two sisters; three grandchildren, Mark Chapin of Glenwood Springs, Matt Langdon of Los Angeles, and Emma Macchiarini Mankin of San Francisco; and one great-granddaughter, Sheena Marie Chapin of Glenwood Springs.

David Delo Herrick

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Parque de Vida in Cortez, for David Delo Herrick, a longtime Cortez resident, who died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 69.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Herrick was born July 19, 1931, in Denver. He married Patricia Hardy on June 11, 1954, in Fort Collins.

Mr. Herrick served in the U.S. Army. He moved to Cortez in 1959 and opened the Cortez Animal Clinic. He was a member of the School Reorganization Committee in Cortez in the 1960s. He served two terms on the Cortez City Council and he also served on the Water Conservancy Board. He held offices as a Democratic County chairman and president of the Colorado Veterinarian Medical Association.

He enjoyed acting and skiing.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Herrick of Cortez; three children, Gail Ann Herrick of San Francisco, James Hardy of Cortez and Jeffrey Bryan Herrick of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Dorothy Jean Terry of Umpqua, Ore.; four grandchildren; three nephews; and a niece.

Memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of Montezuma, 1108 N. Mildred Road, Cortez, CO 81321, in David Herrick’s name.

Frances Katherine Thomas

Frances Katherine Thomas

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary in Durango for Frances Katherine Thomas, who died Thursday, July 5, 2001, in Santa Clara, Calif., of natural causes. She was 90.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Durango.

She established a full-service beauty salon and raised two daughters on her own. She married Pat Thomas, former city manager of Durango, and later moved to Florida.

She moved to California to be with her daughters after her husband’s death.

She was preceded in death by her husband and daughters, Connie O’Connell and Bobbie Groves.

She is survived by a brother, Mike Connor of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandsons; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Rose Candelaria

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Durango for Rose Candelaria, who died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango of natural causes. She was 87.

The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate at the service. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Candelaria was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Lumberton, N.M. She was a homemaker and lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Candelaria.

She is survived by her children, Virginia Romero and Carrie Wiggins of Durango, Donald Candelaria of Arvada, Mike Candelaria of Northglenn, and Liva Arellano and Nora Pena of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers, Filbert Gallegos of Delta, and Joe M. Gallegos and Phillip Gallegos of Salt Lake City; sisters, Annie Gallegos of Delta and Maria L. Long of Durango; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.

Lin Crawford

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave., for Lin Crawford, a former member of the Mancos Fire and Rescue Department, who died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 85.

The Rev. Jim Wright will officiate at services.

Mr. Crawford was born March 27, 1916, in Pagosa Springs and was raised in the Durango area. He moved to Mancos in 1944. He did construction work on the old Fort Lewis near Hesperus and on the Navajo Indian reservation.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Mancos, and a brother, Robert, also of Mancos.

Eloise Foltz Tinnin

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango for Eloise Foltz Tinnin, who died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center of natural causes. She was 97.

The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Tinnin was born Nov. 23, 1903, in Las Animas. She moved to Bayfield with her family in 1918 at the age of 15. She married Wilmer W. Wells in 1921.

She and her husband started Wells Cafe in Bayfield, the first place in town where people could by a hamburger or sandwich. The Wells marriage ended in 1942.

Mrs. Tinnin married Adrian Tinnin in 1949. The couple moved to Durango in 1951. She managed the S & H Green Stamps Department at Graden Mercantile Company in Durango for 17 years.

She is preceded in death by two husbands, Wilmer Wells and Adrian Tinnin; and a daughter, Wilma Piccoli.

She is survived by a son, Byron L. Wells of Boulder; grandchildren, Diana Caviggia and Michael Piccoli of Durango, Theresa Morris of Victorville, Calif., Ron Wells of Boulder and Dawn Peters of Phoenix; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Frank Gregory Gonzales

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Church in Silverton for Frank Gregory Gonzales, who died Saturday, June 30, 2001, in Auke Bay, Ala. from natural causes. He was 45.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mr. Gonzales was born Sept. 15, 1955, in Durango. He later moved to Silverton and worked as a miner. He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by three daughters, Valarie Brock and Bryn Gonzales-Ellis of Durango and Theresa Wolt of Ridgecrest, Calif.; his mother, Antonia Gonzales of Silverton; a sister, Angeline Hughn of Denver; two brothers, Robert Gonzales of Denver and Steven Gonzales of Tempe, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn Brock of Durango and Taylor Wolt of Ridgecrest, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

David Russell Glenn

David Russell Glenn of Glendale, Ariz., died Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Arizona of cancer. He was 56.

Mr. Glenn was born on March 1, 1945, in Bellflower, Calif. He married Joyce Glenn on June 9, 1973, in Mangum, Okla.

Mr. Glenn graduated from Bayfield High School and Fort Lewis College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in managerial economics. He served in the U.S. Navy as a journalist.

Afterward, he worked for radio and television stations before returning to Durango in 1975. He helped run the Treasure Tunnel gift shop in Durango with his parents. In 1980, Mr. Glenn moved to Phoenix and started a family business, Fiesta Tiles.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three children, Michael, Amanda and Derek; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bette Gayle Graves

Memorial services are planned for a later date for Bette Gayle Graves, of Durango, who died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at her home of cancer. She was 61. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Ms. Graves was born on July 31, 1939, in Grand Junction. She attended school in Bayfield and graduated from nursing school at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix in 1960.

She worked as a nurse in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Phoenix. She returned to the Durango area and worked as a nurse for Community Hospital and Mercy Medical Center, the U.S. Forest Service near Pagosa Springs, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and the jail. She was a member of the National Nurses Association.

She is survived by her mother, Edna Graves of Durango; two aunts, Calla Mae Tyner of Durango and Linda Baird of Yelm, Wash.; and numerous cousins. Memorial contributions may be made in Ms. Graves’ name to a favorite charity.
