Ronald Thomas Hill

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church for Ronald Thomas Hill, a Fort Lewis College graduate, who died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in Bayfield. He was 57.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at services. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mr. Hill was born Feb. 2, 1944, in Mangum, Okla., and moved to Colorado as a young child. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed onboard the USS Massy. He attended CU Boulder, UNM Albuquerque and graduated from FLC with a degree in business administration and accounting. He moved to Bayfield in the early 1980s, and worked for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife, Leonette; his mother, Margaret Hill of Farmington; two brothers, Don Hill of Temecula, Calif., and Tracy Hill of Farmington; a sister, Beverly Grasmick of Rocky Ford, Colo.; and numerous nieces, aunts and uncles.

Sibyl Inez Smith

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bates-Cooper Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, Texas, for Sibyl Inez Barnard Smith, who died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 94.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Winfield Cemetery in Winfield, Texas.

Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 3, 1907, in Franklin County, Texas. She married Urban Stewart Smith on May 29, 1929.

She attended the Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas, and the University of Houston. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in teaching.

She taught in the Winfield Texas School District and was also a school principal there. She also taught in the Mount Pleasant Elementary School system. She retired in 1972.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Urban Stewart Smith.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha Ann Cain of Humble, Texas, and Mary Tisdel of Pearland, Texas; a son, James Stewart of Pagosa Springs; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Lawrence of Tyler, Texas; and a brother, M.J. Barnard of Mount Pleasant, Texas.

James Edward (Jim) Walker

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Allison Community Church for James Edward "Jim" Walker, a lifelong area resident, who died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, in Mancos. He was 89.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Jeff Finch will officiate. Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and burial will occur at the Allison-Tiffany Cemetery in Allison.

Mr. Walker was born July 20, 1912, in Arboles. He married Rachel Marie Lattin in 1933 in Denver.

Mr. Walker served as a postmaster in Arboles for 41 years and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 48 years.

He was a rancher and an auto and boat mechanic, and he ran a general store in Arboles.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Marie Walker.

He is survived by his daughter, Alice Brown of Durango; and two sons, Johnny Walker of Woodland Park, Colo., and Jimmy Walker of Englewood, Colo.

Edwin (Rusty) Valentine

A private family graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens in Aztec for Edwin "Rusty" Valentine, a Durango resident, who died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 77.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cremation occurred at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Mr. Valentine was born March 13, 1924, in Meeker, Colo. In March 1974, he married Elizabeth Hess, who died in August 1975.

He married Hazel Long in June 1977. Mr. Valentine served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a retired automobile mechanic and telephone lineman.

Mr. Valentine was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Valentine of Missouri Valley, Iowa; three daughters, Barbara Kugle of Bayfield, Maggie Valentine-Inskeep of Pagosa Springs and Becky Donatucci of Aspen, Colo.; a son, Mike Valentine of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and a brother, Joe Valentine of Grand Junction, Colo.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Rita Karlene Noland

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Rita Karlene Noland, a lifelong area resident, who died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, in Albuquerque, N.M., from emphysema. She was 64.

Mrs. Noland was born Jan. 30, 1937, in Cortez. She married James B. Noland in 1971 in Silverton.

Mrs. Noland attended Durango High School and Fort Lewis College. She worked as a librarian at the Durango Public Library and later for the Silverton school system. She lived in Albuquerque and at Electra Lake.

She enjoyed traveling and the arts, especially theater and music, and lived in various places throughout the Southwest.

Mrs. Noland is survived by her husband, Jim; her mother, Marguerite Albrecht of Durango; a sister, Bonnie Queen of Durango; two daughters, Robin Clifford and Carrie Meharg, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Teri Noland of San Diego, Calif.; two stepsons, Michael Noland of Key Largo, Fla., and Patrick Noland of Grand Junction, Colo.; a granddaughter; and five stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 216 Truman NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107.

Harmon Vaughn Holsey

Private memorial services will be held for Harmon Vaughn Holsey, a former Durango resident, who died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, in Tucson, Ariz., of cancer. He was 52.

Mr. Holsey was born Feb. 17, 1949. He married Cathy Holsey in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Holsey of Tucson, Ariz.; his mother, Patricia Holsey of Durango; and two sisters, Cynthia Yeager and Terry O’Karma, both of Durango.

Ben Sheley

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Christian Church of Cortez, 2306 E. Empire Street, for Ben Sheley who died Monday Oct. 29, 2001, in Tahlequah, Okla. He was 70 years old. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery, 27440 U. S. Highway 160. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Staley was born in Norton, Kan. April 20, 1931. He graduated from Central High School in Clifton in 1949. He joined the U. S. Air Force and served four years. While stationed at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Barksdale, La., he met and married Helen Hatcher.

The couple moved to Cortez in 1959. Mr. Sheley owned and ran ServiceMaster for many years. He was a member of the Cortez Christian Church and served as a deacon and elder. After retiring, the Sheleys joined a mobile missionary assistance program for three years. They recently joined Servants of our Savior and were preparing for a project in Oklahoma when Mr. Staley died.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Sheley of Cortez; two sons, Russell Sheley of Farmington, N.M., and Jeff Sheley of Cortez; two daughters, Karen Jennings of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Julie Harrington of Telluride; 23 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Fay Lanman, Arlene Holland, and Betty McConnell, all of the Grand Junction area; and two brothers, Don Sheley and Lyle Sheley, both of the Grand Junction area.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Sheley’s name to the First National Bank of Cortez, 140 W. Main, Cortez, 81321.

LoVisa Lindsey
Feb. 27, 1998

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for LoVisa Lindsey, who died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, in San Gabriel, Calif. She was 86.

The Rev. Jerry Boles will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Lindsey was born May 20, 1911, in Durango. She graduated from Durango High School, then attended and graduated from Stevens College in Missouri.

After college, Mrs. Lindsey returned to Durango and worked with her parents, John and Bessie McDevitt, who at the time owned the Durango Herald. After the family sold the newspaper, Mrs. Lindsey spent time working at the Strater, Fort Lewis College and for several years with her brother-in-law at the Colorado State Tax Office.

She and her husband, Ray Lindsey, moved to California in 1969, returning to Durango for visits.

Mrs. Lindsey was preceded in death by her husband in June 1987.

Survivors include her son, Richard Lindsey of Glendora, Calif.; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
