Troy Olen Triplett

Nov. 4, 1998

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds arena for Troy Olen Triplett, who died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at his home in Hesperus. He was 54.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Redmesa Cemetery.

Mr. Triplett was born March 23, 1944, in Walla Walla, Wash. His family moved to the Four Corners area when he was a young boy. He attended schools in Bayfield, Ignacio and Farmington. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

Mr. Triplett married Dale W. Penwell Aug. 29, 1970, in Durango.

Mr. Triplett was a rodeo cowboy for 28 years, riding saddle bronc and bulls. Since the early 1970s, he has coached high school rodeo clubs in which he had an impact on many young people.

Mr. Triplett managed the La Plata County Fairgrounds from 1974 to 1975. He was also a farrier, shoeing horses for many people in the area.

He received the Western Heritage Service Award in August.

Survivors include his wife, Dale Triplett of Hesperus; daughters, Tara Triplett of Las Cruces, N.M., and Lacey Triplett and Dawn Triplett, both of Hesperus; parents, Olen and Jennie Lee Triplett of Farmington, N.M.; brother, Duane Triplett of Waterflow, N.M.; sister, Jean Bixler of Farmington, N.M.; and one grandson.

Memorial donations may be made to the Troy Triplett Memorial Rodeo Scholarship Fund, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Drawer L, Durango, CO 81302.

The cause of death was not available.

Kevin Allen Moore

Dec. 17, 1998

Kevin Allen Moore of Stafford, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. He was 31.

Mr. Moore graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City in 1984, and was a member of the 1984 state championship football team. He attended Independence Community College in Independence, Kan., before attending the University of Arizona in Tucson and Fort Lewis College. Mr. Moore joined the United States Marine Corps on the first day of Desert Storm. He was the Honor Man of his recruiting class, and received two meritorious promotions while still a recruit.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research, 501 St. Jude’s Pl., Memphis, TN 38105. The cause of death was not available. An autopsy has been performed in Russia.

David Goff

Dec. 30, 1998

No services are planned for David Goff, who died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Arizona. He was 46.

Mr. Goff was born March 28, 1952. He grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School in 1970.

At the time of his death, Mr. Goff was living in Mayer, Ariz.

Survivors include his parents, Karle and Jeanne Goff of Mesa, Ariz.; son, Dave of Florida; sister, Karla Clark; nephew, Scott Aber and niece, Wendy Aber.

The cause of death was not available.

Larry G. Paxton

Dec. 31, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cortez First Baptist Church for Larry G. Paxton, who died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his home in Dolores after an extended illness. He was 61.

The Rev. Dan Rhodes will officiate. Burial will follow at Summit Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Paxton was born May 14, 1937, in Durango. He lived in Durango for 16 years, attending high school in Durango. On Dec. 5, 1953, he married Gerri Dora Brown in Gallup, N.M.

Mr. Paxton was a member of the Cortez Elks Lodge since 1972.

Survivors include his wife, Gerri of Dolores; daughters, Debra Majors of Salida, Colo., Connie Majors of Montrose, Colo., and Becky Dorr of Woodland Park, Colo.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Long of Aztec, N.M.; uncle, Ed Thompson of Durango and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to benefit Hospice of Montezuma, c/o the Dolores State Bank.

Orval Ray Shubert

Dec. 31, 1998

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Durango Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 507 for Orval Ray Shubert, a longtime resident of Durango and World War II veteran, who died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Durango. He was 73.

Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Shubert was born March 20, 1925, in Gove, Kansas, and served in England during World War II in a medical unit and as a prison guard. He worked as a plumber for 42 years and moved to Durango in 1969.

Mr. Shubert married his wife, Lois, on June 14, 1980, in Durango, and operated a tool sharpening shop for 15 years. A member of the V.F.W. Post No. 4031 and the Durango B.P.O.E. No. 507, he was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and playing pool.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Durango; two sons, David Shubert of San Antonio, Texas, and Steve Shubert of Bakersfield, Calif.; three step-daughters, Mardie Fletcher, of Cortez, JoAnne Shubert of Howard, Colo., and Wanda Davis of Moriarty, N.M.; three brothers, Chester and Carroll Shubert, both of Durango, and Raymond Shubert of Centerpoint, Texas; two sisters, Letha Evans, of Centerpoint, Texas, and Retha Daniels, of Palisade, Colo.; and many grand-children, great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO, 81301, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 931, Durango, CO, 81302.

Kelly Rex Green

Dec. 22, 1998

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hesperus Baptist Church for Kelly Rex Green, a longtime area resident who died Tuesday, Dec. 22, near Hesperus. He was 47.

There will be cremation.

Mr. Green was born Nov. 18, 1951 and grew up in Albuquerque. He was an iron worker throughout his life and also enjoyed mining. He owned a mine stake in La Plata Canyon.

Mr. Green had lived in the area for the past 10 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Athena Hott, of Pagosa Springs; two sons, Shane Green of Tulsa, Okla.. and Daniel Green of Stillwater, Okla.; sister, Terry McKay of Korea; uncle, Bob Delcamp of Cuba, N.M.; two aunts, Juanice Miller of Robert Lee, Texas, and Betty Green of Coleman, Texas; and four grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

James Franklin ‘Frank’ Kelley Sr.

Dec. 31, 1998

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Trujillo-Sheets Post 28 for James Franklin "Frank" Kelley Sr., who died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Durango. He was 79.

Mr. Kelley was born Oct. 22, 1919, in the Falfa area of Florida Mesa. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He owned and operated Verse’s Bar and Hotel in Durango.

Mr. Kelley farmed and ranched, and was a cowboy throughout his life running cattle in the Lemon Lake area. He loved horses and training. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, May Kelley of Durango; children DiAnn Hitchcox of Dallas, Texas, VeAnn Dillon of Durango, James F. Kelley Jr. of Pagosa Springs and Maurice Kelley of Westminster, Colo.; sister Violet Hitti of Durango; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango CO 81302.

Joyce Lou ‘Jo’ Taylor

Dec. 28, 1998

Services will be noon Saturday at the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Farmington, N.M., for Joyce Lou Taylor, who died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Allison. She was 52.

The Rev. Earl McQuitty will officiate. Burial will follow at the Covey Cemetery in Ignacio.

Mrs. Taylor was born July 24, 1946, in Seligman, Ariz. She had lived in this area since 1971.

She married Virgil Ray Taylor Dec. 27, 1965, in Reno, Nev.

Mrs. Taylor worked with her husband and daughter, Jolinda, writing and playing the ominicord as a gospel recording evangelist. They had made several CDs and cassette recordings of their music. Her faith was nondenominational.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil Ray Taylor, of Allison; son Virgil Ray Taylor Jr. of Farmington, N.M.; daughters Jackie Lou Rivas and Jolinda Taylor, both of Pagosa Springs; father Alton J. Covey of Ignacio; sisters Judy Lee Poulton and Jolene Hopper, both of Ignacio, and June Covey of Butte Falls, Ore.; brother Jimmy Covey of Ignacio; and five grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.
