Charles T. Spencer

Jan. 23, 1999

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Charles T. Spencer of Ignacio, who died Saturday, January 23, 1999, in Durango. He was 88.

Father Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary on Tuesday, January 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Interment will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio. An interment service will be provided by the American Legion.

Mr. Spencer was born on May 23, 1910 in Ignacio. He lived most of his life in Bayfield, where he was a farmer. Mr. Spencer served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Southern Ute Tribe.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Juanita Spencer, and his wife, Stephana Martinez. He is survived by a daughter, Lucy Olguin, of Ignacio; seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Walter Frank Smith

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery for Walter Frank Smith, a retired U.S. Army officer, who died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Durango. He was 79.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 17, 1920, in White River, S.D. He married Ruth Miller, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska. He lived in Arizona for 25 years, where he worked as a heavy duty welder. He retired in Durango in 1986. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda Willmett of Durango; two grandsons, and three granddaughters.

Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 1235 N. 4th, Grand Junction, CO 81501.

The cause of death was not available.

Cora Lee Johnson

Jan. 21, 1999

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bayfield Cemetery for Cora Lee Johnson, a former school teacher, who died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Durango. She was 93.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at services. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Bayfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 21, 1905, in Copeville, Texas. She married Jess T. Johnson, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Johnson worked as a school teacher, Eastern Star member and homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Johnson of Bayfield, Gene Johnson of Bayfield; four granddaughters, Kathy Soldevila of Durango, Michele Paimbouf of Dallas, Sharon Trigg of Colorado Springs, and Karen Dunivin of California; five grandsons, Mike Johnson of Montrose, Colo., Tracy Johnson of Texas, Curtis Johnson of Washington, D.C., Derrik Johnson of California and Leslie Ritchie of North Carolina; and, 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Phoebe Nell O’Donnell.

The cause of death was not available.

Warren Marvin Broman Sr.

Jan. 11, 1999

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church for Warren Marvin Broman Sr., who died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in McAllen, Texas. He was 81.

The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Broman was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Salina, Kan. He married Mary E. Hocker March 4, 1943, in Durango.

Mr. Broman served in the
Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was an accountant throughout his life, and was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge.

Mr. and Mrs. Broman retired to south Texas in later years and spent summers in Durango at Lemon Lake. They enjoyed round dancing together.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990.

Survivors include his son, Warren M. Broman Jr. of Durango, and one granddaughter.

Memorial donations may be made to the Educational Scholarship Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 260 E. 12th St., Durango, CO 81301.

The cause of death was not available.

Arthur Allen Wolff Sr.

Jan. 13, 1999

No services are planned for Arthur Allen Wolff Sr., who died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his home in Durango. He was 79.

There was cremation.

Mr. Wolff was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Pueblo, Colo. He moved to Durango in 1955.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Wolff of Durango; children, Joan Haga of Ignacio, Bonnie Carpenter of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Arthur A. Wolff Jr. of Romeo, Colo.; brother, Gerald Wolff of Pueblo, Colo.; sister, Bertha Crispi of Pueblo, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

Violet Frances Kolz

Jan. 16, 1999

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Violet Frances Kolz, who died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in Durango. She was 83.

The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery following cremation.

Mrs. Kolz was born Dec. 18, 1915, in Telluride. Her family resided in Rico before moving to Durango in the late 1920s.

She married Arvin Andrew Kolz. He preceded her in death in 1980.

Survivors include her son, Lawrence Kolz of Grand Junction; sister, Winifred Ford of Florida; brother, Jack Sadahiro of Durango and one grandson.

The cause of death was not available.

Gertrude Mary Fitts

Jan. 16, 1999

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for Gertrude Mary Fitts, who died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She was 78.

Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Rosary services will be 7 p.m. today at the church. The Revs. Joseph McGuinness and Thomas Munson will officiate.

Mrs. Fitts was born March 20, 1920, in Ignacio. She married Bernard Wayne Fitts in 1959 in Ignacio. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Fitts was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Jolene Rael, Ray Trujillo and Anthony Fitts, all of Cortez; Violet Montoya of Ignacio, Linda Fitts-Liberman of Colorado Springs and Israel Trujillo of Denver; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur Martinez of Pagosa Springs, Ross Martinez of Santa Maria, Calif., Christopher Martinez of Lancaster, Calif., Benny Martinez of California and Edward Martinez of Stockton, Calif.; and sisters, Sophie Sabata and Daisy Madrid, both of Phoenix, Ariz., Angie Gonzales of Broomfield, Calif., Nevis Austeb of Texas, Julia Rodriguez of Grand Junction, Molly Flaherty of Aztec, N.M., Marcia Martinez and Bertha Boble, both of Farmington, N.M., Genieve Lopez of Dolores, and Olive Garcia of Sacramento, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Fitts’ name at the Citizens State Bank of Cortez.

Patricia Jane Schuessler

Jan. 5, 1999

Memorial services were held Jan. 8 at Kutis Memorial Chapel in St. Louis, Mo., for Patricia Jane Schuessler, who died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, in St. Louis after a long struggle with poor health. She was 60.

Burial will follow at a later date at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango, where her parents, Russell and Delia Pride, are buried.

Mrs. Schuessler was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Tulsa, Okla. After several moves around the country during World War II, the family settled in Wichita, Kan., where she graduated from East High School in 1958. She then attended Wichita University where she met and married Everett F. Andrews in 1963.

Mrs. Schuessler moved to Colorado with her husband, eventually settling in Durango in 1970 where they started a photography business.

After divorcing in 1979, she was remarried to Robert M. Schuessler in 1981. They moved to California then St. Louis.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; daughter, Gretchen D. Fick; and one grandson.
