James S. Wernet
March 29, 1943 - April 25, 2003
HOTCHKISS - Sunbeam, Colorado resident, James Stanley Wernet, died Friday, April 25, 2003 at his daughter’s residence in Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was 60.
A memorial service for Mr. Wernet is planned for 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 2, 2003 at the Maybell Church in Maybell, Colorado.
James Stanley Wernet was born on March 29, 1943 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to James B. and Vera A. (Brown) Wernet. He spent his childhood in Denver and graduated from South High School in 1961. He resided in Denver until 1976, when he moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He then moved to Craig, Colorado in 1981 and remained there until moving to the Mabel/Sunbeam, Colorado area in 1993.
Among his many interests, he most enjoyed cars, antiques and restoring automobiles.
James is survived by his son, Travis Wernet of Emeryville, CA; his daughter, Lisa Wernet of Hotchkiss, CO; his mother, Vera Myers of Littleton, CO; a brother, Jack Wernet and his wife Donna of Grand Junction, CO; a sister, Barbara Leigh and her husband Lowell of Denver, CO; his former wife, Beverly Wernet of Conifer, CO; and one grandchild.
James was preceded in death by his father, James B. Wernet.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Gene “Snuffy” Smith
February 2, 1937 - April 18, 2003
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Gene “Snuffy” Smith, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at his residence. He was 66.
Condolence calls may be made on Wednesday, April 23, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Smith residence, 780 “A” Street, Delta.
Norman Gene Smith was born on February 2, 1937 in Shaddock, Oklahoma to the late Burton M. and Nellie (Helm) Smith. He spent his childhood in Oklahoma and Canon City, Colorado. He graduated high school in Canon City.
Gene married Mary Lou Patterson on June 22, 1968 in Gunnison, Colorado. She survives.
A parts salesman for Hinton Auto Parts for 29 years, Gene retired in 2002. He had been a resident of Delta for 35 years and was a longtime active member of the Delta Lions Club, where he held many offices. He also was an aide at the Delta - Montrose Vocational Center for the diesel mechanics class for several years. Gene enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing and animals.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Gene’s life include his wife, Mary Lou Smith of Delta; a brother, Alvin Smith of Fremont, CA; a sister - in - law, Ann E. and her husband Bill Wegert of Gunnison, CO; three nephews, Kevin Smith of Canon City, CO, Daniel Smith of California and Jess Wegert of Gunnison, CO; and a niece, Becky Wegert of Gunnison.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Smith.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Delta Lions Club, P.O. Box 765, Delta, CO 81416.

Clyde C. Perry
April 26, 1926 - April 12, 2003
HOTCHKISS - Clyde C. Perry, a resident of Hotchkiss, Colorado, died on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at his residence. He had been in failing health for several years. Clyde was 76.
Memorial services for Clyde will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Ministers John Wilson and Errol McDonald will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Delta City Cemetery.
Clyde Chester Perry was born on April 26, 1926, at Valdez, Colorado, the son of Chester Brack and Frances Lucille (Boyd) Perry. He grew up in communities in Colorado and Utah, graduating from Delta High School in 1944. He then enlisted and served in the Navy until the end of World War II.
Clyde received a degree in chemistry from the University of Denver. He spent 30 years as a chemist and supervisor at the Rocky Flats nuclear facility.
Upon the death of his father in 1963, he assisted his mother with her affairs while continuing his work at Rocky Flats. He moved to the family farm at Cory, Colorado, in 1993. From 1996 he lived on his farm on Rogers Mesa.
During his lifetime, Clyde enjoyed a number of hobbies. He was a licensed pilot, built model airplanes, and engaged in hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a sister, LaRue Benesh and her husband Gordon of Lakewood, CO; niece, Tamara Sue Mott and her husband Allen of Livonia, MI; nephew, Mark Benesh of Lakewood, CO; and his beloved grandniece and nephew, Erin and Ryan Mott.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to: Hotchkiss Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 455, Hotchkiss, Colorado 81419.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Marrion W. Crim
September 13, 1926 - April 24, 2003
DELTA - Delta resident, Marrion Willis Crim died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at his home. He was 76.
A private graveside service was held at the Delta City Cemetery in Delta.
Marrion Willis Crim was born on September 13, 1926 in Delta, Colorado to the late Lemmie Daniel and Julia Amanda (Shipley) Crim. He spent his childhood in Delta and attended school there.
Marrion was a retired oiler, having worked for Lockheed - Martin. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a past member of the Delta Volunteer Fire Department. Among his many interests, he most enjoyed doing yard work and gardening. He especially enjoyed raising tomatoes.
Survivors include one sister, Charlotte Volgamore of Mt. Ranch, CA; four brothers, John Crim and wife Helen of Ouray, CO; Ralph Crim of Atwood, KS; Ray Crim and wife Carol of Minden, NV; and Art Crim of Hotchkiss, CO; Marrion is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by and infant brother and sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Robert D. Hogge
February 9, 1912 - April 28, 2003
GRAND JUNCTION - Lifelong resident of Western Colorado, Robert D. Hogge, died Monday, April 28, 2003 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Grand Junction. He was 91.
A graveside memorial service for Mr. Hogge is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3rd at the Delta City Cemetery in Delta.
Robert D. Hogge was born on February 9, 1912 in Dillon, Montana to the late David Thomas and Susan (Duncan) Hogge. He spent his childhood in Rifle, Colorado and graduated from high school there in 1930. He continued his education at Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction.
Robert was the meat market manager for Safeway in Grand Junction and Monte Vista. He retired from Albertson’s in Grand Junction in 1976. Robert loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. His other interests included gardening, traveling and golfing.
Robert married Kathryn A. Artt in October of 1943 in Carson City, Nevada. Kathryn passed away on November 27, 2002 at Grand Junction.
Survivor’s include four sons, Robert Moynihan of Oneanta, NY; Thomas W. Hogge and his wife Linda of Layton, Utah; Walter D. Hogge and his wife Patricia of Mililani, Hawaii; Jim Hogge and his wife Kathy of Grand Junction; two sisters: Bernice Collier of Grand Junction and Mildred Wagaman of Ft. Collins; and a brother Dave Hogge of Rifle, CO.
Robert is further survived by eight grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Walter Hogge and a granddaughter, Carey Berg.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Betty Louise Schmaltz
January 19, 1936 - May 16, 2003
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Betty Louise Schmaltz, died Friday, May 16, 2003 at her residence. She was 67.
A visitation for family and friends is planned for Wednesday, May 21st from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service in Delta. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m., at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22nd at St. Michael’s in Delta. Rev. Mark Bettinger will preside. Rite of Commital will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.
Betty Louise Grover was born on January 19, 1936, in Ashland, Kansas to the late Lewis D. and Jewel Iva (Anthony) Grover. She spent her childhood in Protection, Kansas and then moved to Delta, where she graduated from high school in 1954.
On November 25, 1954, in Delta, she married Edward A. Schmaltz. He preceded her in death on October 21, 1965 in Denver, Colorado.
Betty retired in 1992 after having worked as a bookkeeper for 14 years at Arrow Gas Company in Delta. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. She enjoyed camping, fishing, crocheting and the mountains. Her true love however, was her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivor’s blessed to have shared in Betty’s life include her three daughters: Jackie Timbreza and husband John of Delta, Cindy Sanchez and husband Ben of Olathe, CO and Bonnie
Baier and husband George of Delta; one son, Michael Schmaltz and wife Dennise of Anchorage, AK; and one sister, June Hubbard, of Sumner, WA; thirteen grandchildren: Billy and Sean Timbreza, Margie Garcia, Michael Schmaltz, Troy and Tyler Rogers, Anthony and Marline Sanchez, Elizabeth, George, Christa, Lucas and Amy Baier. Betty is further survived by eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her husband Edward, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alene Lacy and Lolene Calloway, and two brothers, Eugene and Bud Grover.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, C/O Fredrica Morris, 1451 Hwy 65, Eckert, CO 81418.

Cynthia A. Marshall
September 8, 1956 - August 3, 2003
DELTA - Longtime Delta County resident, Cynthia A. Marshall, died on Sunday, August 3, 2003, at her residence. She was 46.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August, 9, 2003, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado. Father Mark Bettinger will officiate. Services will conclude at the Chapel.
Cynthia Ann Marshall was born on September 8, 1956, to Wallace Bruce and Clarine (Niccoli) Marshall in Denver, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Denver and attended schools there. She had been a resident of the Delta area for the past twenty - four years.
Cindi was an avid horse and dog lover. She belonged to the Paint Horse Association. Cindi also enjoyed fishing, hunting, rodeos and painting. Her passion was taking pictures, and she was a gifted photographer.
Those grateful to have shared in Cindi’s life include her son, Dustin Toothaker of Cedaredge; her mother, Clarine Marshall of Delta; a brother, Bob Marshall of Mauii, HI; three sisters: Jacque Sego of Delta, Paulette Hamilton and her husband Bob of Gardner, CO, and Kitty Maupin and husband Ron of Strasburg, CO; her dear companion, Jim Smith of Delta. She is further survived by a granddaughter, Shalynn Toothaker of Limon, CO.
Cindi was preceded in death by her father, Bruce Marshall on October 23, 1999.
Memorial contributions may be made in Cindi’s memory to the Shalynn Toothaker Education Fund, c/o Community First National Bank, 402 Main St., Delta, CO 81416.

Schalastica “Alice” Rule
April 20, 1946 - August 6, 2003
CEDAREDGE - Lifelong Delta County resident, Schalastica “Alice” Rule, died on Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 57.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. August 7, 2003, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta Colorado. Funeral services for Alice will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 8, 2003, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta, Colorado. Father Mark Bettinger will officiate. Interment will follow at Olathe Cemetery, Olathe, Colorado.
Schalastica “Alice” Laboto was born on April 20, 1946, to John and Beatrice (Valdez) Laboto in Olathe, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Delta and graduated from Delta High School.
On December 30, 1989, Alice married Roger D. Rule at the Church of God in Delta, Colorado. He survives. They lived in Delta until nine years ago, when they moved to Cedaredge.
Alice worked at High Quality Packing in Delta as a sorter. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. Some of Alice’s interests included reading and fishing.
Those grateful to have been a part of Alice’s life include her husband, Roger Rule of Cedaredge; her mother, Beatrice Archuleta of Delta; a son, Cory Mason and wife Melinda of Delta; one daughter, Sheila Suckow and husband Harp of Delta; two brothers: Joe Archuleta, and Robert Valdez and wife Hattie both of Delta. She is further survived by six grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her father, John Laboto; and her first husband, James Mason.

Clifton D. Harding
December 18, 1928 - July 31. 2003
PAONIA – Clifton D. Harding, a resident of Paonia, Colorado, died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Peculiar, Missouri. He was 74.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday August 3, 2003 at Taylor Funeral Service in Delta CO. Funeral services for Mr. Harding will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 4, 2003, at the Paonia Christian Fellowship Church in Paonia, Colorado, with James Gall and Larry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.
Clifton D. Harding and his twin brother, Clayton Harding, were born on December 18, 1928, to Walter M. and Gertrude E. (Frye) Harding at Bowie, Colorado. He spent his early childhood at Bowie until 1936, when he moved to Ft. Lupton, Colorado, and graduated from High School there. He moved to Brighton, Colorado, in 1949 where he worked for Public Service Company. In 1969, he moved to Platteville, Colorado, where he worked for the Nucleur Plant until his retirement in 1991. Clifton then moved to Paonia and became a llama rancher.
Clifton belonged to the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge, the National Riflemans Assoc, Rocky Mountain Llama and Alpaca Assoc., All Terrain Vehicle Assoc., Wildlife Forever Assoc., and the National Wildlife Federation. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed growing roses.
Those grateful to have been a part of Clifton’s life include a son, Justin Harding of Peculiar, MO; three daughters: Michelle Husnick of Broomfield, CO, Susan Harding Skaer of Estes Park, CO, and Merry Blair of Broomfield, CO; three sisters: Wilda Bruce of Montrose, CO, Helen Alcott of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Bette Eskelson of Phoenix, AZ. He is further survived by a special friend, Rosie Zeschin of Platteville, CO; eleven grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
Mr. Harding was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Clayton Harding, who died at fifteen months of age; and his daughter, Terry Harding, who died in 1986.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Fredrica Morris, 1451 Hwy 65, Eckert, CO 81418; or to the Rocky Mountain Llama & Alpaca Assoc. in care of Larry Lewellyn, 2805 West Oakland Dr. Sedalia, CO 80135.

William Roe Hall
August 6, 1937 - July 31, 2003
CRAWFORD - William R. Hall, a Crawford resident, died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at his residence. He was 65.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday evening, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Funeral services for William will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 4, 2003, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss with Pastor Gaylen Kinser officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories in Crawford, Colorado.
William Roe Hall was born on August 6, 1937 to Bennie and Nora (Davis) Hall in Carter County, Kentucky. He spent his childhood in Kentucky and Ohio. William received his education in Ohio.
William was a beekeeper; he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and bowling.
William was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manteca, CA.
Those grateful to have shared in William’s life include two sons: Bill Whisman and his wife Kim of Nampa, ID, and Richard Hall and his wife Sharlene of Owen, WI; two daughters: Windi Gilliland and her husband Nate of Crawford, CO and Sue Morrison and her husband Dennis of Modesto, CA; one brother, Jake Hall of his wife Wanda of Wasta, S.D., four sisters: Georgia Parker of Portsmouth, OH, Susie Hall of Brodhead, WI, and Diane Meyers of Stockton, CA. He is further survived by ten grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made in William’s memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.
