Joe Ann "Jody" Royce

No services are planned for Joe Ann Royce, who died April 15, 1999, after an extended illness.

She was raised in the Cortez area, where she graduated from the Cortez High School.

After moving to Durango, she worked for La Plata Electric Association until she retired in 1988 as administrative manager.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Casey Royce, in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Terry E. O’Brien of Durango; and a sister, Mary E. Roberts of Durango.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patrick W. Luter Cancer Center, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81302.

Edward R. Dvorak

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Mountain View Mortuary Chapel in Colorado Springs for Edward R. Dvorak, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, who died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. He was 78.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Dvorak was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Allison and graduated from Durango High School. He served as an officer with the U.S. Air Force Weather Service. He had lived in Colorado Springs since 1971.

Survivors include a sister, Anne Dederick; two brothers, Otto and George Dvorak, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver.

Henry W. Love

A memorial service was held April 2 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Kingman, Ariz., for Henry W. Love, who died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Kingman, Ariz. He was 80.

Burial was in West Virginia.

Mr. Love was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Craigsville, W.Va. He and his wife, Winnie, moved to Durango shortly after World War II.

Mr. Love was a bank teller at the First National Bank and later at Burns National Bank. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and competitive rifle shooting. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and member of the Durango Gun Club and the Hualapai, Ariz., Gun Club.

Mr. Love was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of a Marine gun crew assigned to a cruiser that was in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The cruiser was the first American warship to clear the harbor and was credited with sinking a Japanese submarine. He served on Guadalcanal and in other Pacific Island battles during the war.

The Loves retired to Vallecito Lake for several years before moving to Arizona.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Joseph A. Love of Richwood, W.Va.; three brothers, Donald Love of Craigsville, W.Va., Gerald Love of Baltimore, Md., and Emery Love of Clearfield, Utah; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frank F. Kasal

Frank F. Kasal died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at his home in Las Cruces, N.M. He was 85.

There was cremation. A gathering of family and friends will be held the last week of June at the Florida Campgrounds.

Mr. Kasal was born Feb. 24, 1913, in Crete, Neb. He was a longtime resident of Durango, where he owned and operated Kasal and Fernando Auto Repair until his retirement.

Mr. Kasal was a member of the National Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Armstrong Kasal of Las Cruces, N.M.; three daughters, Vickie Dosenbach of Florissant, Mo., Kathleen "Kitty" Tavenner of Tucson, Ariz., and Lois Kasal of Las Cruces, N.M.; a sister, Faith Visage of Paso Robles, Calif.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

Florence Margaret Chapman

Private funeral services will be held for Florence Margaret Chapman, who died Saturday, April 10 in Cortez. She was 95.

Mrs. Chapman was born Dec. 5, 1903, in Waldron, Ill. She married Colton H. Chapman in 1924 in Kankakee, Ill.

The couple moved to Pagosa Springs a few years later. Ten years later, in 1938, they moved to Durango.

Mrs. Chapman was a professional pianist.

Following her husband’s death on Oct. 13, 1978, the city of Durango changed the name of Durango’s ski area from Calico Hill to Chapman Hill. Mr. Chapman was the initial volunteer to operate and develop the ski area.

Mrs. Chapman was also preceded in death by a son, Walter Chapman, in 1966.

Survivors include her son, Robert Chapman of Durango; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chapman Hill Improvement Association Inc., c/o Durango Parks and Recreation, 949 East Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

The funeral services will be private. The cause of death was not available.

Jessie Lorene Strnad

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Jessie Strnad, a longtime Four Corners resident who died April 8, 1999. She was 94.

The Rev. Curt Alderton will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Strnad was born December 3, 1904 in Chester, Neb. and married George Strnad on June 27, 1922, at Fairbury, Neb. They moved to the Four Corners in 1936.

Mrs. Strnad was a sales clerk and worked at the S&H Green Stamp department at Graden’s, and also at Durango Paint Company.

She loved children and enjoyed reading, singing and flower gardening. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and had served as past worthy matron, was active in the Toastmistresses and was a member of the Ignacio Community Church and the Friendship Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 5, 1966.

She is survived by a son, Early Strnad of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a daughter, Phyllis Young of Ignacio; a brother, Max Hudson of Munden, Kan.; three children; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ignacio Community Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 317, Ignacio, CO 81137.

Marguerite N. Phelps

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Marguerite N. Phelps, who died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Durango. She was 79.

Mrs. Phelps was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Manchester, England. She served in the British Women’s Land Army during World War II, where she met Roger Lewis Phelps, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England. They were married in 1944 in England.

In 1945, Mrs. Phelps came to the United States with her husband. She was a volunteer throughout her life with the American Red Cross, doing work internationally and in New York and California.

Mrs. Phelps lived in San Bernardino, Calif., from 1968 to 1991. Following her husband’s death in 1990, she moved to Durango to be near family. She returned to California in 1994 and resided in the San Diego area until recently returning to Durango. While in Durango, Mrs. Phelps volunteered at the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Shop.

Survivors include four children, Peter Phelps of La Mesa, Calif., Duncan Phelps and Caroline Mosiman, both of Durango, and Chris Phelps of San Bernardino, Calif.; a sister, Babs Clayton of England; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1777, Durango, Co. 81302, or to your local animal shelter.
