Gail E. Thompson

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Sugarcreek, Ohio, for the Rev. Gail E. Thompson, a former resident of Durango who died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at Walnut Creek, Ohio, after an extended illness. He was 88.

Ministers Eli Miller, Luke Stutzman and the Rev. Jim Mason will officiate, with burial to follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Sugarcreek. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson was born May 26, 1911, in Durango. He was a retired minister in the Bible Missionary Church of Durango.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella F. Brewer, on Feb. 10, 1998.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Dunn of Stebbins, Alaska, and Shirley King of Summerfield, Ohio; a son, Keith Thompson of Dundee, Ohio; a brother, Albert Thompson of Brush, Colo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Perry

A memorial service will be announced at a later date for Mary Perry, who died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 96.

The cause of death was not available.

Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Perry was born Sept. 3, 1903. She lived in Durango from 1925 until 1995.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1957. He owned the cleaning plant on Second Avenue.

Survivors include two daughters, Elaine P. Gedanic of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ethel Livingston of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Joe Perry of Yorba Linda, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert Lee Loos

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Robert Lee Loos, a former Ignacio football and track coach, who died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in Durango. He was 54. The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Loos was born Sept. 8, 1945, in Duncan, Okla., before moving to Durango. He was a 1963 Durango High School graduate and, in 1969, graduated from Fort Lewis College.

From 1973 to 1986, he taught school in Ignacio, where he was chosen teacher of the year in 1987. Mr. Loos was a county delegate to the state political assembly in 1978 and served as president of the Colorado chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1983. He was also chosen to serve on the Fort Lewis College Alumni Board of Directors in 1984.

He is survived by his parents, DeLasso and Billie Nell Loos of Durango; a daughter, Sonya Meador of Hesperus; a son, Justin Loos of Durango; two brothers, Phillip Loos of Colorado Springs, and Richard Loos of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Anita Zellitti of Durango, and Kim Rayburn of Odem, Texas; two grandchildren, Kaylynne Loos of Durango, and Lacey Jo Meador of Hesperus.

Contributions may be made to the Southwest Colorado Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 2717, Durango, CO 81302 or to the Robert Lee Loos Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St., Durango, CO 81301.

Ellen L. Britton

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church in Cortez for Ellen L. Britton, a former Durango resident, who died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Community Hospital in Grand Junction. She was 87.

The Rev. Brad Ramsey will officiate at services. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Britton was born July 19, 1912, in Pattonsburg, Mo. She married Clarence C. Britton on April 16, 1930, in Kim, Colo.

She was an avid quilter who made quilts for her children and grandchildren, and was active with the Cortez Senior Center before moving to Grand Junction.

Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by three sons, Clifford Britton of Grand Junction, Philip Britton of Raymond, Alberta, Canada, and Larry Britton of Cortez; three daughters, Hazel Stratton of Grand Junction, Nora Like of Folsom, N.M., and Lois Rogers of Osborn, Mo.; a brother, Lyman Waters of Dolores; a sister, Emma Kinkade of Dolores; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Britton’s name at the Cortez Senior Center, c/o Cortez Nutrition Program, 103 N. Chestnut St., Cortez, CO 81321.

M. Edward ‘Eddie’ Gedney

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec, N.M., for M. Edward "Eddie" Gedney, of Aztec, who died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. He was 68.

The cause of death was not available.

The Rev. Bob Hackett will officiate. Burial will be at the Aztec Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Cope Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Gedney was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Durango. He was raised and educated in Durango. He moved to Aztec, N.M., in 1953 and was in business with his brother, Homer Gedney Jr., for several years.

In 1962, Mr. Gedney began a business, "Eddie’s Radio and TV Service," and worked there until retiring in 1996.

Mr. Gedney was a member of the Swinging Seniors Band, attended the Aztec Senior Citizens Center, and was a member of the Aztec Lions Club since 1955, where he was a past president and the current secretary/treasurer.

Survivors include his brother, Homer Gedney, of Mobridge, S.D.; three aunts, Margaret Moore, of Farmington, N.M., Ruby Schoser, of Durango and Marjorie Gedney, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; two nephews; and his companion, Lucy Lee of Aztec, N.M.

Evelyn Marie Yeaw

Evelyn Marie Yeaw died of heart failure Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in Durango. She was 85.

Mrs. Yeaw was born April 13, 1914, in Orland Park, Ill. She lived in Harvey, Ill., where she attended and graduated from Thornton Township High School in 1932.

Mrs. Yeaw was a homemaker. She was very actively involved in the 55 Plus Center in Durango for more than 20 years. She was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Arnold H. Weisbrodt and William J. Yeaw.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick Yeaw of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Richard Weisbrodt of Lebanon, Ore.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

No services are planned, and cremation has taken place per Mrs. Yeaw’s wishes.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, La Plata County Heart Fund, P.O. Box 1777, Durango, CO 81302.

Victor R. Menaldino

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Elks Lodge for Victor R. Menaldino, who died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Tucson, Ariz. He was 69.

The cause of death was not available.

Interment will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Interment and committal services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Mike McCleary officiating.

Mr. Menaldino was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Philadelphia. He spent most of his life in Durango.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years.

Mr. Menaldino was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church. He was a member of the Durango B.P.O. Elks Lodge 507 for many years and was Elk of the Year in 1988.

Mr. Menaldino is survived by five children.

Edumencio 'Ed' Romero

A recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Edumencio "Ed" Romero of Ignacio, a longtime employee of the Durango & Rio Grande Railroad who died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999. He was 89.

The cause of death was not available.

Father Eddy Andary will officiate. Mass will be said Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, with burial at Crestview Cemetery.

Mr. Romero was born June 27, 1910, in Los Pinos, N.M.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, wrestling, baseball, boxing and being a grandfather

He was preceded in death by two wives, Rose Herrera Romero and Mary Sandoval Romero.

He is survived by a son, Carlos Romero of Ignacio; two daughters, Sue Alston of Ignacio, and Mary H. Silva of Kirtland, N.M.; stepdaughter, Dolores Rivas of Denver; eight grandchildren, Mike Alston of Durango, Kim Alston of San Diego, Calif., Roseann Silva of Durango, Rhonda Silva of Farmington, Renee Davis of Farmington, Robert Rivas of Denver, Janet Rivas of Denver, Eddie Rivas Jr. of Denver; 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Cecilia Trujillo of East Corboun, Utah, Petra Mullenix of Ignacio, Dora Gutierrez of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Mary Valencia of Roswell, N.M.; and a brother, Henry Martinez of Farmington.
