Robert B. Douglas

A memorial wake will be 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Elks Lounge for Robert "Bob" Douglas, who died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, in Durango. He was 56.

The cause of death was not available.

Family and friends will officiate at the wake.

Mr. Douglas was born Jan. 12, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. He served in the Army and was a longtime resident of Durango. He worked for Dry Creek Electrical as an electrician. He also worked for the Sheriff’s Office.

He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and loved animals.

He is survived by two sisters, Donna J. Douglas of Los Angeles, Calif., and Christine M. Oliver of Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carla Marie (Halverson) Verce

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Church for Carla Marie (Halverson) Verce, who died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in Durango. She was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Verce was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Durango and was a fourth generation, lifelong resident. Her great-grandfather, Dan Pargin, moved to the Piedra River Valley in 1876 and started the family ranch which is still operating as a working cattle ranch.

Mrs. Verce attended the University of New Mexico and was a charter member of the local Humane Society and a long-time volunteer. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She loved to garden and spent many hours with her flowers and vegetables and passed on the joy of gardening to her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Joe J. Verce; two sons, Jim and Mike and two grandsons, Martin and Landon, all of Durango; and a brother, Harold Halverson of Chimney Rock.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society.

Allen Hofferber

Allen Hofferber died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home in Pagosa Springs. He was 73.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Hofferber was born in San Diego and raised in the Los Angeles area. He graduated from the University of Southern California on the GI bill, after having served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Hofferber began practicing dentistry in Torrance, Calif., in 1954. He and his wife, Barbara, married July 6, 1954. They raised their children in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., until moving to Hemet, Calif., in 1971. At retirement in 1988, they moved to Vista, Calif. They purchased a home in Pagosa Springs in 1998 and settled there.

Mr. Hofferber enjoyed drawing and painting.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two sons, Scott of Loma Linda/Redlands, Calif., and Gary of Richland, Wash.; a daughter, Lisa Hudson of Harrison, Ark., and eight grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Andrew R. Medina Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Andrew R. Medina Sr., who died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Durango. He was 42.

The death was accidental.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at La Posta Cemetery. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at the church.

Mr. Medina was born July 12, 1957, in Durango. He was a carpenter and furnace technician with Southwest Community Resources for 20 years.

Mr. Medina liked hunting, fishing, watching football and outdoor activities.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Medina of Durango; a daughter, Jennifer Medina of Durango; two sons, Andrew Medina and Adrian Medina, both of Durango; his mother, Cordy Medina of Durango; two brothers, Rick Medina and Lawrence Medina, both of Durango; and two grandchildren.

William Franklin 'Papa' Martin, Jr.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at the Church of Christ on Florida Mesa, for William Franklin "Papa" Martin, Jr., a longtime resident of the Durango area who died Sept. 16, 1999, in Durango. He was 72.

The cause of death was not available.

Gray Fields will officiate, with burial at Pine River Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Martin was born Feb. 20, 1927, in Erick, Okla. He married Alma Joyce Holt on Sept. 10, 1946, at Dallas, Texas, and moved to the Durango area in 1974. He was a welder at Telluride Iron Works.

Mr. Martin was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Joyce Martin of Bayfield; son, Delbert Martin of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Rita Hendricks of Bayfield and Debbie Martin of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Alta Walker, Effie Montgomery and Billie Laman, all of Artesia, N.M.; two brothers, Willie Martin of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jimmie Martin of Artesia, N.M.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the W.F. Martin Memorial Fund, c/o Pine River Valley National Bank, 301 N. Commerce, Bayfield, CO 81122.

Gene T. Trujillo

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Assembly of God Church for Gene T. Trujillo, who died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. He was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Raymond Mestas and the Rev. David Garza will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Trujillo was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Santa Fe, N.M. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the Latin American Bible College in La Puente, Calif.

Mr. Trujillo married Eileen Valdez on Jan. 18, 1953, in Espanola, N.M.

Mr. Trujillo was a retired minister of the Spanish Assembly of God Church of Durango. He was a pastor of many churches, including Antonito and Center, Colo., Carlsbad, N.M., and Burley, Idaho. He was a member of the Spanish Assembly of God Church in Durango.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Lucero.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Trujillo of Durango; a son, Kenneth I. Trujillo of Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters, Yolanda Manus and Selena M. Trujillo, both of Durango, and Jean Trujillo of Taos, N.M.; and seven brothers and sisters.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rev. Gene T. Trujillo Memorial Fund, The Philadelphia Foundation, Attn: Heather Gee, 1234 Market St., Suite 1800, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Kenneth James Perry

Private memorial services are being held for Kenneth James Perry, a Vietnam War veteran who died Sept. 9, 1999, at his home in Durango after suffering from a lengthy illness. He was 49.

Mr. Perry was born Sept. 13, 1949, in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from high school in Oceanside, Calif., and then served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He moved to Durango in 1974 and was self employed for the past 24 years.

He enjoyed time spent in the outdoors and mountains.

He is survived by a daughter, Leah M. Perry of Durango; two sons, Paul J. Perry and Keith J. Perry, both of Durango; mother, Pauline Perry of Oceanside, Calif.; sister, Charlene Gamel of Napa, Idaho; and his ex-wife, Gail Perry of Durango.

Lucretia Ruth Hose

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont for Lucretia Ruth Hose, who died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver of complications after a lengthy battle with multiple sclerosis. She was 59.

There was cremation.

Mrs. Hose was born Oct. 22, 1939, in Denver. The family lived on a farm north of Brighton. She married Wayne Hose on June 7, 1959, and moved to Denver.

Mrs. Hose worked for Public Service Co. and Safeway. After living in Denver for several years she moved to Montrose, where she and her husband owned and operated a dry cleaning business. They were also partners in a manufacturing business. They moved to Durango in 1986, where Mrs. Hose lived until she recently moved back to Denver.

Survivors include two sons, Kurt Hose of Thornton, Colo., and Scott Hose of Durango; one grandson, Wayne Austin Hose of Thornton, Colo.; her mother, Lorene Burris of Riverton, Wyo.; and her brother, LeRoy Delventhal of Riverton, Wyo.

Memorial donations may be made to the MS Society, c/o Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street, Longmont, CO 80501.

Maria Emilia "Emily" Benavidez

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango for Maria Emilia "Emily" Benavidez, who was shot to death Sept. 7 in Durango. She was 54.

Father Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate, with burial to follow at Greenmount Cemetery. A rosary will be said Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Benavidez was born Oct. 18, 1944, in Monero, N.M. She worked at Fort Lewis College and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Benavidez of Durango; son, Clint Benavidez of Ignacio; brother, Gene Ramirez of Durango; two sisters, Raphaela Valencia of Blanco, N.M., and Alice Salazar of Salt Lake City; and grandchildren Troy, Brianna, Haley, James, Maria, Angela and Vayola.
