Jerry L. Shelhamer

Jerry L. Shelhamer died of heart failure Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Willamette Falls Hospital in Canby, Ore. He was 83.

Mr. Shelhamer was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Ignacio. He married LaVerne McMasters on April 20, 1961, in Aztec, N.M. They moved to Canby, Ore., in 1985.

Mr. Shelhamer was a rancher in his early years and ended his career as a supervisor for Southern Union Gas Co., retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne, of Canby; a daughter, Calleen Anderson, of Farmington, N.M.; a son, Paul Shelhamer, of Brownfield, Texas; a stepdaughter, Nancy Funk, of Molalla, Ore.; a stepson, Dee McInturff of Etiwaunda, Calif.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Committal services were held at Zion Memorial Cemetery with a memorial service following at the First Baptist Church on Nov. 10.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church in Canby, c/o Canby Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 1148, Canby, OR 97013-1148.

Peggy Bloomer

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel in Midland, Texas, for Peggy Bloomer, who died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Durango. She was 72.

The cause of death was not available.

Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bloomer was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Brady, Texas. She graduated from Brady High School. In 1946, she married Herbert L. Bloomer.

Mrs. Bloomer was employed with Superior Oil Co. for many years. She was a member of the Hughes Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Bloomer.

Survivors include her son, J. Kelly Bloomer of Durango; her daughter, Kaye Mead of Irving, Texas; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ilene Susan Clark

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bayfield for Ilene Susan Clark, who died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Tucson, Ariz. She was 58.

The cause of death was not known.

Bishop Kent Hoffman will officiate at services. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery.

Mrs. Clark was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Alhambra, Calif. She married Carl Clark on Aug. 20, 1961, in Temple City, Calif.

The two moved to Bayfield, where Mrs. Clark was a bookkeeper and president of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was also a Sunday school teacher at the church, as well as an avid gardener and hiker.

Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband; her parents, Clare and Esma Buckeridge of Temple City, Calif.; two daughters, Laurie Renick of Bayfield, and Kimberly Sharp of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Ted Buckeridge of Irvine, Calif., and Dale Buckeridge of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

James Lloyd ‘Jim’ Box Sr.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for James Lloyd "Jim" Box Sr., a champion Indian dancer, who died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Durango. He was 49.

The cause of death was not available.

The Rev. Doug Hunt will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, followed by a wake at the church.

A sunrise service will be at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. A lunch at the Ignacio Senior Citizens Center will follow the service.

Mr. Box was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Durango. He was a lifelong resident of Ignacio.

Mr. Box traveled to Germany with his father and mother, Edward Bent Box Sr. and Dorothy Box, to spread Indian culture and awareness in the late 1960s. He traveled with the Native American Theater Ensemble across North America in the early 1970s, in which he was a traditional Indian actor.

Mr. Box had been a champion fancy dancer since his teen-age years. He played the flute and was a member of "The Centurymen." He was known for his years as a Sundancer with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Regina Liz Snipe Box.

Survivors include his father, Edward Bent Box Sr. of Ignacio; a brother, Eddie B. Box Jr. of Ignacio; a son, James Lloyd Box Jr. of Pocatello, Idaho; two nieces, Karen Washington and Melanie Siebel, both of Ignacio; and two nephews, Edward Box III of Las Vegas, Nev., and Matthew James Box of Ignacio.

Alejandrina Garcia Talamante

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango for Alejandrina Garcia Talamante, a longtime Durango resident, who died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. She was 101.

The cause of death was not available.

Monsignor Leo Gomez will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

A rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Cope Memorial Chapel in Farmington.

Mrs. Talamante was born Aug. 12, 1898, in Coyote, N.M. She married Fermin Talamante in 1915. She was a longtime resident of Durango before moving to Farmington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fermin Talamante; and by a daughter, Ferninia Duran.

Survivors include seven children, Alfredo Talamante, Felimon Talamante, Christobal Talamante, Isidro Talamante, Maria Martinez, Adonelia Talamante and Rose Alcon; one brother, Pete Garcia; one sister, Elvidia Salazar; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kimberly Louise Ruminer

A funeral will be Tuesday, Nov., 9, 1999, at Myrtle Cemetery in Thayer, Mo., for Kimberly Louise Ruminer, a Durango resident who died Nov. 4, 1999, in Durango. She was 36.

The cause of death was not available.

Ms. Ruminer was born Aug. 27, 1963, in Kansas City, Mo. She had lived in Durango for the past 16 months.

She enjoyed stuffed animals, balloons, toy bears, books, receiving greeting cards and watching MTV. She loved her nephews and had a sweet and quiet personality.

She is survived by her mother and father, Jamice and James Smith of Pagosa Springs; sister, Pam of Allison; brother, Jeffrey Jones of O’Fallon, Mo.; nephews, Cody and Cory Stone of Allison; maternal grandparents, Foy and Ruby Sorrell of Gatewood, Mo.; paternal grandparent, Sibyl Smith of Durango; and two stepsisters, Wendy Hare of Texas City, Texas, and Robyn Gray of Denham Springs, La.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Community Connections, 281 Sawyer Drive #200, Durango, CO 81301.

Evalyn D. Lowe

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Hood Mortuary for Evalyn D. Lowe, a longtime Durango resident who died on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, of natural causes. She was 76.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate.

Ms. Lowe was born on March 7, 1923, in Wayland, Iowa, to Leslie and Irene Schrock. Ms. Lowe attended and graduated from Wayland High School.. After graduation, she attended nursing school and received her licensed practical nursing degree.

She had lived in Durango for 25 years before moving to Ogden, Utah, for 10 years. She returned to Durango four years ago. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and reading.

She is survived by her children, Mollie Gilliam and Marc Lowe of Durango, and Michael Schrock of Ogden, Utah; a brother, Lyle Schrock of Mo.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Thomas Gaines McCulloch

Dr. Thomas Gaines McCulloch, a lifetime Durango resident, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in the EgyptAir Flight 990 disaster. He was 72.

Dr. McCulloch was born April 8, 1927, in Durango and raised on the family ranch 13 miles south of town. He attended the University of Colorado for his undergraduate studies and medical school. He married Jean Elaine Heaton on June 23, 1962, in Denver.

Following an internship with Illinois Central Hospital in Chicago, he entered the residency program at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wadsworth, Kan. Upon completion of his residency, he returned to Durango in 1967 to open his practice.

Upon his retirement in 1992, Dr. McCulloch practiced medicine in Zimbabwe as a volunteer with the Methodist Mission. After his return, he took over the ranching operation for his brother, Steve. Out of his love for ranching and the outdoors grew an awareness and concern for the environment. Following his wife, Jean, he became an active member of Taxpayers for the Animas River. He was also a member of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and donated to a wide variety of environmental causes.

His wife, Jean, died of leukemia in October 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin of Durango and Lance of California; and three granddaughters, Amanda, Carly and Chaney.

A joint memorial service for Tom McCulloch and John Voelker, who also was on Flight 990, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall.

A reception will be held at the same location following the service.
