Virginia B. Ourganian

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Petit-Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Rahway, N.J., for Virginia B. Ourganian, a Bayfield resident who died in Mancos from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was 88.

Burial will be at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, N.J., with visitation Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ourganian was born July 23, 1911, in Rahway, N.J. She married Charles J. Ourganian in 1953 and was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and traveling.

She is survived by a son, James C. Ourganian of Bayfield; two grandsons, Christopher J. Ourganian of Bayfield, and Erin J. Ourganian of Fort Collins; and, one cousin, Annette Petruccelli of Bayfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 789 Sherman St., Denver, CO 80203.

Mildred Amelia Lee Steward

A memorial service will be held in Durango at a later date for Mildred Amelia Lee Steward, who died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, of natural causes in Kanab, Utah. She was 82.

Mrs. Steward was born March 9, 1917, in Overton, Nev. She married Lester Bruce Steward in Carson City, Nev. He died Feb. 24, 1985.

Mrs. Steward lived in Durango and the surrounding area most of her life. She also lived in Hawaii with her son Bill, and in the Bahamas. She enjoyed oil painting, crocheting, flower arranging and cooking.

Survivors include two children, Georgia Slade of Kanab, Utah, and Bill Steward of Vallecito; a sister, Virginia Sampson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; six grandchildren, Janet Goode, Becky Slade, Kristy Steward, Courtney Steward, Colin Steward and Chelsea Steward; and two great-grandchildren.

There was cremation at Mrs. Steward’s request.

Bert N. Stuckman

Bert N. Stuckman, a former Oxford resident, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, south of Flagstaff, Ariz., while elk hunting with his family. He was 81.

The cause of death was not made available.

Mr. Stuckman was born June 20, 1918, on the family homestead at Oxford. He was buried in Cottonwood Cemetery in Cottonwood, Ariz., on Dec. 11, 1999. Mr. Stuckman was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mae Bass Stuckman.

Mr. Stuckman spent his summers in Cortez and winters in Wickenburg, Ariz. He moved to Cortez full time in 1997.

He is survived by a sister, Alvina Lindsey of Concho, Ariz.; a daughter, Lois Stuckman of Cortez; a son, Norm Stuckman of Wickenburg, Ariz.; grandchildren Amber and Jason Bechtol of Buckeye, Ariz., and Debbie Stuckman, Christine Cannon, and Coleen and Keith Peterson, all of Wickenburg.

Connie L. Sagrillo

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Silverton for Connie L. Sagrillo of Durango, who died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Durango. She was 51.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. John Jacobs will officiate.

Mrs. Sagrillo was born Feb. 10, 1948, in Roswell, N.M. She was a longtime resident of Silverton.

Survivors include her husband, Albert L. Sagrillo of Durango; two daughters, Stephanie Sagrillo of Grand Junction, Colo., and Teri McKenzie of Durango; her mother, Billie Jean White of Forest Lakes, Calif.; her father, James O. White of Needles, Okla.; a brother, Steve White of Forest Lakes, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

John Allen Mitchell

A private graveside service will be held for John Allen Mitchell, who died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at his home in Ignacio. He was 78.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Ravia, Okla. He was a veteran of World War II in the Army.

Mr. Mitchell lived in the Ignacio area for 30 years and was a retired pipe fitter in the oil fields.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia "Pat" Mitchell of Ignacio; a brother, Don Mitchell and a sister, Jo Anne Briningstol, both of San Angelo, Texas.

Memorial donations may be made to La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302.

Robert Franklin McKelvey

Robert Franklin McKelvey died Nov. 22, 1999, in Lakeland, Fla. He was 90.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. McKelvey was a lawyer in Durango until his retirement in 1982.

Mr. McKelvey was born July 4, 1909, in Rocky Ford, Colo. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1930 and the University of Colorado School of Law in 1934.

During World War II, he was stationed in Cairo, Egypt, as a member of the OSS. He resumed his law practice in Durango with his brother LaVerne H. McKelvey in 1945. During the 50 years, he practiced law in Durango and served as LaPlata County attorney.

Mr. McKelvey was a past Exalted Ruler of BPOE Elks Lodge No. 507, member of the Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge, a founding member of the Fiesta Committee and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Colorado Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Mr. McKelvey successfully represented LaPlata County before the U.S. Supreme Court in a lawsuit to prohibit the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad from abandoning the narrow gauge line to Silverton.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lillian White McKelvey.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Lakeland, Fla., a brother Edwin McKelvey of Aurora, Colo., a son Bob McKelvey of Farmington, two daughters, Anne Stevenson of Durango and Margaret Beck of Modesto, Calif., six granddaughters, and one great-grandson.

Carvel Eades Townsend

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Carvel Eades Townsend, a lifelong resident of La Plata County, who died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, in Durango from a long illness. He was 78.

Mr. Leslie White will officiate at services.

Mr. Townsend was born July 3, 1921, in Bayfield. He married Jessie Knight on Dec. 5, 1945, at Bayfield.

Mr. Townsend owned several businesses in his lifetime. He was a rancher of register Hereford cattle, owner of a construction business, owner with his wife of Yucca Blossom Apparel until 1985, and involved with Four Corners Sewing that his son Greg owns.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie Townsend; two sons, Richard C. Townsend of Veguita, N.M., and Greg A. Townsend of Durango; a daughter, Patricia A. Christiansen of Canon City, Colo.; three sisters, Nora Townsend and Doris Franklin of Farmington, and Lorena Brown of Lancaster, Calif.; five grandchildren, Shelly Cocherell of Durango, Rick Townsend of Gilbert, Ariz., Sara and Lynn Mortimer of Norway, Allen Christiansen of Denver, and Jessalynn Feltenz of Nashville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Dusty Cocherell of Durango, Frankie and Cole Townsend, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews from Colorado to England and Australia.

Chain V. Healy

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kan., for Chain V. Healy, who died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Wichita, Kan. He was 79.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Healy was born in 1920 in Midland, Texas. He attended Wichita North High School and the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Mr. Healy received his pilot’s license at age 14, and was an avid pilot for many years. During World War II, he served as a flight instructor in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Healy married Martha Thompson of Wichita in 1943. From 1956 to 1970, he and his family lived in Durango, where Mr. Healy was involved in the Four Corners-area oil and gas industry.

An avid skier, Mr. Healy was an early supporter of the Durango Ski Corp. and efforts to develop Purgatory Resort. He was also an active supporter of youth athletic programs in the Durango community.

In 1970, Mr. Healy returned to Wichita to join City National Bank of Wichita, where he served as executive vice president and as a member of the board of directors.

He retired from the bank in 1978, and thereafter managed farming properties and investments.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Susan Smart King of Denver; two sons, Justin of Keene, N.H., and Edward of Wichita, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Rainbows United, 340 S. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67202.

Madeline Emily Lindstrom

No services are planned for Madeline Emily Lindstrom, a Durango resident since 1995 who died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Durango from natural causes. She was 95.

Her cremains will be interred at sea this summer.

Mrs. Lindstrom was born on July 31, 1904, in Yonkers, N.Y. She worked at sea from 1937 to 1941 on passenger liners traveling to South America. During WWII she welded airplanes for the Navy. After the war, in 1946, she went to sea as a stewardess for the "bride ships," which brought war brides to the United States.

She married Carl E. Lindstrom in October 1947. In 1948 she worked as a stewardess for passenger liners. She retired from the sea in 1955 due to an injury and began to pursue her hobbies.

Mrs. Lindstrom was a housekeeper and companion for the elderly until she was 81. She was a member of the Ignacio Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lindstrom.

She is survived by a daughter, Delores "Dolly" McClure of Ignacio; brother, Charles R. Young of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandsons, Michael McClure of Ignacio, David E. McClure of West Hampton, N.Y., D. Shawn Wachtel of Higginsville, Mo., Carl R. Young and Billy Young, both of Tucson, and James Young; two granddaughters, Madeline McClure of Hubert, N.C., and Gigi Young; and numerous great-grandchildren.
