Frank Benjaman Lyall

Frank Benjaman Lyall of Bayfield died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at his sister’s home in Cortez. He was 62.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Lyall was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Fairplay, Colo. He graduated from Pagosa Springs High School and served in the U.S. Navy, enlisting May 28, 1956. He received an honorable discharge May 27, 1960, from Patrol Squadron Forty-eight in San Diego, Calif.

Mr. Lyall was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic, a truck driver and a lineman for the electric company.

He married Nettie Jo Williams July 26, 1981, in Pagosa Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Jo of Bayfield; his mother, Clarene Lyall of Cortez; a son, Frank Lyall of Mesa, Ariz.; two stepsons, Jim Thompson of Mesa, Ariz., and Charles Thompson of Ignacio; three daughters, Elizabeth Lyall of Tempe, Ariz., Rebekah Vint of Higley, Ariz., and Chelsea Lyall; a sister, Connie Robinson of Cortez; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for June.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Montezuma Inc., 1345 South Broadway, Cortez, CO 81321.

Gregory L. Neznik

Gregory L. Neznik of Durango died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000. He was 72.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Neznik was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Pueblo. He formerly lived in Tamarin Square and then moved to the Four Corners Health Care Center.

Mr. Neznik was an art therapist throughout his life. He worked in the medical industry as an art therapist.

Mr. Neznik served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vaile Neznik.

No services are planned.

Ollie L. Ford

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for Ollie L. Ford, who died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Audrey’s Care Home in Tempe, Ariz. She was 90.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Ford was born Feb. 12, 1909, in Dresden, Kan. She was the eighth of 12 daughters. She attended high school in Salida and Pueblo, and attended college at the University of California-Los Angeles, University of Washington and Denver University. She married Roy Ford on July 17, 1937, in Gunnison.

Mrs. Ford received her registered nurse license in 1938 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pueblo. She was a public health nurse in Denver and then Gunnison, before moving to Durango in 1947. From 1947 to 1972, she was a nurse for District 9-R schools.

She moved to Phoenix in 1984 and lived there until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1969.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Ford of Phoenix, Ariz., and Alan Ford of Billings, Mont.; and three grandchildren.

Naomi Hilda Rice

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Naomi Hilda Rice, an 85-year resident of the area who died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at The Valley Inn in Mancos.

She was 100.

Bishop Joe Brown will officiate at services, with burial at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Rice was born June 23, 1899, in Woodland Park, Colo.

She married Charles E. Rice when she was about 25 and had a son, Willis.

Mrs. Rice had the privilege of living in three centuries and two millenniums.

She is the last of a large pioneer family.

Mrs. Rice enjoyed playing the piano and French harp. She played both since she was 7 and by about 10 was playing at dances and parties.

She is survived by a son, Willis E. Rice of Farmington; four nieces; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-children.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Valley Inn Nursing Home, 211 Third Ave., Mancos, CO 81328, to assist in the purchase of furniture and stained glass windows for its new chapel.

Kathleen Theresa Bendik Rhodes

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Pine River Valley Baptist Church for Kathleen Theresa Bendik Rhodes, a resident of Igncio since 1995 who died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home in Ignacio.

She was 58.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Pastor Joe Sparks will officiate at services.

Mrs. Bendik was born Sept. 9, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio.

She spent her early years in Ohio and filled a lifelong dream of living in the West by moving to Arizona in 1990.

She married Robert Rhodes of Ignacio on Aug. 5, 1995 and resided in Ignacio until her unexpected death.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; mother, Mary Bendik of Parma, Ohio; daughter, Jennifer Crusan of Avondale, Ariz.; son, Matthew Arensberg of Showlow, Ariz.; brother, Chris Bendik of Richfield, Ohio; four grandchildren, Tammy, Heather, Jessica and Kaitlynn, all of Avondale, Ariz.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pine River Valley Baptist Church, 1942 Colorado Highway 172, Ignacio, CO 81137, or Storehouse Baptist Church.

Manuel Lucero

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Dolores First Baptist Church for Manuel Lucero, who died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at his home in Dolores. He was 82.

Mr. Lucero was born Dec. 25, 1917, in La Jara, N.M.

He is survived by his son, Manuel Lucero of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Manuel III, Timothy, Wendy and Dorinda Lucero, all of Albuquerque; nine great-grandchildren; a nephew, Willie Lucero of Durango; and many nieces and nephews.

Phillip Guy Denbo

A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Phillip Guy Denbo, a Durango native, who died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000. He was 26.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. Interment of cremains will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Denbo was born July 23, 1973, in Durango. He attended Durango High School. He was previously employed by Rocky Mountain Pawn for several years.

He married Tracey Lynn Binger on Nov. 24, 1999, in Durango.

Mr. Denbo was presently employed by B & D Concrete where he worked performing construction and concrete duties.

He enjoyed climbing the high peaks, and four-wheeling and camping in the mountains.

Survivors include his wife, Tracey Lynn Binger Denbo of Durango and Tracey’s daughter, Michayella Dawn Binger; his father, Phillip G. Denbo Jr. of Durango; a sister, Ann Marie Malburg of Bayfield; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins throughout Colorado.

Authorities said the cause of death was suicide.

Robert Jerome Walker

Robert Jerome Walker died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, in Casa Grande, Ariz. He was 75.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Walker was born July 5, 1924, in Walla Walla, Wash. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a radiation physicist in Berkeley, Calif., before moving to Durango in 1972.

Mr. Walker was the La Plata County Fairgrounds manager from 1976 to 1980 and then worked in private construction and other endeavors. He was a former member of the Kiwanis and volunteered at the Durango Soup Kitchen and Adult Literacy Center after retirement. He and his wife retired to Casa Grande, Ariz., in 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Rhoda A. Walker; two daughters, Nancy J. Kuhlman of Loomis, Calif., and Joanna Nichols of Durango; two sons, Kurt Walker of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Dr. Matthew A. Walker of Fargo, N.D.; a sister, Patricia Foust of Oceanside, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
