Leon Daniel Pargin

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Leon Daniel Pargin, who died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Albuquerque. He was 93.

The cause of death was not available.

Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Pargin was born Dec. 21, 1906, in a log cabin on the Piedra River near Chimney Rock. He attended high school for two years at old Fort Lewis and the last two years at Durango High School, graduating in 1927.

Mr. Pargin married Myrtle Wallace on Jan. 5, 1929, and they moved to the Pargin Ranch. He sold the ranch in 1946 and moved to Durango, where he bought a one-half interest in D & R Automotive Supply.

He worked for the Montrose Production Credit Association from 1950 until retiring Jan. 1, 1964. He was a life member of the Durango Elks Lodge and served as trustee for 12 years. He was a 50-year life member of the Masonic Lodge in Pagosa Springs. In 1963, Mr. Pargin joined the Shrine, and served as the Shrine Circus chairman for 17 years. During his retirement, he was administrator for 14 estates.

In 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Pargin moved to Albuquerque to be near their family. During their retirement years, they did considerable traveling in the United States, including Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include two sons, Robert H. Pargin and Doyle D. Pargin, both of Albuquerque; a brother, Charles Pargin of Cedar Hill, N.M.; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Ernest (Ernie) L. Muller

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church for Ernie Muller, who died January 11, 2000, in New Haven, Ind. He was 48.

Mr. Muller was born Nov. 29, 1951, in Astoria, Ore. He retired in 1997 after four years as a real estate broker. He enjoyed fishing, loved computers and studying his ministry. He was a member of St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Durango and was on the Durango School Board from 1996 to 1997. He was the treasurer of the St. Paulís Lutheran Church board from 1994 to 1997. He is survived by his wife, Linda Muller of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two daughters, Rebecca Muller of Durango, and Sarah Muller of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a son, Joel Muller of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and parents, Don and Zula Muller of Durango.

Arrangements are being made by Strohmayerís Funeral Home.

Norma F. Loudenburg

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crestview Cemetery for Norma F. Loudenburg, a former Durango resident who died Jan. 13, 2000, in Westminster, Colo. She was 86.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services.

Mrs. Loudenburg was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Gunnison, Colo. She graduated from Durango High School in 1931. She married Wayne A. Loudenburg on June 23, 1933, in Albuquerque.

She was a telephone operator and retired from AT&T in 1973. She enjoyed playing golf and bowling.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994.

She is survived by two sons, DuWayne A. Loudenburg of Durango, and Gerald E. Loudenburg of Broomfield, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

George W. Colbert

George W. Colbert died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999. He was 62.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Colbert was born Dec. 24, 1936, in Turtle Creek, Pa. He married Lorraine Martin on Aug. 3, 1957, in Turtle Creek. He received a masterís degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mr. Colbert taught at Durango High School and coached wrestling and football. He was a retired assistant principal and athletic director with Jefferson County Public Schools. He was an honorary member of the Colorado Wrestling Officials Association and a member of the Jefferson County School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Greg of Denver, Curt of Englewood, Colo., and Brian of Lakewood, Colo.; a daughter, Cindy Carey of Aurora, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren.

Mass was held Dec. 27 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Lakewood.

Nancy Kathleen Houghton

Graveside interment services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Summit Ridge Cemetery for Nancy Kathleen Houghton of Cortez, who died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver. She was 63.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Houghton was born Sept. 18, 1936, in Kansas City, Mo. She had worked as a pharmacist in this area for many years. She was a member of the Ute Mountain Gem and Mineral Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Houghton, in 1993.

Survivors include two stepsons, John Houghton of Oregon and Scott Houghton of Colorado; her stepmother, Helen Herron of Missouri; and five grandchildren, John Jr., Trevor, Jacob, Annie and Scott Jr.

Sarah-Louise 'Sally' Rogers Hayes

A memorial service will be at a later date for Sarah-Louise "Sally" Rogers Hayes, who died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. She was 81.

The cause of death was not available.

Mrs. Hayes was born July 26, 1918, in Battle Creek, Mich. She earned a bachelor of science and masterís degree in education at State University of New York at Cortland, and also earned masterís degrees from Skidmore College and the University of Texas.

Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Alpha Sigma Sorority. Her professional teaching career spanned 55 years serving in public schools, colleges, Peace Corps and the Navajo Indian Reservation in Rock Point, Ariz.

After serving several years as assistant womenís dean at the University of Maine State Teachers College in Farmington, Mrs. Hayes joined the Peace Corps in 1970, where she was sent to teach in Western Samoa. While there, she developed and implemented numerous education programs for the Samoan students and established the first formal educational program for patients and families of the Hansonís Disease colony. Mrs. Hayes was also the author of the Peace Corps Teachersí Primer, which the Peace Corps has used as an educational training manual.

She was a member of the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Eastern Association of Physical Education for Women and numerous community volunteer organizations.

Survivors include a sister, Nancy Minnett of Grass Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Dr. Patricia Arthur of Kamuela, Hawaii; three sons, Charles of Hilton Head, S.C., Gerald of Dayton, Ohio, and Ralph of Durango; five grandchildren, Eric, Leon, Bianca, Annie and Charles and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez, CO 81321.

Vada M. Katschthaler

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Vada M. Katschthaler, an 80-year resident of Durango who died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center from natural causes. She was 86.

Father Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Katschthaler was born Feb. 12, 1913, in La Plata, N.M. She married Henry A. Katschthaler on June 1, 1932, at St. Columba Catholic Church. She was a member of the Durango Garden Club, Emblem Club, Neighbors of Woodcraft and St. Columba Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry.

She is survived by a sister, Naomi Hiner of Durango; daughter, Shirley Scott of Durango; four grandsons, Randy E. Scott, Rodney Scott, Stevan Scott and Michael Scott, all of Durango; granddaughter, Sheri Clark of Albuquerque, N.M.; four great-grandsons, Matthew Clark of Albuquerque, N.M., and David Scott, Joseph H. Scott and Trent Scott, all of Durango; and four great-granddaughters, Crystal Scott, Samantha Scott, Kelcie Scott and Shelby A. Scott, all of Durango.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vada M. Katschthaler Memorial Fund, c/o The Children's Hospital Foundation, Cardiac Care Center, 1129 E. 17th Ave., Denver, CO 80218.

Evelyn Luella (Blomberg) Olson

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D., for Evelyn Luella (Blomberg) Olson, a former Mancos resident who died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000. She was 79.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Burial will be at Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Olson was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Ruso, N.D. She grew up in Madison, S.D., and graduated with a teaching certificate from Eastern Normal in Madison, where she taught in a one-room school house for one year.

She married David L. Olson in 1942 and in 1948 they moved to Watertown, S.D. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for more than 50 years.

In recent years she lived at the Valley Inn Care facility in Mancos.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David, and a daughter, Kristi.

She is survived by daughters, Brenda Star of DeLand, Fla., Karen Lovelien of Mancos, and Gretchen Gardner of Lancaster, Calif; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Foundation, Grace Lutheran Church, 202 Second St. SE, Watertown, S.D. 57201.
