John Ernest Nelson

John Ernest Nelson died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000. He was 91.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Nelson was born July 25, 1909, in Ouray and grew up in the Sunnyside area south of Durango.

Mr. Nelson attended Sunnyside School and was a 1927 graduate of Durango High School. He received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois.

Mr. Nelson’s professional life was spent working for General Electric. He lived in Denver since his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Cozine Nelson.

Survivors include his sister, Ruby Nelson Zink of Durango; a daughter, Martha Nelson Hartmann of Denver; two granddaughters, Erin and Megan Hartmann, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are being held in Denver.

Mario Ramous Chavez

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Mario Ramous Chavez, who died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Durango. He was 40.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Ignacio Cemetery. A Rosary service will be 6 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Chavez was born March 22, 1959, in Durango. He was a lifelong resident of Ignacio.

Mr. Chavez was an artist. He was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

Mr. Chavez enjoyed fishing, cruising and photography.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Mario Angelo Chavez.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna Chavez of Ignacio; four daughters, Marvina, Celeste, Ilene and Larae Chavez, all of Ignacio; his father, Dennis Chavez of California; two sisters, Kathy and Michelle Chavez, both of Ignacio; and a brother, Cedric Chavez of Ignacio.

W.M. ‘Bill’ Templeton

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for W.M. "Bill" Templeton, a Durango resident since 1954, who died Feb. 22, 2000, in Durango from cancer. He was 84.

Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Templeton was born Feb. 18, 1916, in Miami, Ariz. He moved to Durango from Farmington in 1954. He was the owner of Animas Sheet Metal and Radiator Shop until his retirement in 1976.

Mr. Templeton was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge and the Durango Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Clara, of Durango; two sons, Don Templeton of Durango and Gary Patterson of Santee, Calif.; a daughter, Susan K. Ralston of Maricopa, Calif.; eight grandchildren and five great-granddaughters.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango CO 81301.

LeRoy ‘Jack’ Neils McCulley

LeRoy "Jack" Neils McCulley died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 74.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. McCulley was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Portland, Ore.

Mr. McCulley worked for the U.S. government for five years, for Shell Oil for five years and as a contractor for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, "Skip" McCulley of Durango; two sons, Bruce McCulley of Cortez and Mark McCulley of Durango, and two granddaughters.

No services are planned at this time.

Jose George Valencia

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Marvel Cemetery for Jose George Valencia, who died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 86.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Valencia was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Redmesa.

Mr. Valencia was a hard rock miner in Silverton. He spent most of his life in Marvel until he moved to the Four Corners Health Care Center in 1996.

Mr. Valencia enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include two sons, George Valencia Jr. of Olathe, Colo., and Ted Valencia of Montrose, Colo.; a daughter, Rose Aragon of Grand Junction, Colo.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Four Corners Health Care Center, 2911 Junction Street, Durango, CO 81301.

Rebecca Rose 'Becky' Campbell

Memorial services will be held in Columbus, Ohio, for Rebecca Rose "Becky" Campbell, who died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at her home in Durango. She was 36.

The cause of death is not yet known.

Mrs. Campbell was born Feb. 8, 1964, in Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Durango in July 1998.

Survivors include her son, Jeremiah Campbell of Columbus, Ohio; fatvher, Richard E. Curtiss of Columbus; her brother, Richard D. Curtiss of Columbus; and her companion, Jeff Greidanus of Durango.

Emma Frances Jacques

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Emma Frances Jacques, who died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Durango. She was 70.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Ignacio Cemetery. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Jacques was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Ignacio and was raised in the Ignacio area.

Mrs. Jacques was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. She enjoyed the outdoors and especially yard ornaments.

Survivors include her son, Sam Gonzales of Bloomfield, N.M.; three brothers, Del Silva of Ignacio, Ross Silva of Bloomfield, N.M., and Louie Silva of North Carolina; a sister, Pauline Sanchez of Bayfield; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence Fredrick Stanley

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Marvel United Methodist Church for Clarence Fredrick Stanley, who died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Durango. He was 78.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Bud Rousset will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery with military honors by Trujillo-Sheets Post 28.

Mr. Stanley was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Maxville, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to the Durango area in 1974 from Dodge City, Kan.

Mr. Stanley was a member of the American Legion, Trujillo-Sheets Post 28 and Marvel United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include his brother, Charlie Stanley of Tennessee; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
