Larry B. Pittman

Larry B. Pittman died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Pleasant Hill, Calif. He was 60.

The causes of death were long-term pulmonary and heart diseases.

Mr. Pittman was born Sept. 24, 1939, in Alamosa, Colo. He moved to Durango in 1954.

He married Shirley Ann Chacon of Durango on June 11, 1960.

Mr. Pittman later moved to the Oakland, Calif., area where he worked various jobs. He was an avid reader and enjoyed photography as a hobby and career.

Survivors include one daughter, Anthea L. Pittman, and one son, Richard J. Pittman, both of the Tempe, Ariz., area; two brothers, Lysle R. Pittman, of Bayfield, and Lester S. Pittman, of Gainesville, Fla.; one sister, Lila R. Pittman, of Farmington, N.M.; one granddaughter and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Oscar J. "Bud" Peterson

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary for Oscar J. "Bud" Peterson of Ignacio, who died of cancer on Sunday, March 12, 2000. He was 75.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Peterson was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Aztec, N.M. He graduated from Durango High School in 1941.

Mr. Peterson served in the U.S. Army as a platoon sergeant, military policeman and range section operator during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Army and returned to school graduating from Fort Lewis College in 1967 with a bachelor of arts degree in accounting and education.

Mr. Peterson worked for the Durango City Water Works before attending college. After graduation, he became an accountant for Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev., and then Circus Circus in Las Vegas, Nev. He retired in 1984 and moved back to Ignacio.

He enjoyed raising sheep and goats, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Peterson.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry A. Caranta of Durango; two grandchildren, Evelyn Kennell of Durango and Evette Wiley of Bayfield; and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Lloyd Marvin Brewer

A funeral will be held in Susanville, Calif., for Lloyd Marvin Brewer, a nine-year resident of Pagosa Springs, who died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, from a stroke. He was 75.

Mr. Brewer was born Jan. 15, 1925 in Cañon City, Colorado. He retired in Pagosa Springs in 1991.

Mr. Brewer graduated from Cañon City High School in 1943 where he was a three-sport athlete and the class president. He attended the University of Washington for undergraduate studies and went on to dentistry school at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated in the top of his class in 1957. Mr. Brewer also served in the Navy in Word War II. He was licensed to practice dentistry in Missouri, Colorado and California, and he practiced in Susanville for 25 years. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Brewer, of Boulder, and Mark Brewer, of Littleton; and three granddaughters, Allegra Brewer, of Boulder, Kori Brewer, of Littleton, and Keeli Brewer, of Littleton.

Jack Lee Elston

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Pine Valley Church of the Four Square Gospel for Jack Lee Elston, of Bayfield, who died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in Durango. He was 67.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Bob Kujath will officiate. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary Saturday until 5:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Elston was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Colorado Springs. He married LaVonne McCoy Sept. 19, 1970, at the McCoy family ranch in Bayfield.

Mr. Elston worked as a builder much of his life in Colorado Springs and locally. After moving to the area, he also worked at Federal Lumber until it closed. He then worked with LePlatt LP Gas in Bayfield for many years. Afterwards, Mr. Elston worked with Basin Propane.

Mr. Elston was an active member of the Bayfield Lions Club and enjoyed working in his yard and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, LaVonne Elston of Bayfield; one daughter, Becky Hotal of Bayfield; two sons, Dean Humbard of Gunnison and Will Humbard of Corrales, N.M.; five grandchildren; one aunt and one uncle.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jack Elston Memorial Fund, c/o Pine River Valley Bank, 301 N. Commerce Drive, Bayfield, CO 81122. Funds will be used for the Rocky Mountain Lions eye charities.

Ramona Mary Storm

Ramona Mary Storm died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in Rio Rancho, N.M. She was 81.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Storm and her husband, Robert R. Storm, were key in setting up the Universalist Unitarian House and Fellowship in Durango.

Mrs. Storm was a resident of Rio Rancho for the past year. She had been a writer until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Storm, and one daughter, Gayle Storm Tanaka Montoya.

Survivors include three children, Todd R. Storm of Rochester, N.Y., Jill Storm-Dougherty of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Randall Storm of Lakewood, Colo.; two sisters, Phyllis Simon of Gary, Ind., and Adrienne Steinorth of Deerfield, Ill.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Adela M. Esparza

Adela M. Esparza died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Espanola, N.M. She was 80.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Ms. Esparza was born April 8, 1919, in El Rancho, N.M. She was a former resident of Ignacio.

Survivors include three daughters, Alice Baker of Ignacio, Lindy Gallegos of Mesa, Ariz., and Judy Duran of Albuquerque, N.M.; five sons, Dan Esparza of Grand Junction, Colo., Leroy Esparza of Yuba City, Calif., Edward Esparza and James Esparza, both of Espanola, N.M., and Thomas Esparza of Albuquerque, N.M.; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held March 2 at Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz, N.M. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Fred ‘Lloyd’ Palmer

Fred "Lloyd" Palmer died Monday, March 6, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 88.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Palmer was born Aug. 31, 1911, in West Plains, Mo. He lived in Durango for 51 years.

Mr. Palmer was a carpenter most of his life. He had also farmed and ranched around Cedar Hill, N.M., during his early years.

Survivors include his son, Lloyd R. Palmer of Grand Junction, Colo.; two daughters, Alice A. Chapman of Delta, Colo., and Karen S. Cugnini of Cortez; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for Lloyd Palmer will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Tamarin Square Senior Living Apartments, 1401 East Third Ave.

William Harvey, Jr.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for William Harvey, Jr., a Durango resident, who died March 6, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 80.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Harvey was born July 12, 1919, in Ridgeway, Pa. He married Lola Bernice Howard on August 8, 1942, at Chattanooga, Tenn. They moved to Durango from Decatur, Tenn., where Mr. Harvey enjoyed outdoor activities.

He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Gantzert of Durango, Billie Ann Maywright of Cazenovia, N.Y., and Jean Bifulco of Lancaster, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Reed Gantzert and Cydney Gantzert of Durango, Bob Bifulco and Jerrie Ann Harris of Syracuse, N.Y., Tony Bifulco of Cleveland, Ohio; and Jessica Maywright of Atlanta, Ga.

Mr. Harvey was preceded in death by his wife on March 6, 1998.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Manuel Arellano, Jr.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Pine Valley Church of the Foursquare Gospel for Manuel Arellano, Jr., a 12-year Bayfield resident, who died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Albuquerque, N.M., from natural causes. He was 74.

Pastor Robert Kujath will officiate at services. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mr. Arellano was born June 5, 1925, in Morenci, Ariz. He lived the last 12 years of his life in Bayfield. He married Orlinda Jaramillo on July 7, 1977, in Long Beach, Calif.

He served in the Marines during World War II, having attained the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Arellano is survived by his wife, Orlinda Arellano of Bayfield; a son, Billy Arellano of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Gerie Elizondo of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Rose Apodaca of Los Angeles, Calif., and Connie Apodaca of Los Angeles, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Rosemary Folks of Bayfield, and Jo Ann Valdez of Aztec, N.M.; three stepsons, Roy Jaramillo of Chama, N.M., James Serrano of Bayfield, and Lee Serrano of Bloomfield, N.M.; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
