Elna Karlsson Larson

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Olinger’s Magnolia Chapel in Denver for Elna Larson, who died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango from natural causes. She was 104.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Olinger’s Magnolia Chapel.

Mrs. Larson was born on January 29, 1896, in Sweden. She moved from Denver to Durango in 1990. She married Fred Larson in 1952 in Denver.

While in Denver, Mrs. Larson was a cook for many prominent Denver families. She especially enjoyed crocheting and reading. She also traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries.

She is survived by one sister, Seigrid Carlson of Sweden; one nephew, Lars Johnson of Durango; and several other nieces and nephews throughout the United States and Sweden.

Robert M. ‘Mick’ Esgar

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Lamar for Robert M. "Mick" Esgar, who died of heart disease Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Denver. He was 64.

Elder Dave Gardner will officiate. Burial will be at Wiley Cemetery in Wiley.

Mr. Esgar was born Sept. 7, 1935, in La Junta. He lived in Durango in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His parents owned a ranch and a doughnut shop.

Mr. Esgar was a former resident of Wiley.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Paula D. Esgar, of their home in Pueblo West; two children, John P. Esgar and Cynthia Bevins, both of Bayfield; two grandchildren, Corbin and Anna Bevins, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; his mother, Bonnie Esgar of Pueblo; and a brother, Clayton E. Esgar of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Emmett Geiger

Emmett Geiger died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 84.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Geiger was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Jonesboro, Ark. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired fireman from the Fort Bliss, Texas, Fire Department.

Mr. Geiger moved to Durango in 1991 to be with family members.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Geiger of Durango; two sons, Raleigh and Steve Geiger, both of Durango; and three grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Gary David Miller

Gary David Miller died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 51.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Miller was born May 19, 1948, in Enid, Okla. He was a graduate of Enid High School, where he played football, played guitar and sang in a band.

Mr. Miller was a graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma University, and he earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Miller enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was also a traveler and adventurer, and had traveled to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Alaska and throughout the United States.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Miller of Enid, Okla.; a sister; two brothers; a niece and a nephew.

Ruby Lea Metz

Ruby Lea Metz died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000. She was 91.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Metz was a longtime Durango teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Albert Metz, in 1997.

Survivors include eight children, 25 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, one sister and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are pending for early next week.

Archie Harrison Jones

Archie Harrison Jones of Denver, a former dean at Fort Lewis College, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000. He was 79.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Jones was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Kenosha, Wis. He held a bachelor’s degree from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., and master’s and doctorate degrees in history from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Jones married Phyllis Kathryn Rutherford Dec. 26, 1941, in Chicago. He served for four years during World War II in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of captain.

Mr. Jones was a retired university professor and administrator. In 1970, he was appointed dean of academic affairs at Fort Lewis College. In 1973, he assumed the presidency of Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Jones of Denver; two children, Michael Jones of Libertyville, Ill., and Carolyn Jones of Denver; and three grandsons.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date in Chicago and Keystone, Colo.

Memorial donations may be made to the University of Chicago, Office of the Dean of the College, 1116 E. 59th Street, Chicago, IL 60637.

Eunice D. Walsh

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenmount Cemetery for Eunice D. Walsh, a longtime area resident who died April 27, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango from natural causes. She was 94.

Mr. Lyle Short will officiate at services, with burial to follow.

Mrs. Walsh was born on Dec. 19, 1905, in Sunnyside, the community just south of Durango. She was the daughter of William and Constance Short. She grew up in Sunnyside and attended a year of high school at the old Fort Lewis School. She married William J. Walsh on May 22, 1926, at Sunnyside. She attended college at Adams State University in Alamosa and obtained a teaching certificate.

Mrs. Walsh taught elementary school throughout Colorado. She lived in Sun City, Ariz., for 30 years before returning to Durango.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 8, 1969.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Beaston, of Durango; three brothers, Oran Short, Merl Short and Lyle Short, all of Durango; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Fort Lewis Education Fund, 2500 Berndt Hall, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

Anne E. Strand

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church for Anne E. Strand, a former Durango resident who died Thursday, April 27, at home from natural causes. She was 87.

Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mrs. Strand was born Nov. 7, 1912, in Ford City, Pa.

She was a registered nurse when she met her husband in Havana, Cuba, at the American Hospital. She was a nurse for 40 years and spent the last 20 years before retirement at the San Bernardino, Calif., School District. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and an enthusiastic gardener. She and her husband enjoyed years of fishing, cross-country skiing, hiking and backpacking.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan Strand Johnson of Albuquerque, Kathryn Strand of Boulder, and Mary Nicholson of Durango; three sisters, Marie Burnside of Cudahy, Wis., Helen Kirk of Ithaca, N.Y., and Gertrude Diamond of Iron River, Wis.; one brother, Peter Grandish of Florida; and three granddaughters, Nina Strand Johnson of Albuquerque, Anna Nicholson and Emily Nicholson of Durango.

She was preceded in death by her husband James L. "Roy" Strand in 1993.

Shirley Elaine (Kohler) Auderset

A graveside funeral service will be at 10 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery for Shirley Elaine (Kohler) Auderset, who died Monday, April 24, at her home in Durango. She was 62.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Auderset was born May 7, 1937, in Arboles and married Frank Auderset on Dec. 22, 1971, in Durango.

Mrs. Auderset lived in Durango for many years and in the area all of her life. She was an artist who loved flowers and birds. She attended nursing school and worked at Eventide Nursing Home (Four Corners Health Care Center) for several years and then at Community Hospital for 20 years. She also took care of people in their homes.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, of Durango; a brother, Don Kohler of Nucla, Colo.; two sisters, Betty Stutzer of Durango and Doris Walker of Durango; and three nieces and one nephew.
