Marian S. Salmon

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Farmington for Marian S. Salmon, a former Bayfield resident who died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at her home in Bloomfield. She was 89.

Father James E. Pullis will officiate at services. Cremation has taken place.

Mrs. Salmon was born Aug. 26, 1910, in Kansas City, Kan., to Grover and Bertha Sears. She attended Duke University and served in the South Pacific during WWII for the Army.

She married Joe T. Salmon in 1959, and they lived on ranches in Bayfield and Bloomfield. She belonged to the Women’s Overseas Service League and served as its president. She was also president of the La Plata County Cowbells Association, and for 15 years was a member of the San Juan Agriculture Board.

Mrs. Salmon was a charter member of the St. Jude’s Anglican Church. Mr. and Mrs. Salmon have donated land for Bishops Square and Salmon Park in Bloomfield.

She is survived by her husband; and one brother, Howard Sears of Lebanon, Mo.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Salmon’s name to the St. Jude Anglican Church, 4200 College Blvd., Farmington, N.M. 87401; or the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch, 209 Hendrix Road, N.E., Albuquerque, N.M., 87110.

Delfin Valdez

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Columba Catholic Church for Delfin Valdez, who died Friday, May 5, 2000, in Durango. He was 82.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate.

The service was previously scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

An avid antique collector, Delfin Valdez died Friday, May 5, 2000, in Durango. He was 82.

Mr. Valdez was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Governador, N.M. He moved to Durango in 1942. He was a construction worker involved in building and road projects.

Mr. Valdez was preceded in death by his wife, Leonard Valdez, and a great-granddaughter, Star Martinez.

He is survived by four daughters, Alberta Mabel Wallace of Pueblo, Lilia Riggin Nix of Ignacio, Bernice Avellino of Denver and Susan Diaz of Parker; three sons, Larry and Joe Valdez of Denver, and Ernie Valdez of Durango; a sister, Mela Chavez of Layton, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Edna Viola Walters Horther

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango for Edna Viola Walters Horther, who died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Life Care Center of Farmington, N.M. She was 98.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Lorraine Stimac will officiate.

Mrs. Horther was born May 19, 1901, in Bingham Lake, Minn. Her family moved to Colorado when she was 4. They moved to Ignacio in 1911 where her father managed the T.D. Burnes Mercantile Store.

In 1921, she married William J. Horther. They lived in Ignacio until 1926 when they moved and made their home in Durango.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967; and her son, William Horther.

Survivors include her sister, Shirley Arnold of Farmington, N.M.; six grandchildren, Doug, Beverly, Lori, Joe, Ellen and Jan; nine great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.

R.B. ‘Tor’ Meyers

Funeral services were held May 4 at Mesa City Cemetery in Mesa, Ariz., for R.B. "Tor" Meyers, a longtime Bayfield resident, who died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Mesa. He was 50.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

A memorial is tentatively planned for area friends on June 6, which would have been his 51st birthday. Time and place will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Meyers was born June 6, 1949, in Hollywood, Calif. He moved to the Bayfield area 30 years ago, where he lived until he moved to Arizona six years ago. He worked there for his father, who was founder of Western Transport Corp.

Mr. Meyers was a member of the Mesa Chapter of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club.

He is survived by his mother, Lila Lee O’Conner Meyers of Mesa; one daughter, Morgan Adams, of Branson, Mo.; one sister, Rory, of Oregon; and, one grandson, Max, of Branson.

Philip L. Sapp

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Cortez for Philip L. Sapp, a lifelong resident of the area, who died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 80.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Margaret Mary.

Mr. Sapp was born May 25, 1919, in Durango. He graduated from Bayfield High School in 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Nov. 7, 1941, and served in the last horse-drawn cavalry in the European Theater.

In June 1951, he married Barbara A. Parks of Bayfield. In the fall of 1951, they moved to Cortez.

Mr. Sapp worked for the Montezuma County Road Department for 42 years, retiring in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of the family home; three children, Lew, Ginger and Gene; and two granddaughters, Terra and Tamis, of Durango; a brother, Roger Sapp of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and a large extended family.

Services are pending with Ertel Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Leukemia Society.

Mary Ellen Pokorny

Mary Ellen Pokorny, a former resident of Durango, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Pasadena, Calif. She was 85.

Mrs. Pokorny was born July 6, 1914, in Durango. She graduated from Durango High School.

Mrs. Pokorny is survived by her daughter, Beverly Van Cleave and her son, John Cook, both of California.

Mrs. Pokorny will be buried in the family plot at Greenmount Cemetery.

Betty C. Ritchhart

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenmount Cemetery for Betty C. Ritchhart, who died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz. She was 82.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Ritchhart was born April 15, 1918, in Armstrong, Okla. She married John Ritchhart on June 25, 1955, in Tulsa, Okla.

Mrs. Ritchhart was a nurse in Tulsa before moving to Durango. Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1997. She moved to Mesa, Ariz., two years ago to be near friends.

She is survived by a nephew, Clark Nash of Franklin, Texas.

John J. Mulloy

John J. Mulloy of Northglenn, Colo., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Denver of pancreatic cancer. He was 52.

Mr. Mulloy was born July 31, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo. He lived in Shawnee, Kan., until he entered the Marine Corps in 1967. He served in Vietnam and earned two Purple Hearts.

Mr. Mulloy moved to Denver in 1971.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Aimee Mulloy.

Survivors include his wife, Lanora; two children, Jay and Shawnee Mulloy; a grandson, Jonathyn Mulloy; two step-grandchildren, Samantha and Tylor Jakino; four brothers, Jim, Jerry, Denny and Pat Mulloy; three sisters, Connie Occhipinto, Sean Spraley and Mary Mulloy and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were held in Northglenn, Colo. Visitation will be 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Bayfield with graveside services shortly after 2 p.m. at Bayfield Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer "Pancan Organization," c/o Runyan Stevenson Capitol Mortuary, 6427 W. Alameda, Lakewood, CO 80226.
