Donald E. Billings

Donald E. Billings of Statesboro, Ga., died of pneumonia Monday, July 31, 2000. He was 85.

Mr. Billings was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1931 and from Fort Lewis College in 1933. He taught for several years at the Oxford School.

He then attended the University of Colorado where he received a doctorate.

Mr. Billings was a professor at the University of Colorado for many years.

During World War II, Mr. Billings was employed by the Navy working in Charleston, S.C. While in South Carolina, he met his wife, Claire Zeagler.

Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Statesboro, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Claire.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 3 at the Zeagler Family Cemetery near Sylvania, Ga.

John Landrum Loftis Jr.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Geo. H. Lewis and Sons in Houston, Texas, for John Landrum Loftis Jr., a Durango resident who died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000. He was 84.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Dr. Charles Williams and the Rev. Thomas Hill will officiate.

Mr. Loftis was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Deming, N.M., and grew up in Abilene, Texas. He received a degree in geology from the University of Texas and worked for Exxon as a geologist for 42 years.

Survivors include his wife, Teddine of Durango; three children, John Loftis III of Durango, Vincent Loftis of Midland, Texas, and Joy Harwell of New Waverly, Texas; seven grandchildren, John IV, Sarah, Jordan, Jennifer, Mike, Adam and Lee; two great-grandchildren; one nephew; and two great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, 900 Portway, Houston, TX 77024 or the American Heart Association, 1415 La Concha, Houston, TX 77054.

Marilynne J. Johnson

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crestview Cemetery for Marilynne Joyce Johnson, a Durango business owner, who died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Farmington. She was 55.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 23, 1944 in Champaign, Ill. She married Ronald E. Johnson on Dec. 29, 1962, at Champaign.

She and her husband owned and operated Western Land Survey in Durango. She loved animals, gardening and her work at the Survey Company.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald E. Johnson, of Durango; a son, Ronald E. Johnson Jr., of Durango; a sister, Deanna Miller, of Durango; and one grandson, Ronald E. Johnson III, of Durango.

Richard A. Feinauer

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Hotchkiss, Colo., for Richard Albert Feinauer, an office-supply salesman, who died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 at his home in Crawford, Colo., from natural causes. He was 70.

The Rev. Mike Smith will officiate at services.

Mr. Feinauer was born March 6, 1930, in Mt. Peilier, Idaho, and spent his childhood in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Josephine Scherrer Crook Feinauer on Dec. 21, 1973, at Durango.

He lived in Durango, and then later in Glenwood Springs and Crawford. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and keeping up his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of Crawford; two stepsons, James M. Crook and John Oliver Crook, both of Crawford; one daughter, Brenda Pease, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and one stepdaughter, Joni Beed, of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., and two grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society in care of Fredrica Morris, 1451 Highway 65, Eckert, Colo., 81416.

Gary Jay Kuhstoss

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Gary Jay Kuhstoss, who died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home in Ignacio after a 10-month illness with brain cancer. He was 60.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mr. Kuhstoss was born July 21, 1940, in Langdondale, Pa. He married Elizabeth Elly Tjandrapurnama Sept. 9, 1995, in Durango.

Mr. Kuhstoss was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He lived in Denver for a number of years and worked for the U.S. Mint, IBM and then was an electrician at Rocky Flats. He then began a career with the Department of the Interior in the Bureau of Reclamation beginning in Montrose.

Mr. Kuhstoss later went to the Hoover Dam where he was a supervising mechanic. He retired in 1996 as the manager of the Glen Canyon Dam at Lake Powell. He liked to travel, hunt, fish and camp.

Survivors include his wife, Elly; his mother, Ella Kuhstoss of Prescott, Ariz.; a son, Gary J. Kuhstoss of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Kristine Prael of Littleton, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Peters and Kelly Peters, both of Ignacio; a stepson, Josef Peters of Ignacio; a brother, Julius Kuhstoss of Prescott, Ariz.; two sisters, Yvonne Gorecki of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jacqueline Hancock of Camp Verde, Ariz.; and, two granddaughters.

Max O. Day Jr.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at French Mortuary in Albuquerque for Max O. Day Jr., who died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Albuquerque. He was 56.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Dennis Barker will officiate.

Mr. Day was a resident of Albuquerque and was a former resident of Durango.

Mr. Day was a member of the National Association of Pipe Fitters Union, Local 412, for 31 years. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Day; three sons, Donnie Day and Jeff Day, both of Yuma, Ariz., and James Day of Albuquerque; two sisters, Mary Pierce and Betty Colyer, both of Los Alamos, N.M.; and, four grandchildren.

Jeanette ‘Jackie’ Romana Cooper

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for Jeanette "Jackie" Romana Cooper, who died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at her home in Cortez. She was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenmount Cemetery. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. Joseph McGuinness will officiate.

Mrs. Cooper was born Sept. 15, 1933, in Jacksonville, Fla. She lived in Cortez for the past six years, leaving her home of 20 years in Hesperus.

Mrs. Cooper was a member of the Catholic Daughters and enjoyed ice fishing and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Cooper in 1989 and by her son, Sonny Wilder.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Rhoads of California, Sunshine "Jinx" Stevens of Iowa and Julie Watkins of Amarillo, Texas; eight grandchildren; and, four great-grandchildren.

Concetta Montonati

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for Concetta Montonati, who died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 83.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Andrew Cooley will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be today until 8:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary.

Ms. Montonati was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Durango and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a bookkeeper for many years for the Zellitti family machine shop business. She then worked a short time at Plaza Pharmacy before going to Safeway where she was a checker. She also rented rooms in her home to college students for many years.

Ms. Montonati was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, John Montonati.

Survivors include five children, Frank Montonati of Preston, Ariz., Donna Harper of Durango, Janet Tubbs of Nigeria, Africa, Joan Dell of Beatrice, Neb., and Ron Zellitti of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Dominic Zellitti of Durango and Albert Zellitti of Sacramento, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to the Concetta Montonati Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Drawer L, Durango, CO 81302, for the care and benefit of her great-grandson, Nick Montonati.
