Gertrude L. Brown

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenmount Cemetery for Gertrude L. Brown, who died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 95.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Timothy Evers will officiate.

Mrs. Brown was born July 16, 1905, in Denver. She taught in country schools in the area before moving to California.

She married Jesse W. Brown in 1934 in Los Angeles, Calif. She returned to live in Durango with her husband in 1948.

Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and artist.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sept. 11, 1978.

She is survived by several cousins.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 2282, Durango, CO 81302.

Leo Ellsworth Staley

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel for Leo Ellsworth Staley, who died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in a traffic accident near Hesperus. He was 88.

The Rev. Kent Slyter will officiate. Interment graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fowler Cemetery in Fowler, Colo.

Mr. Staley was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Parsons, Kan. He worked as a civil engineer before retiring.

Mr. Staley enjoyed traveling, and was an avid reader. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

He was married to Mary Huntley who preceded him in death in 1990.

He is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Shown of Monte Vista, Colo., and Gladys Staley of Cañon City, Colo.; and a nephew.

Memorial contributions can be made in Leo Ellsworth Staley’s name at Vectra Bank.

Henry Hahn

Henry Hahn died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, in San Diego, Calif. He was 81.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Hahn was born June 16, 1919, in Windsor, Colo. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1959. He was the Navy recruiter in Durango for one year. He married the former Catherine Gallavan of Durango. They resided in San Diego.

Mr. Hahn retired from the Navy as a chief warrant officer. He was a submarine veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After retirement from the Navy, he worked as a master carpenter and a volunteer at University Hospital for 12 years. He belonged to the Sub Vets, St. Columba Seniors and Clairemont Senior Friendship.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Hahn; two daughters, Regina Rock of Idaho and Mary Kate VanHook of Oregon; six sons, William of Colorado, Patrick of Arizona and John, James, Michael and Gene of San Diego; two sisters, Mollie Miller and Katherine Arnst of Colorado; two brothers, Herman of San Mateo, Calif., and Robert of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass was held Oct. 9 at St. Columba Church in San Diego. Interment was Oct. 11 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery for Military Interment.

Franklin Andrew Carter

Franklin Andrew Carter died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Pagosa Springs. He was 61.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Bob Case will officiate a Masonic service.

Mr. Carter was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Eastland, Texas. He moved to Pagosa Springs in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Carter of Pagosa Springs; his mother, Ruby Blanch Carter of Cisco, Texas; a sister, Ruby Jo Ritter of Eastland, Texas; three sons, Andy Carter of Abilene, Texas, Mike Carter of Garland, Texas, and Douglas Carter of Georgia; a daughter, Lisa Wilson of Abilene, Texas; four stepsons, Lee and David Quick of Portales, N.M., John Quick of Los Lunas, N.M., and Otis Quick of Salt Lake City, Utah; two stepdaughters, Catherine McDonald of Portales, N.M., and Connie Williams of Harrold, S.D.; and numerous grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary.

Ronald Dale Newman

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Baptist Church in New Braunfels, Texas, for Ronald Dale Newman, who died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000. He was 60.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

After the service, there will be cremation, and Mr. Newman’s remains will be taken to Colorado.

Mr. Newman was born Aug. 3, 1940, in Monterey Park, Calif. He graduated from high school in Durango and entered the Air Force, stationed at Colorado Springs from 1959 to 1962, serving as a medic.

Mr. Newman then moved back to Durango and worked at Mercy Hospital as an emergency room technician. In 1963, he met Roberta Pierson, when both worked at Mercy. They married and moved to Houston, Texas. The couple also lived in Denver and New York City, where Mr. Newman worked as an educational specialist in dental x-ray.

In 1980, Mr. Newman joined J. Morita Corp. of Japan, and the family lived in Torrance, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta of New Braunfels, Texas; a son, Patrick Newman of Fremont, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jessica, Candace and Ashley Bettencourt; a sister, Eveline Wagner of Tennessee; two step-sisters, Marilyn Foster and Caroline Abramson of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Oakwood Baptist Church or Hospice New Braunfels, c/o Zoeller Funeral Home, 615 Landa Street, New Braunfels, TX 78130, or the charity of one’s choice.

Walter Clyde West

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ertel Memorial Chapel for Walter Clyde West, who died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 90.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Lynn Evans will officiate. Interment services will follow at the Cortez Cemetery with Masonic services by Cortez Lodge 133 AF&AM.

Mr. West was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Winters, Texas. He was an active member of the community and was a real estate broker in the Cortez area for many years.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dale W. West.

Survivors include his wife, Stella; and a sister, Lucille Roytek of Bakersfield, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Robert W. Delaney

A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Robert W. Delaney, a former Fort Lewis College professor of history and Southwest studies, who died Nov. 10, 2000, at his home in Albuquerque from cancer. He was 82.

Father Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery immediately following the mass.

Mr. Delaney was born Oct. 15, 1918, in Mason County, Mo., before joining the Fort Lewis faculty in 1957. He married Maria "Ria" Bauer 42 years ago. He helped found the Center of Southwest Studies in 1964 and became its first part-time director.

He earned the Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Man of Achievement Award in 1969. He was president of the Durango Fine Arts Council between 1970 and 1972 and the Durango Public Library Board from 1977 to 1979.

Mr. Delaney wrote a history of Fort Lewis College, Blue Coats, Red Skins and Black Gowns: 100 Years of Fort Lewis, in 1977 and co-authored The Southern Utes: A Tribal History, in 1972.

Mr. Delaney retired from Fort Lewis in 1986 when he and his wife moved to Old Town in Albuquerque.

He is survived by his wife, Maria, of Albuquerque; two sisters, Kathleen Hellstein of Sugar Creek, Mo., and Annabeth Tomure of St. Genevieve, Mo.; and a brother, Donald Delaney of Jefferson City, Mo.

Contributions may be made to the Center ofSouthwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

Alvin Dean Longfellow

Alvin Dean Longfellow, a Bayfield resident, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 73.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

No services are planned at this time.

Mr. Longfellow was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Lone Star, Kan. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for Northwest Paper Co. for 35 years and retired in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Dary Longfellow of Bayfield, and Randy Longfellow of Bayfield; three brothers, Delbert, Dennis and Lawrence Longfellow of Lawrence Kan.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
