Jackson Rupe

Jackson Rupe, a World War II veteran, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. He was 88.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services.

Mr. Rupe was born April 5, 1912 in Paradise, Mo. He was a member of the Paradise Christian Church.

He and his brother enlisted together in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Rupe was a precision machinist and retired from civil service at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. After retirement he moved to Durango and later to Mesa, Ariz.

He is survived by a daughter, Jacquelyn Blasco of Independence, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Jones of Grand Junction, Colo.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery.

Edwin F. 'Scorch' Scofield

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary for Edwin F. "Scorch" Scofield, a fisherman and hunter, who died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at his home in Ignacio because of a sudden illness. He was 66.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services. Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery in Durango. Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Scofield was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Durango. He graduated from Bayfield High School. His favorite fishing hole was at Lemon Reservoir. Mr. Scofield also enjoyed bowling and a good cigar. He will always be remembered for his good sense of humor.

He is survived his life-long companion Cleo Garcia and her daughter Pat Pacheco of Ignacio; one sister, Noreen Starbuck of Aztec; two brothers, David Miller of Leesburg, Va., and Ronnie Miller of Bayfield; an aunt and uncle; and a grandson, Robert Lopez of Ignacio.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Patrick W. Luter Cancer Center, 3801 North Main Ave., Durango CO. 81301.

Jean Elizabeth Rush Foster

Jean Elizabeth Rush Foster died Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Hospice of Metro Denver in Denver. She was 91.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Foster was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Palisade, Colo. She graduated from Grand Junction High School and attended Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction, Colo., for two years. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1931 with a bachelor’s degree in music and music education.

She married W. Walter Foster on June 25, 1933, in Denver. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Mrs. Foster lived in Durango from 1948 to 1968.

She also lived in Grand Junction, Greeley, Denver and Cameo, all in Colorado. She taught elementary school music at several schools, including in Durango from 1953 to 1954.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster co-owned Foster Office Supply, an office machines, equipment and supplies business in Durango from 1948 to 1968.

Mrs. Foster was an apartment manager in Durango from 1949 to 1968.

She was a member and choir member of the First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Durango. She was also the junior choir director at the First Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, W. Clayton Foster and Stanley R. Foster, both of Denver; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Nov. 4 at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Denver, with a private interment service at Montview Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Metro Denver, 425 S. Cherry St., Suite 700, Denver, CO 80246-1234.

Lorie Kay Sellers

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Church of Christ north of Cortez for Lorie Kay Sellers, who died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, in Durango after a battle with cancer. She was 40.

Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mancos.

Mrs. Sellers was born July 21, 1960, in Boulder, Colo. She was a resident of Cortez and a longtime area resident. She married J.R. Sellers on Feb. 14, 1980, in Bayfield.

Mrs. Sellers was a veterinary technician for several years, and worked primarily with Jerry Brown in Bayfield. She enjoyed doing seamstress work.

Survivors include her husband, J.R.; two daughters, Kate-lyn and Julia Sellers, both of Cortez; parents, Harvey and Mary Green of Durango; a sister, Mary Ann Graf of Mancos; a brother, John Green of Aztec, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lorie Kay Sellers Memorial Fund, c/o Southwest Colorado Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 3355, Durango, CO 81302.

Everett Virgil 'Scoop' Waddell

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Fort Lewis College Student Memorial Lounge for Everett Virgil "Scoop" Waddell, who died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Waddell was born March 15, 1934, in Beloit, Kan. He graduated from Durango High School in 1952 and entered the U.S. Air Force that year to serve in Korea. He returned to Durango in 1960.

Mr. Waddell married Sandi Schoser May 14, 1963, in Bloomfield, N.M. He worked for Burnett Construction before joining the staff at Fort Lewis College as supply officer and central store manager. He retired from Fort Lewis in 1996. Since then, he managed Florida Mosquito Control.

Mr. Waddell was a lifetime member of the Durango Gun Club and National Rifle Association. He ran the Junior Rifle Club for 20 years and taught hunter’s education for 32 years. He volunteered time to the deputy sheriffs and Fort Lewis College.

Survivors include his wife, Sandi, of Durango; two daughters, Tracie DeBoer of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Leslie Raines of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Sean Waddell of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jordan DeBoer, Tanner DeBoer, Emily Waddell and Cole Waddell; four sisters, Irene Ferdinando and Florence Baker, both of Durango, Dorothy Payson of Checotah, Okla., and Ruth Cammas of Eagle Rock, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Violet Marie Wells

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Durango for Violet Marie Wells, who died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, in Yucaipa, Calif. She was 68.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Wells was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Pawnee, Okla. She moved to the Durango area as a child and lived most of her life in Colorado.

Survivors include three sons, Orby Wells of Omaha, Neb., Gary Wells of Oregon and David Wells of Durango; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Bess Terrell of Bullhead City, Ariz.; six brothers, Duane Walker of Phoenix, Ariz., Clifford Walker of Westminster, Colo., Leroy Walker of Carlsbad, Calif., and Delbert Walker, Charles Walker and Ernest Walker, all of Durango; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to participate in a celebration of her life with a dinner to follow in the fellowship hall of the church.

John A. Estes

John A. Estes, formerly of Ignacio, Durango and Farmington, N.M., died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, in Visalia, Calif. He was 84.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Estes was born May 29, 1916, in Ignacio. He was raised and educated there and lived many years in the Durango area.

He married Callie Woolf in January 1937 and they lived most of their lives together in the Four Corners area.

Survivors include his wife, Callie; two daughters, Carolyn Fox of Franklinton, La., and Beckie Goodyear of Visalia, Calif.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were provided by Miller Memorial Chapel of Visalia, Calif., and burial was Oct. 28 at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba, Calif.

Carol Jean Trout

Carol Jean Trout died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at the LDS Hospital in Clearfield, Utah. She was 48.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Trout was born May 23, 1952. She married Terry J. Watts Nov. 26, 1971, in Littleton, Colo. They were later divorced.

She married Edgar L. Trout III on Feb. 11, 1983, in West Point.

She lived in Bayfield for 18 years and had lived in Clearfield for 25 years.

Mrs. Trout graduated from Bayfield High School. She was a member of the National Notary Association.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jeffrey C. Watts of Ogden, Utah, and J. Devin Watts of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Katherine T. Trout of Clearfield, Utah, and Heather L. Markus of Renton, Wash.; and two brothers, Donald Grush and Glenn Grush, both of Bayfield.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary. There was cremation.
