Laura Jane (Richards) Brown

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for Laura Jane (Richards) Brown, who died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, in Denver, Colo. She was 72.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Brown was born Dec. 8, 1927, on her family’s ranch northwest of Bayfield. On July 20, 1947, she married Roy Brown.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rebecca Lodge.

Survivors include her husband, Roy; a daughter, Linda Sue; a grandson, Brandon; two sisters, Esther Orr of Pagosa Springs, and Eileen Hammond of Thermopolis, Wyo.; a brother, Tom Richards of Pagosa Springs; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rhoda Kay (Larson) Bennett

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Arboles Baptist Church in Arboles for Rhoda Kay (Larson) Bennett, who died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, in Denver. She was 60.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Bennett was born May 4, 1940, in Albert Lea, Minn. After graduating from Albert Lea High, she attended St. Olaf College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She worked at hospitals in Denver, married Melvin C. Bennett and moved to Monte Vista, Colo., in 1969.

Mrs. Bennett was a Sargents school nurse. She worked at Monte Vista Community Hospital and later taught nursing classes at San Luis Area Vocational School in Alamosa, Colo. The Bennetts moved to Arboles on Navajo Lake in 1996.

Mrs. Bennett was involved with the Arboles Baptist Church, where she played the piano and organ and organized many church functions.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin C. Bennett; five children, Jennifer L. Kritsch of Bakersfield, Calif., Mark C. Bennett of Denver, John S. Bennett of Denver, Melodee L. Bergin of Grand Junction, Colo., and James S. Bennett of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Martha Wickberg of McMinnville, Ore., and Helen Scrabulis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arboles Baptist Church Building Fund, Arboles Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1692, Arboles, CO 81121.

Elsie Burch Thorne

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, November 1, at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Elsie (Burch) Thorne, who died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Valley View Home in Bayfield. She was 73.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Family and friends will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.

Mrs. Thorne was born May 27, 1927, in Ignacio and was a lifetime resident of the Bayfield-Ignacio area. She was a member of the Southern Ute Tribe.

After marrying Hoskie Thorne, the couple traveled extensively throughout the Four Corners for his job.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoskie, and by a son, Daniel.

Survivors include her daughter, Norma Thorne of Bayfield; a granddaughter, Charmayne Plesko of Bayfield; a grandson, Michael Plesko of Bayfield; three brothers, Everett Burch and Leonard Burch, both of Ignacio, and Anthony Burch of Fairbanks, Alaska; two sisters, Bertha Grove and Sunshine Smith, both of Ignacio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert C. (Bob) Flagg

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church of Durango for Robert C. (Bob) Flagg of Durango, who died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, following a stroke. He was 74.

Mr. Flagg retired from the Bendix-Honeywell Corporation, Kansas City, Mo., in 1988 after 30 years as a tool and die maker.

Upon retirement, Mr. Flagg and his wife, Barbara, moved to Durango where he was active in the Durango Masonic Lodge No. 46, Kansas City Scottish Rite and Al-Kaly Shrine. He was also active in the First United Methodist Church, the Emmaus Community and the Amateur Radio Club.

Mr. Flagg was a real estate broker and worked for Preferred Properties in Bayfield.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, James R. of Aurora, Charles E. of Ignacio; a daughter Carolyn Meurer of St. Charles, Mo., a sister, Doris Roepke of Bend, Ore.; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Flagg was buried in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 29. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Joe Alcario Enriquez

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Joe Alcario Enriquez, who died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Center, Colo. He was 82.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Enriquez was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Tiffany, Colo. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Enriquez retired from the logging industry where he drove logging trucks.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ida Enriquez; three daughters, Ruby Carrillo and Alyce Erwin, both of Durango, and Sally Granados of Center, Colo.; three sisters, Vivian Doyle of Denver, Mary Rocha of Brighton, Colo., and Della Chapin of Bayfield; four brothers, Phillip Enriquez of Ignacio, Ned Enriquez of Farmington, N.M., Joe P. Enriquez of Denver and Frank Enriquez of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Velma M. ‘Bunny’ Smith

Velma M. "Bunny" Smith died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at her home in Durango. She was 68.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Smith was born July 28, 1932, in Lindsborg, Kan. She married James R. Smith Jan. 13, 1950, in Yuma, Ariz. She lived in Durango for the past eight years.

Earlier in life, Mrs. Smith worked with an equestrian program for children with disabilities and was a reading tutor. She was active with the local cancer support group for the past six years.

Survivors include her husband, James R. Smith of Durango; three daughters, Laurie J. Anderson of Durango, Lindie S. Joy of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Sherrie L. Fragnoli of Palmer, Alaska.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Siegfried R. Widder

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Dec. 27 at Christ the King Lutheran Church for Siegfried R. Widder, who died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at The Valley Inn in Mancos. He was 86.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mr. Widder was born Oct. 26, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He married Iris Ward in 1937 in Queens, N.Y. He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Widder worked for the IBM Corporation for 35 years, and lived in Hicksville, N.Y., for an extended period of that time. He moved to Durango in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Widder.

Survivors include his son, Keith Widder of Durango; his daughter, Tavia Widder of Durango; and three granddaughters, Jessica Widder, Sunshine Widder and Bonnie Widder.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, P.O. Box 8766, Albuquerque, NM 87198-8766.

Stanley Edward Graves

Stanley Edward Graves died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. He was 90.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Graves was born Oct. 11, 1910, in Florence, Ark. He married Nancy Irene Hardin on May 3, 1942. She preceded him in death in 1993.

Mr. Graves served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific, and attained the rank of sergeant. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Dahl of Durango and Cecelia Fisher of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Lara Wardlaw of Warren, Ark.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Gregg Funeral Home in Monette, Ark., next week with burial at the Monette Cemetery.

Antonia Eve Torres

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 at the Arriola Cemetery for Antonia Eve Torres, an infant who died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center.

Antonia was born Dec. 25, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center.

Antonia is survived by her parents, Robert and Troylene Torres of Durango; two brothers, Robby and Ricky Torres, both of Durango; grandparents, Richard and Donna Bowling of Cortez, Cordy Atencio of Durango and Reyes Torres Sr. of Denver; two great-grandmothers, Marie Sharp of Arriola and Frances Grim of Denver; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
