Peggy Miller Elwell

Oct. 28, 1949 - Sept. 16, 1999

Peggy Miller Elwell of Lafayette died of natural causes Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Louisville. She was 49.

She was born Oct. 28, 1949, in Escanaba, Mich., to Eugene H. Olson and Ethel Schram Olson. She married William Clausen in 1968. They divorced. She married Tom Elwell on April 20, 1997.

Mrs. Elwell was a homemaker who enjoyed animals, antique furniture and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of Lafayette; her mother of Gladstone, Mich.; a son, William Clausen of Lafayette; a daughter, Jenny Clausen of Boulder; a stepson, Blake Elwell of Lafayette; and two sisters, Judy Umbreit of Milwaukee, Wis., and Jean Dahlgren of Neenah, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father on July 21, 1998; and a brother, Ricky Olson, on July 5, 1999.

No services will be held. A private cremation will be held.

Darrell Howe Mortuary of Lafayette is in charge of arrangements.

DELBERT OWEN BLACK

July 7, 1923 - Sept. 16, 1999

Delbert Owen Black of Boulder died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Boulder. He was 76.

A Boulder native, he was born July 7, 1923, to Jesse Randolph and Maude May Berg Black.

He married Virginia Royce Sept. 18, 1946, in Portland, Ore. She died in 1956.

Mr. Black graduated from Boulder High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marines, where he served from 1943 to'45.

During World War II, he participated in the Bonin Islands Operation, anti-submarine patrol in the Marcus Islands area, the on Japan, capture and occupation of Saipan, capture and occupation of Iwo Jima and the capture and occupation of Okinawa. During the war, he was a master technical sergeant in aviation.

In 1955, he moved to Seattle, and he started his own collection agency. He had the agency for 33 years then moved to Pueblo, in 1990 and to Boulder in 1999. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, flyfishing, biking and kayaking.

Mr. Black is survived by his son, Kenneth Owen Black of Louisville; his daughter, Kathryn Black Husted of Boulder; a sister, Nellie Black of Denver, and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Mountain Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be given to Hospice of Boulder County, 2825 Marine St., Boulder 80303, or the National Wildlife Federation, 8925 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Va. 22184.

J. RICHARD CHRISTOPHER

April 23, 1920 - Sept. 17, 1999

J. Richard Christopher of Boulder died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Boulder. He was 79.

He was born April 23, 1920, in Ouray to Harry Arnette Christopher and Jenny Fauber Christopher. He came to Boulder with his family when he was 2 years old. On March 16, 1942, he married Margaret Mullenix in Boulder. She died in November 1989.

Mr. Christopher was an accountant with the University of Colorado, primarily with the housing and athletic departments, until his retirement in 1989. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, and was sent to China. He attained the rank of first lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.

Mr. Christopher was a golfer and photographer. He was an avid CU Buffs fan, and was involved with the Boulder Junior Chamber of Commerce and American Diabetes Association. He belonged to St. John's Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his son, Stephen Christopher of Boulder; his daughter, Amy Gray of Lafayette; brother, C. Harry Christopher of Denver; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine St., Boulder.

Donations may be made to St. John's Memorial Fund or the American Diabetes Association, 2450 S. Downing St., Denver 80210.

Derek P. Lyske

Sept. 8, 1951 - Sept. 15, 1999

Derek P. Lyske of Santa Ana, Calif., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Longmont. He was 48.

Mr. Lyske was born Sept. 8, 1951, in Swindon, England, to William E. and Louise McCullagh Lyske. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1980, earning a high school diploma while in the service. He served in the United States and overseas as a member of the Combat Control teams. During that time, Mr. Lyske was twice a member of the U.S. Air Force winning teams in parachuting accuracy and style championship. He became a senior parachute instructor after leaving the Air Force.

He had lived in Boulder County since April 1999.

Mr. Lyske is survived by his father, William, of Santa Ana, his sister Anne Molloy of Blackburn, England, and a brother, Richard Lyske of Blackburn. His mother, Louise, proceeded him in death.

Private services were held.

Funeral services were arranged by Avalon Cremation and Funeral Service of Longmont.

Morris J. Smith

Sept. 10, 1913 - Sept. 17, 1999

Morris J. Smith of Katy, Texas, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at a Houston hospital. He was 86.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Grandby, Mo., to Charles Wesley and Gertrude Nunn Smith. He married Estel Mae Wood on Aug. 19, 1934. They lived in Boulder from 1957 to 1996. He was a machinist.

He is survived by four children, Loren Smith of California, Warren Smith of Boulder, Sybil Cochran of Katy, and Galen Smith of Longmont; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was proceeded in death by his wife in 1996, and his daughter, Nila Mae Smith Lies in 1953.

Visitation was held Saturday at Schmidt Funeral Home in Katy, and will be held again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, Kan. Interment will be private in Kansas.

Albert J. Stevens

Sept. 20, 1924 - Sept. 16, 1999

Albert J. Stevens of Lafayette died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Denver. He was 74.

He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Canfield near Erie to Julian and Demetrie Oast Stevens. He never married and lived most of his life in the Boulder County area. Mr. Stevens was a farmer.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

The last few years, he lived at Villa Assisted Living Center in Greeley.

He is survived by his niece, Peggy Stevens of Lyons, and nephews Verla Stevens, Denver, and Bob Stevens, Arvada. His three brothers, Paul, Elmer and Arthur Stevens, proceeded him in death.

Private services were held.

Richard G. Scherer

April 24, 1933 - Sept. 14, 1999

Richard G. Scherer of Longmont died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in Reston, Va. He was 66.

Scherer was born April 24, 1933, in St. Louis, Mo., to Phillip Scherer and Marie (Riesheis) Scherer. He married Joan Fleming on Sept. 1, 1956.

Mr. Scherer had worked for 40 years in publishing and marketing.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1955, magna cum laude. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Joan; three sons, James F. Scherer of Boulder, Tim M. Scherer of Herndon, Va., and Christopher J. Scherer of Brunswick, N.J.; a brother, John A Scherer of Westfield, N.J.; two sisters, Phyllis T. Krechel of Naples. Fl., and Patricia Handlan of Kirkwood, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., with Rev. D. Rocca officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Ind.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Franciscan Monastery Merrytown, Libertyville, Ill., 60048.

Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Ind., is handling the arrangements.

Albert J. Stevens

Sept. 20, 1924 - Sept. 16, 1999

Albert J. Stevens of Greeley, formerly of Lafayette, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Denver. He was 74.

He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Canfield near Erie to Julian and Demetrie Oast Stevens.

Mr. Stevens lived most of his life in the Boulder County area. He was a farmer.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He enjoyed walking.

He is survived by his niece, Peggy Smith of Lyons; and nephews Verla Stevens of Denver and Bob Stevens of Arvada; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Stevens, Elmer Stevens and Arthur Stevens.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 10203 South Boulder Road, Lafayette. Interment will be private.

William Edward Hulsizer

June 24, 1924 - Sept. 20, 1999

William Edward Hulsizer of Broomfield died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Avista Hospital in Louisville. He was 75.

He was born June 24, 1924, in Oswego, Kan., to George Hulsizer and Lily Whitney Hulsizer. He married Phyllis Zuker on Sept. 6, 1947, in Minneapolis, Kan.

Mr. Hulsizer worked as a landman for various oil companies.

He enjoyed poetry, hiking, skiing, bicycling and fly fishing. He graduated from Kansas State University and Tulsa Law School.

Survivors include his wife of Broomfield; three daughters, Janna Boccard of Broomfield, Joy Barrett of Littleton, and Jayme Weynand of Steamboat Springs; a sister, Helen Dunbar of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Richard Hulsizer of Texas, and two grandsons.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at The Church of the Holy Comforter on 1700 W. 10th Ave. in Broomfield, with the Rev. Bill Grissom officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Broomfield on Eagle St.

Jack R. Myers

Nov. 12, 1914 - Oct. 29, 1999

Jack R. Myers of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of Boulder, died Oct. 29, 1999, in Santa Cruz. He was 84.

He was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Omaha, Neb., to John R. Myers and Elizabeth Wendt Myers. He married Phyllis H. Pierce on Dec. 4, 1935, in Omaha, Neb. She died on Dec. 14, 1982.

Mr. Myers worked for the Daily Camera as a linotype operator from 1951 to 1981.

He graduated from Tech High School in Omaha, Neb. He lived in Boulder from 1951 to 1981. He was a member of Masons Boulder Lodge No. 45 and was past master of it.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Myers of Lafayette; two sons, Robert Myers of Milpitas, Calif., and Wood Myers of Denver; a sister, Dotty Brown of Covington, La.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred.

The Neptune Society of San Jose, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.
