Leroy Franklin Higgs
September 20, 1935 - March 19, 2004
DELTA - Delta resident, Leroy F. Higgs, died Friday, March 19, 2004 at his home. He was 68.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 23rd at the Calvary Baptist Church in Delta. Pastor Roger Odegard will preside. Services will conclude at the church.
Leroy Franklin Higgs was born September 20, 1935 in Delta, Colorado to the late Ross and Pearl (Turner) Higgs. He spent his childhood and attended schools in Delta.
On February 11, 1954 in Delta, Colorado, Leroy was joined in marriage to Velma Dennis. She survives.
Mr. Higgs had been a uranium miner. He and Velma had previously resided in Nevada, Utah and Grand Junction. They moved to Delta in 1996.
Leroy was a life member of the North American Hunting Club. His interests included hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and old cars. He was a proud man who was extremely devoted to his entire family. He will be missed by all of them.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Velma Higgs of Delta; one daughter, Synthia Higgs of Grand Junction, CO; three sons and their wives, Jim and Hope Higgs of Delta, Ben and Melody Higgs of Grand Junction and Bill and Mary Higgs of Delta; three sisters, Pat Belport and husband Ray of Denver, Mary Ethel Peeler of Missouri and Ida Klindera of Denver; five brothers: William Higgs and wife Anna, Tommy Higgs, Butch Higgs and wife Carol, Kenny Higgs and Pearl Ross Higgs, all of Grand Junction. He is further survived by twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Angelina Mautz
November 29, 1923 - March 18, 2004
ECKERT - Longtime Eckert resident, Angelina Mautz, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado She was 80.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd at 11:00 a.m., at Evergreen Cemetery in Carbondale, Colorado. Father Tom McCormick will preside.
Angelina Gianinetti was born on November 29, 1923 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to the late Ben and Alphonsine (Diemoz) Gianinetti. She spent her childhood growing up on the family farm north of Carbondale. After high school, she attended Community Business College in Denver.
In 1943, in Aspen, Colorado, Angelina married Joe Mautz. They resided on the Mautz Ranch in Aspen until 1949, when they purchased the Twin Meadows Ranch on the Crystal River. They raised two sons, Joe and Larry. In 1991, Joe passed away and Angelina moved to Cedaredge, where she continued to be involved in the farm community.
Survivors include her companion, Jack Morrell of Eckert, CO; two sons: Larry Mautz and wife Connie of Hotchkiss, CO and Joe Mautz and wife Penny of Olathe, CO; one brother, Ernest Gianinetti and wife Carol of Carbondale, CO; and one sister, Uvalina Friemel and husband Toby of Cedaredge, CO. She is further survived by six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Ben Gianinetti, Jr.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Arthur Fontana
February 8, 1917 - March 17, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Hotchkiss resident, Arthur Fontana, passed away on March 17, 2004 at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado. He was 87.
A graveside memorial service for family and friends is planned for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Father Bill Nelson will officiate.
Arthur Fontana was born on February 8, 1917 to the late Abramo and Virginia (Cheisi) Fontana in Cambria, Wyoming. He spent his childhood and graduated from high school in Florence, Colorado.
On January 1, 1948 in Raton, New Mexico, Arthur married the love of his life Letha Wolfenbarger. She survives. They have resided in Hotchkiss, Colorado since 1959.
Arthur was a coal miner and a carpenter. He had been a member of the United Mine Workers Association for sixty - seven years, and a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for fifty - seven years. Arthur enjoyed polka music, playing the accordion and just “tinkering.”
Those grateful to have shared in Arthur’s life are his wife Letha Fontana of Hotchkiss, CO; daughter Sherrie Wilkening and husband Larry of Hotchkiss, CO; brother Robert Fontana and wife Josephine of Reno, NV; half brother Charlie Guerri of Ontario, OR; step brother Steve Carolla and wife Tosca of Sparks, NV; three sisters: Adeline Tedesco and husband Bill of Florence, CO, Josephine Owens and husband Jerry of Superior, CO and Ester Knight and husband Al of Pueblo, CO. Arthur is further survived by five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to North Fork Ambulance Association , P.O. Box 127, Hotchkiss, Colorado, 81419.

Mary Lou Stein
February 25, 1939 - March 15, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Longtime resident, Mary Lou Stein, died on Monday, March 15, 2004, at Horizon’ Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. She was 65.
Memorial services are planned for a later date.
Mary Lou Costello was born on February 25, 1939, to John Michael and Clara Mardel (Roberts) Costello in Denver, Colorado. She graduated from San Fernando High School in San Fernando, California. She furthered her education by taking accounting classes through ICS.
Mary Lou married Chuck Stein on January 14, 1956, in LaCrescenta, California. They had celebrated forty - eight years of marriage this past January. He survives.
The Steins moved from Granada Hills, California, in 1970, to Cedaredge. Mary Lou became the Business Manager for the Delta County Independent in 1972. She became the Town Clerk at the Cedaredge Town Hall in 1975. She then became the Business Manager for Horizon’s Care Center at Eckert for several years before moving back to the Cedaredge Town Hall as their Financial Clerk. She retired from this position in September, 2002.
Mary Lou loved to work outside doing gardening. She enjoyed camping and fishing. She was quite a stamp collector and belonged to the Stamp Club in Delta, Colorado.
Those grateful to have shared in Mary Lou’s life include her husband, Chuck, of Cedaredge, CO; a son, Chuck Stein, Jr. and his wife Laurie of Grand Junction, CO; two daughters: Bonnie Briscoe and her husband Steve of Cory, CO and Linda Low and her husband Fred of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Laura “Tommie” York of Evanston, WY; a half sister, Rita “Sissy” Mace of Republic, MO; two half - brothers: Art “Jackie” Kammerlohr of Warrensburg, MO and Bob “Bobby” Kammerlohr of Springfield, MO. She is further survived by seven grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary Lou to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.

Aaron Abram Austin
November 11, 1946 - March 11, 2004
DELTA - Delta resident, Aaron Austin, died on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, as the result of an automobile accident in rural Delta. He was 58.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the Cory Cemetery in Cory, Colorado.
Aaron Abram Austin was born on November 11, 1946, to Uhlan C. and Betty L. (Williams) Austin in Delta, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Delta and graduated from Delta High School in 1965. He continued his education at CSU at Fort Collins, Colorado. He resided in Delta, Montrose, and San Miguel counties. He spent eight years at Cuyama, California, before moving back to Delta four years ago.
Aaron married Dixie Perkins. This marriage was later dissolved. He then married Bonnie Skelton, and this marriage ended also.
Aaron was truly a cowboy from his boots to the top of his hat. He was featured on Coors ads as an original cowboy and he was also pictured on postcards as a cowboy. Aaron loved animals, ranching, and dancing. He especially loved his family and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a people person and was known and loved by those he came in contact with.
Those grateful to have shared in Aaron’s life include his father, Uhlan Austin of Delta, CO; his son, Dustin Austin of Grand Junction, CO; three daughters: Dulcie Newland of Grand Junction, CO, Kitty Luna and her husband Gilbert of Graham, WA, and Chamise Austin of Farmington, NM; a brother, Arlin Austin of Delta, CO; and a sister, Varra Sue Myers and her husband Leland of Delta, CO. He is further survived by four grandchildren: Bobby Newland of Grand Junction, CO, Brent Newland of Thornton, CO, Destiny Austin of Grand Junction, CO, and Ava Luna of Graham, WA.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Austin.

Margaretta G. Chesnik
February 9, 1924 - March 14, 2004
SOMERSET - Longtime Somerset resident, Margaretta G. Chesnik, died on Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Horizon’s Health Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. She was 80.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Ron Wist will officiate.
Margaretta Grace Schroder was born on February 9, 1924, to Charles Frederick “Fred” and Goldie Elizabeth (Connell) Schroder in Fort Morgan, Colorado. She spent her early childhood in the Fort Morgan area where her father farmed. Later, the family moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where her father worked on the famous Trail Ridge Road. Her Mom cooked for the road crews.
When Margaretta was about 12 years old, she and her Mom moved to the western slope of Colorado, where she attended school in Paonia.
Margaretta was united in marriage to Matt Chesnik, Jr. on December 29, 1945. The couple had six children and made their home in Somerset, Colorado, where Margaretta lived until shortly before her death.
Matt died on February 4, 1989, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Margaretta loved her yard, Christmas, baseball games, her clubs, her friends, and most of all supporting her children and grandchildren. Margaretta was very friendly and out - going. She had various pets through the years that she enjoyed. Margaretta enjoyed working at the local packing shed until the age of 74 years. She was always a staunch supporter of local athletic events.
Those grateful to have been a part of Margaretta’a life include three daughters: Korgretta Kay Gines of Roosevelt, UT, Heidi Elizabeth deGraffenried and husband Ronald of Paonia, CO and Debra Jeanne Stelmack of Palisade, CO; three sons: Charles Matthew Chesnik and his wife Janice, Max Paul Chesnik and his wife Kristin, and William Louis Chesnik and his wife Stephanie all of Paonia, CO; one sister, Frankye Wist and her husband Ron of Paonia, CO. She is further survived by fifteen grandchildren and nine great - grandchildren; two aunts: Ann Connell of Paonia, CO and Ila Connell of Hotchkiss, CO; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Margaretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Matt; and one brother, James Brezonick.
She will be sadly missed by all of her family and her many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Margaretta, c/o Fredrica Morris, 14545 Hwy 65, Eckert, CO 81418.

Albertha Emmons
May 10, 1929 - March 14, 2004
PAONIA - Former longtime Paonia resident, Albertha F. Emmons died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was 74.
A funeral service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 18th at the Bible Center Church in Paonia. Pastor Paul Millermon will preside. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.
Albertha Frances Wiley was born May 10, 1929 in Grand Junction, Colorado to the late Albert and Frances (Wade) Wiley.
She spent her childhood in Paonia. During school Albertha worked at the Co - op Telephone Company in Paonia. She also packed fruit at the Carol Wade Packing Shed. Following graduation from Paonia High School in 1947, she worked at Union Supply Company at Dragerton, Utah.
On May 7, 1948 in Dragerton, Utah, Albertha was joined in marriage to Boyd E. Emmons. Boyd and Albertha built their home together in Paonia and on August 15, 1999, Boyd passed away. Following Boyd’s passing, Albertha moved to Clifton, Colorado where she resided at the time of her death.
Mrs. Emmons attended the Bible Center Church in Paonia. She was also a former member of TOPS and the River View Extension Club. She loved her family dearly.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Metli and husband Brian of Grand Junction, CO; one sister, Norma Jean “Jeanie” McCormick of Holly, CO; and one brother, Hugh Wiley and wife Ahlean of Englewood, CO. She is further survived by two grandsons: Gregory Daniel of Grand Junction and Steven Daniel of Denver; and one great granddaughter, Britnee Daniel of Crofton, MD.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Wiley.
Memorials may be made to the Bible Center Church, 1117 3rd St., Paonia, CO 81428.

Joyce Faye Calhoun
August 23, 1943 - March 12, 2004
PARADOX - Joyce Faye Calhoun died on Friday, March 12, 2004, at her residence in Paradox. She was 60.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 17th, at the Paradox Community Church (the Red Church) in Paradox, with Paul Redd conducting the service. Burial will follow at the Paradox Cemetery, Paradox, CO.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Paradox Ambulance fund P. O. Box 393, Paradox, CO 81429.
Joyce Faye Hendrickson was born on August 23, 1943 to Shell and Joan (Colombo) Hendrickson in Nucla, Colorado.
Joyce attended schools in Nucla and graduated from Nucla High in 1961.
Joyce married the love of her life William A. “Bill” Calhoun on December 24, 1960 at Nucla, Colorado. They were married for 43 years.
Joyce lived in the west end for most of her life. From 1967 to 1972 she lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Joyce loved her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Nucla Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed craft work and taking photos with her digital camera and then running them off on the printer.
Joyce volunteered at the Nucla - Naturita food bank and enjoyed delivering food boxes to those folks that were unable to come into the food bank to pick up their boxes.
Those grateful to have been a special part of Joyce’s life include her husband: William A. “Bill” Calhoun; her three daughters and their husbands: Lori and Dave Worix of Beckley, West Virginia., Shelley and Leroy Archer, and Tonya and Joe Gabardi of Nucla, CO; her two sons and their wive’s: Calvin and Leigh - Anne Calhoun of Redvale, CO, and Rusty and Bobbie Calhoun of Naturita, CO; her sister and her husband: Debbie and Kent Irish of Paradox, two brothers: Darrell Hendrickson of Nucla, and John and Sallie Hendrickson of Paradox. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Carl and an infant brother.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory, Delta, Colorado.

Edward G. Cleary
September 25, 1926 - March 10, 2004
CRAWFORD - On a beautiful spring afternoon Edward Cleary was enjoying the sunshine and the outdoors he had come to love at his Crawford residence when he passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2004. He was 77.
No services are planned.
Edward G. Cleary was born on September 25, 1926, to Edward G. and Mary Louise (Larson) Cleary in Santa Paulo, California. He spent his childhood there and graduated from the Santa Paulo High School. He attended the Air Force Cadet Program in Ashland, Oregon. He spent twenty years in Southern, Colorado, and then moved to Mesa, Arizona, for the next twenty years. He has resided in Crawford for the past six years.
Edward married Jobyna Moore on June 27, 1953, in Seattle, Washington. She survives.
Mr. Cleary spent twenty years in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot and retired as a Major. Edward was a cartoonist. He originated the “Laughin’ Place Cartoon Postcards,” which have been in existence for over twenty - one years. He enjoyed western art, and also building airplanes and automobiles. His grandchildren were the love of his life.
Those grateful to have shared in Edward’s life include his wife of fifty years, Joby, of Crawford, CO; a son, Brian Cleary and his wife Vicki of Ritchfield, CT; three daughters: Bridget Heeringa and her husband Steve of Spring Lake, MI, Merry O’Cleary of Seattle, WA, and Cynthia Fitchlee and her husband Jeff of Crawford, CO; a brother, Robert Cleary and his wife Dorothy of Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He is further survived by five grandchildren: Lauren, Kristopher, Lea, Elisa, and Michael; and by two step - grandchildren: Ryan and Kelli.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary Cleary.
