Maxine E. Nelson

Maxine E. Nelson, 73, of Estes Park died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo.

Nelson was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Moline, Ill., to Glenn M. and Edna (Bezner) Rohrbach.

She graduated from Moline High School and attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., for two years, where she studied business.

During high school she worked at IBM in Moline. Prior to her marriage, she had worked at Moline Daily Dispatch in the society department.

She married George "Bud" Nelson on Sept. 10, 1950, in Moline, Ill., at the First Congregational Church.

She was a previous resident of Moline, Ill.; Des Moines, Iowa; Ottumwa, Iowa; and had lived in Estes Park since Nov. 4, 1987.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Estes Park, where she served on a number of committees. She was currently a member and president of the Estes Park Villagers, past president of the Chamber Resort Ambassadors Club, and a past board member of the Estes Park Medical Center. She was also active in the Friendship Force (Rocky Mountain Chapter).

Nelson enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland. She had also been to Venezuela, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium and England.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, George "Bud" Nelson of Estes Park; sons Steven K. Nelson and his wife Deborah of Mesa, Ariz., Thomas A. Nelson and his wife Jennifer of Kansas City, Mo., and Eric G. Nelson of Port Townsend, Wash.; brothers James H. Rohrbach of Moline, Ill., and John M. Rohrbach of Marietta, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church. Rev. J. Wesley Summers will officiate.

Leonard Benjamin Poirier

Leonard Benjamin Poirier, 78, of Littleton, Colo., a retired independent insurance agent, died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002.

Poirier served in the U.S. Navy from June 1943 to Feb. 1946, aboard the USS Lexington, as a quartermaster second class during WWII in the South Pacific.

He also served in the Navy Reserve from Feb. 1947 to 1952. During this time he was recalled for Korea. He served aboard the USS Miller from March 1951 to February 1952. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on Feb. 14, 1952.

Born in Duluth, Minn. Poirier married Mary Ann Trunda in the Sacred Heart Church of Pullman in 1948 and later graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc.

After moving to Littleton in 1967, he founded the Bond Agency of Estes Park in 1975. In 1986 he sold his agency and semi-retired.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann; children Kathy, Dennis, Thomas, Jill and Michael; brother Edward Poirier of Duluth, Minn. and nine grandchildren.

A service will be held at St. Maryís Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. Interment will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. and, a reception will follow that at the church.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Rosemary Conklin

Rosemary Conklin, 85, of Estes Park, died on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Prospect Park Living Center.

Conklin was born on Oct. 16, 1917, in Coatsburg, Ill., to Clifford I. and Leona B. (Bellport) Tripp.

She grew up in Boulder and Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School. She received her bachelorís degree in elementary education from Colorado State College of Education (which became UNC in 1939) in Greeley in 1938.

She taught in the Fort Morgan School District for two and a half years.

She married William W. Conklin on April 25, 1942, in Sterling. They resided for over 25 years in Denver before retiring to Estes Park.

Conklin was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Conklin in 1989, her son James Conklin, her parents and two sisters.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Conklin of Golden, Colo.; sons William Conklin of Denver and John Conklin of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; brother Larry Tripp of Corvallis, Ore.; and four granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at Prospect Park Living Center.

Michael Dustin Lockwood

Michael Dustin Lockwood, 46, died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002.

He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched through his music, creativity and sense of humor.

Survivors include his longtime companion Jim Daly of Norman, Okla., parents Norma and Chuck Lockwood of Estes Park; brother Scotty Lockwood of Estes Park; sister Vickie Robinette and her family of Texarkana, Texas; his former wife Anita Lockwood and their children Eric, Todd and Carrie of Westminster, Colo.; and grandfather Dwight Lockwood of Longmont, Colo.

Services were held on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Heritage Community Bible Church of Westminster, Colo.

Viola Maxine Hertzler

Viola Maxine Hertzler, 87, of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Oklahoma.

Hertzler was born on Feb. 23, 1915, in Aline, Okla., to Josiah and Nola Sackett. On Jan. 1, 1937, she married Jay Hertzler in Aline where they farmed and raised a family.

She served the Aline community many years as a leader in 4-H and Methodist church activities.

She completed her college education by joining her children at Northwestern State College and received a degree in English and home economics in 1961, followed by years of teaching in area high schools.

In 1972 she retired with her husband to Estes Park, where for the next 25 years they hiked numerous trails in Rocky Mountain National Park, traveled throughout the world, and enjoyed hosting friends and family in their home.

She was a founding member of the United Methodist Church of Estes Park and spent years as a volunteer in the Hospital Guild and other community organizations.

Hertzlerís life-long interests included gardening, bird-watching, ceramics, pottery, and books.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Survivors include her sister Evelyn Shorter of Alamogordo, N.M.; four children, Donald Hertzler of Weatherford, Okla., Barbara Powell of Jackson, Miss., Phyllis Robertson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Linda Hertzler-Crum of Weatherford, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Diane Anderson of Ponca City, Okla., Donna Sylvester of Drumwright, Okla., Becky Powell of Santa Barbara, Calif., Chris Powell of Cleveland, Miss., Greg Powell of Jackson, Miss., Jennifer Bukralia of Spearfish S.D., and Michael McKinney of Stillwater, Okla.; four great-grandchildren; and three nephews. She was American mother to Salman Siddiqi of Glencoe, Md.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Contributions may be made to United Methodist Missions or the American Heart Association.

Elsie Margaret McFarland

Elsie Margaret (Laity) McFarland, 93, of San Antonio, Texas, a former resident of Pinewood Springs, died on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in San Antonio, Texas.

McFarland was born on Oct. 23, 1911, in Kewanee, Ill., to Richard Thomas Laity and Nellie Emalline (Schoonover) Laity.

On June 22, 1938, she married John Z. McFarland in Maryland.

She graduated from Temple University where she received her masterís degree. She worked as a biology professor at Colorado Womenís College in Denver, Centenary College of Shreveport, La., and Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.

She retired to Pinewood Springs in the 1960s where she enjoyed wildlife and the outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her daughter Marjorie McFarland of San Antonio, Texas; son, John McFarland IV, M.D. of Moran, Wyo.; sister Dorothy Ann McClure of Lewisburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeane, Janet, Eric and Paul; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Hannah, Jack, Katie, Olivia and Austin.

Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Pinewood Springs Community Church with Pastor Peter Vanderveen officiating. A reception will follow.

Inurnment will take place at 2 p.m. at the Longmont Foothills Garden of Memory in Longmont, Colo.

William E. "Bill" Robinson, Jr.

William E. "Bill" Robinson, Jr., 75, of Estes Park, died on Sunday, March 8, 2003, at the Estes Park Medical Center.

Robinson was born on June 22, 1927, in Denver, Colo., to William E. Robinson, Sr. and Gertrude (Busch) Robinson.

He was raised in Denver and graduated from East High School in 1945.

He went on to graduate from Colorado State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

For many years he lived in Estes Park and worked at Art Cardís Livery on West Elkhorn Ave. before he joined the United States Army in 1945.

He was stationed in Aberdeen and was a member of the First Cavalry, detached service, making overseas trips to repair and service weaponry in Germany and Italy.

He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega.

In 1954, he married Fannye Kingston in Wickenburg, Ariz.

The couple moved to Estes Park where they owned and operated liveries at Fall River Lodge, Steads Ranch and the Y.M.C.A. of the Rockies ó Estes Park Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife Fannye, who died on Oct. 25, 2000.

Survivors include his sister-in-law Virginia Haug of Alamogordo, N.M.; niece Trudy Dever Yeros and her daughters Katie Williams and Alexandra Yeros.

Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be scattered in a favorite place of his.

No services are planned.

Earl S. Haugen

Earl S. Haugen, 79, a former resident of Estes Park, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at his home in Fort Collins, Colo.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at Our Saviourís Lutheran Church, 2000 S. Lemay in Fort Collins.

Evelyn J. Johnson

Evelyn J. Johnson, 81, of Fountain of the Sun Ariz., died Feb. 14, 2003 in Mesa, Ariz.

Johnson had been a Fountain of the Sun, resident since 1995. Prior to moving to Arizona, she had worked in the public utility and transportation fields and was retired from Golden Van Lines in Longmont, Colo.

Johnson was a charter member of the Estes Park Order of the Eastern Star.

She married Clifford Johnson on Aug. 6, 1939, in Belleville, Kan. The couple spent most of their adult lives in Colorado.

She is survived by her husband Clifford.

Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care was in charge of arrangements.
