Darin G. Ortiz
October 24, 1971 - April 20, 2004
PAONIA - Lifelong Paonia resident, Darin Ortiz passed away on, Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at the North Fork Medical Clinic in Paonia. He was 32.
A graveside memorial service for Darin is planned for 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 26, 2004 at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Paonia, Colorado. Randall Small will officiate.
Darin G. Ortiz was born on October 24, 1971 in Delta, Colorado to Gene and Marilyn (Emmons) Ortiz. He spent his childhood in Paonia and graduated from Paonia High School in 1991.
Darin enjoyed drawing, collecting trains and transformers and riding his scooter around town to meet people. He also loved spending time with his family especially his nieces and nephews.
Those grateful to have shared in Darin’s life are his parents, Gene and Marilyn Ortiz of Paonia, CO; paternal grandmother Ermalinda Ortiz of Paonia, CO; brother Shawn Ortiz and his wife Lori of Colorado Springs, CO; three sisters, Kathryn Bush and husband Bill of Fruita, CO; Nicole Barela and husband Joseph of Montrose, CO; and Samantha Ortiz of Paonia, CO; two nieces, Courtney Bush and Angel Barela; four nephews, Orion and Michael Ortiz, Chris Barela and Tony Barela. Darin is further survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Hazel M. Chapman
Sept. 4, 1931 - April 16, 2004
GRAND JUNCTION - Former Longtime North Fork Valley resident, Hazel M. Chapman, died Friday, April 16, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was 72.
A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., at the Crawford Community United Methodist Church. Pastors Scott Stark, James Gall and Tom Helmick will preside. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Crawford.
Hazel Marie Tattershall was born on September 4, 1931 in Canon City, Colorado to the late Verl and Mabel I. (Hafer) Tattershall. She spent her childhood in Eastern Colorado where she also attended school. Hazel continued her education graduating from the first LPN class at the Delta - Montrose Nursing School in Delta, Colorado, in 1970.
On February 4, 1947 in Syracuse, Kansas, Hazel married Charles “Bill” Chapman. He preceded her in death after 52 years of marriage on August 26, 1998 in Grand Junction.
Hazel had worked for several years at the Ladies Correctional Facility in Canon City in the infirmary as a nurse and later became a correctional officer there. She spent many years in the North Fork area before moving to Grand Junction in 1986. She then moved to Rangely, Colorado in February of 2000, having resided there until the time of her death. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and raising flower and vegetable gardens. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her only great grandchild.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Glen Filener of Rangely, CO and Linda and Dick Scott of Denver; two sisters, Anna DeCamp and husband Larry of Fruita, CO and Nancy Downs of Idaho; three brothers and their wives, Lee and Esther Tattershall of Fruita, CO, Ben and Joyce Tattershall of Steamboat Springs, CO and Jim and Judy Tattershall of Grand Junction. Hazel is further survived by five grandchildren and one great grandson.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Wilkenson.
Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Tony Barela
January 30, 1910 - April 16, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Longtime North Fork area resident, Tony Barela, passed away, Friday, April 16, 2004 at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 94.
A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20th between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m., at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. James Gall will preside. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery with members of the U.M.W.A #6417 and members of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807 performing graveside rites.
Pablo Antonio “Tony” Barela was born on January 30, 1910 in Antonito, CO to the late Jose S. and Carmelita (Cordova) Barela. He spent his childhood in the San Luis Valley and attended school at the Emerson School in Grand Junction.
Tony married Paula M. Gonzales on March 5, 1932 in Alamosa, Colorado. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1997 in Hotchkiss.
Mr. Barela was a coal miner at the Bowie Mine for 70 years. He retired in 1970. He has resided in Hotchkiss for the past 32 years, having lived in Bowie for 25 years prior to that. He attended the Paonia Christian Church and was a member of the U.M.W.A #6417, the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807 and the Sociedad Proteccion Mutia de Trabajadores Unidos in Antonito, Colorado. His interests included fly fishing, yard work, playing bingo and hugging the ladies.
Survivors include six daughters: Priscilla Chacon, of Alamosa, CO, Joan Dove and husband Orlan of Grand Junction, Neoma Martin and husband Dawayne of Grand Junction, Patricia Meadows and husband Phillip, of Oakhurst, CA, Sharon Kirkpatrick and husband Kirk of Hotchkiss and Denise Mitchell and husband Brad of Kansas; a daughter - in - law, Donna Barela of Sandy, UT; one sister, Tillie Osckle of Denver; 17 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 7 ˝ great great grandchildren. Tony is further survived by several half brothers and sisters.
Along with his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, Rudy L. Barela; one son - in - law, Albert Chacon; and one brother - in - law, Joe Osckle.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 127, Hotchkiss, CO 81419 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Louise P. Hilke
March 25, 1907 - April 14, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Lifelong Surface Creek resident, Louise P. Hilke, passed away on April 14, 2004, at Horizon’s Health Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. She was 97.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge. A funeral service is planned for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 17th, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge. James Gall will officiate. Rites will be performed by the Elberta Rebekah Lodge #106. Burial will follow at the Cedaredge Cemetery.
Louise P. Buzzard was born on March 25, 1907, to the late Charlie Earl and Nora Isabel (Trickle) Buzzard in Harts Basin, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Harts Basin, Colby Canyon, and Dry Creek Basin. Louise attended Delta County schools. She had been a resident of Cedaredge for forty years and had moved to Eckert eight months ago. Prior to living in Cedaredge, Louise had been a resident of Crest City, California, as well as Nevado, California.
Louise married William Henry Rhoades who died at Eckert, Colorado, in 1936. She then married Bert Hilke. He also preceded her in death.
Louise, a homemaker, also worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Rev. Joan Uda baptized Louise two years ago and she became a member of the Cedaredge United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Cedaredge Elberta Rebekah Lodge # 106, Birthday Club, the Grand Mesa V.F.W. Post #9221 Ladies Auxiliary, Cedar Mesa Club, and the Pinochle Club. She was a life long member of the Democratic Ladies Society of Delta County. Louise enjoyed crafts, sewing, and planting a vegetable garden. She took great pride in her beautiful rose garden.
Those grateful to have shared in Louise’s life are two daughters: Lorraine Crandall and her husband Stanley of Petaluma, CA, and Billie Bowen and her husband Vic of Cedaredge, CO; and a sister, Georgia Meyers and her husband Harold of Grand Junction, CO. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, seventeen great - grandchildren, and nine great - great - grandchildren.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Charlie Buzzard; a sister, Ida Cook; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made in Louise’s memory to the Grand Mesa V.F.W. Post #9221 Ladies Auxiliary, c/o June Balster, 20645 Del Ray Dr, Eckert, CO 81418, or the Elberta Rebekah Lodge #106, P.O. Box 145, Cedaredge, Co 81413.

Shirley Lee Spinelli
February 14, 1970 - April 11, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Cedaredge resident, Shirley L. Spinelli, died at her residence in Cedaredge on April 11, 2004. She was 34.
A visitation for family and friends to share special memories of Shirley will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado.
Shirley Lee Spinelli was born on February 14, 1970, to Thomas G. and Minnie Fern (Myers) Spinelli in Phoenix, Arizona. She spent her childhood in Long Beach, California. Her family moved to Cedaredge, Colorado, when she was ten years old. Shirley loved to write poetry. Her true passion and the love of her life were her four sons.
Those grateful to have been a part of Shirley’s life include her four sons: Michael, Jesse, Ryan, and Joey Stream of Huntington, Utah; her fiance’, Jeff O’Donnell of Cedaredge, CO; four brothers: Nathan Stanbery of Golden Valley, AZ, Leslie Stanbery of Castaic, CA, John Spinelli of Grand Junction, CO, and Richard Spinelli of Long Beach, CA; two sisters: Linda Wilcox and her husband Dave, and Nancy McWilliams and her husband Chris all of Delta, CO. She is further survived by seven nephews and five nieces; three great - nieces and two great - nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to The Center for Mental Health, 195 Stafford Ln., Delta, CO 81416.

Erwin K. “Buck” Blackledge
November 28, 1922 - April 11, 2004
MONTROSE - Former longtime Cedaredge resident, Erwin K. “Buck” Blackledge, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the San Juan Living Center in Montrose. He was 81.
Private services will be held at a later time.
Erwin K. Blackledge was born on November 28, 1922, in Moline, Illinois. He spent his childhood in Moline and graduated from Moline High School on June 3, 1947. He lived in several different states during his lifetime. He spent thirteen years in Aspen, Colorado, before moving to Cedaredge, where he spent twenty - five years. In October of 2003, he and his wife moved to Montrose.
Buck married Della Florene Toby on September 26, 1998, in Cedaredge, Colorado. She survives.
Mr. Blackledge was a carpenter by trade and worked in construction projects during his lifetime. He served his country in the United States Navy. Buck belonged to the Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church while living in Cedaredge, and was currently attending the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose. Buck belonged to the Grand Mesa VFW Post #9221 in Cedaredge and the Eagles Lodge in Grand Junction. His interests included woodworking and custom cabinetry, hunting, and fishing.
Those grateful to have shared in Buck’s life include his wife, Della Blackledge of Montrose, CO; two sons: Erwin “Tony” Blackledge, Jr. and his wife Linda of Sacramento, CA and Gordon Blackledge of Illinois.
He is further survived by a second cousin, Sue Rice and her husband Jay of Maple Grove, MN, and special friends, Bob Blackledge and his wife Karen.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

George M. McAfee
January 6, 1911 - April 12, 2004
PAONIA - George M. McAfee, a resident of Paonia, Colorado, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at the Paonia Care and Rehab Center. He was 93.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 19th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia, Colorado. Pastor Larry Johnson will preside. Services will conclude at the chapel.
George Melvin McAfee was born January 6, 1911, in Longmont, Colorado, to the late John and Pearl (Potter) McAfee. He spent his childhood and attended school in Erie, Colorado.
George married Viola Lehto on February 13, 1933, in Estes Park, Colorado. She preceded him in death on March 17, 1979, in Oregon City, Oregon.
Mr. McAfee lived in Erie, Colorado, before moving to Klamath Falls, Oregon, in 1979. He then returned to Colorado in 1999, making his home in Paonia. He was a member of the Labor’s Union Local #320 in Portland, Oregon. His interests included ranching, fishing, gardening and horses.
Survivors include three daughters: Lucille Buhr and husband John of Paonia, Patricia Pitts of Paonia, and Karen Cottrell and husband Larry of Klamath Falls, OR; two sons: George K. McAfee and wife Diana of Santa Maria, CA, and Keith McAfee and wife Kay of Oceanside, CA; one sister, Netta McKeehan of Erie, CO; one brother, Wayne McAfee and wife Thelma of Yuma, AZ; and a sister - in - law, Rose McAfee of Erie, CO. He is furthers survived by eight grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and several great - great grandchildren.
Along with his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Wayne McAfee; one sister, Myria McMillan; two brothers: Max and Walter McAfee and a grandson, Harlan Lee Pitts.
Memorials may be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053.

Frances E. Jacobs
December 31, 1921 - April 2, 2004
OLATHE - Lifetime resident of Olathe, Colorado, Frances E. Jacobs, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at her home. She was 82.
A graveside memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 7th at the Olathe Cemetery. Pastor John Mocko will preside.
Frances Ellen Goddard was born on December 31, 1921, in Olathe, Colorado, to the late Bertram C. and Lois Alta (Mattsen) Goddard. She graduated from Olathe High School in 1939.
On March 7, 1942, in Raton, New Mexico, Frances was joined in marriage to Samuel Jacobs. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1991, in Olathe.
Prior to retirement in 1976, Frances had been a postal clerk in Olathe for over 20 years, retiring as Post Master. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Olathe. Frances was a past State President of the Postal Workers Union and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Her interests included playing gin rummy and bridge. However, above all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her faithful dog, “Wee Wee”.
Survivors include three daughters: Janis Jacobs of Creede, CO, Patricia Campbell of Delta, CO, and Kristi Anne Fix and husband Steven of Las Vegas, NV. She is further survived by four grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Fredrick Goddard and a sister, Mary Smith.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81401.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Charles Kirker Gibson
September 21, 1911 - April 3, 2004
MONTROSE - Charles K. Gibson died on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at his residence in Montrose, Colorado. He was 92.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Montrose Christian Church in Montrose, Colorado, and then in Sun City, Arizona, with inurnment at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, Arizona.
Charles Kirker Gibson was born on September 21, 1911, to Robert Leon and Mary Luella (Kirker) Gibson in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his childhood in Douglas, Arizona. Charles graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri.
He married Helen Margaret Marvel on June 19, 1937, in Winfield, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 25, 1990, in Sun City, Arizona. He then married Molly Nadine Maxwell on February 16, 1991, in Sun City, Arizona. She survives.
Charles worked for Ft. Howard Paper Company as a manufacturer’s representative and sales person. He later worked in the real estate business.
Mr. Gibson belonged to the Montrose Christian Church. He was a member of the Rotary, Masons, and Shriners. His interests included reading, helping others, drama groups, and visiting museums.
Those grateful to have shared in Charles’ life include his wife, Molly Gibson of Montrose, CO; a son, Kirk Gibson and his wife Gwen, and their children, Josh and Kari, of El Sorito, CA; a daughter, Kathy March and her husband Al and their children, Heather, Rebecca and Jennifer, of Fayetteville, GA; a brother, William Robert Gibson of Oro Valley, AZ; stepchildren: Danny LaBarr and his wife Dana, Eddie LaBarr, Lori Bruggeman and her husband Scott; and Martha LaBarr. He is further survived by fifteen grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen; and one brother, Franklin Richard (1908 - 1915).
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402, or drop off at their office location at 645 S. 5th, Montrose.
