Charlotte May (North) Lincoln

A celebration of life memorial services in honor of Charlotte May (North) Lincoln, lifelong area resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 at the Arriola Community Center. The Rev. Johnny Arrington will officiate.

Charlotte was born in Cortez on Jan. 20, 1918, to Niles and Mabel (Thomas) North of the Lewis-Arriola area. She passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 84.

She attended school at Garrett Ridge, and on Feb. 3, 1935, she married Charles A. Lincoln. They made their first home in Rico, where Charles was employed as a miner and at Engle Mercantile for numerous years. Their first two boys, Richard and Jimmy, were born during this time.

During World War II., the family moved to Oregon, and later to California, where she was a volunteer Red Cross block warden and nurse.

After the war, they moved back to Arriola, bought the Arriola Store and renamed it Lincoln Mercantile. Three more children and one adopted daughter joined the family, Charlene, Albert, Nihla and Alice. Charlotte was "mom" to many children, since there is a 23-year difference between her first and last child. She always made sure the neighborhood children received a sack of candy and an orange from "Santa" each Christmas.

Charlotte was a devoted member of her community. She maintained memberships in several organizations including the Order of Eastern Star Dolores Chapter, the 4-H Club, the Four Corners Jeep Club, and Senior Citizen of Dolores. Charlotte was also a Rainbow Mom, and a Girl Scout Leader.

In 1962, they moved to a ranch on Hwy. 145, where Charlotte returned to her agricultural roots by planting a huge garden every year, and tending to her prized livestock and milk cows. She spoke a lot about her experiences growing up on her parents’ farm and riding horses to Garrett Ridge School. Throughout the years, her love for horses never faded.

She and Charles would spend a week each summer in the mountains, taking their children and friends on pack trips. These "kids," all adults now, still remember the fun they had and the experiences that this remarkable woman taught them.

Surviving Charlotte are her children, Richard D. (Karen K.) Lincoln of Dolores, Charlene A. (Terry) Johnson of Kasilof, Alaska, Albert R. (Teresa) Lincoln of Astoria, Ore., Nihla M. (Reed) McCabe of Dolores, and Alice Begay (Woody) Lee of Shiprock, N.M.
