Alice G. Young
March 4, 1925 - July 22, 2004
PAONIA - Longtime Paonia resident, Alice Young passed away at her residence on July 22, 2004. She was 79.
A memorial service for Alice is planned for 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 26th at the Paonia United Methodist Church. Reverend John Nadasi and James Gall will preside. Services will conclude at the church.
Alice G. Anderson was born to the late Harry F. and Winnie A. (Haines) Anderson on March 4, 1925 in Winterset, Iowa. She spent her childhood in Winterset and graduated from high school there in 1943. She continued her education attending the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.
On June 5, 1949, in Winterset, Iowa, Alice married George A. Young. He survives. They resided in Iowa until 47 years ago when they moved to Paonia.
Mrs. Young was a member of the Paonia United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the United Methodist Women. Alice was also a member of the Pitkin Mesa Club. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, playing cards, and spending winters in Arizona.
Those grateful to have shared in Alice’s life are her husband of over 55 years, George A. Young of Paonia, CO; four daughters, Mary Shipley and her husband Ward, Gwen Bulla and her husband Bob and Judy Young, all of Grand Junction, CO; Jill Emmons and her husband Roger of Paonia, CO. Alice is further survived by six grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Willis Anderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416 or to the Paonia United Methodist Church, PO Box 157, Paonia, CO 81428.

John D. Mills
October 15, 1936 - July 20, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Hotchkiss resident, John Mills, passed away July 20, 2004 at his residence. He was 67.
No services are planned at John’s request.
John D. Mills was born on October 15, 1936 to the late Glen and Lorraine (Hartman) Mills in Sutherland, Nebraska. He spent his childhood and attended school in Lakewood and Grand Lake, Colorado.
On September 5, 1954, John married Marlene Parker in Edgewater, Colorado. She survives. John and Marlene were residents of Fort Lupton, Colorado for twenty - five years and residents of Hotchkiss, Colorado since 1993.
John was a truck foreman for Oxbow Mining Company. He enjoyed fishing, camping, horses and his family.
Those grateful to have shared in John’s life are his wife, Marlene Mills of Hotchkiss, CO; son Keith Mills and his wife Laurie of Riverton, WY; two daughters, Dana Peters and her husband John of Arvada, CO and LaDean Easlick of Denver, CO; two brothers, Mason Mills of Crawford, CO and Tim Mills of Grand Junction, CO; two sisters, Kathy Addis and Pat Welch both of Edna, KS.
John is further survived by ten grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Byron Mills.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Beulah R. Fletcher
October 5, 1904 - July 20, 2004
Paonia - Beulah Fletcher of Paonia, CO died July 20, 2004 at Paonia at the age of 99.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24th at the Paonia Christian Fellowship Church in Paonia. The service will conclude at the church.
Beulah Martin Fletcher was born October 5, 1904 in Pryor, Oklahoma, the first born of Bessie and Grover Martin. When only a small child her family moved to a homestead near Moriarity, New Mexico. Six additional children were born in New Mexico. When Beulah was but a teenager her father died, and she was called upon to help her widowed mother with the farm and the care of her younger brothers and sisters.
On December 14, 1922, Beulah married Roy Fletcher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1925 Beulah and Roy arrived in the North Fork Valley, fell in love with it and never left it. They were engaged in fruit farming and fruit processing activities. Beulah loved working in the soil, was an accomplished seamstress, and cook. Her greatest joy was in her family, her church, and in her community. Beulah and Roy were members of the Christian Church for many years, and Beulah was a charter member of the Paonia Christian Fellowship.
Preceding Beulah in death were her husband, Roy Fletcher, in 1975, four brothers, and two sisters.
Mrs. Fletcher is survived by her three daughters, Evelyn Haley of Grand Junction, CO; Vivian Hadley of Salt Lake City, UT; and Earlana Sims of Paonia, CO; a half brother, of Fort Collins, CO; five grandchildren, twelve great - grandchildren and eight great - great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Paonia Christian Fellowship Church, PO Box 160, Paonia, CO 81428 or to the North Fork Ambulance Fund, PO Box 127, Hotchkiss, CO 81419.

Barbara Sarver
September 24, 1940 - July 17, 2004
ECKERT - Barbara Sarver, 63, of Eckert, Colorado, lost her courageous and heroic battle with ovarian cancer on July 17, 2004.
She was born on September 24, 1940, in Peoria, Illinois. She was the oldest daughter of Virgil and Sylvia Yoder of Aurora, Colorado.
Barbara graduated from Littleton High School in 1958, and attended college at Oklahoma Women’s College in Chickasaw, Oklahoma.
She and Tony Sarver were married in Evergreen, Colorado, on February 29, 1964. Together, they worked in real estate in the Denver area for many years. They moved to Durango, Colorado, in 1972.
Barbara was very active in the Republican Party in Colorado, serving as La Plata County Chairman. In 1980 and 1984, she was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in support of Ronald Reagan.
In 1996, Tony and Barbara relocated to Eckert, Colorado, where her business endeavors included providing voter registration and election software and support to many counties in Colorado. She was also a partner with Tony in a variety of real estate and business ventures.
Barbara was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook. She loved the outdoors as long as it didn’t include camping. She was a devoted wife and mother. Family was everything. When her daughters were growing up she spent many hours volunteering at their schools and other activities. She was also an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Delta. Barbara was full of life and determination. Her love, kindness and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband Tony of Eckert, CO; children : Jill Tulk of Elizabeth, CO, Dana Sarver and Cindy Sarver of Aurora, CO; sister Brenda Stewart of Santa Fe, NM; brother, Brad Yoder of Castle Rock, CO; son - in - law, Daniel Tulk; and grandson, Zachary Tulk of Elizabeth, CO.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at the Stolte Shed on SW 2nd Street in Cedaredge, Colorado, on July 24th at 11:00 a.m.. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Harel F. Pierce, Sr.
March 2, 1935 - July 18, 2004
MONTROSE - Montrose resident, Harel F. Pierce, Sr. died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at his residence. He was 69.
Services are pending at this time.
Harel Frank Pierce, Sr. was born on March 2, 1935, in Jamestown, Tennessee, to the late Hermit and Nora (Lowery) Pierce. He spent his childhood in Muncie, Indiana, where he also attended school.
On December 22, 1956, in Muncie, Indiana, Harel married Margaret L. Moore. She survives. They resided in Lakewood, Colorado, for many years prior to moving to Montrose just two years ago.
Mr. Pierce was a barber for 20 years. He retired in 1997. Prior to that, he had been a machinist. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, having earned a Navy Occupation Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. His interests included fishing with his family, playing chess and cards. His wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Margaret Pierce of Montrose, CO; one daughter, Kathy Pierce of Santa Ana, CA; two sons: Harel F. “Jay” Pierce, Jr. and wife Rochelle and Darrell A. Pierce all of Montrose, CO; three sisters: Nellie Fisher and husband George of McCordsville, IN, Betty Jo Richardson of Kissimmee, FL and Pam Braid and husband Jim of Lagrange, IN; four brothers: Frank Pierce, Jr. of Kissimme, FL, Billy J. Pierce and wife Loy of Pensacola, FL, Paul L. Pierce and wife Ann of Farmland, IN and Bobby Pierce and wife Toni of Muncie, IN; He is further survived by six grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara; and two brothers, Hershel and David.
Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

James Scott Allen
April 24, 1912 - July 15, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Delta County resident, James “Jim” S. Allen, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 92.
As per his wishes no services will be held.
James Scott Allen was born on April 24, 1912, to Chicero and Rodeene A. (Britton) Allen in Sidney, Nebraska. He spent his childhood in Sidney and attended school there. He furthered his education at the University of Nebraska, earning a B.S. Degree in agriculture in 1942. Jim and his wife moved from Beltsville, Maryland, to Cedaredge thirty - three years ago where he has resided since.
Jim married Frances Marie Leymaster on December 20, 1941, in Thedford, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on December 1, 1998, in Cedaredge.
Mr. Allen worked as a soil scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture. He had served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Guadal Canal as a 14CB. He had a special hobby of doing silver and jewelry work and would share it with friends. His greatest love was taking his many friends out to eat.
Those grateful to have shared in Jim’s life include his very dear friends he leaves behind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Marie.

Edward C. Mace
August 9, 1929 - July 14, 2004
DELTA - Eckert resident, Edward C. Mace died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at the Willow Tree Care Center in Delta. He was 74.
A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 20th at the Cedaredge Church of the Nazarene in Cedaredge, Colorado. Pastors John and Marylouise Dannels will preside. Interment will follow at the Cory Cemetery in Cory, Colorado.
Edward C. Mace was born on August 9, 1929 in Denver, Colorado to the late Jesse and Mildred “Millie” (Hickox) Mace. He spent his childhood in Denver and attended school there.
On June 28, 1952 in Silt, Colorado Edward married Mary Ann Hickox. She survives. They were residents of Silt until 1991 when they moved to Eckert.
Mr. Mace was a Maintainer Operator for the Garfield County Road Department for many years. His interests included fishing, hunting, working in his yard and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Mary Ann Mace of Eckert; one daughter, Pattie Marie Godfrey and husband Danny of Delta; and one brother, Russell Mace of Penrose, CO. He is further survived by three grandchildren, Trease and Jamie Mace and Solan James Godfrey and one great grandson, David Mace.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Freddy Mace.
Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Brigg Welker
August 28, 1961 - July 12, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Cedaredge resident, Brigg Welker passed away on July 12, 2004 at his home. He was 42.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 19, 2004 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge, Colorado. Services will conclude at the chapel.
Brigg Doug Welker was born on August 28, 1961 to Lionel and Dona (Haynes) Welker in St. Louis, MO. He spent his childhood in St. Louis and graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1978. Brigg had been a resident of Colorado for over ten years.
Brigg was an avid pool player. He loved fishing and the outdoors. Brigg also loved music and played the guitar.
Those grateful to have shared in Brigg’s life are, his mother and step father, Dona and Stephen Hux of St. Louis, MO; brother, T. Chris Welker of St. Louis, MO; and sister, Sara Zirbas and her husband Tom of St. Louis, MO. Brigg is further survived by two nephews, Andy and Aaron.
Brigg was preceded in death by his father, Lionel Welker.

Alice I. Christensen
August 9, 1923 - July 11, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta resident, Alice Christensen, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2004, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 80.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 15th at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 16th at the Seventh - day Adventist Church in Delta with Pastor Lonnie Liebelt and Pastor Steve Snow officiating. Inurnment of ashes will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 17th at Delta City Cemetery.
Alice Irene Oosterhous was born on August 9, 1923, to Henry and Iva (Howard) Oosterhous in Delta, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Delta where she attended the Seventh - day Adventist Church School through her elementary years. She went on to Campion Academy in Loveland, Colorado, graduating in May of 1943.
Alice married Virgil Christensen on October 23, 1943, in Glendale, California. This marriage was later dissolved. He preceded her in death in California in 1997.
Alice’s work career began in Glendale when she became a “Rosie the Riveter” for the war effort. When the war ended she did pressing and alterations for a dry cleaning service. She became an outstanding seamstress and loved to sew her family’s clothes and home décor. In October, 1965, Alice returned to Delta and continued to work in the dry cleaning business. At the same time she continued her education, becoming a licensed practical nurse in 1970. She worked as an LPN in several local health care facilities until her retirement in 1994. A highlight of her nursing career was the year she spent working in Hilo, Hawaii.
Mrs. Christensen was an active member of the Delta Seventh - day Adventist Church. Her first love was her family and many friends. Among her many other interests were gardening, sewing, reading, her pets, and the annual trips she took with her cousin, Mabel Howard.
Those grateful to have shared in Alice’s life include her daughter, Patrice Hieb and husband Keith of McDonald, TN; a son, Jon Christensen and wife Rita of Portland, OR; and a brother, John Oosterhous and wife Lois of Delta, CO. She is further survived by four grandchildren: Karen Bandel, Paul Hieb, Lisa and Marla Christensen; three great - grandchildren: Grayson, Vance, and Gavin Hieb, and a fourth one that is expected in September that she was looking forward to holding.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Orrin Oosterhous of Delta, CO; and a sister, Zella Seabourn of Durango, CO.
Memorial contributions may be made in Alice’s memory to the Alice Christensen Scholarship Fund, c/o Delta Seventh - day Adventist Church, P.O. Box 91, Delta, CO 81416.
