Willem H. Vervloet
May 28, 1914 - October 14, 2004
CRAWFORD - Longtime Crawford resident, Willem H. Vervloet, passed away at his residence on Thursday, October 14, 2004. He was 90 years old.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 18th at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Father Bill Nelson and Father Alex Danowski will officiate. Services will conclude at the church.
Bill Vervloet was born on May 28, 1914, to Anthonius Willem and Johanna (Bregman) Vervloet in Amersfoort, Holland (Netherlands). He spent his childhood in Amersfoort and graduated from high school there. He furthered his education at the Netherlands Marine Engineer Institute in Utrecht, Holland, and graduated from there in the late 1930’s. After graduation he was inducted into mandatory service in the Netherlands and served in the Army Motor Corps.
Bill was employed as a Drilling Superintendent with Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company, a position he held for twenty - four years. His job took him to Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, Indonesia; New Guinea; Trinidad, West Indies; and Columbia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, South America. In 1942, while working in Sumatra, he escaped the island during the Japanese invasion and was taken to Port Darwin, Australia by U.S. forces. From there he went to the United States where he continued to work in the oil industry. In 1944 he returned to international service with Shell Oil working in South America and Indonesia.
On March 21, 1951, Bill married Edna Elaine Mattison in Schenectady, New York. Shortly after there marriage they moved overseas where Bill continued his work with Shell. After retiring, and following his lifelong dream of owning and operating a ranch, Bill and Elaine moved to Crawford, Colorado in 1962 and this past March celebrated fifty - three years of marriage together. She survives.
Bill was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Hotchkiss and belonged to the Hotchkiss Elk’s Lodge #1807. The greatest joy of his life was his family, particularly spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved to read, watch football, and do woodworking projects.
Those grateful to have shared in Bill's life include his wife, Elaine Vervloet of Crawford, CO; two sons: Casper Vervloet of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Anthonius “Tony” Vervloet and his wife Collenette of Bangkok, Thailand; two daughters: Andrea Niemeyer and her husband Meindert of Elon, N.C., and Johanna “Jody” Roeber and her husband Mark of Paonia, CO. He is further survived by seven grandchildren: Patricia, Jessica, Chase, and Anthony Roeber and Victoria, Alexandra, and Olivia Niemeyer.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, An Vervloet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Children’s Christmas Fund in care of any bank in the North Fork area or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, Colorado 81416. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Ramon I. Lopez
Sept. 27, 1921 - Oct. 10, 2004
PAONIA - Longtime Paonia resident, Ramon I. Lopez, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. He was 82.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, October 13th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 13th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 14th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Bill Nelson will preside. Interment will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Paonia with members of the Wilson - Head American Legion Post No. 97 and members of the U.M.W.A. No. 6417 conducting graveside rites.
Ramon I. Lopez was born on September 27, 1921 in Capuline, Colorado to the late Presiliano and Felicita (Sena) Lopez. He spent his childhood and attended school in Capuline. He entered the U.S. Army in July of 1942 and served during World War II until January of 1946.
On February 8, 1947 in Montrose, Colorado, Ramon married Edith Madril. They celebrated 57 years of marriage this year. She survives.
Mr. Lopez was a longtime coal miner. He began his career in East Carbon, Utah working for many years until he and Edith moved to Montrose, Colorado. In 1969, they moved to Paonia where he continued to work as a miner until his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia, the U.M.W.A. No. 6417 and the Wilson Head American Legion Post No. 97 in Paonia. He had a love of the outdoors where he enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He also enjoyed mechanics and electronics.
Survivors include is wife, Edith Lopez of Paonia; four sons: Tony Lopez and his wife Carol of Salt Lake City, UT, Jonathan Lopez of Las Animas, CO, Duane Lopez and his significant other Patrick Shilue, both of Paonia, and Allen Lopez and his wife Janet of Grand Junction; two brothers: Presiliano Lopez and his wife Dorothy of East Carbon, UT and Joe Sena and his wife Lillian of Las Vegas, NV; four sisters: Esther Valdez of East Carbon, UT, Connie Ruybal of Canon City, CO, Theresa Taylor and her husband Douglas of Clifton, CO and Cleo Lovato of Santa Fe, NM. Mr. Lopez in further survived by 10 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Dale Lopez, one brother, Ramon Lopez, Jr., one sister, Veronica Lopez and two aunts, Alma Lopez - Quintana and Germana Martinez - Trujillo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Joseph M. Goetzfried, Jr.
October 11, 1926 - October 10, 2004
Austin - Austin resident, Joseph Goetzfried, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 10, 2004. He was 77 years old.
No local services are planned. A memorial service will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO at a later date.
Joseph M. Goetzfried Jr. was born on October 11, 1926, to Joseph M. Goetzfried, Sr. and Leda (Legault) in Denver, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Englewood, Colorado and graduated from Englewood High School in 1944.
Joseph married Grace DeMers on October 6, 1949 in Denver, Colorado, who survives him.
Joseph served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Joseph and Grace were residents of the Denver area until he retired from Martin Marietta and moved to Austin, Colorado twelve years ago.
Mr. Goetzfried was a devoted husband and loving father who enjoyed gardening, boating, camping, fishing, and woodworking. Joseph was mechanically inclined and able to fix anything. One of Joseph’s passions was being a Denver Bronco fan.
Those grateful to have shared in Joseph’s life include his wife, Grace Goetzfried of Austin, CO; two sons, Mike Goetzfried and his wife Josie of Evergreen, CO and John Goetzfried and his wife Tamee of Englewood, CO; six daughters, Shelly Gallaway of Englewood, CO, Diane Obermeyer of Delta, CO, Mary Jean Bartling and her husband Chuck of Colbran, CO, Susan Jorissen and husband Tom of Rogers, MN, Patty Hill and husband Sam of Wetmore, CO, and Donna Goetzfried of Delta, CO. Joseph is further survived by twelve grandchildren, Scott, Tony, Charla, Grace, Celena, Rodney, Raven, Tyler, Heather, Joe, Jolene, and Blake; and six great grand children, Marlee, Andrew, Angela, Kylee, Sam and Molly Jean.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, an infant son Mike, and granddaughter Angie Goetzfried.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, PO Box 24, Delta, Colorado 81416.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Jack A. Morrell
July 19, 1924 - October 9, 2004
PAONIA - Lifetime Delta County resident, Jack Morrell, passed away at his home in Paonia, Colorado on Saturday, October 9, 2004. He was 80 years old.
A graveside funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 14th at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia, Colorado. James Gall will preside.
Jack A. Morrell was born on July 19, 1924 to John R. and Laura (Graham) in Colbran, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Paonia and graduated from Paonia High School in 1942.
Mr. Morrell was a longtime rancher. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, livestock and riding horses. He was a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E. # 1807 in Hotchkiss, CO and a former board member of Pitken Mesa Water Board.
Those grateful to have shared in Jack’s life are two sons, David Morrell and his wife Susan of Wasco, OR and John Morrell and his wife Charlotte of Paonia, CO; a daughter Jackie Stiner and her husband Marvin of Aloha, OR; and his former wife, Josephine Penko of Glenn’s Ferry, ID. Jack is further survived by seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and another on the way.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Morrell; a nephew Mike Morrell; a great grandson Alan Morrell and his longtime companion, Angelina Mautz.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 127, Hotchkiss, CO 81419.

Byron Richard Helsel
August 8, 1919 - October 9, 2004
DELTA - Byron Helsel, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado. He was 85.
No services are planned at this time.
Byron Richard Helsel was born to the late David and Thecla (Shuker) Helsel on August 8, 1919 in Dutch Hill, PA. He spent his childhood in Dutch Hill, PA and graduated from high school in Parker, PA. Byron received his teaching doctorate at ASU in Tempe, AZ.
On August 4, 1942, Byron married Gladys Ross in Texas. She survives. Byron and Gladys were residents of the San Jose, CA area where he retired from teaching at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, CA in 1986. They moved to Delta, CO in 2000.
Byron enjoyed fishing, golfing, hiking, touring, traveling, the country and was an avid hunter.
Those grateful to have shared in Byron’s life are his wife, Gladys Helsel of Delta, CO; on Rick Helsel and wife Kathy of Longmont, CO; daughter Kathleen Bowen of Springville, UT; brother John Thomas Helsel of Killmarnock, VA. He is further survived by four grandchildren.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents.

Edward L. Gustin
April 1, 1926 - October 7, 2004
DELTA - Longtime Delta County resident, Edward L. Gustin, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. He was 78.
Private family graveside services will be held at the Cedaredge Cemetery. Reverend Del Hampton will preside.
Edward Leland Gustin was born on April 1, 1926, to Monroe and Kittie (Dowty) Gustin in Flagler, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Flagler and the Denver area, attending school in both places. Edward continued his education in Long Beach, California, earning his teaching certificate. He and his wife moved to Cedaredge in 1988, and then to Delta in April of 1998, where he has resided since.
On June 19, 1943, Edward married Maxine Lenore Proffitt in Goodland, Kansas. She preceded him in death in Grand Junction, Colorado, on September 5, 1999. They had celebrated fifty - six years of marriage together before her death.
Edward was employed as an instructor at Long Beach City College in California. He served in the US Navy during WWII and belonged to the American Legion Post #104 in Cedaredge, CO. He enjoyed working and fishing. He was a true baseball fan and loved the Dodgers.
Those grateful to have shared in Edward’s life include four sons: Eddie Gustin and his wife Sue of LaPine, OR, Forrest Gustin and his wife Robin of Alton, MO, Richard Gustin and his wife Avis of Eckert, CO, and Jack Gustin of Cedaredge, CO; three brothers: Oscar Gustin of Limon, CO, Ike Gustin of Denver, CO, and Richard Gustin of Denver, CO; two sisters: Lucille Guthrie of Hawaii, and Ellen Sherritt of Berryville, AR. He is further survived by eleven grandchildren and sixteen great - grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine; two sisters: Marge and Beulah, and his grandson Brian Halberg.
Memorial contributions may be made in Edward’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 761 Rood Ave., Grand Junction, CO 81501.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

James “Jim” W. Myers
August 27, 1914 - October 6, 2004
AUSTIN - Longtime Orchard City resident, Jim W. Myers passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado. He was 90 years old.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, October 11th at the Cory Cemetery in Cory, Colorado, with Pastor Max Kendrick officiating.
James Wilbur Myers was born on
August 27, 1914, to William and Golda Pearl (Pierce) Myers in Monte Vista, Colorado. He spent his childhood in the San Luis Valley, San Diego, California, and then Austin, Colorado. Jim graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1932. He had been a resident of the Orchard City area for over sixty - four years.
Mr. Myers served his country in the United States Army as a Corporal during World War II.
On October 20, 1945, Jim married Audrey Rigler in Dorset, England. They had celebrated over fifty - eight years of marriage together. She survives.
Jim was a farmer. He loved to keep up on the water rights and the laws governing water in the area. He enjoyed raising cows and taking care of all the newborn calves in the spring. Jim belonged to the Fogg Ditch Company and served as a board member and was a past president of the company.
Those grateful to have shared in Jim’s life include his wife, Audrey Myers of Austin, CO; a son, David Myers and his wife Pam of Santa Rosa, CA; two daughters: Heather Myers of Loveland, CO and Laura Myers of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Ed Henderson and his wife Betty of Montrose, CO; and a sister, Alice Ford of Grand Junction, CO.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and his step - father, Ray Henderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Colorado Boy’s Ranch, P.O. Box 681, LaJunta, CO 81050.

Betty E. Powell
July 23, 1927 - October 6, 2004
DELTA - Delta resident, Betty Powell passed away at Delta County Memorial Hospital on October 6, 2004. She was 77.
No services are planned.
Betty E. Risley was born on July 23, 1927 to the late Raymond and Ruby (Lister) Risley in Chicago, Illinois. She spent her childhood and attended school in Chicago.
Betty was a resident of Glendale, Arizona for ten years before moving to Delta in September of 2001. She was a secretary for the railroad for thirty years.
Mrs. Powell was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Delta. She enjoyed reading, playing bingo and bowling.
Those grateful to have shared in her life are two daughters, Susan Bradley and her husband Mike of Delta, CO and Dawn Powell of Arrowhead Lake, AZ; brother - in - law Rudy Feyertag of Sun Lakes, AZ and sister Dorothy Jansen of Chicago, IL. Betty is further survived by six grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ethel Feyertag and infant son Mark Powell.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
