Carolyn Cookie' Been

Former Naturita Mayor

Nov. 9, 1931 - Sept. 7, 1999

NATURITA - Carolyn Cookie' Been, age 67, died on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born on Nov. 9, 1931, in Ada, Okla., the daughter of Harrison and Verda Meaders.

Miss Meaders attended Texas State College for Women and the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of the Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority, then attended East Central College in Ada. There she met William Been and they were married on March 29, 1952.

The Beens moved to Naturita from Farmington, New Mexico in 1959, and started their own business, Bill's Body Shop, which later became A to Z Industries.

In the mid 1980s, she founded a floral shop and started the area's first video retail business, both of which she later sold. In 1996 she started an antiques store, Granny's Treasures, which gave her and her sister Marion great pleasure. She continued to oversee A to Z Industries and Granny's Treasures until her illness.

Cookie served as a Naturita town board member from 1991 to 1992, when she was elected to the position of Mayor. She served as Mayor until 1998, securing grant funding of over $500,000 for the renovation of the town park and community center, rebuilding of the town's water and sewer treatment facilities, and many other local improvements. Cookie received several accolades for her many services to the community that she loved and continually tried to improve. She was named Woman of the Year in 1998 by the Nucla-Naturita Chamber of Commerce.

Cookie also was actively involved with the Rimrocker Historical Society and was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. I

She loved to travel, was an accomplished photographer, and an avid gardener.

Survivors include her five children: Michael who owns Z to Z Mine Supply in St. George, Utah; Vicki who is a Professor of Law at New York University School of Law in New York City; Sheryl who writes children's books and works in a floral business in Denver; David who owns A to Z Machine in Naturita; and Terry who works as a project controller for Union Carbide in Seadrift, Texas.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chris and Kelsy Been, Rachel Been, Joshua and Sarah Revesz, and Timothy and Trevor Been.

Additional family survivors include her sister, Marion Belew; two daughters-in-law, Sue Been and Michelle Been, and son-in-law Richard Revesz.

Cookie was preceded in death by her father in 1957, her husband in 1990, and recently by her mother.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church in Naturita. The family has requested that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Rimrocker Historical Society, P.O. Box 913, Nucla, Colo. 81424.

Chester West Ball

World War II Veteran

May 1, 1914 - Sept. 10, 1999

MONTROSE - A Montrose resident since 1988, Chester West Ball, age 85, a World War II veteran and a retired tool and dye maker manufacturer, died on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Grand Junction.

Born on May 1, 1914, in Powell, Wyo., Chester West Ball was the son of Walter and Gertrude (West) Ball. He was raised by aunts and uncles in Minnesota.

During World War II, Chester served his country in the United States Navy.

He married Ruth Mae Gillis on Dec. 22, 1974, in Denver. Chester and Ruth would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year in December.

They lived in Denver for 15 years before moving to Montrose in 1988 where Chester made his home until the time of his death.

Chester was a Past Master of the Masons and a member of the Shriners. He greatly enjoyed helping others as a member of both organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ball, of Montrose; two stepsons: Mike and Nick Huskey; one grandson, Scott Bradley, in the United States Air Force in Kansas; one granddaughter, Karen Bright, of Denver; and four great-grandchildren.

Chester was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara (Brush) Ball; one daughter, Barbara Bradley; and one son, William Ball.

At Chester's request, cremation has taken place and no service is planned.

Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Harvey Fred Beall

Long Haul Truck Driver

April 18, 1927 - Sept. 19, 1999

DELTA - Harvey Fred Beall, age 72, of Delta, died on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in Integrated Health Services in Delta.

Harvey Fred Beall was born in Denver, Colo. on April 18, 1927, the son of Fred and Ona (Messick) Beall.

Harvey served his country in the United States Coast Guard and then worked as a long haul truck driver.

Harvey's marriage ended in divorce.

He was a resident volunteer at Community Care for five years.

Harvey was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Denver.

Survivors include one son, Vincent Wade Beall.

Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Fred Beall; his mother, Ona (Messick) Beall; and one brother, Max Vincent Hoorebeke.

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery, 682 1725 Rd., Delta, Colo. 81461; telephone 970/874-8633.

Mildred Q. Crandell

Homemaker/Excellent Seamstress

Oct. 6, 1905 - Sept. 10, 1999

MONTROSE - Mildred Corine Quigley Crandell, age 93, a longtime Montrose resident, died on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Colorado Springs. She was a resident of Pikes Peak Manor at the time of her death.

Mildred Corine Quigley was born in Montrose County, Colo., on Oct. 6, 1905, the daughter of Henry and Lucille Quigley. She spent her childhood in DeBeque, graduating from the DeBeque High School.

Mildred married Benjamin R. Crandell on June 9, 1923. They lived in Glenwood Springs and Canon City for several years before settling in Montrose in 1935.

Mildred was a homemaker, excellent seamstress, pianist, organist, and gardener. For many years, she was involved in church and community activities.

Survivors include four grandchildren: Denise Crandell Woody, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Mark Crandell, of Leesburg, Va.; Matthew Crandell, of Woodbridge, Va.; Elise Crandell Dwyer, of Potomac Falls, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren: Justin, Benjamin and Lauren Woody, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Kyle, Bryan, and Danielle Crandell, of Woodbridge, Va.; and Connor Dwyer, of Potomac Falls, Va.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin R. Crandell, in 1974; an infant son, Douglas, in 1928; and two other sons: Gordon, in 1996; and Harry, in 1998.

Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Mildred's life will be officiated by The Rev. Mike Lundberg, of Valley Baptist Church, on Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Pike's Peak Manor, In Memory of Mildred Crandell in Colorado Springs or Montrose Little Theater, In Memory of Mildred Crandell.

Christopher James Foster

MONTROSE - Christopher James Foster, age 3, of Montrose, died Monday morning, Sept. 20, 1999, in Montrose.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Christopher's life will be officiated on Friday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Sue Garner

A Very Special Lady

Nov. 2, 1934 - Sept. 16, 1999

HOTCHKISS - Sue Garner, age 64, a homemaker and a resident of Hotchkiss, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 16, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Sue Cole was born in Boulder, Colo. on Nov. 2, 1934, the daughter of Cass Cole and Susie (Barnes) Cole.

Sue married Roy Garner on Sept. 16, 1954, in Montrose. Their union was blessed with two sons. Sue died on her and Roy's 45th wedding anniversary.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and latchwork. Sue was a very special lady who loved her family and relished taking care of her home and yard. She had a way of making those around her feel important. Sue's family and all who knew her feel blessed to have known her and will miss her greatly.

Survivors include her husband Roy Garner, of Hotchkiss; two sons: Allen Garner, of Hotchkiss; Miles Garner, of Glendale, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Other family survivors include her parents, Cass and Susie Cole, of Delta; two brothers: Ken Cole and Ivan "Butch" Cole, both of Cedaredge; and one sister, Carol Lanzl, of Grand Junction;

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Sue's life will be officiated by Paul Nystrom on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Darline M. Matthews

An Inspiration to Everyone

Jan. 12, 1926 - Sept. 18, 1999

FRUITA - Former Olathe resident, Darline M. Matthews, age 73, of Fruita, died on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Family Health West at Fruita.

Darline M. Hartness was born in Omaha, Neb. on Jan. 12, 1926, the daughter of Elbert L. Hartness and Ruth (Doty) Hartness. She spent her early childhood in Omaha before moving with her family to Fontana, Calif. around the age of 7.

Shortly after moving to Fontana at the age of 7, Darline met Phillip W. Matthews. Over the years they fell in love and were married at her parents' home in Fontana on June 10, 1943, the same day Darline graduated from the Chaffey High School in Fontana. Their union was blessed with four daughters and this year in June they were privileged to celebrate 56 loving years of marriage.

Following their marriage, Phillip and Darline established their home in Fontana until 1965 when they moved to Las Vegas, Nev. where they operated a metal and paper recycling business.

After making their home in Las Vegas until 1984, Phillip and Darline moved to Olathe, Colo. to be closer to their family. While living in Olathe, Darline baked pastries for local auctions in town and made a number of family wedding and anniversary cakes.

She loved cooking meals for her family and friends, and dedicated her life to helping people whether it was her family or friends. With her positive and optimistic attitude, she was an inspiration to everyone. Above all, Darline loved and delighted in taking care of her family. She will be so deeply missed by her family and friends.

Survivors grateful to have shared Darline's life include her husband, Phillip W. Matthews, of Fruita; four daughters: Cyndy Rowan, of Bandon, Ore.; Mylissa Franks, of Olathe; Phyllis Matthews-Wolfington, of Vancouver, Wash.; and Lin Matthews, of Coos Bay, Ore.

Darline was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of 19 great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Ivan Hartness, of Sequim, Wash.

Darline was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Robert Hartness, Russell Hartness, and Don Hartness.

Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and to pay respects to Darline's life will be officiated by Pastor Tim Wade on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Merlyn Eugene Webb

OLATHE - World War II veteran and former longtime Montrose resident, Merlyn Eugene Webb, age 72, died Friday morning, Sept. 17, 1999, at his home in Olathe.

Merlyn Eugene Webb, the son of Ellis Henry Webb and Ida M. (Lyon) Webb, was born on Dec. 25, 1926, in Montrose, Colo. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Montrose, where he made his home for 65 years.

During World War II, Merlyn served his country in the United States Navy.

He married Donna L. Cox on Jan. 4, 1948, in Aztec, N.M. Their union was blessed with one son and one daughter.

Merlyn was employed as a mechanic with Dewey Miller and Meyer Implement, and then worked as assistant road foreman for Montrose County District 2.

After making his home in Montrose for 65 years, Merlyn and Donna moved to Olathe where Donna preceded him in death on June 15, 1993, at their home in Olathe.

Following his wife's death, Merlyn continued to make his home in Olathe until the time of his own death.

He loved hunting and fishing and especially enjoyed mechanical work.

Survivors include one son, Stanley E. Webb, of Olathe; one daughter, Joyce and husband Ray Pahl, of Montrose; one granddaughter, Jody and husband Joe Baugh, of Montrose; and four stepgrandchildren: Brenda Moxley and Stacey Clay, of both of Virginia; Nicole Pahl, of North Carolina; and Christopher Pahl, of Montrose.

Other family survivors include two brothers: Donald C. Webb, of Olathe; Lawrence Webb, of Montrose; and one sister, Norma Crawford, of Meeker.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Donna, Merlyn was also preceded in death by one brother, Clifford Webb; and five sisters: Thelma (Alderman) Finley, Neva Woods, Ruby Hoffman, Naomi Brooks, and Baby Doris.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Merlyn's life will be officiated by Hospice Chaplain Ken Backman on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose, with Military Graveside Rites being conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
