Eugenia “Gene” M. Skidmore
February 8, 1931 - September 19, 2004
CRAWFORD - Longtime Crawford resident, Gene Skidmore, passed away at the Delta County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, September 19, 2004. She was 73 years old.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2005.
Eugenia Marie Skidmore was born on February 8, 1931, to Robert L. and Edith L. (Schumacher) Gorrell in Denver, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Lakewood, Colorado. She attended the Lutheran School in Denver, Bancroft School, and graduated in 1948 from Alameda High School in Lakewood. Gene lived in Los Angeles County, California for ten years and then in Lakewood, Colorado for eight years before moving to Crawford in 1968.
Ms. Skidmore was a safety technician in the coal mining industry and worked for Westmoreland Coal, as well as, Cypress Minerals. She attended the Lutheran Church. Gene was very active in several organizations including the Hotchkiss Emblem Club, Delta Doves, the American Cancer Society, and the Delta County Breast Cancer support group. When she lived in Lakewood, she belonged to the Lakewood Riding Club. She enjoyed horses, being a rock hound, and antelope hunting.
Those grateful to have shared in Gene’s life include her daughter, Marie Stucker and her husband Ron of Crawford. She is further survived by five grandchildren: Clinton Dale Skidmore and his wife Cheri of Delta, CO, Donald Ludwig and his wife Jen and Kelly Beauchamp and her husband Gary all of Hotchkiss, CO, Ryan Stucker and his wife Val of Guadalupe, CA, and Jeannie Wade of Paonia, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Rodney Dale Skidmore, who died in 1952.
Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to the Delta Doves, P.O. Box 216, Cory, CO 81414.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Patrick M. McVey
July 9, 1940 - September 17, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Surface Creek resident, Patrick M. McVey, passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at his residence from bronchial pneumonia. He was 64 years old.
An informal supper will be held in Pat’s memory at the James and Vicki Cloud residence at 22595 Uintah Rd. in Cedaredge, on Sunday, September 26th at 3:00 p.m.
Patrick Michael McVey was born on July 9, 1940, to Charles and Bette McVey in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent his early childhood in Covina, California, and in the early 1970’s moved to Crested Butte, Colorado, where he spent the major portion of his life. He tended bar at Sancho’s, the Grub Steak, the Wooden Nickel and the Way Station. In 1986, he left Crested Butte and went to Bisbee, Arizona, to be with his mother, who was quite ill. He remained there until his mother’s death in 1994. While living there he tended bar at St. Elmo’s.
“Pappy”, as his friends knew him, then returned to Crested Butte and lived with the Al Leonetti family and others for some time, tending bar at Kochevar’s. In 1996, he moved to the Cedaredge area for health reasons.
Pappy used to astonish bar customers with his not - so - cheerful, unique personality that all who knew him well will remember. He enjoyed his later years near the Jim and Vicki Cloud family, celebrating a simple life and sitting in the sunshine daily.
He loved jazz music, and sports (especially baseball), animals, nature, children, old movies and sunsets. He is remembered for his articulate recollection of baseball and sports history, American History knowledge, and his ability to recall any important dates.
Those grateful to have shared in Pat’s life include his many friends he made throughout his life.

James C. Robuck
July 4, 1937 - September 18, 2004
NUCLA - Longtime Nucla resident James C. Robuck, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was 67 years old.
The funeral service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Thursday, September 23rd at the New Hope Pentecostal Church in Naturita, Colorado. Danny Williams will preside. Interment will follow at Nucla Cemetery.
James Calvin Robuck was born on July 4, 1937 in Fort Morgan, Colorado to the late Earl G. and Ella Louise (Callen) Robuck. He spent his childhood in Grand Junction, Colorado and graduated from Nucla High School in 1955, where he was a proud member of the first Nucla Wrestling Team. Following graduation Jim entered the U.S. Army where he served in the 82nd and 101st Airborne in Munich, Germany until June of 1958.
In the late 50’s Jim’s family bought the Nucla Mercantile. He and his brother continued to operate the business, until Jim retired just a few years ago. He owned and operated Ideal Food Market in Montrose, along with his brother and father in the early to mid 1970’s.
On May 18, 1996 in Norwood, Colorado, Jim married Laura McKee. Mr. Robuck was a true supporter of the West End Area. He always played a big part of any community event. He was a member of the New Hope Pentecostal Church, the Nucla Moose Lodge, the High Mesa Flyers, a former School Board Member, a past member of the Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Montrose Elks Lodge. His hobbies included fishing, boating, camping, cooking, traveling and meat cutting.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Jim’s life include his wife, Laura Robuck of Nucla; two sons: Rick Robuck of Telluride and Mike Robuck and his wife Debbie of Montrose; one brother, Larry Robuck and wife Diane of Nucla and one sister, Sherry Ray and her husband Jerry of Blanding, UT.
Jim is also survived by three grandchildren, Amber Robuck of Tacoma, WA, Cyndi Robuck of Grand Junction, Ben Robuck of Montrose and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Raymond Eugene Howard
April 8, 1941 - Sept. 17, 2004
OLATHE - Longtime Olathe resident, Raymond E. Howard, died Friday, September 17, 2004 at his home. He was 63.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 21st at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Bruce Martin and Rob Roy will preside. Interment will follow at the Pea Green Cemetery.
Raymond Eugene Howard was born on April 8, 1941 in Avery, Oklahoma to the late Floyd Bird and Linda Mae (Porter) Howard. He spent his childhood in Parkland, Oklahoma and attended school there and in Agra, Oklahoma.
On February 5, 1960, in Olathe, Colorado, Ray married Carrol Byers. She survives.
Ray could certainly be called a “Jack of All Trades”, as he was very mechanically inclined, able to repair anything from a lawn mower to heavy equipment. He was a member of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn in Delta, Colorado. His interests included hunting, fishing and exploring with his metal detector.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Ray’s life include his wife of over 44 years, Carrol Howard of Olathe; three daughters: Rama Martin and husband Bruce and MaLinda Roy and husband Rob, all of Montrose, CO, and Leila Blake and husband Perry of Cory, CO; two sons: Steve Howard and wife Lori of Montrose and Brad Howard of Olathe; four sisters: Ruby Evans and husband Jack of Casa Grande, AZ, Lawanda Lockhart and husband Palmer of Welling, OK, Bessie Byers of Montrose and Violet Byers and husband Chuck of Delta; two brothers: Melvin Howard and wife Kit of Hooker, OK and Ellis Howard and wife Gloria of Commerce City, CO.
Mr. Howard is further survived by ten granddaughters, six grandsons, two step grandsons and their wives and eight step great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers: Benny, Bud and Dicky Howard.

Mari - Lu Bowland
February 23, 1928 - September 15, 2004
DELTA - Mari - Lu Bowland, a resident of Delta, Colorado, passed away on September 15, 2004, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 76.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 24, 2004, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado, with James Gall officiating. Services will conclude at the chapel.
Mari - Lu Williamson was born on February 23, 1928, to Leonard and Esther (Clark) Williamson in Royerton, Indiana. She spent her childhood in Yorktown, Indiana and graduated from there with the class of 1946. She moved to San Bernadino, California, in 1959 and then moved to Delta in 1990, where she had made her home since that time.
Mari - Lu was a medical records clerk. Her greatest passion was raising Arabian horses and showing them. She had earned several awards by entering them in the Tournament of Roses Parade in California. When she came to Delta she joined the Pink Ladies at the Delta County Memorial Hospital. She had volunteered 3967 ˝ hours from 1991 to 2000.
Mari - Lu married William Casada in 1958. This marriage was later dissolved. On May 4, 2002, she married Chick Bowland in Mesquite, Nevada. He survives.
Those grateful to have shared in Mari - Lu’s life include her husband, Chick Bowland of Delta, CO; and a sister, Molly Maxwell of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and her dear friends, Birdy Herman and Ronald Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers her wishes were to send contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Bertha Largent
Dec. 28, 1903 - Sept. 11, 2004
PUEBLO - Former Longtime Paonia resident, Bertha Largent died Saturday, September 11, 2004, in Pueblo, Colorado. She was 100 years old.
A funeral service is planned for 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 17th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia. James Gall will preside. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.
Bertha Cridlebaugh was born on December 28, 1903, in Cloud County, Kansas, to the late Abraham Lincoln and Matie Jane Cridlebaugh. She spent her childhood and attended school in Kansas.
On March 17, 1927, in Hugoton, Kansas, Bertha married Noah C. Largent. They moved to Paonia in 1937. Noah preceded her in death on July 8, 1956, in Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Survivors include two daughters: Zelma Nielsen and husband Larry of Pueblo, CO and Willa Huff and husband Ron of Ceres, CA; three sons: Gaylord Largent and wife Karen of Germany, Kenneth Largent of Crane, TX and James Largent and wife Judy of Paonia. Mrs. Largent is further survived by 10 grandchildren and 18 great - grandchildren.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Lee Largent; three brothers, five sisters, two granddaughters, one grandson and one great grandson.
Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

William C. Panek
December 23, 1911 - September 9, 2004
CRAWFORD - Longtime Crawford resident, William C. Panek, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 9, 2004, at his residence. He was 92.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia, Colorado, with Father Bill Nelson officiating. Services will conclude at the Church.
William C. Panek was born on December 23, 1911, to Albert and Ann (Sbonek) Panek in Traverse City, Michigan. He spent his childhood in Traverse City and graduated from high school there. He continued his education at Gregg College, Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1947.
William married Jeanne Davis in 1946 at Traverse City, Michigan. She preceded him in death in 1984, in Crawford, Colorado.
Mr. Panek served his country in the United States Army where he became a Master Sergeant. He saw combat during World War II in the Philippines, the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and was among a small number who survived the battle at New Guinea, where many of his comrades did not come back
William, a court reporter, was employed for twenty years for Gila County in Globe, Arizona, serving under Judges Robert McGee and Barry DeRose. While in Arizona, he was very active in the Holy Angel’s Catholic Church where he was instrumental in starting the first Catholic school and welcoming the Irish Presentation Sisters to the New West. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Legion. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. The greatest love of his life was his family.
William, a loving and caring father, is survived by three sons: David Panek of Crawford, CO, Bill Panek and his wife Ann of Davis, CA, and John Panek of Rocklin, CA. He is further survived by four grandchildren: Jessica, David, Julie and Scott.
William was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne; and one sister, Louise Panek.
Your prayers and thoughts will surely be heard and greatly appreciated. May God bless all who touched is life and all of that lives that he touched in his long and wonderful time with us.

Grace Arlene Latimer
October 30, 1919 - September 10, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta resident, Arlene Latimer, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta. She was 84.
A visitation will be held for family and friends on Monday, September 13th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 14th at the Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, Colorado, with James Gall officiating.
Grace Arlene Patton was born on October 30, 1919, to George and Grace (Gunn) Patton in Camp Pass, Montana. She spent her childhood in Delta, Colorado, and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1937. She lived in Los Angeles, California, from 1939 until 1946 when she moved to Anchorage, Alaska, for two years. She returned to Delta where she has made her home for the past seventy - five years.
Arlene married Eldon F. Latimer on June 19, 1939, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1981, in Delta.
Mrs. Latimer, a bookkeeper, was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Delta. Arlene enjoyed reading and was a history buff. She worked for many years at the Delta County museum. The greatest love of her life was her grandchildren.
Those grateful to have shared in Arlene’s life include two sons: Glen Latimer of Delta, CO, and Roy E. Latimer and his wife Jaynie of Longmont, CO. She is further survived by two grandchildren: Tracie Roth and her husband Bill of Ft. Collins, CO, and Kelley Aldrich and her husband Joshua of Mead, CO; and three great - grandchildren.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eldon; a sister, Mary Belle Morlang and a brother, Joe Patton.
Memorial contributions may be made in Arlene’s memory to the Delta County Historical Society, 251 Meeker St., Delta, CO 81416.

Shirley L. Nelson
December 27, 1953 - September 10, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta resident, Shirley L. Nelson, 50, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2004, at the Colorow Care Center in Olathe, Colorado.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, September 12th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 13th at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with Pastor Doug Hill officiating. Services will conclude at the Chapel. A private family interment will take place at the Delta City Cemetery.
Shirley L. Nelson was born on December 27, 1953, to Ray and Eleanor (Johnston) Nelson in Delta, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Delta and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1973.
Ms. Nelson worked at High Quality Packing for many years. She attended the United Methodist Church in Delta and was a member of the Katherine Rebekah Lodge #65 where she served as a Noble Grand. Shirley enjoyed crafts and working in the kitchen at the Delta IOOF Lodge #116 on bingo night. She also enjoyed working bingo at Colorow Care Center. Her greatest love was helping people.
Those grateful to have shared in Shirley’s life include her mother, Eleanor Nelson of Delta, CO; a sister, Charlene Fedler and her husband Russ; and a brother, Kenneth Nelson and his wife Linda all of Delta. Nieces LaDonna Gay and husband John of Delta, Lanette Timbreza and husband Bill of Grand Junction, Kendra Green and her husband Tate of Fountain, CO; nephew, Roy Nelson of Delta, CO. Also surviving is a great niece Shaylin Timbreza of Grand Junction; and A great nephew Eric Fedler of Delta, CO.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Ray Nelson; and two brothers.
