Mary Louise Cairns

Beloved Mother, Grandmother

Oct. 10, 1917 - Oct. 1, 2000

OLATHE - Mary Louise Cairns, age 82, a homemaker and resident of Olathe for a year and a half, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Carla's Retreat at Olathe, nine days before she would have celebrated her 83rd birthday.

Mary Louise Spore, the daughter of Lawrence "Elmo" Spore and Margery Christine (Watson) Spore, was born on Oct. 10, 1917, in Paonia, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from the Paonia High School, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Mary was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to John Fredrick Cairns on Sept. 21, 1936, in West Los Angeles, Calif. John preceded Mary in death on April 7, 1977, in Vista, Calif.

She lived in Vista and Escondido, Calif., before moving to Olathe a year and a half ago where she resided until the time of her death.

Mary was a member of the Flower Club of Vista, Calif., and Quail Gardens of Carlsbad, Calif.

Among her many special interests and hobbies that brought her happiness and contentment were gardening, basket weaving, cooking, reading, and music.

Survivors very grateful to share Mary's life include one son, John Cairns and wife Barbara, of Cedaredge; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Other family survivors include three brothers: Lawrence Elmo Spore and wife Idonna, of Cedaredge; William Andrew Spore and wife Pauline, of Gardena, Calif.; and Gavin Spore, of Hotchkiss.

Along with both of her parents and her husband, Mary was also preceded in death by one sister, Margery Maude "Monnie" Houseweart.

Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Mary's life will be officiated by The Rev. Stephen Wengrovius on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Delta. The service will conclude at the church.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Tim Brice Gabriel

Auto Body Finisher

Feb. 17, 1966 - Oct. 2, 2000

CEDAREDGE - Tim Brice Gabriel, age 34, a resident of Cedaredge since 1991, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.

Tim Brice Gabriel was born in Reno, Nev., on Feb. 17, 1966, the son of Eugene E. Gabriel and Mitzie Madge (Hocker) Gabriel. He spent his childhood in Ely, Nev., where he attended high school at the White Pine Schools, and grew to adulthood.

Tim was employed as an auto body finisher and lived in Gabbs, Nev., three years prior to moving to Cedaredge in 1991 where he resided until the time of his death.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of Delta.

Among the many special interests and hobbies in Tim's life that brought him happiness and contentment were fishing, motorsports, and the outdoors. He especially loved spoiling his nieces and nephews.

Those who knew and loved Tim during his short lifetime knew just how fortunate they were to have him touch their lives. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors very grateful to share Tim's life include his mother, Mitzie Gabriel; three brothers: Mark Gabriel and wife Linda; Gene Gabriel, all of Cedaredge; Steve Gabriel and wife Pam, of Mountain Home, Idaho; four sisters: Neila and husband Danny Swapp, of St. George, Utah; Cindy and husband Jeff Paff, of Ely, Nev.; Karen and husband Royce Engan, of Palisade; Sally and husband T.J. Holderness, of Gypsum; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Tim was preceded in death by his father, Eugene E. Gabriel; and one nephew, Cliff Warren.

Graveside Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Tim's live will be officiated on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. in the Cedaredge Cemetery at Cedaredge.

Lyle W. Giese

Oil Industry District Manager

Nov. 5, 1917 - Oct. 3, 2000

MONTROSE - Lyle W. Giese, age 82, of Montrose, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.

Lyle W. Giese, the son of John Giese and Martha (Altmann) Giese, was born on Nov. 5, 1917, at the family homestead in rural Adams County, Colo. He spent his childhood in Mitchell, Neb., where he graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., majoring in Mathematics.

Lyle married Agnes Shasteen on June 23, 1943, in Royal Oak, Mich. Agnes preceded Lyle in death in 1966.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a District Manager in the oil industry. In 1979, he moved from Royal Oak, Mich., to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.

Special interests in Lyle's life that he loved and enjoyed were fishing and geology.

Survivors include two sisters: Naomi Kalotta, of Montrose; Marilyn Stoddard, of Chandler, Ariz.; five nieces and three nephews, which includes a niece, Carleen and husband Glenn Ogg, of Montrose.

Besides both of his parents and his wife, Lyle was also preceded in death by two brothers: Alfred and Norman.

At Lyle's request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Inurnment of the cremains will be held in the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Mich.

Fred C. Gray

WW II Vet/Loved Outdoors

April 1, 1913 - Sept. 28, 2000

MONTROSE - Fred C. Gray, age 87, a longtime Montrose businessman and a resident of Montrose since 1939, died early Thursday morning, Sept. 28, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

Fred C. Gray, the son of Whitson J. Gray and Margaret (Black) Gray, was born on April 1, 1913, in Apollo, Pa., where he spent his childhood, and graduated from Apollo High School with the class of 1931. He continued to further his education at The Elgin Watchmakers College.

Fred was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Jeanetta E. "Janet" Freshour on Dec. 15, 1940, in Eckert, Colo. They were the parents of four children and would have shared 60 years of marriage this year in December.

During World War II, Fred proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army/Air Force.

Fred and Janet owned and operated Gray's Jewelry in Montrose for 35 years.

He was a member of Montrose United Methodist Church.

Fred found happiness and contentment in his love of the outdoors and fishing.

Survivors very grateful to share Fred's life include his wife, Janet Gray, of the family home in Montrose; one son, Charles Gray and wife Melva, of Colorado Springs; three daughters: Linda A. Gray, of San Marcos, Calif.; Dorothy and husband William Skipper, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Judy and husband William Benson, of Colorado Springs.

He was the proud and loving grandfather of six precious grandchildren: Heather, B.J., Janna, Aimee, Matthew, Sarah, and grandpuppy, Chyna.

Fred was preceded in death by both of his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Fred's life will be officiated by The Rev. Steve Warren on Monday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose United Methodist Church. The service will conclude at the church.

At Fred's request, cremation has taken place.

Cleo V. Harrison

Believed Deeply in Education

Aug. 15, 1918 - Sept. 26, 2000

MONTROSE - Cleo V. Harrison, age 82, of Montrose, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 26, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.

Cleo V. Veo was born at Cimarron, Colo. on Aug. 15, 1918, the daughter of Dutch Veo and Harriett (Truesdale) Veo. She spent her childhood years at Cimarron and graduated from the Montrose County High School with the class of 1936.

Cleo was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Fred W. Harrison on Oct. 22, 1937, in Montrose, Colo. After their marriage, Fred and Cleo lived in Telluride during World War II. Later they moved back to Montrose and became part of the Riverside community.

Cleo was employed as a cook at the Riverside and Uncompahgre Elementary Schools, country schools near Montrose, for a number of years. She was later employed as manager of the Montrose Memorial Hospital kitchen.

She was a member of the Quilters Club of Montrose for many years. Cleo won many blue ribbons for her beautiful quilts at the Montrose County Fair year after year.

One of Cleo's great loves in life was gardening and growing flowers. She loved to visit with her family and friends, go fishing with Fred and their children, and picnic in the mountains. Cleo loved children and believed deeply in education. She spent her retirement years working in classrooms throughout the school district as well as helping with clerical work in the Montrose County School District Central Office.

Cleo was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years on Jan. 24, 1994, in Montrose.

Survivors grateful to share Cleo's life include two sons: Harold Harrison and wife Barbara, of Las Cruces, N.M.; Larry Harrison and wife Linda, of Greeley; and one daughter, Bonnie and husband Russell Stone, of Montrose.

Cleo was the proud and loving grandmother of five precious grandchildren: Lisa McKee, Tammy Kokes, Lonnie Harrison, Tracy Gross, Lance Harrison; and four great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Leo "Buck" Veo; and one sister, Harriett Harrison, both of Montrose.

Along with both of her parents and her husband, Fred, Cleo was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Cleo's life will be officiated by Joe Brummitt on Friday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Cottonwood Elementary School Library, In Memory of Cleo Harrison, P.O. Box 10000, Montrose, CO 81402.

Lloyd Martin Hedke

World War II Veteran

March 15, 1915 - Sept. 26, 2000

MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose resident, Lloyd Martin Hedke, age 85, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.

Lloyd Martin Hedke was born in Sterling, Colo., on March 15, 1915, the son of Martin Hedke and Emma (Knobbe) Hedke. He spent his childhood years, received his education, and grew to adulthood in the Denver area.

During World War II, Lloyd served his country in the United States Air Force with the 529th Fighter Squadron in China.

He was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Lucille Shafer on Jan. 4, 1948, in Boulder, Colo. Lloyd and Lucille were privileged to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary this year in January.

Lloyd lived in Honolulu, Hawaii and Colorado Springs prior to moving to Montrose in 1979 where he and Lucille made their home until the time of his death.

He was employed with Civil Service at Wheeler Air Force Base, Hawaii; Peterson Field, Colorado Springs; and Castle Air Force Base, in California and owned and operated a service station in Empire, Colo.

Among the loves in Lloyd's life that brought him happiness were especially fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Shafer, of Montrose; one son, Robert L. Hedke and wife Colleen; and two precious grandchildren: Robyn and Collin Hedke, all of Garland, Texas.

No services are planned.

Howard Ratio Logan

World War II Veteran

Oct. 31, 1919 - Sept. 28, 2000

DELTA - Howard Ratio Logan, age 80, a resident of Delta since his youth, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his home in Delta.

Born on Oct. 31, 1919, in Hays, Kan., Howard Ratio Logan was the son of Walter and Savana (Dean) Logan. He moved to Delta as a youth, where he graduated from the Delta High School, grew to adulthood, and made his home until the time of his death.

Howard proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Sergeant. While in the Army, he was an instructor in airplane mechanics.

He was a member of the Delta Christian Church and Grand Mesa VFW Post No. 9221 of Cedaredge.

In life, Howard greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and building. He constructed the Passive Solar home he and his wife lived in.

Survivors grateful to share Howard's life include his wife of 19 years, Maxine; two sons: Bobby, of Australia; Sam, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and five daughters: Wanda, of Denver; Shirley, of Buena Vista; Patty, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Julia, of Arlington, Texas; and JoAnn, of McCook, Neb.

Howard was the proud and loving grandfather of eight precious grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Other family survivors include three sisters: Pauline, of Medesto, Calif.; and Lenora and Dorothy, both of Oceanside, Calif.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; both of his parents; and two brothers: Tom and Fred.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary at Delta.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Howard's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna on Monday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.

Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with Graveside Military Honors being presented by Grand Mesa VFW Post No. 9221.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta; (970) 874-8633.

Robert W. Owen

Longtime Montrose Resident

Jan. 23, 1933 - Sept. 30, 2000

MONTROSE - Robert W. Owen, age 67, of Montrose, died late Saturday night, Sept. 30, 2000, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.

Robert W. Owen, the son of Frank Earl Owen and Natalie (Walker) Owen, was born on Jan. 23, 1933, in Elizabeth, N.J. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Batavia, N.Y. He continued his education at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., receiving his AA degree in Psychology.

Robert proudly served his country as a Clinical Psychology Specialist in the United States Army for six years, from 1962 to 1968. He was honorably discharged as an E-6.

In July of 1965, he married Shirley LaFortune in Orleans, France. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Robert lived in San Jose and Sacramento, Calif., before relocating to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.

Prior to his retirement, Robert was employed as a security officer and a social worker.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

At Robert's request, cremation has taken place. A private inurnment will be held in Cedar Cemetery at Montrose.
